Big Changes Ahead for RambleHey friends,We've got some big changes coming to Ramble, and I wanted to take a moment to share them with you. Over the past few years, I've been wrestling with a lot — grief, burnout, and the constant balancing act of running a small business. And in that time, one phrase has kept coming up: “Do less with more intention.” It's a simple idea, but one that's become more meaningful as I reflect on what I truly want for Ramble, my family and myself. So, here's what's happening:Phase 1: Outsourcing our PrintingAfter much thought, I've made the difficult decision to outsource our printing. The truth is, I just can't do it anymore. We've found some incredibly talented and trustworthy printers who will be taking over the physical and manual labor side of our operations. Over the last year, I've noticed a decline in quality, and it started to chip away at my creativity and passion for design. This shift will allow me to get back to what I love—planning and designing great garments for you. It's my hope that I can get back to what used to fuel me. Thoughtful and intentional designs that bring encouragement, fun and humor into the world. And who knows, the Ramble Box may come back! Phase 2: Moving Our Wichita Falls LocationThe next step in our intentional simplification is moving our Wichita Falls location into a shared space with our amazing neighbor and fellow small business owner, Resupply at The Yucca House. We believe that two is better than one, and combining our stores will allow us to operate more efficiently, financially, and with a greater sense of community. We have absolutely loved serving the Wichita Falls community with a standalone store for the past 9 years, and we are so grateful for all of your support. We believe this change will open up new possibilities and allow us to have more energy and capacity to say “yes” to even more opportunities for Wichita Falls in the year ahead. Our space at Resupply will be thoughtfully curated with Wichita Falls goods, Ramble favorites, gifts, and more—still very much a place that reflects the heart of Ramble, just in a new setting.Final ThoughtsThis decision has not been an easy one. Change, while necessary, can be tough, but we're embracing this new chapter with open arms. We're excited about what lies ahead and can't wait to continue this journey with all of you.Thank you for your unwavering support—whether you've been with us since day one or just recently discovered Ramble, we appreciate you more than words can express.I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Wichita Falls is a quirky place to live and own a shop. I wholeheartedly believe joining forces with another local business is going to be amazing. I've long admired and respected the hard work that Kacie, owner of Resupply, has poured into her shop, as well as Shea and Cody, the owners of Yucca House. It's truly an honor to team up with them and bring one incredible shop to Downtown Wichita Falls. Here's to simplifying, recharging, and making the next chapter the best one yet. With love,KathrynFollow along on IG for BTS @rambleandcompany + email me if you have questions >> kathryn@rambleandcompany.com :)

