Leave Health Bite a Feedback.Click This Link.Your reactivity isn't a character flaw—it's hardwired into your biology. But that doesn't mean you have to be hijacked by it.In the last 24 hours, you've probably reached for something—a handful of chips, a glass of wine, your phone. You've flipped through Instagram to Amazon to emails back to Instagram again. You've tried to distract yourself with eating, shopping, scrolling, overworking. In this transformative episode, Dr. Adrienne Youdim reveals how the same biology that drives public outbursts is also behind our private struggles—and more importantly, how to flip the script on reactivity. What You'll Learn:Why reactivity is biology, not weakness. The hidden hungers driving your behavior. The pause that changes everything " When you create space between trigger and reaction, reactivity transforms into resilience. "— Dr. Adrienne YoudimThe Biology Behind ReactivityOur nervous system was created to scan for threats and get us out of harm's way quickly. But what was once protective has become maladaptive, showing up in how we relate to ourselves and others.Where Reactivity Shows Up:Reaching for food, alcohol, or your phone automatically. Lashing out at partners. Overspending, overworking, people-pleasing. The same biology behind public outbursts drives our private struggles. The Four Types of Hunger:Physical: Your body needs nourishment—food, rest, sleep, movement. Cook real meals, get seven hours of sleep, take a 10-minute walk.Emotional: Stop seeking validation externally. Recognize you are enough, just as you are. Offer yourself the validation you seek.Spiritual: You're trying to control everything. Step back, surrender, recognize you can't do it all. Lean into service or something beyond your tangible life.Relational: Where are you not present? Are you distracted with your children? Hiding behind texts instead of showing up vulnerably? The Power of the Pause:When you create space between trigger and reaction, reactivity transforms into resilience. Your hunger is a message—something needs your care. That space is where you live authentically and aligned with your deepest values.Explore Additional Resources From Dr. Adrienne:Buy the Book: Hungry for More (Amazon & Audible)30-Day Journaling ProgramPast episodes of HealthBite3 Ways that Dr. Adrienne Youdim Can Support You Subscribe to Dr. Adrienne's weekly newsletter https://www.dradrienneyoudim.com/newsletter Connect on Instagram : Follow @dradrienneyoudim for tips and inspiration on well-being and peak performance. Email me here: sam@healingcouples.org Episode show notes: Even after months of progress, one small trigger can make everything feel like it's falling apart — a look, a memory, a tone — and suddenly all the safety you've been building in your porn addiction recovery feels shaky again. In this episode, I talk about what's really happening in those moments when a porn trigger hits and your whole system goes into panic mode. I'll help you understand why triggers don't mean you've failed, and why they're actually a normal part of the porn recovery process. I'll share the “Falling Tiles” analogy I use with clients to explain what's going on beneath the surface, and how emotional safety, consistency, and small moments of follow-through are what create real freedom from pornography, not just temporary self-control. We'll cover: Why triggers are a normal part of porn addiction recovery — not a setback What happens in your brain and body when old fears resurface How to rebuild emotional safety after a pornography trigger Why trust sometimes collapses even when things are going well How to help your partner feel safe again without convincing or defending Whether you're working to overcome porn addiction, heal from pornography use, or rebuild trust in your relationship, this episode will help you make sense of the ups and downs and show you how to find steady ground again — not through willpower, but through understanding, consistency, and connection.

In this week's episode, B~Love and Syd dive into what real support looks like in relationships—and how it feels when the people closest to us don't show up the way we expect. From reposts on social media to showing love out loud, they break down why support matters and how to ask for it without sounding ungrateful. They also tackle a wild “What Would I Do?” story involving flowers, assumptions, and a heated back-and-forth that spiraled way too far. To keep things light, the two wrap up with some “Would You Ever” questions guaranteed to get couples thinking (and maybe side-eyeing each other).

