Bible Reading: Mark 4:35-41BOOM! Seven-year-old Carter sat up in bed. Rain spattered against the window, and lightning streaks made his room as bright as day. He could see his favorite teddy bear propped in a corner. BOOM! Another loud crash of thunder. Carter burrowed under his covers, a pillow pressed over his ears. From under the blankets, Carter peeked toward the wall where the rosy glow of a nightlight usually shone, but between flashes of lightning, only blackness filled the room. Cautiously, he poked the button of a little table lamp near his bed, but instead of warm, friendly light, there was nothing. Trembling, he buried himself even deeper in his bed.Rain poured down harder outside, sounding as if someone were hurling tennis balls against the house. Wide awake now, Carter wondered if he dared make a run for his parents' room. Just then he felt a soft touch through his blanket. "Mom?" he asked in a muffled voice."I'm here, honey." Carter looked out from his blanket tent and, as another flash of lightning illuminated the room, saw his mother in her fuzzy green robe standing next to him. Another BOOM shook the house. "Noisy, isn't it?" said Mom. As she sat down on the edge of Carter's bed, the power came back on. With Mom there, and with the familiar light filling the room, Carter no longer felt afraid. "Did you remember that Jesus is right here with you, Carter?" asked Mom. "He was watching over you even before I came in. He controls the wind and rain, you know. We don't have to be afraid because He's with us."Carter began to feel sleepy as he listened to his mother's comforting voice. Her hands closed around his, and he heard her saying, "Thank You, Jesus, for loving Carter and especially for being here with him during the storm." Outside, the storm rumbled farther away while rain dripped quietly from the roof. Through almost-closed eyes, Carter saw his mom turn the light off and tiptoe from his room."Thank You, Jesus," whispered Carter. "I'm so glad You're always here." He yawned, snuggled under his covers, and soon fell asleep. –Phyllis I. KlomparensHow About You?Are you afraid of thunderstorms? Or maybe there's something else that scares you, like meeting new people or being alone in the dark. When you're in a situation that makes you feel scared, remember that Jesus is with you and trust Him to comfort you and help you not be afraid. He loves you so much that He gave His life to save you, and He is always watching over you. Trust Him to take care of you.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus] said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? How to Find Hope When You're Hopeless Genesis 15:1-4 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” 2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” (NIV) Romans 4:18 Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” (NLT) Romans 4:19-21 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. (ESV) Romans 4:20 Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. (NLT) Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (NIV) 1. Focus on Faith not Facts Romans 4:19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. (ESV) Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (NIV) 1 John 5:14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (NIV) Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (NIV) Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (NIV) Psalms 27:13-14 I remain confident of this, I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (NIV) Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (NIV) 2. Focus on how good God is not on how bad you are Romans 4:20-21 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. (ESV) Genesis 15:1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” (NIV) Psalm 141:8 But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death. (NIV) Psalm 25:15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare. (NIV) Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NIV) 3. Focus on what you can do and not on what you can't do

Bible Reading: Luke 12:16-21Malachi put down the wood for the campfire and hurried to see why Boomer, his puppy, was barking. The little dog stood at the edge of the stream, looking down into the clear water. "What is it, Boomer?" asked Malachi. He looked down to see what was in the water and began to laugh."What is Boomer barking at, Malachi?" asked Dad."Himself! He's barking at his own reflection in the water." Malachi shook his head. "Silly dog! Come on, Boomer. I'll get you a treat." The magic word was treat--Boomer immediately left the edge of the water and scurried over to the tent. Soon he had his treat and was stretched out near the stream.Dad smiled as he watched Boomer happily chomp on his treat. "This reminds me of an old fable about a dog and a bone," he said. "As the dog carried his bone across a bridge, he thought he saw another dog in the water below, and he bristled.""That sounds like Boomer, all right!" said Malachi."Yes, and this dog wasn't going to let that other dog get his bone," continued Dad. "So he began to bark to make the other dog go away. I'm sure you can figure out what happened when he opened his mouth to bark."Malachi laughed. "His bone fell into the water, right?""Right, and the greedy dog ended up with nothing." Dad added another log to the campfire. "Greed makes us want to get things and hold on to them at all costs, but in the end we lose everything we