Welcome to Day 1729 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomPay It Forward – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1729 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Albert Einstein, and it is: A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. Pay It Forward The concept behind this quote from Albert Einstein is also the core of Wisdom-Trek: our lives should be a living legacy to others. No person is self-made because who we are today is primarily determined by other people who influence and impact our lives. By God's grace, He has allowed the lives and labors of others in history past, or our current season of life, to help us learn and grow. These individuals helped to shape and form our God-given abilities and talents so that we can be all that God intended for us. We need to make sure that we pass these same benefits to others by positively impacting anyone who crosses through our trek of life. This concept is what it means to create a living legacy so that you are influencing others every day, and that all you do will echo through eternity in the lives of others. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Thessalonians%205%3A11&version=NLT (1 Thessalonians 5:11) So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2015%3A2&version=NLT (Romans 15:2) We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.   Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Your Failure Point None of us know with certainty how far we can go until we reach the point of failure, as indicated in our quote today. A competitive high jumper who desires to improve and excel will not quit the first time they crash into the bar. Instead, they will keep practicing and working on their techniques to reach new heights each time they compete. So it is with any desire which we pursue. If we quit the first time we fail, our life will be marked with a series of failures. That is not what God expects from us, nor should we expect from ourselves. We need to pick ourselves up from the mat, return to the starting line, and try again. Once we clear the current hurdle, we need to ask for the bar to be raised to improve and succeed at a higher level. You will never know how far you can go until you reach a temporary point of failure. Once you analyze why you failed, and have an opportunity to learn and improve, you can continue towards your new goal or destination. You are never a failure until you chose to quit. Have faith that God will take you to new heights based on your God-given talents and abilities.  You may amaze yourself with how far you can go. So, keep moving forward! https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Thessalonians+1%3A11-12&version=NLT (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12) So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ. Our sin doesn't just break God's laws; it breaks us. In order to understand why God is so concerned with the thoughts, words and deeds of "little old me," we have to go back to a time before sin stained the picture. We'll see humans without shame. We can compare that with our own, fallen state. And we'll be saddened by the change to God's image-bearers. Yesterday Jim said there were two rules for Adam and Eve. The first was not to eat of the fruit of a certain tree.... People think of divine judgment as something out in the distant future. But it's happening now, too. Yes, there will be a "Day" of reckoning, but sin began inflicting its own misery a long time ago. We'll consider both types of judgment as we resume the sermon we debuted on Friday, Saved from What? The book of Romans gives us a good explanation of why our world has lost its collective mind, and Genesis will take us back to a time before it all went pear-shaped. Here's Jim in Romans 1. Our world seems to have gone insane. The reason for that is found in the book of Romans. Reality, reason and common sense are under fierce attack. If you say "2 plus 2 is 4," you'll be driven from the public square, and perhaps re-educated. How do so many people come to believe nonsense? Well, it starts by "suppressing the truth." Today we begin a survey of Paul's letter to the Romans. It concerns salvation. So Jim starts by asking, Saved from What? Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  We are on Day 1696 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Rembrandt, and it is:  A godly mind prizes honor above worldly good. A Godly Mind What Rembrandt described in this quote can also be labeled integrity. It is a person of integrity who has filled their minds with the character trait of honor and morally right attributes. It is a person who is noted for their right living in every situation and will not change for a person's praise or monetary gain. Instead, the godly mind is altered by allowing God's precepts to permeate their every thought. This kind of person expects it from themselves and those with whom they invest time. They are not after monetary gain if it means sacrificing their integrity. Yes, you can have both, but a person of integrity will never compromise to gain worldly good. They are too honorable to obtain what they may desire today if it means their honor would be sacrificed. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus+2%3A11-14&version=NLT (Titus 2:11-14) For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds. April 25, 2021. Scripture is filled with images of nature, and one thing evident in all of the stories, and all of our own experiences in God's creation, is the theme of connection of God to nature, and connection to God through nature. Readings: 1 John 3:16-24, Psalm 23, John 10:11-18 *** Transcript *** One of my favorite places in Minnesota is Gooseberry Falls, on the North Shore. From the parking lot, you pass by the Visitor's Center and make your way toward the water, the splashing of the water against the rocks growing louder with every step, along with the sounds of voices and laughter on warm, sunny days. I've always loved water, especially running water, and one of the best parts of Gooseberry is that it is really three waterfalls in one, with the water pouring down each rocky cliff, one after the other, on its way down the river. The river is surrounded by rock — all colors, all shapes, all sizes, some set like stairs to climb as you make your way to the Upper Falls, some smooth and flat and perfect for sitting on, some rising out of the river itself like stepping stones allowing the courageous to cross from one side to the other in search of new paths. And edging the stone are thousands of trees, with paths running through them, like so many veins, carrying air, light, animals, and people deeper into the woods, and back again. And then, of course, there is the water itself. I recall one year sitting by the edge of the Upper Falls, listening to the water colliding with the rocks and then rushing over and around