Few politicians produced the musical reaction that Ronald Reagan did. His California-branded conservatism inspired countless young people to pick up guitars and thrash out their political angst. Punk bands across the United States took aim at the man, his presidency, and the idea of America he was selling to voters nationwide. Small yet vibrant scenes across the country emerged to challenge the communal norms and social values projected on them by the popular media and consumer culture. Punk enthusiast Robert Fitzgerald argues that these songs' lyrics aren't just catchy and fun to scream along with; they also reveal the thoughts and feelings of artists reacting to their political environment in real, forthright, and uncensored time.In Hardcore Punk in the Age of Reagan (UNC Press, 2025), Fitzgerald shows how these lyrics illustrated what young adults felt and how they reacted to one of the most influential and divisive leaders of the era. Punk lyrics are seemingly simple, the author argues, but they sketch out a complex, musically inspired countermovement that is as canonical in the American songbook as the folk and rock protest music that came before. Robert Fitzgerald is a laboratory school administrator and a lifelong punk fan. Robert Fitzgerald on UNC Press's website. Seventy countries have responded to President Trump's insistence on reciprocity in bilateral trade relations by seeking to negotiate with the United States. Communist China is not among them. While the Chinese Communist Party left the door to negotiations open a crack, its overwhelming response is belligerent retaliation. Obviously, it hopes to avoid humiliating submission – and, if possible, to induce U.S. trade partners to join instead China's exploitative mercantilist arrangements. There's another explanation: The CCP is at war with America. It makes no secret of seeking our destruction using pre-kinetic “unrestricted warfare,” notably including predatory trade. President Trump is right to apply high tariffs to accelerate our needed economic disengagement from such a foe and its weaponized supply chains. He must also enforce his “America First Investment Policy” and prevent Wall Street from further underwriting our mortal enemy, the Chinese Communist Party. This is Frank Gaffney.

This is Whiskey calling out to our dog attack victim. Um, I hope you're okay. I'm sorry that happened. I'm glad that you're already on the journey to heal. And I do wish you a lot of luck. I want to say, I think it's amazing that that was your reaction. To want to turn around and pet the head the bit you. I 've always loved dogs, but at the end of the day, they are just animals that live in our homes. And you're right, what good is a world without them? But...sure, we domesticated dogs over millennia, but they still have sharp teeth. They still have an instinct that I'm not sure it can be entirely bred out. And I'm sorry that you were a victim of that. I would love a dog to curl up with. To take care of. And to understand myself a little bit more, because sometimes I feel a little bit like that. Like there's something in me that can't be bred out, can't be trained out. That when cornered, I'm just a thing with sharp teeth. [click, static] Harry would be the first to tell you that I bite. She's not talking to me at the moment, and for good reason. Um...that snarling, rabid snap of teeth that has always perched just beneath my soft palate came out the other day, and...well, she was in range. [click, static] It was after...well, I was having another one of those dark days. Thinking about Don, just swallowed in grief and guilt. And she wasn't- she wasn't being a pill about it or anything, but she wasn't exactly being comforting and...not that I expect that from her. She's never been great at that. But I think I just needed her to mostly leave me alone if she wasn't going to be comforting. And she wouldn't. And I snapped. I just...I told her it was her fault. It was her fault that I left and found him in the first place. It was her fault that I wasn't there when it happened. And it was her fault that we're in this situation to begin with. Even though I know- I know that it's technically literally the fault of my actions. But still she set us on the path. And that's- [click, static] I'm worried that we're never going to stop having this argument. And that's...you know, in the very foundation of our relationship is having the same argument over and over again, but we've gotten better at it. You know, we've gotten better at fighting with each other. We can hurt more precisely now. Cut deeper with fewer slashes and it's...I wasn't nice about it and she's right to not be talking to me because she lost him, too and we both took actions to protect one another that led us to where we are now, so there's no point in placing blame for Don's death at anyone else's feet other than Junior's. It's his fault. He's the one who did it. But we can't confront him. We can't jail him. We certainly can't kill him. And so we're left with only each other to sling arrows at. [click, static] And I'm tired of it. I'm tired of. Lashing out when I feel cornered. I'm tired of caring about the blame. I'm tired of wanting to try and fix what can't be fixed. But I don't know how to stop any of it. I don't know how to train myself out of those animalistic impulses to tear out someone's throat. And part of me wonders if I did it, if I succeeded and was able to change that part of me so fundamentally, would there be enough of me in what was left? Is a dog still a dog if you remove all of its teeth?