had and more. True riches and fulfillment come from Jesus, not from anything we own. Money and possessions don't last, but Jesus offers us a gift that lasts forever--forgiveness for our sins and eternal life with Him. To loosen the grip of greed on our hearts, we need to turn to Jesus and trust Him to provide us with everything we need, including joy and contentment."Just then Boomer ran up, looking for another treat. Malachi smiled and got one out. "Here you go, Boomer," he said, holding it out for Boomer to take from his hand. "But it won't last long, so don't get greedy." –Marilyn J. SenterfittHow About You?Do you think having the right things will bring you happiness? Are you so focused on getting and keeping those things that you don't care about anything or anyone else? Lasting joy doesn't come from having lots of money or cool stuff--it comes from knowing Jesus. Having a relationship with Him brings us true riches that last forever. Bible Reading: Mark 4:1-9; Romans 10:17; Philippians 4:8-9"Sea lion caves," read Graham. He pointed to a sign next to the road along the Oregon coast. "We're there!"Dad nodded and drove into the parking lot. Soon the family stood in the underground viewing area, close enough to see, smell, and hear the roaring creatures. When a torpedo-shaped body with a whiskered, cat-like face slid through the water and clambered up onto the cave floor, Dad took out his phone. "That type of seal is called the Stellar sea lion," he said. "This website says the spots that look like dimples on the side of the seal's head are tiny ears. Most seals just have openings, but the Stellar sea lion is an eared seal. When it dives, those little ear flaps cover the openings, and when it surfaces, the ears open up again.""Wow! That's cool," said Graham. After watching the sea lions for a while, Graham and his family returned to their car and went on their way. As they drove, they talked about the seals. "Why didn't God give me ears that would close?" Graham asked, laughing at the thought of his ears opening and closing. "I'd like to be able to shut some things out that I didn't want to hear.""I thought you could do that already," said Mom, pretending to be surprised. "You never seem to hear me when I tell you to clean your room!" Graham smiled sheepishly. He knew she was teasing, but he suspected she wasn't totally joking either."That's a good point," said Dad. "God didn't give you ear flaps, Graham, but He did give you the ability to open and close your ears in another way. You can open your ears by listening to what's being said and close them by not paying attention. It's important to open your ears to what your parents, teachers, and especially God have to say.""That's right," said Mom. "God often uses parents and teachers to help us understand what He tells us in the Bible--the truth about what Jesus did to save us and how we should live as God's children. We need to open our ears so we can hear and obey." –Bernice S. KarnopHow About You?Have you ever tried to open and close your ears? Though you don't have ear flaps like a sea lion, you can choose to listen to or ignore what others say. When parents and teachers are talking to you, pay attention to their words. Most important of all, open your ears to what God says in the Bible. It tells us how much He loves us and how we can have a relationship with Him--and Christian parents and teachers can help us learn more about Him too.Today's Key Verse:Jesus said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." (NIV) (Mark 4:9)Today's Key Thought:Open your ears to God's truth

Bible Reading: Mark 12:28-31Macy glanced at her brother and made a face as Mrs. Jackson from next door stepped into their yard. Here we go again, she thought. Their neighbor was always mad about something.Mom got up from the porch swing. "Hello," she said in a cheerful voice.Mrs. Jackson harrumphed. "I thought I heard your kids screaming."Mom glanced at Macy and Jace. "Not today.""Well, keep them quiet when it starts to get late like this. I haven't been feeling well and need my sleep," Mrs. Jackson said.Mom's brows knit together. "I'm sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well. Is there anything we can do for you?"Mrs. Jackson shook her head. "Just keep your kids quiet." She turned and marched back to her yard."I hope you feel better," Mom called after her."Why are you so nice to her, Mom?" Macy asked."Yeah," Jace said. "She's only ever grumpy and mean to us."Mom turned toward them. "Sometimes it's when people are acting grumpy and mean that they need love and grace the most.""Love?" Jace wrinkled his nose."She doesn't seem like she's deserving of it all the time, I know. But then again, neither are we." Mom sat on the porch swing between them. "God chose to love us even though we're not perfect. We all make mistakes, right?"Macy thought about how often she fought with her brother, especially when they were playing board games. "Yeah."Mom nodded. "God loves us in spite of our mistakes, and we should show love to others despite how they might treat us too. When we show them love and grace, we're showing them Jesus.""I want to be like Jesus," Macy said.Jace glanced at her. "Even if it means being nice to Mrs. Jackson?""Yeah." Macy sighed. "That's going to be hard."Mom squeezed her hand. "But not impossible. You can trust Jesus to help you love others the way He loves you.""I will," Macy said. She wanted to be loving