Production assistants might have the toughest job in Hollywood, especially before the internet, but the late nights and early mornings sure did make for some unforgettable stories. The gang is talking to former Boy Meets World PA, and current bigwig TV producer, John Beck, to find out what REALLY happened behind the scenes, from a whole new, entry level position. John reveals how, well before he created "Liv & Maddy," he was “accidentally” hired as a Production Assistant for the show, which he admittedly thought was called “Boy Meets Girl." We hear the highs and the lows, from driving scripts to cast members' houses to getting in trouble for bringing TOO MUCH Koo Koo Roo to the writers room. And with his vast production experience on shows like "Fuller House," "According to Jim" and "That Girl Lay Lay," he shares some invaluable advice for those looking to break into the industry. We're meeting an unsung hero who climbed his way all the up the industry ladder, with a very familiar start - on an all-new Pod Meets World! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Christie Hodgen is the author of four books of fiction, most recently the novel Boy Meets Girl, which won the 2020 AWP Award for the Novel. Her short fiction and essays have been included in dozens of literary journals and have won two Pushcart Prizes. She teaches in the MFA program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is the editor of New Letters. A sense of place looms large in the first essay discussed in this episode, “Disintegration” by Karen Fisher. Her job in the hinterlands of east New Orleans involves recycling, hogs that wander around and a boss who is equally beastly as he threatens to fire her. Wrestling for control of her circumstances is tough for the author, in a place that writes “off neglect as charm.” In “On Emptiness” by Joyde Dehli, a poetic sensibility shines. Fear is in the air, as Dehli notes that in response one can flee, fight, freeze or faint, to which might be added a fifth option: fawning, which the author does beautifully over a world that defies definition. In “Right Now, I'm a Chauffeur” by Bud Jennings get ready for sharp-tongued discourse. The narrator's mom drops line like “Dullards like that should only be allowed cockroaches as pets,” and the essay goes from there in exploring what it's like to come home to care for your mom versus the lively, coming-out life you led in New York City. Finally, in “A Little Slice of the Moon” by Summer Hammond we encounter a young girl from a Jehovah's Witnesses family that finds a door into a wider world through, of all things, a job at McDonalds. You'll find yourself rooting for her to find romance and more. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. Fashioncast®Episode #49, July 16, 2024Stacy Igel, Fashion's Queen of CollaborationListen closely fashionistas! On this episode we introduce you to “fashionpreneuer” extraordinaire Stacy Igel, Founder Boy Meets Girl apparel company and best-selling author of Embracing The Calm In The Chaos. As Stacy says, she was interested in fashion while “still in the womb,” and her history since birth reinforces her prenatal yearning to build a career in fashion. What makes this episode so appealing is that Igel is both a steadfast businessperson and a creative. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Igel made her mark as a hosiery salesperson when Marshall Fields hired her while still in the eighth grade! She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she tripled majored in design, merchandising, and retail. She soon moved to New York City to learn the fashion business from the ground up, and in 2001 she launched the Boy Meets Girl apparel company.Whether interviewing Igel, or writing about her, one always is in high gear. Igel is kind, intelligent, professional, and yes, humorous. But more than anything else, Igel is full of positive energy, and constantly multitasking like the entrepreneur, designer, and mother you would expect!Fashioncast could have easily produced two episodes out of this interview, one focused on Igel's phenomenally successful company, Boy Meets Girl, and another on her equally successful book, Embracing The Calm In The Chaos. The book details Igel's fashion journey including the launch of her brand. We found Igel's interview full of one surprise after another. This is after all, someone who has made her way in New York's fashion world through twenty years of grit and determination. Boy Meets Girl sports a Who's Who list of collaborations with industry heavyweights from Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom to Bergdorf Goodman and the Chicago Bulls. Igel has come a long way since dressing classmates in grade school!Of course, Fashioncast probed Igel about sustainability, the lack of a business curriculum in fashion colleges, and the big issues she believes are headwinds for the industry. We are certain you will find Stacy Igel as energetic, knowledgeable, and entertaining as we did! Please enjoy the show!www.boymeetsgirlusa.com www.stacyigel.comhttps://www.amazon.com/Embracing-Calm-Chaos-Perseverance-Collaboration/dp/140023493X

Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works about idealized lives, and ideas about what constitutes an “ideal” life. “Boy Meets Girl” is Jen Kim's humorous version of a Hollywood love story. It's read by Tony Hale. In the John Cheever classic “The Worm in the Apple” a couple have the perfect life—but no one can believe it. It's read by Anne Meara. And a harried mother fantasizes about a brand new life in Vanessa Cuti's “Our Children,” performed by Claire Danes, followed by an interview with Danes..