them, when I noticed something I hadn't before. As Gooseberry River makes its way down the Upper Falls, it doesn't go down all in one rush, but divides and flows around the rocks in the cliff, forming hundreds of mini waterfalls as it goes. I became fascinated with how different they all were, in size, shape, direction, even speed, and I could have spent hours watching them. I took pictures of course, but that hardly does justice to the beauty that can be experienced when you are sitting there, so close you have to raise your voice to be heard over the roar of the water, and can feel the mist off the rocks a few feet away. Moments like this connect me with the presence of God in profound ways, because with stone, dirt, water, trees, sunlight, and air all around, I feel grounded in the Spirit of the one who created it all. Scripture has so many images of nature, starting with the story of creation where God spoke and breathed all things into being, as Miss Alena talked about. The psalms described the created world singing and praising the creator, bringing solace, healing, strength, and rest to all of creation, like we heard in Psalm 23 today. Moses finds sacred space in a burning bush, and removes his sandals so that he can touch the holy ground with his feet. Elijah, when he is exhausted, afraid, and completely empty, is nourished, rested, renewed, and reassured by God in a hidden cave on a hill, far from the city he'd fled. And so many stories tell of God speaking to creation and even controlling it, as when he parts the Red Sea for the Israelites, and brings water from stone for them to drink. And in the gospels, Jesus often teaches in fields, and mountains, and gardens, and even from boats, and uses images of grain, water, and trees, among other things, to explain the kin-dom of God to those who follow him. And he also reveals creation responding to the creator in stories like the calming of the storm. Today, Jesus describes God's connection to God's people using the image of a shepherd, guiding and caring for us, the sheep. One thing evident in all of these stories, and all of our own experiences in God's creation, is a theme of connection of God to nature, and connection to God through nature. In our gospel today, Jesus tells us that just as the shepherd knows the sheep, he knows us, and we know him. He knows our voice, and we know his voice, just as Mary knew Jesus' voice when he said her name in the garden outside the tomb. The truth of this knowing is revealed in the world around us. Anyone who has seen the documentary “March of the Penguins,” narrated by Morgan Freeman, may have been struck, as I was, by the description of young penguins hatched while their mothers are on a months-long journey to bring food to their families, who nevertheless know one another's calls and can find each other out of hundreds of penguins despite never having heard each other's voices before. Jesus knows us, and we know Jesus, out of all the millions of people on earth. This feels especially profound this week as the verdict for Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd was rendered, and as I reflected afterwards that George's cry to his mother was heard. This time, in this moment, justice was served. There is still so much evil and brokenness and sin in this world, so much healing to happen, as we wait for justice to roll down like waters. Reverend Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, in her book Stand Your Ground, describes how black theology speaks to this lived reality: God is by nature free, transcendent of all the brokenness and sin of this world. And, God's work in us and in the world is about freedom. Freedom to be who we are as children of God. This, Douglas says, is what gives people who are not yet truly free the courage and endurance to proclaim boldly that wherever people are in bondage, oppressed and marginalized, God is there, and hears their voices just as surely as God heard the cry of the Israelites in Egypt. God heard George Floyd's cry, and the cries of all who suffer. Our second reading, from 1 John, speaks of this boldness, promising that in this beautiful and broken world of now-and-not-yet, God cannot help but be faithful to who God is. And we cannot help, being created by God, to continue the work of transformation, justice, and shalom. We don't often think much about sheep and shepherds, but when we do, if you are like me you probably envision fluffy white cuteness, wandering beautiful countryside, with a shepherd dressed in pristine, flowing robes to follow them. Reality is much different from that — sheep are dirty and smelly, they get lost sometimes, and there are so many dangers that threaten that the shepherd must guard against, sometimes taking the brunt of the damage on themselves in the process. In Psalm 23, the shepherd leads us beside still waters, providing rest and renewal, but also guides the sheep through the inevitable valley of the shadow, walking with them no matter what is happening. In a world where finding leaders that we can truly count on, leaders that know us and hear our voice, can seem nearly impossible, Jesus the good shepherd is a leader we can trust. We who were created, shaped, and formed in the image of the God of freedom follow Jesus the shepherd, and we're reminded with every step that we are intimately connected with the created world around us. Grounded in the created world of earth, trees, animals, birds, air, sun and moon, we're renewed and reminded that no matter what happens, we always know God, and God always knows us. We can stand against evil, knowing that we can trust the shepherd, who has never failed us yet. Guided by the shepherd, we can face the valley of the shadow, the brokenness and evil of this world and even our own sin, and boldly claim that the God of freedom, creativity, and life means for all of creation to be free, even if we are not there yet. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Acts 4:5-12, Psalm 23, 1 John 3:16-24, John 10:11-18, Alena Horn