like Jesus, even if it meant putting up with her cranky neighbor. –Bethany AckerHow About You?Do you know someone who only ever seems to be in a bad mood? Sometimes people who are grumpy or mean act that way because they're hurting. That doesn't excuse their actions, but it can help you remember that they need love too. Bible Reading: Psalm 119:145-149"Where are you guys going for lunch today?" asked Alma. Her sister Carmen's fiancé had arrived, and they were ready to leave."We're going to that little restaurant called Your Special Spot," Joshua replied. "Only we call it Our Special Spot.""You go there a lot, don't you?" asked Alma. "Why do you always go there?""We don't always go there, but it is our favorite place," said Carmen. "It's cozy and quiet--a good place to talk.""We went there on our first date," Joshua said, squeezing Carmen's hand."And that's where Joshua proposed to me," added Carmen. "We love spending time together in our special place."After they left, Alma wandered into the living room. "Carmen and Joshua spend a lot of time together," she murmured to herself. "I guess that must be because they love each other."As she thought about it, Alma remembered the sermon she had heard at church earlier that week. "Jesus loves us and wants to spend time with us," Pastor Grant had said. "When we set aside time to talk with Him and listen to what He says to us in the Bible, it helps our relationship with Him deepen and grow." Alma was trying to do that, but sometimes it was hard to find a place where she could be alone. She shared a room with her younger sister, Leah, and often when she thought about having devotions, Leah was in the room. I know! Alma thought. I need a special place to talk to Jesus, just like Carmen and Joshua have a special place to talk to each other. Where could it be? She decided to ask her mom."That's a great idea!" Mom said after Alma explained what she wanted. "Let's see…I think we could arrange a corner in the basement. You can use that comfortable chair and the little table.""I'll keep my Bible and journal on that shelf under the window," Alma added."You could make a 'Do not disturb' sign for the basement door," Mom suggested. "That way, the rest of the family will know not to bother you."Alma grew more enthusiastic as she arranged her special place for her time with the Lord. -Hazel W. MarettHow About You?Is it hard to find privacy when you want to spend time with the Lord? Jesus experienced that too when He was on earth, so He got up early and went to a quiet spot to pray. If possible, arrange for a special place to meet with Him each day. It can be your own room, a quiet corner in your house or apartment, or even somewhere outside. Find a quiet place to spend time with Jesus, and then meet Him there regularly.Today's Key Verse:Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. My oh my….2022 is ending on a very protest-y note and I am interested in seeing where this all goes! China is entering the protest chat and will their leader Xi Jin Ping step down?!? Will the people realize their power or will the powers that be realize the people put them in office and they will ONLY remain there based on their support harmony and the best for their country? There are actually a lot of questions that are begging answers globally, but it seems like people are getting frustrated waiting for certain answers from power's that be. Also, the seemingly “satanic BDSM” child kerfuffle holiday campaign that Balenciaga released just continues to get worse by the minute, but are they finally taking responsibility for their actions in publishing those images?! Kanye was just walking for Balenciaga at FW 2022/23 in Paris, so I wonder since he has a collection of kids of his own what are his thoughts on the latest Balenciaga production? This podcast EP is where the rubber meets the road & we let our impartial guard down and start speaking my non-FCC regulated truth's. But the real question is who you riding with in the end times God or the devil?!? Sit back, relax and enjoy the show as we observe before our very eyes the crumbling of the “Matrix”! Bible Reading: Mark 4:35-4Lightning flashed and thunder boomed, rattling the house and flooding the living room with flashes of light. Moments later, there was a thud of feet hitting the floor, followed by quick footsteps. Mom looked up from the sofa to see six-year-old Matthew standing outside his bedroom door, his face filled with fear. Mom opened her arms, and Matthew raced into her embrace, burying his head in her arm. "Is the thunder and lightning scaring you?" Mom asked in a quiet voice. Matthew nodded his still-buried head, and his whole body trembled. "You know, Matthew, when I was a little girl, I was afraid of thunderstorms too."Matthew peeked his eyes out from his hiding place. "Really?" he asked in a tiny whisper. "Really," Mom replied. "Do you remember the story from Sunday school about the disciples who were in the boat with Jesus when a horrible storm came upon them?"Matthew looked up at his mother with wide eyes. "Yes, Mommy! The storm was so big, and the disciples were very scared--just like me!" "Do you remember what Jesus was doing in the storm?" Mom asked. Matthew nodded. "He was sleeping because He wasn't afraid. But the disciples were super scared, and so they woke Jesus up! Then Jesus told the storm to stop, and it did!""Do you remember what Jesus said when the disciples woke Him