Traditionally, being married typically meant living in the same house and city. However, a new study explores the rise of long-distance "commuter marriages" in China, driven by career aspirations or financial objectives. Couples in these arrangements often choose to live apart; while some may see each other once a week, others might only reunite during major holidays. What factors contribute to this trend, and is it sustainable? On the show: Niu Honglin, Ding Heng & Steve Hatherly.

In this episode, the Vallottons share some insights after their recent experience when Jason handled solo parenting for six days while Lauren was away. Families can set themselves up for success during these times by paying attention to the following categories and planning ahead!Prep for Leaving:Ask the Right Questions: Before you leave, ask your partner if there's anything specific they would love you to do or set up. It's important to know their actual needs versus what you think might help. Babysitters and Meals: Arrange for babysitters and meal planning in advance to reduce the stress on your partner.Household Tasks: Take care of essential household tasks before leaving to ensure a smooth operation while you're away.Lists: Create a list of important information, but don't be surprised if it's not needed.Packing: Don't wait until the last minute to pack. Being prepared ahead of time reduces stress for everyone.Setting the Kids Up for Success:Thoughtful Gestures: Find ways to help the kids feel connected while you're gone.FaceTime Flexibility: Don't force FaceTime calls if the kids are not in the right mood. It's better to have quality conversations when everyone is in a good place.Routine Maintenance: Keep the kids' routine as consistent as possible, even when one parent is away. This helps provide stability.Activity Planning: Make a plan for fun activities the kids will enjoy.Couples Connect:Virtual Dates: It's possible to have an intimate date via FaceTime. Set aside time to connect as a couple even when apart.Processing Time: Allow each other time to process the separation and share feelings, even while apart.Small Touchpoints: Send small, thoughtful messages or texts to stay connected throughout the day.Think About Re-Entry Ahead of Time:Itinerary Planning: Consider your return itinerary based on your needs and those of the family.Expectation Management: Acknowledge that being away is not always a vacation. Coming home might not mean feeling refreshed. Plan accordingly to accommodate both partners' needs.Physical Intimacy: It's important to discuss and manage expectations about sex when returning from a trip.Re-entry Stress: Talk as a couple about potential re-entry stress and how to mitigate it. My guest today has blazed a trail through the British poetry scene ever since her work was first published in 1991. Born in Edinburgh, Jackie Kay MBE was brought up in Glasgow by her adoptive parents, Helen and John Kay, of whom much more later. She has had countless poetry collections, short stories and novels published to acclaim, as well as her glorious memoir Red Dust Road which tells the story of meeting her birth parents. The winner of over 20 awards, Jackie is a professor of creative writing at Salford University and for five years she was the Scottish Makar (that's basically poet laureate). Her new collection May Day is an elegy to her beloved parents who (died within a year of each other) and taught her the meaning and power of protest. Something Jackie took to heart marching for women's rights, gay liberation and Black Lives Matter.I went to Glasgow to meet Jackie while she was on tour. Her beloved older brother Maxie had just died and she spoke candidly about love, loss and absence, living with nothing between you and the sky and how poetry helps her survive. We also discussed coming back into yourself in your 50s and 60s, why there should be lists after white male writer's names, the art of living together apart and why her emotional age is 150!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including MayDay by Jackie Kay and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. In this episode, Adam and Budi conclude their 2023 Book Club series with a deep dive into 'The Art of Gathering' by Priya Parker. We look at the transformative impact this text had on Adam's professional journey. Serendipitously, we were able to record this episode on the day of Budi's PhD Seminar which allowed us to reflect on the power of intentional gatherings and the subsequent impact of shared experiences.Priya Parker's bold approach to gatherings redefines the ways people connect, learn, and develop relationships. The acclaimed author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why it Matters, executive producer and host of the New York Times podcast, Together Apart, and the founder of boutique advisory firm Thrive Labs, she helps activists, elected officials, corporate executives, educators, and philanthropists create transformative, unforgettable gatherings that allow them to step back from their daily routine, rediscover their motivations, and develop strategies for innovation. In The Art of Gathering, Parker combines fascinating case studies culled from an international cast of characters with practices to follow—and rules to break— to connect more