When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it's a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What's the difference between a toxic person and someone who's broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it's time to walk away from a toxic person? In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Elisa and Eryn take us through a previous conversation with Gary Thomas who will be leading us in a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people.   About our guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today's show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 35 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.   Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn't always a statement of failure; it's a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here's my voice, here's my mission” . . .  and don't let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you're crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don't want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.”   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary's book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Gary's Instagram: garythomasbooks   Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. Welcome to Day 1598 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomUnderstanding Ourselves – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1598 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from C. S. Lewis, and it is:  When a man is getting better, he understands more and more clearly the evil that is still in him. When a man is getting worse, he understands his own badness less and less.   Understanding Ourselves Humans have the innate ability to deceive themselves and rationalize anything they do as okay, which is also true of Christ-followers. The unusual phenomenon with this tendency is that we judge others most harshly for the flawed character attributes that we have within ourselves. I believe Jesus points this out in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%206%3A37&version=NLT (Luke 6:37) “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. When we can understand what evil resides within our hearts more clearly, we will know when we are committing acts in thoughts, words, or actions that are not in harmony with God's precepts in His Word. It is also then when we can be more understanding and compassionate with fellow humans who are struggling and may not be aware of the evil that lurks within. That is why it is imperative that we continually check our hearts and minds and daily purge the evil that crops up within. If we allow evil to corrupt our thoughts, words, and actions, it will not be long until we are no longer aware or understand it to be evil. We will be deceiving ourselves and not be aware that we are doing so. As image-bearers of God, let us each day seek to emulate the ultimate and perfect image-bearer of God, Jesus Christ.  We will then be able to see our weaknesses and continue to grow in our wisdom and knowledge of God. Otherwise, we are deceiving ourselves and become insensitive to our current state of mind. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+2%3A1-5&version=NLT (Philippians 2:1-5) Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1597 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly, I am your friend as I serve you through...

Following this, the pastor's talk about Circle of Hope's vision for Village Parenting, and how to raise and foster children's faith by not reducing their faith development to moral lessons and instruction, and offering the space to creatively imagine how we worship and how we relate to God. This week is a look at the statues being torn down across the country, not just Confederate monuments but also those of the Christian faith. Father Joe and Father Rix debate the importance of statues that cross the lines into the importance of those symbols for faith communities, both who have a very different take on what's going on. While we can be divided on a topic like this, both Rix and Joe encourage us to overcome the anger and frustrations we feel in order to find dialogue and conversations that can move us forwards and heal us as Children of God who all deserve love and respect. Father Joe's Pride Sunday sermon: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=943994972706986 Scripture of the Day: Matthew 10:37-42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+10%3A37-42&version=NRSV   Podbean (our host site): https://police2priest.podbean.com/ |Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3a7bHecWAsFAv17PCJVTwI |  Itunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/from-police-to-priest-fp2p/id1488164625 |  Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/m/Idyy2pwdjjn3r5eqmkxb4tm7fgy?t=From_Police_to_Priest_FP2P  |  ListenNotes: https://listennotes.com/podcasts/from-police-to-priest-fp2p-police2priest-f0n6oqLzwxu/  |Castbox: https://castbox.fm/channel/From-Police-to-Priest-(FP2P)-id2465059?country=us |---Contact us at: stjosephmissionsocialmedia@gmail.com |Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/saintjosephmissionchurch |Creation and Distribution by: VNR Media, LLC |Made possible by: Saint Joseph Mission Church, Cliffside Park, NJ |Co-Host: Dr. Joseph Ciccone | Executive Producer, Executive Editor, Co-Host: Rix Thorsell |Artwork Provided by: Sam Proctor (@dedluv_ripvd) www.instagram.com/dedluv_ripvd |Copyright 2020 (C) Rix Thorsell - All Rights Reserved