up?" Mom asked. Matthew shook his head, so Mom continued. "He said, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' Matthew, even the wind and waves obey Jesus, because He created them! He is powerful, and He's always with those who trust in Him, just like He was with the disciples. When we feel afraid, we need to have faith that He will take care of us.""I think I'm ready to go back to bed now, Mommy," Matthew said. He reached for his mother's hand and led her down the hallway to his bedroom."Are you sure? The storm isn't finished yet," Mom replied."It's okay. If the disciples didn't need to be afraid in the storm, then I don't need be afraid either." Mother smiled as she tucked Matthew snuggly into his bed. "Good night, Matty-bear.""Good night, Mommy. Good night, Jesus," Matthew whispered and closed his eyes. -Jillian UrsuHow About You?Do you feel afraid when lightning flashes and thunder rumbles? Or maybe it's another kind of storm that's filling you with fear--a life-storm like a parent losing their job or someone you love being sick. Jesus has power over the wind and waves, and He's in control of your situation too. Even when bad things happen, He is with you. When you feel afraid, trust Him to take care of you. Today's Key Verse:[Jesus] got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Bible Reading: Mark 6:30-32"Are we almost there?" Noelle asked. "I can't wait to go swimming!""There it is!" Cameron shouted as the car rounded a bend and the little cottage came into view. Dad parked by the front door, and Noelle and Cameron helped their parents unpack the car. "I'm starving!" declared Cameron when they finished their work."Me too," said Noelle. "When are we going to eat, Mom?""Soon," Mom replied, getting out some sloppy joe meat, chips, and buns. She put the meat in a pan and turned on the burner. Then she plugged in the coffeepot. "How about macaroni and cheese with your sloppy joes?" she asked as she turned on another burner. Immediately, all the lights went off. "Oh no!" exclaimed Mom. "I must have blown a fuse."Dad got up and went to find the fuse box. "Looks like there are too many things on one of the circuits," he said when he came back. "We'll have to turn off a few lights whenever we want to use the stove."Soon their lunch was ready, and they sat down to enjoy it together. "This is fun," said Noelle. "It's our first real vacation in ages." "I know," said Mom. "That overloaded fuse reminds me of our family lately. We've been so busy getting our business started and remodeling the house. Then with piano lessons, soccer practice, and homework, I think we've been overloaded too. We've been so busy that we haven't had much time to spend together."Dad nodded. "Let's evaluate our activities during this vacation and ask God to show us if there are ones we should cut out of our schedules so we have more time to rest and enjoy each other." He reached into his backpack and pulled out a Bible. "We also need time to enjoy being with Jesus too. One way to do that is to spend time praying and reading His Word so He can remind us of His love for us and refresh our souls. Let's do that as a family right now.""That's one thing we should always make time for," said Cameron. "That and soccer practice. But we could skip piano lessons," he added with a grin. "And homework."Dad chuckled. "Sorry," he said. "I don't think that's gonna happen!" -Sherry L. KuytHow About You?Have you been too busy lately? Are there too many activities packed into your schedule? Talk to Jesus about it, and ask Him to show you if some of them can be omitted. Don't allow your schedule to get overloaded. SHOW NOTES: The Sea of Galilee experiences some fierce storms. Jesus witnessed these first-hand as He traveled with His disciples in the Galilee Region. And, we recognize the storms of life are very real! You may be in the middle of a storm now or the next storm may be just around the corner. The Lord has a reason for each trial but we will not be separated from Jesus. He is walking beside us. There are times, in His sovereign will, when He chooses to calm the storm. Imagine His divine words, “Peace, be still” and, the winds and waves obeyed His voice. Take the truth from this storm on the Sea of Galilee and apply it to your circumstance today. Bible Reading: Exodus 20:8; Mark 2:27–3:6Charlotte's family had just finished Sunday dinner at Grandma's. "Charlotte, would you help me with the dishes, please?" asked Grandma, handing Charlotte a dish towel. "I'll wash, you dry! Now, what did you learn in Sunday school today?" "We've been learning about the Ten Commandments, and today was about keeping the Sabbath day holy. Some kids started arguing about what you should or shouldn't do on Sunday. Heather said her family doesn't do any work or chores around the house, but Jason said his dad takes Sunday to do odd jobs he hasn't had time to do during the week. I was a little confused about it all. What do you think, Grandma?"Grandma thought for a moment. "That can be a touchy subject for believers. In fact, people were disagreeing about the Sabbath in Jesus's day. One Sabbath day, Jesus and His disciples were picking some heads of grain because they were hungry. The Pharisees, who had set up strict rules about what you could and couldn't do on the Sabbath, accused Him of breaking the law because He was doing work by picking grain. Another time those same Pharisees were upset that Jesus healed