You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown. Creative Vision Dreams are essential both in your sleep at night and for your future vision. Dreams help you to imagine that which may be far off. Dreams are like looking through a telescope to see your final destination in various areas of your life. Like you cannot navigate with a telescope, you need goals and plans that will enable you to have a creative vision of how you will reach your destination. As you proceed towards your final vision during your trek of life, you will run into many obstacles and setbacks on your way. You will experience many unfamiliar and unknown situations which will take you out of your comfort zone into situations you would prefer to avoid. Going through these times will help you to appreciate your waypoints and destination even more. Allow you minds, hearts, and soul to learn and grow during those difficult times. If your vision is solid and creative enough, it will be worth the journey. Make sure you enjoy the journey and not just yearn for the destination.  God ultimately knows what we will face in our journey of life, and we can rest in the fact that He will be there with us and guide us. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%2029%3A11&version=NLT (Jeremiah 29:11) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Turning Dreams Into Reality Most of us are dreamers, and we like the dreams we envision for ourselves. So, naturally, we desire our dreams to come true, but they do become a reality through magic. For dreams to become true, we must be willing to invest what it takes for that to happen. There is no magic or secret formula. I will give you the recipe for turning dreams into reality. It takes equal measurements of sweat, determination, and hard work. Mix these ingredients vigorously for a long time, and it will harden your resolve to achieve that which you dream. There are no easy paths to the success that we desire in any area of life. Hard work is a gift from God, one that we must choose to enjoy because work is from God. Don't delude yourself into thinking that dreams will magically become a reality. Follow the precepts found in God's Word. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2013%3A11&version=NLT (Proverbs 13:11) Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2028%3A19&version=NLT (Proverbs 28:19) A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in poverty. Welcome to Day 1664 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Cowboys Guide To Life – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1664 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Barefoot the Cowboy, and it is: I have 15 bits of wisdom which will help you in life a heaping amount. A Cowboys Guide To Life Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance. The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror every morning. Never ask a barber if you need a haircut. If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around. Don't worry about bitin off more'n you can chew, your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think. Generally, you ain't learnin' nothin' when your mouth's a-jawin'. If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket. Never miss a good chance to shut up. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes%2012%3A11&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 12:11) The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful. Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd drives the sheep. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Gibson, and it is: A Christian is a keyhole through which other folks see God. The Keyhole To God Do others see God in you? There is no way that we as fallen humans can do justice to God's magnificence, but does your life show a tiny glimpse of God? After all, we are created to be God's imagers. To show forth His attributes and character traits. I know, most of the time, we are a poor reflection of who God really is, but your life should show enough light that others can see God through you. Think about a time when you were a child, or maybe even as an adult where you looked through a keyhole to get a tiny view of what lies beyond a closed door. If the next room did not have a light shining in it, you would see nothing.  If there were an obstacle is blocking the keyhole, you would not be able to see into the next room. Yes, your perspective would be governed by the small part of the room that you could actually see.  So it is with us; if others are looking through the keyhole, represented through our lives, they should know the radiance of God through us. Let the light of God shine for all to see through the keyhole, which is our lives. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+13%3A11-13&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 13:11-13) When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.  Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. A Pencil And A Dream We tend to overcomplicate our lives at times. We feel that we have to have all the details worked out and detailed plans created to accomplish our goals and objectives. We feel we need sophisticated planners or software not to miss the opportunities that may come our way. While there is nothing inherently wrong with planning and achieving all that you can, we need to be cautious. What we need to do is to pause, take a breath, and think of how we can un-complicate our lives. While software and planners may be tools that can help us, they are not a necessity. As with so many things in our lives, which we perceive as needs, they are just desires that may cause us more stress and complicate our lives. The saying, “the more you own, the more those same possessions own you,” is so true. What if we took a minimalistic view our of lives and pursued simplicity? We can do so much with so little. A #2 pencil and your dreams can be a start that can take you anywhere you desire. Just sketch it out with the mindset that an enjoyable life is lived with simplicity and freedom.  Yes, use your God-given talents and abilities to do your best and bring honor to His name. As you do so, though, keep in mind that God does not desire to create stress and havoc in your life. He came to give us a rich and satisfying life. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%2029%3A11&version=NLT (Jeremiah 29:11) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1594 of our Trek, and it's time for your daily snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Maximus, and it is:   What we do in life, echoes in eternity.      Echoes In Eternity I have emphasized this point several times on our podcast. What we do every day does matter. Not only does it matter for that day, but it ripples throughout all eternity. Think about it in this manner. If you were able to throw a one-ton boulder into a lake, it would send large ripples cascading out from the point of impact. So a huge boulder will have a huge impact. In the same manner, though, if you toss a pebble into the same lake, it too will send ripples out from the point of impact. The ripples won't be as evident with the pebble compared to the boulder, but they will impact the lake in the same manner. So it is with our lives. Most days, our impact will be like the pebble, and it will not be as noticeable, but it will still have an impact. There will be a few times in our life, where our lives will be like the boulder, and the ripples throughout eternity will be much more noticeable. Let's think of this analogy from a different angle. Let's say that you picked up one pebble every hour each day of your life and put it into this huge container. If you lived until you were 90, you would have gathered up 788,400 pebbles during your life. Now let's take the huge container the throw it into the lake. The ripples that it would send out would be huge waves that would stretch out for a very long time. The same thing happens in our lives. Just think about the impact that your grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and siblings have had on your life. Think about the impact that you are having on your children, grandchildren, and anyone else you meet during your life. That impact both on you and from you not only has an immediate impact, but that impact truly echos throughout all of eternity. Each one of us is a bearer of God's image. Your life is important. Important to God, and to every one that you impact throughout your entire life. Let your life be an echo for good throughout eternity. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes%203%3A11&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 3:11) Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah%2043%3A13&version=NLT (Isaiah 43:13) “From eternity to eternity, I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. No one can undo what I have done.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Welcome to Day 1521 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.I am Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomThe Unseen Realm: God and the gods – Worldview WednesdayWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. Today is Day 1521 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, we will expand on the past course work as we continue reviewing the book from Dr. Michael S Heiser titled “Supernatural.” The book is an abbreviated version of his more comprehensive book, “The Unseen Realm.” I highly recommend one or both of these books. Creating a Biblical Worldview based on how the Old and New Testaments connect with God's overall plan for humanity is essential. This book review will help us understand what the Bible teaches about the unseen world, and why it matters. The Unseen Realm: God and the Gods People are fascinated by the supernatural and the superhuman. Just think about the entertainment industry in recent years. Thousands of books, television shows, and movies have been about angels, aliens, monsters, demons, ghosts, witches, magic, vampires, werewolves, and superheroes in the past decade. Many of Hollywood's blockbuster franchises feature the supernatural: the X-Men, the Avengers, the Harry Potter series, Superman, and the Twilight saga. Television shows like Fringe and, of course, Supernatural and X-Files have dedicated followings even long after filming new episodes end. Haven't these things always been popular—in tales, in books, in art? Why? One answer is that they're an escape from the ordinary. They offer us a world that's more interesting and exciting than our own. There's something about good versus evil, magnified on a cosmic scale, that thrills us. The epic struggle by the heroes of Middle Earth (Gandalf, Frodo, and company) against the Dark Lord Sauron in The Lord of the Rings trilogy has captivated readers (and now movie-goers) for over a half-century now. The more otherworldly the villain, the more spectacular the triumph. On another level, people are drawn to other worlds because, as the book of https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes+3%3A11&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 3:11) puts it, Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end.  There's something about the human condition that longs for something beyond human experience—something divine. The apostle Paul wrote about this yearning too. He taught that it comes from just being alive in the world God has made. The creation bears witness to a creator, and therefore to a realm beyond our own (Roman 1:18–23). In verse 18, Paul said the impulse to know more about God was so powerful that the wicked willfully suppressed that knowledge. Yet we don't seem to think of the epic story of the Bible in the same way we think of our own tales of the supernatural in books, movies, and legend. There are reasons for that, and they go beyond the lack of special effects. For some, the Bible's characters are too ordinary or grandfatherly. They don't feel dynamic or heroic. After all, these are the same people and the same stories we've heard since Sunday school as kids. Then there's the cultural barrier. It's hard for us to identify with what seems like an endless parade of ancient shepherds and men

The Amazing Grace of GodTitus 2:11-15 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus%202%3A11-15&version=NIV11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” toungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this presentage, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”Bottom Line for this message” Grace has a Face”Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.1. First, the use of the word “for” connects this verse to the previous verses. Because we are therecipients of God's grace and salvation, we should reflect the values and engage the behaviorsthat Paul promoted in verses 2-10.Paul previously discussed preaching, leadership and teaching, all of which is important to the Christianlifestyle (making disciples who make disciples), but what God does in verse 11 can be summed up in onework: GRACE2. What is grace?1. Many say “unmerited favor” or “God's favorable attitude towards us”, but these definitionsare too abstract relative to this verse. Websters has several definitions, but Websters doesn'tdefine Grace for us, God does. The grace of God is an ACTION, not an ABSTRACTION. It's a PERSON, not a CONCEPT.1. Grace is an actual event in space and time. Grace has a face – Jesus ChristScarred, bloody and in agonyA face of the person that suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mineA face of grace- bringing salvation to all people3. Grace isn't cheap…it comes at such a great cost, but our modern theology sometimesattempts to cheapen it by offering people what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”:Cheap grace is: the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentanceBaptism without church disciplineCommunion without repentanceAbsolution without personal confessionOne thing that I believe has made Grace appear cheaper is the modern American church.- Modern American church grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are. The coffee's on us, sitback and relax…and don't worry about changing. We couldn't ask you to do that. We don't wantto offend you.”- Grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are and be prepared and willing for God to changeyou. Because when you recognize the true cost of grace, you recognize that it is a debt that youcannot pay, and you are compelled to change…out of gratitude. You will have to die to yourself.Be prepared to sacrifice parts of your sinful lifelstyle that the world accepts, and says it's OK, butGod doesn't.”Galatians 5:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+5%3A24&version=NIV24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Grace says “I created man and woman”. Modern American grace says “it's all good…whatever you wantto be. God probably made a mistake” in an effort to avoid looking intolerant.God says “I created marriage between a man and a woman”. Modern American grace says “it's allgood…marry who you want. Who are we to judge? Besides, our numbers are low”.God says “I knit babies together in their mother's wombs”. Modern American grace says “It's a woman'sbody and she has right to choose”. Who are we to judge?Bonnhoeffer went on to say:“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. Itis the pearl of great price to buy for which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule ofChrist, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of JesusChrist at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.”“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It iscostly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because itcost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheapfor us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, butdelivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipIt's not popular to say that Jesus is the only way to God. Modern culture and theologies…even some inthe Christian Church…see this as too narrow and restrictive, intolerant and unloving. But to say there aremany ways, makes no sense, and stands in the face of the sacrifice of true Grace.God would not have sent His only Son to die on a cross if He could have saved us by any other means. No Grace would mean no salvation. If there were a bunch of ways to get to heaven, then why did Christdie? When Jesus was praying in Luke 22:42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A42&version=NIV"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."Basically asking…if there's any other way. God didn't say, “well, actually there are a thousand ways, butI'm going to make you go through this anyway”. Just No.Grace has a Face. The face of JesusGalatians 2:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A21&version=NIV21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died fornothing!”Back to Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all peopleWhat is salvation? While sometimes in the Bible, salvation is being saved from one's enemies, in the New Testament, itrefers more to end of time events…God's judgement. Salvation, in this sense, is being saved from God'sperfect judgement…through His perfect GRACE- Grace makes all people savable – every sin of every person has it's answer in Jesus.- “Every person who ends up in hell steps over a blood-stained cross with their name on it to getthere”Grace has a Face…the face of Jesus. The face of salvation.1. Grace TRAINS us. (verse 12)12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright andgodly lives in this present age,1. Grace doesn't flatter us…it teaches us…it trains us-It doesn't tell us all is well, but speaks bluntly, directly and lovingly-for our own good.Titus 2:12 puts an end, once and for all to any theology that separates salvation from the demands ofobedience to Jesus Christ.-Grace teaches us that our lifestyle is suicidal…not in a worldly way, but in an eternalway.-Grace teaches us what we need to do, and what not to do in order to change.-Grace educates us, trains us and to reform and transform. God expects us to go in anew direction when we experience His Grace…His Son…His salvation. If you have you accepted His Grace…His son, and have not been changed, maybe you didn't.-Grace trains us to live better lives according to God's standards and priorities and notour own.-Our works become the natural response to HIS works- Grace teaches us to live a certain kind of life, to live in a particular way, and defined byparticular character qualities.1. Develop self-control2. Live uprightly3. Live Godly lives…for NOW, not for some other place and time, but for here and now. What does that training look like?1. Sometimes it looks like Divine discipline – sometimes it's difficult circumstances.Hebrews 12:7-11 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A7-11&version=NIV7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplinedby their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are notlegitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers whodisciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father ofspirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for ourgood, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained byit.- If you feel that the circumstances of life are stretching you beyond what you think you canbear, or beyond what you want to bear, it may well be the Grace of God training you.Like a serious workout at the gym…it hurts, and isn't pleasant at the time. But if werecognize it as Grace and embrace it for what it is, then it will have that amazingstrengthening, fruit-producing effect.Embrace it…embrace the training of GraceHOW?1. Training requires some degree of cooperation or response on our part.Anyone who has been to the gym or worked with a trainer understands that you can't just showup for training and watch the trainer do all the work and somehow benefit from it. You have toactively engage and actively participate if you expect to be changed by it.2. We have to deny ourselvesThe first step is self-denial.You can't train for a marathon without first denying various habits and behaviors in your lifethat would get in the way of you preparing for the race….like diet and lots and lots of running.Training in grace is like training for a marathon- you have to say NO to several things as a firststep, in this case: 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passionsUnGodliness – Whatever actions or attitudes undermine God's centrality in your life (Ifit makes God marginal, it is ungodly)…like cheap American Christian Church Grace.Godliness is having a regard for God's glory and God's will in every aspect of our lives, doing everything out of reverence and love for Him.Worldly Passions – The result of a hungry soul that doesn't have God at the center.Anything that steals your focus away from God…like maybe politics?Saying NO is not a one-time thing. It's an ongoing part of training. We're called to take up our cross, the cross of self-denial every day.Count the cost of what training will require.Luke 14:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+14%3A28&version=NIV28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see ifyou have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it,everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'2. Grace is POWERFUL-Just as God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage, so too the Son of God redeems, withgreat power, a new covenant people from bondage to lawlessness and sin. Only the Grace of