Stacy does it all! She has learned how to embrace the calm in the chaos!!! Stacy challenges and inspires us to be responsible, kind, and courageous! She makes entrepreneurship look attainable and exciting with her out-of-the-box thinking and then taking action. However, I am most compelled by how she educates and gives back through her philanthropy branding and entrepreneurship. "Stacy Igel is Founder & Creative Director of BOY MEETS GIRL®, a young contemporary athleisure brand. Igel's a proud mom of son @dylanreidigel, industry leader & writes a lifestyle blog, Behind the Seams™ with Stacy Igel. She is also is the co-creator and co-host of the podcast MOMSGOTTHIS for mompreneurs. As part of her entrepreneurial endeavors, charity is a large focus. She has been a chair for several years for the YSCs ILP Gala & is a brand ambassador for the NSCC's BullyBust campaign. Igel's received several design awards & honors. She is a lecturer & panelist on subjects such as social media, philanthropy, branding & entrepreneurship." When Stacy agreed to be on my podcast, I was thrilled as I am with all my guests. However, this was a little different. Her book, Embracing the Calm in the Chaos: How to Find Success in Business and Life Through Perseverance, Connection, and Collaboration Inspired me as an entrepreneur, as a mom, as a woman, as a creative, and in so many other ways. There were so many moments in her story where Stacy stepped out of fear and into her confidence, competence, and vision, making things happen! So, I tapped into my confidence, competence, and vision and asked her to be on the podcast! Of course, she said "yes" because she's a fantastic giving soul. She's been giving back through her company for 23+ years, so I wasn't shocked at her willingness to pour a little love into my creative project :-) Her book is filled with wisdom. Stacy does everything with intention, purpose, and meaning, whether it's the collaboration with a cause or her creative values. I'm so thrilled to have had this conversation with Stacy. Whether you're reading her book as an entrepreneur or not, you will learn so much about perseverance, connection, collaboration, and all the amazing things that can happen when we step into the adventure of connecting and giving back. I am super excited about her latest collaboration with Strawberry Shortcake! Enjoy the conversation! And if you are inspired, share this episode with someone you love so they can be inspired. ~Heather

When a boy falls in love with a girl, he takes an interest in the things that interest her. Similarly, as we become more closely associated with the Lord, we will begin to love what He loves. In July of this summer, I did my very first BroadwayCon, which is an annual conference here in New York City about all things Broadway and theater, and while I was there, I got to be a part of events hosted by the Broadway Podcast Network. I conducted live interviews with two actors that I've had the pleasure of working with before: Jelani Alladin and Sharon Catherine Brown. Sharon's interview will actually be featured in a few weeks on my other podcast Closing Night, so follow that theater history podcast on my episode about Jekyll & Hyde. But for today on this podcast, you'll get to hear from Jelani Alladin as we discuss his time in Frozen and Hercules, and why the musical Violet is so meaningful and important to him. You'll also get to hear his answers to the final five questions, which I usually reserve for WINMI subscribers, but that's just some of the little treats you'll be getting in this special episode live from BroadwayCon 2023. If you're like me and you were a child of the 80's, then Jason Donovan was your world. He burst onto our screens as the star of Neighbours, Scott and Charlene, Jason and Kylie… at the peak of the soap opera's powers. Jason became famous in Australia and around the world, particularly the UK where he'd launch his pop career and a wild adventurous life. That life was filled with ups and downs, drug addiction, controversy, but also new beginnings. For the past 20 years, Jason has been a star of musical theatre, wowing audiences with turns in Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, Chicago, and the Rocky Horror show. It's that production that's brought him back home, starring in the 50th anniversary tour as Frank n' Furter. And I just had to have him Take 5. Jason is a bloody legend, he has a brilliant outlook on life and a gratitude and lightness in how he approaches it. So I gave him the theme of LIFE – why not hey? He's had a heck of one, so far. From Bowie to INXS to Rick Astley, this Take 5 will give you life. We've been working on trying to pull together a very special episode which contains both an interview with a band, a special guest, and seeing us tackle a genre that we've yet to cover. We came so close to nailing one of these things but last week we were thwarted by illness. Which left us without an episode for this week. So we're rolling out some bonus content for you and it's episode FIVE of UNSONG where we talk about a single song that we think is an unsung classic. Chris has picked 80s pop banger Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl. If you like this, you can find more by subscribing to the show on Patreon.