a crippled man on the Sabbath.""You mean Jesus got in trouble?" Charlotte asked in surprise."With the Pharisees, yes! They were more focused on following rules than following Jesus." Grandma rinsed a soapy dish and handed it to Charlotte. "I think God intended the Sabbath to be a time of rest and refreshment from our daily work and routines," Grandma said. "It refreshes us to remember what Jesus did to save us and to worship Him with other Christians. But the Sabbath can look different for different people. Our family likes to spend time doing things together. Some people enjoy hobbies on Sunday, while others just like to take a nap!""Like Grandpa!" Charlotte laughed. "A couple of Sundays ago, Dad helped our neighbor fix his flat tire. Do you think that was okay?""That sounds like Jesus! The Bible tells us Jesus healed people on the Sabbath. He was more concerned about loving others than following the list of rules made by the religious leaders of the day. I think your dad showed Jesus's love to your neighbor and that was his way of keeping the Sabbath holy." -Kendra AngleHow About You?Does your family take a break from the normal routine of work and school on Sundays? Keeping the Sabbath day holy means taking time to honor Jesus by going to church, relaxing with your family, and even helping others. We can rest because we don't have to do anything to earn God's favor--Jesus earned it for us! God made the Sabbath day for our benefit, and each family has a different way of keeping it special. Today's Key Verse:Then [Jesus] said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." (NIV) (Mark 2:27)Today's Key Thought:Honor Jesus on the Sabbath

One of the most fascinating miracles performed by Jesus is recorded in Mark 5:24-30. “A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.' Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?'” (NIV) Mark continues to describe how the woman fell at Jesus' feet and told him the whole truth. I can't imagine the desperation this woman must have felt. She had suffered a long time. But the desperation gave way to hope when she heard about Jesus. As the crowds pressed about Jesus like a mosh pit at a rock concert, she strained and reach out to touch his cloak. Do we see Jesus as the answer to our problems? Are we willing to go against the crowd, to reach, stretch and strain to connect with him? We should. Because he has the power to change our lives! Bible Reading: Matthew 5:13 "Pass the sodium chloride, please," said Jackson. The steam rose from the mixed vegetables as he reached for the bowl."What's sordum cordite?" asked his younger sister, Libby."Sodium chloride. It's the chemical name for salt. I learned it in science class.""You're smart. I can't wait to have science class and be smart," Libby said."Have you ever heard the phrase, 'You are the salt of the earth?'" asked Dad. Libby scooped up some vegetables. "That's silly. How can people be salt?" "It's something Jesus says in the Bible. The rest of the verse says, 'But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.'""Why would people step on salt?" Libby asked. "We walk on salt in the winter," Mom said. "We put it on roads and sidewalks because it melts ice. But that's not what Jesus is talking about--they didn't have snow or ice where He lived. People in His time used salt for other things, and if it could no longer fulfill its purpose, it was thrown away.""What do we use salt for besides melting ice?" asked Dad."I like it on my French fries," said Jackson. He glanced at his mom. She always told him he ate too much salt."Salt is also a preservative--it keeps things from spoiling. Before people had refrigerators or freezers, they covered their meat in salt so they could cook it later," Mom said. "So what do those things have to do with us?" asked Jackson. "How do we stay salty?""Well, just like salt adds flavor to food, Christians flavor the world with love," Dad said. "When we treat others with the kindness and love of Jesus, we point them to His goodness." "We're also part of the church--the body of Christ that's made up of all those who trust in Him," said Mom. "Together we preserve the truth and hope of Jesus in a world that's been spoiled by sin. The church's job is to tell people that Jesus died and rose again to save us and that He's coming again one day. Our purpose is to look forward to what's coming--the eternal kingdom of Jesus!""Amen!" Jackson declared. -Lori HulveyHow About You?Are you a salty Christian? If you know Jesus, you can flavor the lives of others with His goodness and love. You can help spread the good news of what He did to save us. Christians are the salt of the earth, and we need to work together as the body of Christ to point people to Him. How can you and others at your church salt the world around you with the hope and love of Jesus? Today's Key Verse:Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other. (NIV) ( Mark 9:50)Today's Key Thought:Christians are the salt of the earth