meaningfully with friends, colleagues, and strangers. She includes examples from her attempts to create connections, illustrating which tactics worked and which ones failed. Included among her success stories are “#IamHere Days,” self-organized adventures in which a group of people unplugs and explores a neighborhood, and “15 Toasts,” dinner parties where each guest has to toast to a common theme (the twist: the last one has to sing their toast). Parker's interactive talks are both a demonstration of the techniques described in her books and a guide on how to implement her strategies.Parker has helped numerous clients develop better in-person and virtual gatherings, including the Museum of Modern Art, LVMH, the World Economic Forum, meetup.com, and Civitas Public Affairs. Trained in conflict resolution, she has worked on peace processes in the Arab world, Southern Africa, and India, and is a founding member of the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network, where she worked on race relations on American college campuses. She has been appointed as a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Values and the New Models of Leadership Council, and is also a senior expert at Mobius Executive Leadership.Parker's The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters has been named a Best Business Book of the year by Amazon, Esquire Magazine, NPR, the Financial Times, 1-800-CEO-READS and Bloomberg. She has spoken on the TED Main Stage, and her TEDx talk on purpose has been viewed over one million times. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes.com, Oprah.com, Real Simple Magazine, Glamour, The Today Show, and Support the showPlease help us send BRIGHT LIGHT BURNING to COP28 in Dubai. TOGETHER / APART is a solo exhibition of collaborative photography by Natalie Christensen and Jim Eyre who join Juliet on this podcast episode from their studios in England and New Mexico. The composite images which feature in the exhibition are of surreal cityscapes embodying the disquieting experience of how our lives were transformed by the ravages of COVID-19. Expanding on their earlier collaborative work ALTEREDSTATES/ALTEREDSCAPES, Christensen and Eyre are again combining photographs from their respective communities and responding to the experience of leaving behind our former lives and participating in a global effort to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Architectural fragments and elements of the landscape are mingled to present diverse psychological experiences of this new world experience of shock, loneliness, yearning and fear. This podcast explores their unique creative collaboration and how their practice evolved during the global pandemic. TOGETHER / APARTwill be exhibited at the Nordic Art Agency until August 31st 2023 and the complete digital exhibition catalogue can be now online. You can find Natalie Christensen and Jim Eyre on instagram where you can see more examples of their work.

For many workers, a flexible work schedule has become a non-negotiable aspect of their job. Flexibility is considered a key pillar of hybrid work. But it's also the most misunderstood. When policies around scheduling or work expectations haven't been thought through, flexibility at the workplace can become burdensome. In the Citrix Work Rebalanced report, flexibility is the lowest-rated pillar, from both an employee and employer perspective. Many employers expect complete office attendance. However, from an employee perspective, a flexible work schedule is the most valued aspect of an office work culture today. So how should business leaders – and personnel – manage this disconnect? In this episode, we hear from an employee who felt frustrated when the flexible work schedule in her former office wreaked havoc with her own work commitments. Then organizational behavior and human resource management professor Sonia Kang will discuss why managers need to ensure clear policies around flexible arrangements that account for the lives of a diverse workforce. And finally, hear from Marco Osso, VP of Employee Success at Tulip, on why the software provider for retail management has gone all in on flexibility.Hybrid work is here to stay. A hybrid work report offers global opinion research based on fieldwork by Citrix that can help business leaders, IT leaders, and employees build the new world of work.Work Rebalanced: The Citrix Hybrid Work Report utilizes four key pillars — technology, flexibility, trust, and collaboration — to understand the forces challenging and reshaping their organizations.
When we said our marriage vows, I thought the phrase "to have and to hold" was literal, that I would actually be able to hold him. But in our military marriages, we know that there's a lot of times that what connects us needs to be stronger than being able to reach out and grab their hand. Let's talk about it. Six years in, Sana and Adnan Akhand loved being married to each other. But sharing everything — their apartment in New York City, their money, the household duties, all their free time — shook the balance of power in their marriage, and they ended up feeling stuck. They were looking for a big reset, and found that they had to interrogate their fundamental ideas about what makes a good marriage to see their future together.