We're going extra-deep this week with alternative rock group The Coolies. The name comes from a derogatory term for 19th century Chinese immigrants who had to work hard for little pay. The Atlanta based group was only around for about three years and produced two albums. The first called "dig..?" was largely a collection of Simon and Garfunkel covers. Their second album, Doug, is a rock opera with an odd premise.Doug follows the rise and fall of a skinhead named Doug. He kills a transvestite who happens to be a cook, and becomes rich by using the stolen recipe book. The money is spent in riotous living, and in the end Doug ends up right where he began. The Coolies vocalist and front man was Clay Harper. Other band members included Jeb Baldwin, Rob Gal, Teddy Murray, and for this album had Frogg Jaguar Mellonball (most interesting artist name) on percussion. He replaced Billy Burton, who was percussionist for the first album but was unavailable for “Doug” due to his commitments to The Swimming Pool Q's, another locally well known alternative band.Harper would go on to be the owner of Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina restaurants in Atlanta. It is not believed that the events from the Rock Opera are in any way connected to Harper's future culinary success.Wayne takes us on this deep cut journey to explore one of his favorite albums. Ice Cold SoulThe lead track introduces Doug, the main character of the rock opera. He is a skin head with the Pledge of Allegiance tattooed on the side of his head. He hangs out with his fellow skin heads stealing from people, beating them up, and generally being intimidating. “Schlitz Malt Liquor is my favorite food and pissed off is my favorite mood.”Pussy CookThe transvestite cook is warned not to walk where the “skin heads chill,” but failed to heed the warning. After beating up and killing the cook, Doug and his gang “open up the purse to get a good look. Got the money and the dope and the recipe book.” There are a lot of similarities between this song and “Cooky Puss” by the Beastie Boys, which this song spoofs.40 Foot StretchThis track continues the tale with Doug living large in the back of a stretch limousine. We're beginning to question whether that recipe book was referencing food...or something else! This song has a sound reminiscent of Miami Vice.Crack Pipe BurningIt is becoming obvious that things are not going to end happily ever after with Doug. The reference at the end of the song to “I got blisters on my fingers” hearkens back to a statement Ringo Starr makes at the end of the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do You Love Me by the Contours (from the motion picture “Dirty Dancing”)This 1962 single made a resurgence after appearing in 1987's “Dirty Dancing” film, and was on the charts in the summer of 1988. STAFF PICKS:Rough Night in Jericho by Dreams So RealBruce stays with the local flavor with his staff pick featuring a trio from Athens, Georgia. The lead-off and title track from the band's second album hit number 28 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. The band produced three albums in total, with this song being their most successful single. Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl Rob brings us a more pop song than he normally features. Keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill met singer Shannon Rubicam at a wedding where they were hired to perform, and later got married themselves, making it a “boy meets girl” story. In addition to this song which made it to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo also wrote songs for other performers including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil Lynch's staff pick is a protest song from Australia's Midnight Oil. It criticizes the Australian government for its treatment of Aboriginal communities in forcing them off their lands. Midnight Oil performed this song at the Sydney Olympics, and wore jackets that said, “sorry” after the Australian government would not apologize for the treatment of Aboriginal people. This Note's for You by Neil Young & The Bluenotes Wayne features another protest song, this time from Neil Young. At the time many rock bands and artists were being recruited to appear in commercials for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Budweiser, and other consumer goods and drinks. MTV controversially banned the video for a period of time due to concerns from advertisers, proving Young's point. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:End Title (from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?") by Alan SilvestriThis live action/animation combination was a hit on the big screens in June of 1988.

