welcome back to our ruminations. From here, in the red room. This episode we’re joined by returning guests Mike “call me Arvig” Arvig, and Charlie “Triple C” Langley. We’re back to ruminate on some sad sad songs, as given us by Mr. Tom Reynolds and his book “i hate myself and want to die”. Its all in fun, and while mr Reynolds book is very tongue in cheek, it is still my belief that there’s some heart there in recognizing these sad songs….sometimes the hurt has to find a way out and nothing salves the wounds of life like a good laugh. This episode we’ll be covering the chapter “If I Sing About Drugs, People Will Take Me Seriously” “Captain Jack” Billy Joel 1974 “Let her Cry” Hootie and the Blowfish 1994 “Sam Stone” John Prine 1972 www.RuminationsRadioNetwork.com Twitter: Ruminations@FromTheRedRoom http://guillermotheivth.blogspot.com/ Facebook Ruminations from the Red Room Instagram www.instagram.com/FromTheRedRoom Music and Production by Mitch Proctor

Being Excellent to Each Other - a Resonance on Bill and Ted In this pt 2 episode, which follows hot on the heels of our Rumination on Generations, we wax nostalgic on Bill and Ted, their Excellent Adventure, and Bogus Journey. A generational touch stone itself, the first Bill and Ted was a fantasy ride full of optimism and hope. The idea that music could save the world, could create a harmonious existence and unite people was an inspiration, one we could use a little more of now. Today it seems people need a little boost, a bit of levity, and while we’re at it, perhaps whip a little love and compassion at ‘em at the same time. The joy, and positivity that the original movie exhibits, smoothly invites all watchers to enjoy the moment, live for our dreams, and simply “be excellent to each other”. So we chat about what the movie meant to us, what moments we remember most fondly and what we hope for the third installment, “Bill and Ted Face the Music”, which as of this writing, becomes available today in theaters and via on-demand services. This writer for one can’t wait. We’ll be watching with friends around the country and, while we can’t be in the same room, and we’re not heading out to the theatre, we very much intend to “party on dudes”. Rumination on Generations ...on the eve of a generational story, and a return of the "Great Ones" known as Bill & Ted... ...Critical thinking, attention span, impact of a digital world and social media…we hit these in a conversational, anecdotal way. We just chat up some thoughts on why some of the, in our view, small inconveniences with which people are struggling, are seen as such. We put forth that while each persons experience is individual and creates their scope and perspective, some generations are better suited for adversity. We talk about the drive to get approval from the tribe, and the different ways we seek to find that. All that leads us into the next episode, as we chat up the Resonance that we feel with Bill & Ted and their excellent adventures. Ruminating on a Sad Song ep 3 We rejoin Mr Tom Reynolds in Chapter 3 of his work, I hate myself and want to die, “I'm Trying to Be Profound and Touching, but Really Suck at It”. If we needed anymore proof that this book is tongue in cheek this has to be it. While Reynolds seemingly paints all of these odes to loss and misery as comical, I can’t help but still feel that he wouldn’t have zeroed in without some amount of sympathy….I think we’ve looked at these past songs with empathy and sympathy, and dug in a little to the heart of things, but still enjoyed a laugh or two as well. Besides laughter is the best medicine, next to whiskey. This chapter had a HUGE playlist so we’ve chosen to just pick our favorites and address those. Ruminations - on a Sad Song ep. 1 What is it about a sad song? Some of us only like them when we ourselves are feeling blue, others might seek them out regardless of their current mood. What makes a song really sad, and what factors contribute to getting that feeling across to the audience? We start our mini-series using Tom Reynolds 2005 book “I Hate Myself and Want to Die” as inspiration, guide-post, and subject of review. We start with Mr. Reynolds first chapter: I was a Teenage Car Crash. Please note that none of this is meant to take the serious nature of a sad song lightly. When first picking up the book, I expected a deeper dive into what made a sad song, what motivated the author of each track, maybe biographical info that gave us insight into the artist that was moved to pen their heartbreak, and set it to music. Like many times in life, we find the laughs to make it through the pain… The episode starts with a harrowing tale of Mike and an alley fire… Finding the solace in a sad song is a beautiful human experience, through the music, lyrics, or the brilliant combination of both. Hope you find comfort in some of this, be it from the artists works, or in the simple knowledge that someone has felt what you are feeling, and none of us are in this alone. In this episode of From the Red Room, we let the resonance of a life of loving music, bring a musician back to his instrument. Finding new meaning, and connecting to a band and their work, through meaning, and intent, Sean takes us on a journey of rediscovery…I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again here; there is magic, and soul in music that is beyond words. We make lifelong friends of our musician heroes and they see us through much, often narrating our lives. Every musician has a story and a motivation. The muse finds us at different times, and states of mind and heart. It is always refreshing, and rewarding when we express our art. Go out and create. We also touch on separating art from the artist and what makes an artist stand the test of time. We sometimes feel the need to express, even when we don’t yet know what we want to say. For some, it’s volcanic, it’s an avalanche of content, and a dire need to pour it out and keep moving. There are some, for which it is like a ground swell, a tremor, that builds and becomes a tsunami. For some still, it is a quiet stream that in time will cut through the most grand mountains, and rock, and leaves an enduring mark. Finding that passion is something we’ve tried to do.