God,through the death of His Son can redeem from lawlessness, can liberate from sin and can set the captivesoul free. Nothing else will…nothing else can.Jesus described the reason for His coming in this way:Mark 10:45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A45&version=NIV45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Paul described it this way…2 Corinthians 5:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin [a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness ofGodGrace has the power to conform us into the righteousness of God2. Grace teaches us to WAIT for what we hope for…to wait expectantly for His coming13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist,-Waiting sometimes seems passive, like we are not doing anything, but Biblically speaking, waiting is notpassive…it's ACTIVE- Waiting in this sense draws us forward into action, rather than causing us to relax- Like a bridegroom waiting for his bride, there's nothing passive about waiting if the focus ofyour wait is your primary desire. It's important to realize that there is a profound difference between passive waiting and active waiting.Passive waiting can take the form of cynicism, complaining, or simply doing nothing.Active waiting, however, is a posture that seeks to cultivate habits that are focused on intentionalpreparation. It is a blessed hope because unlike every other hope we might have, it cannot be disappointed….Jesus iscoming back.We are waiting for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.Are you waiting on the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior? If you are excitedly waitingfor Jesus to come, your waiting looks like preparation. Your preparation looks like fruit. If you're notprepared, and not bearing fruit, then what are you waiting for??(Grace is Powerful) (Grace teaches us to actively wait)2. Grace is PURIFYING14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that arehis very own, eager to do what is good.-It cleanses, washes and renews: The death of Christ cleanses us-It purifies our hearts by faith and our lives by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 25:4 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+25%3A4&version=NIVRemove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; The Refiner's fire is purifying: When precious metals are refined the impurities (dross) must first beremoved. These pollutants are burned away as the metals are subjected to intense heat. As a result ofthe refining process the craftsman is given pure silver to work with as he crafts the metal into a beautifulmasterpiece. Without first removing the dross, the precious metal would be unworkable. Thesilversmith knows when the silver is pure because he can see his reflection in it.Have we allowed God to purify us through His grace? Can He see His reflection in our lives?3. Grace is POSSESIVEVerse 14 …to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.-Kind of paradoxical – even though grace is incredibly generous, it is also tremendouslypossessive…even jealous. He PURCHASED us. To PURIFY us to POSSESS us…literally for Himself.…a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.1 Peter 2:9-10 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9-10&version=NIV9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you maydeclare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were nota people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you havereceived mercy.-When Grace comes into your life, it takes over…it buys you and makes you its own. That's avery good thing…that's SALVATION.-When you encounter the Grace of God…the cross of Christ, you are no longer your own, but Hisown possession. Grace is possessive because it is costly. It cost God the life of His only Son.1 Corinthians 6:19-20https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19-20&version=NIV19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you havereceived from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with yourbodies.Grace appeared at the climax of history through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but Grace isalways there for us in the continual self-giving of the Son, like a steady, never-ending stream.-Have you embraced Grace, and all He provides and requires?-Am I now living a life defined by Grace? - You will know by the fruit.- God's Grace appears in verse 11, and God's glory appears in verse 13. The grace that has appearedspeaks of His first coming, and the Glory that will appear speaks of His second coming.4. God's Grace teaches us who is LordGod's Grace teaches us what we should learn15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”1. Learn doctrine…these are the things you should teach – refers to the entire letter-a letter filled withsound teaching2. Learn duty…encourage with authority. Go alongside and challenge in the way we should all live as welook for “the blessed hope”.3. Learn discernment: if “encourage” speaks to us about the way we should go, “rebuke” admonishes usconcerning the way we should NOT go. When we confront or correct, we do so with all authority. Wedon't compromise…Grace cost too much to compromise.4. Learn dedication: Speaking the truth will not always be popular, but it will always be necessary. It willrequire courage, conviction, the confidence of Christ – and will always require love as it's foundation. This will enable you to humbly stand tall, refusing to be intimidated by Christ's opponents. In this, youwill not let anyone disregard or despise you.Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Be above reproach and love them. (Like Paul and Timothy)Recap1. Grace isn't cheap. Don't treat it cheaply and don't represent it as cheap. That's false teaching.Grace Christian Fellowship –the sign says: “Love God, Love People”. We love God, and we lovepeople because we so strongly desire to show people the true Grace of God through Jesus Christ. That tells peoplethe message is more important than the brand…that love is more important than a logo…that the objective is more important than opticsthat it's better to be a hospital for the lost, than a country club for the savedthat Grace itself is precious…that time here is short, but eternity isn't…that conviction is more important than comfortwe can't say “we're good”, when we know we're all badGrace is costly. Grace is Honest. And Grace is redemptivebut at the same time, any of this done without love is worthless2. Let Grace train you…like a marathon. Training can hurt, but understanding what you're training forputs everything in perspective.3. Put away anything in your life that doesn't bear fruit for God's kingdom, and keep Him as your mainfocus.4. Know His word and teach it with authority.5. Stand tall, confidently and passionately love God and love people. Our hearts should well up with praise in response to the Grace of God.Grace has a Face and He truly is amazing.