The songwriting duo Boy Meets Girl wrote chart-topping songs for several iconic artists, but it wasn't until their 1988 single “Waiting for a Star to Fall” that they made a name for themselves as performers. The song was an enduring adult contemporary juggernaut, even finding its way into the hit film Three Men and a Little Lady a few years later. Even after their marriage ended, their song collaborations forged ahead, and they continue to release pop gems even today. This week, we explore their story and their songs, and we try to decide if Boy really should have met Girl in the first place. If you like the show, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam AKA Boy Meets Girl have given 'How WIll I Know' a bubbly new twist in celebration of Whitney Houston's incredible career - a story that is being told in the forthcoming biopic 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' - released globally in cinemas on 21 December. This brand new mix will be available as one of the bonus tracks on the vinyl release of the 2021 EP 'Five' released under their famous moniker Boy Meets Girl. The EP is unmistakably THEM, and on the B side, it includes instrumental and alternate mixes of the tracks. Their prolific style produced some of the biggest global hits ever, including Boy Meets Girl's #1 song 'Waiting For A Star To Fall' and of course Whitney's #1 hits 'How Will I Know' and 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)'. Chiming throughout, it's this sound that made them one of the most sought after songwriting duos of the 80s and 90s.George and Shannon's influence on Whitney's career cannot be understated. Her 1995 release 'How Will I Know' written by the duo, was the song that sent Whitney Houston's career stratospheric and helped make her the global superstar that we know and love today. Then in 1997, when her star could not rise any higher, or so it was thought, a second song written by George and Shannon was released - 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)' - hitting the top of the charts all over the world, it ripped up dance floors, sent kitchen discos into overdrive and this song, alongside 'How Will I Know' and Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' - unquestionably became tracks that are synonymous with Whitney's career and her incredible voice. In their own words, George and Shannon share the incredible lives of these tracks and how they felt when they first saw the Whitney biopic..."'How Will I Know' was written in our funky little Venice, California garage, roughly 1984. Written for Janet Jackson (she passed on it as she was about to release her groundbreaking Control album), Brenda Andrews at Irving Music played the demo for A&R icon Gerry Griffith who was songhunting for a "new young singer". Gerry convinced Clive Davis, and Clive chose the song as one of the featured tracks for Whitney's first album; he chose as producer Narada Michael Walden. Narada made significant musical additions to the song and took it to new heights with his punchy bright production. Soon after, a phone call came from friends Alan and Preston Glass, in the studio with Narada after Whitney's vocal session. "You gotta hear this!", and they held the phone up to the speakers and blasted the opening bars of 'How Will I Know'... I think we about fell on the floor! The track and Whitney's voice were SO powerful. It was one of the great moments, and still is a thrill to hear our song over the sound system in a grocery store or being sung by generations of contestants on American Idol or The Voice, and we are forever grateful to Fate for aligning so perfectly!"As a follow up, Clive requested that we write another song for Whitney's second album. 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' was the song that emerged. By that time, of course we understood the soulful and joyous impact of Whitney's voice and were better able to tailor something for her. Clive liked the demo straight off, and again Narada was the producer. And Whitney the unmatchable singer, so we knew everything was in the best hands. It's hard to explain the feeling of having written such time-tested hits, because once a song leaves the studio and goes out into the world, it belongs to the performer and the listeners and fans; and you as songwriter have to let go.