Bible Reading: Luke 15:1-10"There! That's finished," said Mom as she closed the refrigerator door. "This Key lime pie will be ready in time for supper.""I love Key lime pie," said Serena. She closed the books she had been using. "I just finished my lesson for Bible club," she said, getting up. "It's about the parables in Luke 15. Mom, how come Jesus talked in parables so much? Why didn't He just say what He meant?""That's a good question," said Mom. "Let's think about it. What do you think the reason might be?""Wellparables are like little stories, and maybe Jesus used them to make the lessonsHe taught more interesting so people would listen better," Serena suggested. "I like stories, and the parables in the Bible are interesting. They illustrate what Jesus was teaching, don't they?""Right," said Mom. "I think they also make Bible truths easier for us to understand. They're a little likewell" She opened the refrigerator. "Here," she said, taking out a lime. "Would you care to eat this,Serena?""That lime?" asked Serena in surprise. "No way! They're too sour.""You're right," said Mom. "It would be too much for your taste buds." Mom took out the pie she had just made. "How about this? Could you eat a slice of Key lime pie?" Serena laughed. "I could definitely eat a slice of that!" Mom nodded. "You can still taste the lime in this pie, but it's much sweeter, isn't it? It's suited for your taste buds so it's not too intense and you can enjoy the flavor of the limes I used to make it." She put the pie back in the fridge to chill. "I think that's kind of what a parable is like--it helps our human minds, which respond to stories, understand the truth of God's Word. Parables are suited to the way God created our brains to learn. Jesus could have told the people God's truth in a more straightforward manner, and sometimes He did. But I think He knew they often listened and learned better from the parables--the little stories He told."Serena smiled. "I'll remember that when I'm eating my slice of Key lime pie tonight!" -Dalan E. DeckerHow About You?Do you enjoy stories and learn from them? The stories Jesus told illustrate truths we all need to know. Did you enjoy the stories He told in today's Bible reading? Did you think about what they mean? Why not go back to Luke 15 and read the rest of the chapter? It contains a longer parable about a son who runs away from his father. Read it, then think about what it teaches about God's love and forgiveness.Today's Key Verse:With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. We've all made bad decisions. Some of those bad decisions come back to haunt us, and some decisions we thought were good at the time end up having nasty consequences. Oftentimes, those moments lead to regret, and many of us struggle to move past our big mistakes. In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Eryn and Elisa revisit a conversation with humorist Liz Curtis Higgs as she shares how we can find freedom from the past and hope for the future.   About our guest:  Liz Curtis Higgs describes herself as a former “bad girl” who met Jesus and is no longer defined by her mistakes. She's a best-selling author and well-known speaker, and she wrote the foreword for the best-selling devotional from Our Daily Bread Ministries titled God Sees Her. Liz currently lives with her husband, Bill, in their Kentucky home.   Notes and Quotes:  “I have no comfort zone. I will tell anybody anything if it will point them to the grace of God.” “They saw past all the ick and said, ‘At the heart, she is a woman that needs to know Jesus,' and so they just loved me right into the kingdom.” “God and His faithfulness waited.” “We all found ways to numb the pain of not being part of the right crowd and created our own crowd.” “For me, I am a girl who likes community, and I wanted that above all.” “When it says in Scripture, ‘He gives you the desires of your heart,' it doesn't mean He gives you every little thing your heart desires; it means He places in your heart the desires He would have for you.” “Some of it He dealt with honestly very quickly. . . . That is what I needed. Everybody is different. Some of us are weaned off the old life, and that doesn't mean that you didn't hear the Lord correctly or you're disobedient.”  “The path for each of us is so unique; the Savior, though, is one and the same.” “We all share a kind of badness, and we all struggle with shame around badness. And my badness may not look like your badness, and yours may not look like mine. Bible Reading: Luke 19:1-10"Hi, Mom!" exclaimed Rylee as she placed her backpack on the kitchen counter. "Hi, Rylee. How was your first day of Bible camp?" Mom asked as she cut carrots and put them in the stew she was making. "It was great! We swam in the lake, went down the small waterslide, and ziplined. After that, we had Bible class.""That sounds like fun!" said Mom. "What did you learn about in Bible class?" "Well," said Rylee, "one of the counselors taught us about a man in the Bible named Zacchaeus, and how Jesus wanted to go to his house to eat even though Zacchaeus had done many bad things. He also talked about how Jesus loves everyone, and that's why we should love others, even our enemies." Rylee frowned. "I don't really understand what that has to do with Zacchaeus though. Anyway, we learned a new Bible verse--Mark 12:31. It goes like this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" "That verse you learned tells us how to love others like God does," Mom explained. "It doesn't say, 'Love your best friend' or 'Only love your family.' The Bible says to love everyone--even our enemies--because Jesus loves each one of us the way He loved Zacchaeus. You see, Zacchaeus was a tax collector who collected money from the citizens for the government. Nobody liked him because in Jesus' day, tax collectors took as much money as they wanted for