Welcome to Day 1492 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomMy Job Resume – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1492 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: My Job Resume Little Joey was over at his favorite Uncle Louey's apartment visiting for an afternoon, and they were chatting as they often did. Now, Uncle Louey wasn't noted for being able to hold down a job very long, and he always had some story to tell. That is probably why little Joey liked visiting him so often. As Joey and Louey were chatting about adventures and going fishing, Joey looked at him and said, “my mama says you can never keep a job. Uncle Loey, why is that?” Uncle Louey agreed and stared off into the air for a bit and then said, “well, let me explain the reasons.” My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned... couldn't concentrate. Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the ax. After that, I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it...mainly because it was a so-so job. Next, I tried working in a muffler factory, but that was too exhausting. I tried to be a barber, but I just couldn't cut it. Then I tried to be a chef -- figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn't have the thyme. I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard. My best job was being a musician, but eventually, I found I wasn't noteworthy. I studied for a long time to become a doctor, but I didn't have any patience. Next was a job in a shoe factory - I tried, but I just didn't fit in. I became a professional fisherman but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income. I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining. I got a job at a zoo feeding giraffes, but I was fired because I wasn't up to it. So then I got a job in a workout center, but they said I wasn't fit for the job. After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it. My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind. So, then I retired...and found out I was perfect for the job! I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “Success seems to be connected to action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they never quit.” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2013%3A11&version=NLT (Proverbs 13:11) Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly...

We’ve all been there. We’ve made what we think are perfect plans just to have them seemingly dismantled. Or something unexpected happens, and it feels like life is turned upside down. Often in those times we have big questions and open answers. Today, let’s talk about finding peace in the midst of uncertainty. Notes and Quotes:  Sometimes we get very transactional with God “‘If I do it right, then I will be rewarded with this.’ But does God work that way? No.”  When we get into tidal wave situations, no matter what they are, God helps us and comforts us.  When you feel overwhelmed or let down, try this: stop, look back at the things God has done for you, recount them all, write them down. Sit with God and reflect on how faithful He has been to you.  Find a tangible reminder to go and pray and express your trust in God to provide. He is faithful. “When we have no control over anything, He has control.” Spiritual amnesia: we forget that God is faithful. “Remove and move any distractions that would distract me from Him.” “Instead of worrying, I was anticipating . . . okay God, where are you going to land me?” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Share the love by giving this episode a 5-star rating on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Free eBooklet Download: It's Not Fair. https://discoveryseries.org/courses/its-not-fair/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  Jeremiah 29:11 NIV.  "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah+29%3A11&version=NIV Phillipians 4:6-7 NIV. This is Day 1470 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Helena Rubinstein, and it is:    I believe in hard work. It keeps the wrinkles out of the mind and spirit.        Hard WorkAs I have mentioned in previous episodes, I grew up on an apple orchard and small farm. There were 12 of us living in an old farmhouse with one bathroom. We didn't have much materially and would be considered poor by most modern standards. In spite of that, for the most part, we grew up happy and did not realize that we were poor. My parents taught my nine siblings and me how to love each other, even when you don't feel like it. We learned how to love others, even when they did not deserve it. We also learned how to work hard in order to survive. You know what? I am so happy that I was able to experience all of that growing up. I do believe in working hard, and not being a victim in life. I never use my childhood as an excuse not to do my very best. As Helena said in our quote for today, hard work has and continues to keep me young. Hard work, indeed, does keep the wrinkles out of my mind and spirit. It allows me to be young of mind and spirit to continue on when others choose to quit.  So work hard. Choose to enjoy what you do and be satisfied with the results.  Hard work rarely, if ever, causes you harm, or will kill you.  Enjoy the journey. The book of Proverbs has several lessons on hard work. Here is one of them. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2021%3A5&version=NLT (Proverbs 21:5) Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. We are also encouraged in: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2012%3A11&version=NLT (Romans 12:11) Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Although Sam was late, he figured maybe the previews were still playing, so he goes in to watch the movie that has already started. He sat there for several minutes, allowing his eyes to adjust to the darkness and immediately became engrossed in the movie. After a few minutes, he was surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead of him. Sam noticed that the dog was actually intently watching the movie. The dog even seemed to be enjoying the movie: he was wagging its tail in the happy parts of the movie, drooping its ears at the sad parts, and hiding his eyes with its paws at the scary parts. Sam was so intrigued that it was getting hard to pay attention to the movie. After the movie, Sam approached the dog's owner and exclaimed, “Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I'm amazed!” The owner looked at Sam with a proud look on his face and said, “Yes, I can't believe it myself. He hated the book.”