A quick note to the SA Podcaster's Guild, thank you for the History podcast of the year silver award — I shared the honour with the 30 Years of Democracy Podcast, part of the TimesLive stable. It's heart warming to receive some sort of recognition, and thanks mainly to you the listener. With that it's back to episode 195 and we're swinging back to the east, to Zululand, where Chief Mpande kaSenzangakhona of the AmaZulu has not been idle for the last two years. When we last heard about Mpande, after a few years of relative quiet once he took over from Dinging as king of the AmaZulu, he began to plot against the Swazi in late 1840s. As he planned and plotted, in the British outpost called Natal, this territory that abounded Durban, two men had arrived who were to alter South African history. Theophilus Shepstone and Hans Schreuder. More about them in a moment. Mpande thought of Eswatini, Swaziland, as a source of treasure, booty, and a future place of refuge for his people just in case the Boers or the British should advance further into Zululand. The good relations between the Boers and the Swazi, at least running up to the mid-19th Century, meant that Mpande was forced to hold off most of his plans to invade King Mswati's land. It was also along a corridor coveted by not only the AmaZulu and the Swazi, but also by the boers. So his first aim was north west, towards smaller kingdoms where the booty was thinner on the ground, not exactly a plethora of cows, rather a smattering but better than nix. The amaHlubi bore the brunt of Mpande's expansionist aims when he attacked Langalibalele kaMthimkulu who had told his people that from now on, it was he and not Mpande who would control the function of rainmaking. Mpande disagreed. The disputes going on Swazi territory gave the AmaZulu king an opportunity to interfere. If you remember a previous podcast, I'd explained that after Mswati was declared the new young king of the amaSwazi, the senior regent Malambule tried to cling onto power — and was backed in his clinging by Mpande. Enter stage left, a missionary who was on a mission. Enter stage right, a second missionary on another mission. Cast member number one, stage left, Theophilus Shepstone, or Somtseu as the Zulu called him. The other, stage right, was lesser known Norwegian Missionary Society's Hans Schreuder. The latter was well over six feet tall, a powerful man, with a powerful temper. He may have been a bible-wielding man of God, but that didn't stop the Viking blood pumping him up when he was crossed. Schreuder would establish 7 mission stations across Zululand and was going to be extremely useful as Mpande's diplomat. Shepstone's role in our story is a complex combination of missionary, Zulu-phile, Anglophone civiliser in chief — a vast figure in our tale. He would suffer many a baleful settler glare, the colonists believed his pro-Zulu politics were dangerous to their almost infinite demand for labour and land. As the Cape colonials moved towards self-government, Natal became a problem child.

Heatrick Heavy Hitters – Muay Thai Strength and Conditioning
If you're anything like me, there was a time you felt silly shadow boxing. Maybe you still do. Muay Thai is about inflicting damage and having an effect... Lashing out in mid-air feels, well, lame! But, I eventually realised how I could best use shadow boxing to do much more than just get my heart rate up and make me feel self conscious! Are you (still) wasting your shadow boxing? If you're not making the most of your Muay Thai shadow boxing, you're leaving a critical part of your training untapped. Shadow boxing isn't just about warming up or working through your techniques—it's your chance to mentally rehearse fight strategy and tactics, to build the necessary reps required for instinctive action in the ring. It's not only an opportunity to accumulate more random skill practice “clusters” that I've spoken of before to enhance your skill retainment over the long term. But, it's an often wasted opportunity to try on different fight mode “attitudes” and fight “ranges” for size, and become more comfortable with attitudes and ranges less natural for you... A chance to enhance the range of chess pieces you have to play with on your chess board. In this video, we'll break down how to maximize your Muay Thai shadow boxing by using fight ranges and attitudes/modes to gain the upper hand. Whether you're up against a heavy-hitting boxer or a slippery counter-fighter, this method will help you control the fight, think ahead, and execute with precision. Let's strip back the complexity and focus on what really matters. Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2024/10/04/skill-based-muay-thai-shadow-boxing/

Trump seems to be feeling the poll numbers closing in on him. It's still a tight race, but Vice President Kamala Harris is inching up in polling results and seem to have Trump feeling mighty uncomfortable. He also seems a little nervous at the prospect of debating Harris on any network except Republican friendly Fox. Add to that, some of Trump's former cabinet secretaries are calling him dangerous for America and it seems Trump didn't have the best weekend.