themselves most of the time. He was a thief in the eyes of the people.""But Jesus forgave him?" asked Rylee.Mom nodded. "Even though Zacchaeus was a sinner, Jesus loved him, and He even wanted to eat lunch at Zacchaeus' house! And even though we've sinned, Jesus loves us and wants to have a relationship with us too. That's why He tells us to show love and compassion to all our neighbors--because He loved us when we were sinners like Zacchaeus." "Wow! I never thought of it that way," Rylee said as she started helping Mom with the celery. "Jesus wanting to eat with Zacchaeus shows how much He loves all of us." She grinned. "Speaking of eating, that stew smells good!" -Evelyn CardricheHow About You?Do you find it hard to love some people? Maybe it's the new kid at school or an older sibling who picks on you. No matter who your neighbors are, remember that Jesus loves everyone--He shows each one of us kindness and compassion even though we've all sinned against Him. Trust Him to help you love others, even when it's hard. Today's Key Verse:Love your neighbor as yourself. (NIV) (Mark 12:31)Today's Key Thought:Love everyone no matter what

When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it's a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What's the difference between a toxic person and someone who's broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it's time to walk away from a toxic person? In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Elisa and Eryn take us through a previous conversation with Gary Thomas who will be leading us in a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people.   About our guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today's show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 35 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.   Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn't always a statement of failure; it's a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here's my voice, here's my mission” . . .  and don't let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you're crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don't want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.”   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary's book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Gary's Instagram: garythomasbooks   Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. Bible Reading: Matthew 11:28-30; Mark 6:30-32"All right, boys. Turn off that video game and help set the table." Ethan hit the pause button. "We should be able to beat that level after dinner," he told Levi as they scooted into the kitchen. Mom was balancing the baby on her hip and stirring a bubbling pot of spaghetti sauce. "Don't forget to put out napkins," she told the boys. "And don't forget we're heading out to do some Christmas shopping after dinner." "We're in the middle of a video game, Mom," Levi said. "You've been playing that game for over an hour. It's time to take a break. We need to get presents for your cousins, pick up ingredients for Christmas cookies, and buy some extra Christmas tree lights.""Can't we go shopping tomorrow?" Ethan asked. Mom shook her head. "We have rehearsal for the Christmas play tomorrow."Dad walked into the kitchen and pulled a strand of spaghetti from the pot. Mom turned and handed him the baby. "You seem really stressed out," Dad told her. He turned to the boys. "I've got an idea." "Does it involve video games?" Levi asked."It does not involve video games, but it does involve hot chocolate. I'm going to make a batch of hot chocolate, and we're going to sit down as a family and watch a Christmas movie." Dad already knew what Mom was thinking. "Don't worry, honey. I'll get up early and take care of all the shopping. It sounds like everyone needs a little break from the craziness of the Christmas holiday. Think of it as a Santa pause." Everyone laughed, even Mom."I guess you're right," she said. "Even Jesus and His disciples needed some time to rest. If I remember the Bible story correctly, Jesus told his disciples to come with Him to a quiet place and rest because so many people were coming and going that they didn't even have time to eat.""No time to eat!" Ethan said. "There's not a crowd big enough or even a video game that could keep me from your spaghetti, Mom!""I'm glad to hear it," Mom said. "But we still need to take time to rest and remember the real reason we celebrate Christmas--Jesus coming to save us." Jared HottensteinHow About You?Do you need some time to rest? Sometimes life can get very busy, especially around the holidays. We're busy doing a lot of really good things, but there's nothing wrong with hitting the pause button and taking a break. Jesus knew what it was like to be tired. If He took some time to rest, so should we. Take a breather and spend some time with Him. After all, He's the real reason we celebrate Christmas.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus] said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." We’ve all made bad decisions. Some of those bad decisions come back to haunt us, and some decisions we thought were good at the time end up having nasty consequences. Oftentimes, those moments lead to regret, and many of us struggle to move past our big mistakes. Humorist Liz Curtis Higgs joins Elisa and Eryn to share how we can find freedom from the past and hope for the future.  