ep. 24 \ Way Out West Trip to Big Bend National Park

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2025 22:24

Day 1:We drove from Wichita Falls to Monahans Sandhills State Park. We spent about 2 hours in the park hiking and sledding down sandhills. This park is very small, and you can rent sleds at the Visitor Center for $6 per sled per day. They do have camping at this park, but we chose to continue on to Balmorhea State Park. The campgrounds there have been recently renovated, and the facility was amazing. We got there right before dark and took a quick dip in the pool— we had the place all to ourselves! The water stays around 74-76 degrees year-round, so it wasn't too cold. Be sure to bring towels because, as soon as we got out, it was quite nippy! The park was at full capacity, so plan ahead and book your site before you get there.Day 2:We woke up early and headed out to spend time in Marfa before driving into Terlingua. We drove through Fort Davis before getting to Marfa, and we could have easily spent more time there. The Davis Mountains are beautiful, and we plan to make a return trip!We took our sweet time, with no agenda except checking into our rental. It was a barn with three rooms that we rented out. We met my parents, two siblings, their spouses, and kids there. They each got a room, while I slept in the van with one of the girls. The other two girls slept on the couches in the common room to have more space. We were able to hike around the property, visit the ghost town, and check out some of the old mine spots. We also enjoyed looking at all the amazing rocks, ocotillo, and cactus.Day 3:We decided to wake up early (ish) and get a good breakfast in our bellies before heading into the park. We went to the Chisos Basin portion of Big Bend National Park to hike the Window Trail. It's about an hour and a half from Terlingua to this part of the park. This trail is a great option for families with small children and adults. There were 7 adults and 9 kids in our group. The 2-year-olds were in backpack carriers, and the others, aged 4 and up, hiked themselves. The trail is about 4.5 miles in total, and it took us around 2 hours to complete. We didn't rush and took our time, letting the kids climb on rocks along the way. It definitely could be done faster, but we enjoyed a leisurely pace. After finishing the hike, we all ate lunch and then headed to the Hot Springs, which is about a 45-minute drive (give or take). The last mile or two before you can park is very narrow, and parking is limited, but we got lucky and found spots for all three of our vehicles. The Hot Springs Trail is short and easy. I highly recommend visiting this spot when you're in Big Bend! The hot springs water stays around 105°F, and it's a small pool area where you can sit and soak. The Rio Grande runs right next to the hot spring, so it was fun to warm up in the spring and then dip into the chilly river! We spent about an hour there before driving back to Terlingua, which took about an hour. We arrived back at our home away from home around 4:30 PM.We had planned our meals ahead of time, and all but one were crockpot meals, which worked perfectly since we had a hot meal waiting for us after a long day of hiking.Day 4:We decided to hike the Mule Ears Spring Trail, a short, 2-mile trail that's an easier hike. This trail is in full sun, not in the Chisos with trees, so make sure to wear long sleeves, bring a hat, and apply sunscreen! At the end (or halfway through) this trail, there is a tiny spring of water flowing out of the rocks, surrounded by green ferns. It was beautiful and very surprising, considering the entire hike is through desert cacti and rocks. I highly recommend it!A few kids were on "breakdown mode" for part of the trail, so it took a bit longer, but we weren't in a rush. Next, we drove to Santa Elena Canyon, which is an iconic and breathtaking location in the park. The canyon is so grand and beautiful that it's hard to describe its beauty. The trail is easy, and most of our group completed it. While we were there, we also saw a pack of wild horses grazing near the river, which was pretty cool!Afterward, we took the highway out of the park to return to Terlingua, but you can also take a “shortcut” down Old Maverick Road, an 11-mile stretch of bumpy dirt roads. Two of the three cars in our group took the dirt road, while my parents, kids, and I drove the longer but smoother highway. We all arrived back at our place within 5-10 minutes of each other, so it wasn't much of a difference!Day 5:Everyone was ready for a more relaxed day since it was our last full day in West Texas. We decided to visit Big Bend Ranch State Park to hike the Closed Canyon Trail. The road from Terlingua the state park is a scenic, beautiful highway that runs alongside the Rio Grande. The Closed Canyon Trail is short, easy, and stunning! You do need to stop at the visitor center to get your permit before entering the park.We had lunch at the end of the trail in a shady spot before heading back to the house. In the afternoon, half of our group went on another adventure near our property, while the other half went shopping and grabbed a margarita at the Star Light Theatre. We never ate at the Star Light, but here's a tip: get there early if you want a spot! The line starts forming at 3 PM, and the restaurant opens at 5 PM. The Cantina opens at 4 PM. We tried the frozen prickly pear margaritas, and they were delicious! We let the kids explore the store, and each of them picked out a souvenir. Then we walked to the Terlingua Cemetery, which turned out to be a very special experience. The kids loved reading the tombstones, and if a grave didn't have one, they would talk about who it could be and what might have happened to them. It was unexpected but really beautiful to see the empathy and compassion the kids showed for the people there.I highly recommend getting a map of the Terlingua Ghost Town and exploring the old buildings, school, and church to learn more about this small mining town.Final Thoughts:West Texas is vast and wide open, with many miles between towns and not much that's convenient, so you'll need to plan ahead. Fuel up whenever you can, especially in Alpine or Marathon, depending on which side of Big Bend you're entering from. You'll also want to plan your meals and pack food well. We cooked every breakfast and dinner and brought snacks and sandwiches for lunch while hiking. Also, bring plenty of water!I'm sure I left a lot out of this summary of our Far West Texas trip, but the main takeaway is that it's beautiful. It's one of the most majestic areas I've been to. I love the lack of cell service and the bright, starry skies—so amazing to see! The area has very little light pollution, so be sure to plan to stargaze while you're there. I would love to know if you've been or if you plan to go way out west. I've designed a new collection around this trip and it will launch late January to early February. Chat soon!