My girlfriend Paula and I recorded this podcast a week prior to embarking on another stint of long-distance. Our 5th time to be exact. If we had recorded this the day she was leaving I dare say the tone of the conversation would have been far more emotional than this. We joke that we are getting good at goodbyes but it never gets any easier. For those who don't know Paula and I are based separately in Bali and Barcelona respectfully. When we first got together we knew we would have to have periods of time apart. But then covid hit and navigating travel through a spanner in the works and an extra air of uncertainty. We open up for an inside look into the realities that have come with doing long-distance but also some conversations during our time together that may be seen as difficult ones to explore but have simultaneously been monumental in deepening our connection and intimacy with each other. Conversations containing the idea of breaking up as well as putting the idea of opening up our relationship on the table. When you look at what a great relationship might be for you, this might be the type of relationship or marriage you wouldn't consider… the long-distance type. Kalpana Raghuramen shares some amazing insights with Simone Milasas into how throughout her 12-year marriage she and her husband have created global careers and neither their personal or professional lives suffered or were sacrificed. It's a glimpse into relationships done different. In this episode you will get to explore: How they created their relationships while living in different countries and travelling with their careers. The unconventional reason they chose to get married. Very pragmatic tools to communicate to ask for what you would like. How a pandemic put even more distance between them. As both audience members and actors, you will learn to sing the classic Easter sequence hymn 'Victimae paschali laudes' ('Praises to the paschal victim') and see how it formed part of a medieval play. Gregorian chant is an ancient communal song tradition, much loved for its calming, meditative feel – but we are increasingly appreciating its dramatic and even emotional aspects. This workshop will showcase a play performed in medieval Wienhausen (the Wienhäuser Osterspiel), a Middle Low German drama focusing on Mary Magdalene. As both audience members and actors, you will learn to sing the classic Easter sequence hymn 'Victimae paschali laudes' ('Praises to the paschal victim') and see how it formed part of a medieval play. No experience of singing, music reading, or ancient languages required - and from the comfort of your own home, no strangers can hear you!
The final episode of Series One is with Priya Parker. Through her writing, group facilitation as work as a conflict mediator, she helps people create collective meaning in modern life. Priya is an important voice in the conversation around human connection and, according to Deepak Chopra, ‘has created both an art and a science to gathering in ways that can bring joy and fulfilment to any meeting.” She is the author of ‘The Art Of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters' and is the host of New York Times podcast ‘Together Apart.' We talk about: -Priya's personal experience of group singing -the need for individual expression within collective practise -how to create transformative experiences through gathering -how Priya's book has influenced James's work as singing leader -the need to create new types of gathering in an increasingly globalised world -why being specific and purposeful in our gatherings is important -the TikTok shanty sensation of 2021 as a creative response to lockdown -the demise of communal singing and the rise of solo performative singing Sign up to Priya's monthly newsletter: https://www.priyaparker.com/newsletter Priya's website: https://www.priyaparker.com/ Join the Sofa Singers: www.thesofasingers.com Podcast playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1TWeFKowQ9tCSOEPQ8xmvQ?si=FoCok6QRRfSIyfMMoFtcNQ Follow James on Instagram, Twitter & Facebook.
Building on the repertoire from our previous workshop, we will add further pieces for Candlemas where everybody is invited to join in by singing the communal response Gregorian chant is an ancient communal song tradition with its roots in the medieval Church, but its calming, meditative effect has made it a surprise hit in lockdown. Sing in the comfort of your own home (where no strangers can hear you!) in this online choir session suitable for the absolute beginner. Medieval researchers will also give a brief introduction to the 15th-century manuscript from the Cistercian nunnery of Medingen where the music is preserved.

In this episode, hosts Alan and Susan discuss being together apart by first looking back to how they discovered a love of camping. It started with a small tent over a weekend at Red Top Mountain. Over time, they slowly acquired more gear. They didn't invest all at once. They had to learn what worked each time they went and what they were missing. The discussion was really about learning how to grow their love of something they could do together. But, it's equally important to know how to do things apart. Where Alan likes the "glamping" style of being outdoors, Susan also likes to backpack. This often means wilderness camping, which does not appeal as much to Alan. Guess what? That's okay. Rather than impose their wills on each other, they realize it is okay to have separate pursuits. If one were to force their will on the other, it will only lead to resentment and worse. This leads to a story Alan relayed to his daughter about workplace relationships. If you let someone else continue to get away with actions that irritate you, but say nothing, it will never get better. But, the longer you wait, the worse it gets for you. Learning to communicate early and directly seems so cliche, but is still so hard for many to do. The show then ends with a fitness discussion over vitamin D and how important it is to get directly sunlight a few times a week. So many get up before dawn, spend their day in an office and return at sunset. Vitamin D is so important to a healthy and robust immune system. Plus, sunlight has been shown to improve energy and attitude. So, make a point of getting outside in the sun 3-4 times a week.
