There is both pain and joy involved in letting knowing the people of SOTH RSM travel the next phase of their journey without me. To a lesser degree, I understand how Moses must have felt that it was a bit cruel when God did not allow him to enter the Promised Land with the people he led for so long.  And I understand the desire to be able to walk the next leg of your journey with you. Jesus describes himself as the gate for the sheep, and only those who know his voice will follow him. He also uses metaphors to describe himself as the bread of life and the light of the world. The sermon focuses on how gates can both keep people out and let people in. Jesus is the gate through which we enter, not the gate that keeps us out. Unfortunately, the church has often used the image of Christ as a gate to exclude people based on appearance, socioeconomic status, race, sexual identity, politics, or theology. The message argues that this is not the way of Christ and shares stories of people who found more grace in unexpected places than in their local churches. Jesus invites everyone to follow him, and the church should welcome all people who want to come inside the gate. The gate is not meant to control who gets in or out but to allow everyone to find pasture and salvation. Jesus said, "I am the gate for the sheep." That's odd. Thinking of Jesus as a shepherd makes sense. But what does it mean that he is the sheep's gate? It means that he lays down his life for the one he loves.

We tend to think of the resurrection in very dramatic terms. But the resurrected Christ was revealed to his disciples in something as everyday as “the breaking of the bread." Jesus' resurrection does not do away with everyday life. It transforms it.

(I am part of that residue – so are you). The real story of the resurrection is told in the lives of the people who lived it and in the lives of the people in whom resurrection hope lives.

Paul wrote that, “the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” We must remember there is a level of divine absurdity to our faith. Zaccheus was part of the famous group that we hear so much about in the gospels, “tax collectors and sinners.” Zaccheus chose to live outside of God's covenant. But, when he encounters Jesus face to face, he sees everything, including himself, differently.

The prophet Joel speaks of both trouble and hope for the people of Israel. When a plague of locusts descends and nothing is left, Joel implores them to rend more than there clothes, but to rend or open their hearts to the ways of God.