The feeling of burnout is part exhaustion and also fear. I worry that I've shuffled through my first decade of being a mother and I'm trying to discern what's best for my girls for the next decade. They are growing, maturing and I have no doubt that I've been able to teach them good and beautiful things through operating and running Ramble & Co. However, I worry about my ability to be truly present with them during critical and formative years. They support me, encourage me, and are my biggest fans when it comes to design, colors, and products we curate for the shop. My husband, Ryan, is the most supportive human and I can't imagine doing life without him. He has comforted me, listened and allowed me to sit in my thoughts and fears. Well, I would be lying to you if I said I haven't sat in this feeling and complained about it. For a few months I let it completely take over and I was having a hard time finding the joy around me. Then one day, around the first of March, I flipped the switch. I decided that I could shift how and what I worked on each day. I could be present with a more positive outlook on my work/life balance. Instead of feeling the weight of all the work and expectations, I could lean on my team more than I ever have. I'm consciously working less, I've started outsourcing a portion of our printing, and I I'm making time for myself, my thoughts, and my family. If I had to pick one word for this year it would be “trust” which is playing off my phrase for last year, “do less with more intention”. I hope this episode finds you well. I encourage you to journal your goals for the future, the things you desire for your day-to-day, and the fears that are controlling you. I am excited to share that I will be continuing my role at Ramble but making space to pursue consulting. I am currently still working on getting my website and social media up but I do have a survey I would love for you to fill out for me! Let's play catch-up! Many of you know that I've been printing shirts for 15 years and have been a full time entrepreneur + shop owner for 9 years. My girls, ages 12, 10, and 7 have been born into a crazy hustle of life and work that I'm both proud of and exhausted from. I had a small medical issue last September followed by losing both of my grandfathers within a month of each other. Needless to say, I ended 2023 feeling an ache of burnout. I've sat in it, shared with close friends and family and have been praying for what chapter is next for myself, my family and my company. I recorded this episode in December 2023 and am ready to be more open about my current season. I've been doing a lot of personal + business behind the scenes work that I'm ready to start sharing about. This episode is going to start the next season for this show. When we experience joy we have a habit of attaching that emotion to certain places, things, and people as if it solely came from an outer source when in reality genuine joy comes from yourself. Joy is surrounding you at all times but it is up to you to access it! As women it is as if we are born with the constant worry of being enough which is a very heavy weight to carry. How do we get rid of that weight that has been so deeply engraved into our being? When we focus on building the joy that is within ourselves and become more intentional with it, we will no longer have the energy to feed into this false sense of unworthiness. The heaviness and hurt isn't a part of you. It isn't meant to last forever. We are born with joy beaming through us and the only thing that changes is how the world teaches us to see it. You are worthy at all times and have everything you need within yourself to be confident in who you are and what you want which will bring genuine joy into yourself. Special guest, Sundee Williams, joins Kathryn and Allison on the discussion of Joy: how to keep it, how to access it, and how to acknowledge that it is always around you. What is one way you can ensure you are holding onto joy on the good and hard days? We love hearing a chorus of laughter coming from a friend-filled living room, squishy baby thighs, and breaking out into spontaneous dance parties with our kids. We love the slow start of a day with a steaming cup of coffee as much as the feeling of satisfaction after a hard day's work. We believe in balance; knowing when to speed up and when to pump the brakes. We believe in the wondrous power of paint and a good color palette. We believe that anything old can be made new if you work hard and that perfection doesn't exist, only perfect moments. We believe in celebrating and respecting diversity as it appears in the form of color, culture, language, or belief. We believe that each and every human has deep worth and beauty that is unique to themselves and we actively fight to stand against any form of discrimination that would say otherwise. We believe that when women are for one another, worlds can change and where sincere friendship exists, insecurity and loneliness cannot survive. We believe true community exists when we allow our stories to be woven together like a tapestry of belonging that covers us wherever we go. We believe that being connected to our own stories equips us to play a unique role in our community. We believe there is power and healing when we stop talking and listen to one another. We believe in the value of presence. We believe in learning from our mistakes and never settling for less than what we are capable of accomplishing.

Walk with us as we walk through: The different levels of connection What role “self awareness”  plays in the realm of connection and why it is important to be able to build healthy/lasting relationships. the role  The walls we can put up that can prevent us from connecting with those around us. Reflection questions: Why is connection important to you?  Why do you need it? How do you like to connect with others? What is keeping you from connecting with others in this season? How does your own “Self awareness” play a part in your connections with others? Ask yourself - am I viewing this from a healthy/free lense or through the lense of hurt/insecurity/fear?