Bio of guest:  Liz Curtis Higgs describes herself as a former “bad girl” who met Jesus and is no longer defined by her mistakes. She’s a best-selling author and well-known speaker, and she wrote the foreword for the best-selling devotional from Our Daily Bread Ministries titled God Sees Her. Liz currently lives with her husband, Bill, in their Kentucky home. Notes and Quotes:  “I have no comfort zone. I will tell anybody anything if it will point them to the grace of God.” “They saw past all the ick and said, ‘At the heart, she is a woman that needs to know Jesus,’ and so they just loved me right into the kingdom.” “God and His faithfulness waited.” “We all found ways to numb the pain of not being part of the right crowd and created our own crowd.” “For me, I am a girl who likes community, and I wanted that above all.” “When it says in Scripture, ‘He gives you the desires of your heart,’ it doesn’t mean He gives you every little thing your heart desires; it means He places in your heart the desires He would have for you.” “Some of it He dealt with honestly very quickly. . . . That is what I needed. Everybody is different. Some of us are weaned off the old life, and that doesn’t mean that you didn’t hear the Lord correctly or you’re disobedient.”  “The path for each of us is so unique; the Savior, though, is one and the same.” “We all share a kind of badness, and we all struggle with shame around badness. And my badness may not look like your badness, and yours may not look like mine. But we share it; and if we could just love each other in our badness and accept and not judge . . . wow, what a world that could be.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Free eBooklet to Download: The Forgiveness of God: https://discoveryseries.org/courses/the-forgiveness-of-god/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  Psalm 37:4 NIV  Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+37%3A4&version=NIV Mark 10:18 NIV  “No one is good—except God alone.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%2010%3A18&version=NIV

"How about showing Pastor Lopez to his room, Caden?" suggested Mom when the visiting pastor arrived for the weekend. "Sure. You're going to use my room," Caden told the pastor, then led the way. "I left some space in the closet for you, and I cleared out the top dresser drawer." Caden switched on the overhead light in his room. "Oh, I forgot." He picked up a lamp from his desk. "This lamp doesn't work, but Mom said you could use the one from her room. I'll get it." "Maybe I can repair that one," said Pastor Lopez. "I know a little about fixing electric things. Let's have a look." "Really? You sure you want to?" Caden asked. Pastor Lopez smiled and nodded, so Caden handed him the lamp. Caden watched Pastor Lopez tinker with the lamp. Hearing him mumble something in Spanish, Caden grinned. "I'm learning Spanish in school," he said. "Could you teach me some words while you're here?" "I'll be glad to," said Pastor Lopez with a smile. "I was just saying 'this doesn't work' in Spanish. The phrase we use for an appliance that doesn't work is no sirve. In my church in Mexico, we have a saying: El que no sirve, no sirve." Caden repeated the phrase. "El que no sirve, no sirve. What does that mean?" "Literally translated, it means 'He who doesn't serve, doesn't serve.' It's a reminder that if a Christian is not being a servant, he's something like this broken lamp. As Christians, we're called to be servants because Jesus was a servant to us--He left the glory of heaven and came to earth to die for our sins. When we serve others, we shine His light into their lives " Pastor Lopez flipped the switch and the lamp came on. "So they can see how much He loves them." "You fixed it!" Caleb exclaimed. "I've been needing the light from that lamp." He grinned. "From now on it will remind me to be a servant like Jesus so others can see their need for Him." HOLLY F. CEPEDA How About You? Do you think of yourself as a servant? If you trust in Jesus, He's called you to be a servant so others can know what He's done for them. What can you do to serve others? Maybe you can do yardwork for an elderly neighbor, help a classmate who's struggling with schoolwork, or simply listen to someone who needs a friend. When you serve others, you shine the light of Jesus' love into their lives. Today's Key Verse: FOR EVEN THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED, BUT TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY. (NIV) (MARK 10:45) Today's Key Thought: Be a servant like Jesus

Hebrews 12:1-3, 12-13, 22-24 (NIV) Psalm 27 (NIV) Mark 10:46-52 (NVI) We long for wholeness. Our world is not whole. We are not whole. In a world of despair, we set our hope for wholeness on Jesus, who has come to make us whole. The journey to wholeness is a process, has cycles, but doesn't go in circles. It is a journey upwards and a journey downwards — an ascension and an excavation. In the journey downwards we dig deeply into the sin and the pain that it has caused to allow Jesus to bring his healing. In the journey upwards, we keep our eyes fixed on the wholeness that Jesus promises to bring. Wherever you are in your healing journey, in the digging down and rising up, in the pain of the excavation and in the joy of the ascension, God is there. If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.—Psalm 139 In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him —Psalm 95