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. The guys answer, "No", not in the way that Ken implies. AiG and other large creation groups occasionally weigh into territory that by policy they typically avoid when now and then they obliquely promote a particular denominational or otherwise specific theological perspective. So Bob and Fred ask listeners for patience and grace as the guys directly respond to the theological implications brought up, whether intentionally or not, by the beloved founder of AiG. Stuff's easy to fake* RSR on Ancient Giants: As with the claim that a Photoshopped image actually depicts a civil-war era pterosaur photograph, Photoshoppers, intentionally or not, have deceived many who hope to find archaeological evidence of ancient giants, also known as the nephilim, etc. Ironically, well-intentioned Christians who offer erroneous evidence for the Bible end up hurting the cause of the Gospel. The giants described in the Bible are real, and therefore they are physiologically possible. Those who promote as real the Photoshopped images of oversized giants can learn a lesson from the paleontologists. First, they realized they had overcounted the number of dinosaur species by double (so 500 dino species went poof) and then the paleontologists realized that the ones that remained lost weight, big time! For example, instead of Brachiosaurus weighing 80 tons, it is now carefully calculated to have weighed about 23 tons. (Not only did this make allomotrists happier, but reducing the numbers and weight of dinosaur kinds also reduces the demand on Noah's family and ark, even though of course they brought juvenile creatures onto the ark!) As to overweight dinosaurs and oversized giants, God's design of actual creatures is not only brilliant but omnicompetent. It's not, however, science fiction. It's not cartoonish. There's also strong evidence for quantum biology, that God designed organisms to utilize the currently incomprehensible features of quantum mechanics. What God's designs do not do however, is violate the laws of physics. He designed reptiles, which grew no where near the size the larger dinosaurs, with their legs extending outward from their bodies, before they descend downward to the ground. That design, perfect for reptiles, would greatly limit the size and mass of dinosaurs, since horizontally-inclined legs would quickly fail as the animal's weight exceeded the carrying load. So God designed dinosaur legs to extend directly downward from beneath their bodies. This enables the larger kinds, such as the biblical behemoth, discovered only in 2014 and named dreadnoughtus, to gain weight till it's 65 tons, much heavier than a Boeing 737 airliner. The giants in man's ancient past described in the Bible were living, breathing, biological organisms. Therefore, they did not defy the laws of physics. Because they stood on two feet they could not be arbitrarily large. For example, cedar trees will grow to 200 feet tall (five telephone poles) and even to 230 feet! So that's quite the wild range for the imagination to run with to propose super-tall giants who could even lift average pyramid stones weighing 5,000 pounds. Hearing a Bible verse like Amos 2:9 read about "the Amorite... whose height was like the height of the cedars", one notices an abrupt cut off before reaching the end of the verse which makes clear that this is an analogy and not a literal comparison. For God says of the Amorites, "I destroyed... his roots beneath." Tolkein derived his word Ents, for the tall and strong Middle-earth tree beings, from the Anglo-Saxon word for giant. But for all that could be said about mankind's actual ancient giants, Ents notwithstanding, they did not have roots. So we can see that passages such as Amos 2:9 are not giving a literal but a metaphorical description. Other Bible passages that some of those obsessed with giants insist are literal are those that describe the Israelites as "grasshoppers" before the giants of Canaan. "There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight" (Ex. 13:33). However God uses the same metaphor in Isaiah 40:22 saying of the earth that "its inhabitants are like grasshoppers." A simile is a comparison using like or as and these verses, as overtly obvious except to those with an extreme bias, are figures of speech. Regardless though, modern "giants" who have amazed and sometimes entertained the masses top out at nearly nine feet tall and compared to these tallest modern humans, people have often described the comparison in terms not unlike the biblical figures of speech. Moses in Scripture provides an actual length measurement which can be used to estimate the height of one especially notable giant. "For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not [still] in Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit" (Deut. 3:11). So this 13.5-foot bed would make Og, leaving six inches headroom and perhaps two feet at the foot of the bed, a stunning 11 feet tall! Og would make Robert Wadlow of Alton, Illinois, the tallest measured human being, at 8.11 inches, look incredibly short in comparison! The square-cube law, first described by Galileo, compares an increase in the size of an object with its much faster increase in volume (and typically, in weight and mass). Wadlow, for example, had to walk with a cane and leg braces (which sadly caused the infection that killed him at age 22) because as his height increased, there was far too much weight for his size-proportional growing bones to support. This law gives an exact relationship of size and volume for something as straightforward as a cube. But even for things as complex as biological organisms or machines that increase in size, the law still gives a good first approximation of certain expected physical attributes and a heads up for design requirements for engineers scaling up inventions, and for God when He went from designing mice to elephants, deer to giraffes, and giraffes to Brachiosaurs. Scaling upward in size introduces unavoidable physical consequences, including as you actually or theoretically increase the proposed size of a human, or any object, including any biological organism, and that would include the physical bodies of the giants know as the nephilim. If you doubled Wadlow's height from nine feet (times 2) to 18 feet, to get his new weight you would multiply his 440 pounds by 8 (2 cubed). At 3,500 pounds his bones would be crushed with every step. So even taking into account that organisms from 6,000 to 3,000 years ago were stronger and fitter than today, and taking into account also the supernatural aspects of the origin of the nephilm, still, they possessed physical bodies. Ancient giants, unlike giraffes and Diplodocus, still walked, as people do, on two feet and two legs. To be much taller than the Bashan's Og, they couldn't have been simply much larger human-looking beings. Physically, to be as enormous as some irresponsibly claim, these giants would have had to be different kinds of beings, not people-looking kinds, for people-looking 20-foot tall giants would be physically impossible, and besides, such creatures are biblically uncalled for. So what about those believers who have invested hundreds of hours or even years studying and believing the Photoshopped giant skeletons are actually real? We urge them to ask God for the courage to study real science, and real evidence for the Scriptures. This shift in their focus could bring them enormous satisfaction and help them to have a greater influence on others, especially on those who so desperately need to hear about our creator and savior Jesus Christ.
