Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves, MO

May 30, 2021. What does the Trinity mean for us? Why does it matter? And perhaps most important, what do the readings for today reveal about all the ways that God shows up in our world? Readings: Isaiah 6:1-8, Psalm 29, Romans 8:12-17, John 3:1-17 *** Transcript *** Today is Trinity Sunday, so I kinda feel like I should probably be standing up here in front of you who are in your pews, in front of you who are in your homes, and eloquently explain the doctrine of the Trinity, perhaps even using a three-leafed clover metaphor, they way St. Patrick did centuries ago. On the surface, the idea of the Trinity seems pretty straightforward — three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God. Simple enough, right? The reality is that life is not that simple, and as Mr. Jesse was saying, so much change happens naturally — and then on top of that, in the last year all of the “change to the change.” (I love that phrase.) And the reality is around the Trinity, wars have been fought, and people have died, because of differences in understanding the Trinity. And yet the Trinity stands, and we confess it here at Christ Lutheran every week. In the creeds we claim the Father, the Son, and the Spirit as three persons in this Triune God. And it's one of the greatest mysteries of our faith. I'm sure you will be relieved to hear that I will not attempt to sort out two millennia of conversations, battles, arguments, and council doctrines on the Trinity today. Far more important for us, I believe, is what does the Trinity mean for us? Why does it matter? And perhaps most important, what do our readings for Trinity Sunday reveal about all the ways that God shows up in our world? Psalm 29 paints this picture of God in waves crashing on the ocean, in the flashes and booms of powerful storms, and in the silent and formidable presence of enormous trees that are centuries old. God's majesty surrounds us, overwhelms us, and although it touches us, we can't quite bear to touch it. This is God, creator of the universe, deserving of glory, before whom none of us, truth be told, are quite ready to stand. The full majesty of God makes us quake in our boots, at least a little bit. In Isaiah, we enter a vision of God called Yahweh, seated on a throne, surrounded by seraphs singing “Holy, holy, holy!” Isaiah is called into a swirl of turmoil and anxiety of a community that has just lost their king of 30 years. Talk about change! Isaiah feels completely inadequate, and it's no surprise that his first response is, “Woe is me! I am unclean, and yet I have seen the Lord!” In a miracle of grace, God prepares Isaiah, so that he can cry, “Here am I. Send me!” And God prepares not just Isaiah, but us, you and me, to go out as witnesses to this grace. Jesus, God-in-flesh, tells Nicodemus about the intimate connection between Christ in his humanity, and us in our humanity. God came to us in Christ to bring life and redemption, to embody the love and promise, and to be in relationship with us, on our terms. And in that relationship, because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, our brokenness is redeemed, and our joy is made complete. In Christ, God enters fully into our suffering, as well as our joy. God goes through all these changes that we've been talking about with us. God is with us in that. God-in-flesh embraces our grief, and shows us through the resurrection that death and loss will not be the final word. God enters our joy, and revels with us in the beauty of creation around us. Jesus-God sits with us, eats with us, laughs with us, cries with us. Because God revealed God's self to us in Jesus, we know that God is not only majesty and splendor and power, but intimately involved in our everyday life. Because God became fully human, we know that we are never alone. We have a God who understands what it means to be human. And interwoven in all of this is the Spirit, perhaps the most mysterious aspect of the Trinity. Jesus tries to explain this to Nicodemus, too. “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.” The Spirit empowers us to recognize who we are as children of God, and it is only through the Spirit that we call God Abba, Father. The Spirit breathes life to dry bones in the desert, anoints and calls the apostles in fire at Pentecost, calls Jews and Gentiles alike to baptism in the days of the early church. “The wind blows where it chooses...” And as we read this passage again 2000 years later, we can perhaps be comforted by knowing that even Nicodemus, teacher though he was, didn't understand it fully. He badly wanted to understand, wanted in a way to touch Jesus, but then found that he just couldn't get there. Just as Isaiah felt overwhelmed by his experience of God, so did Nicodemus. The Trinity is complex, and it's defied definition for millennia now. So, for today, it seems enough to trust that in the Trinity, our God is all things for us — majesty and power, a fellow traveler intimately acquainted with our human experience, and one who tells us who we are and empowers us to witness to the world. And when all of these things come together in the one God, something happens that goes far beyond division of labor, each person filling their appointed role. It cannot be adequately captured in any one metaphor, although I am sure you can imagine that doesn't stop me from trying. In Quest for the Living God, Catholic feminist theologian Elizabeth Johnson describes the Trinity as three persons in a dance that never ends. She writes, “The three circling around in a mutual dynamic movement of love, God is not a static being, but a plentitude of self-giving love, a saving mystery that overflows into the world of sin and death to heal, redeem, and liberate.” Johnson presents an image of God in relationship with God's self, equal, fully grounded in love. This is the motivation for creation — God did not create the world to follow law or do God's will, but to be in loving relationship with God, with us, and with the rest of creation. And the Trinity is one of the greatest mysteries of our faith. As hard as we may try to neatly define and understand the Trinity, we discover as Nicodemus did that God will not be contained. Paul tells us that we've been given the Spirit of adoption as children of the Triune God. We are adopted into that love that overflows into our broken world. We are intimately integrated into the mysterious, creative, moving, loving, healing, inspiring, transforming Trinity. We, along with all creation, are invited to the dance, which never stops evolving as creation continues, 2000 years after Nicodemus struggled to wrap his mind around the mysteries of God. Jesus tells Nicodemus, “The wind blows where it chooses... and so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” We are, Paul tells us, adopted into the Trinity, and we are called to follow the Spirit where it chooses. Not to understand, not to define, certainly not to limit — for ours is a God who will not be so easily contained. We as God's beloveds are invited to enter the sacred dance, and empowered to join Isaiah in saying, “Here I am, send me!” We're children of the Triune God, and we follow the wind. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Isaiah 6:1-8, Psalm 29, Romans 8:12-17, John 3:1-17, Quest for the Living God, Elizabeth Johnson, Jesse Helton

When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it's a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What's the difference between a toxic person and someone who's broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it's time to walk away from a toxic person? In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Elisa and Eryn take us through a previous conversation with Gary Thomas who will be leading us in a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people.   About our guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today's show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 35 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.   Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn't always a statement of failure; it's a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here's my voice, here's my mission” . . .  and don't let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you're crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don't want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.”   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary's book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Gary's Instagram: garythomasbooks   Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. 1 Corinthians 15:12-27The Resurrection of the Dead12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have died[a] in Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.[b] 21 For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; 22 for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end,[c] when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For “God[d] has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is plain that this does not include the one who put all things in subjection under him.

We think our world is changing fast - but we've got nothing on the first century! Even after Jesus ascended, tidal waves of change continued to break. Welcome to Day 1624 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomIndomitable Will – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1624 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Mahatma Gandhi, and it is: “Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from an indomitable will.”    Indomitable Will In most of the world, and throughout recorded history, the saying, “Might Makes Right,” was the mantra for proving that you are tougher than your opponent. In reality, though, there is nothing farther from the truth. It is not the strongest that conquers but those who have the perseverance to continue when others quit. Humility is not a weakness; it is strength in the face of opposition. Through brute strength, those who try to push their way forward are overcompensating to cover their shortcomings and insecurity. As Christ-followers and fellow image-bearers of God, we must not rely on the strength that comes from physical capacity, but on the power that comes from an indomitable will to carry on for God's kingdom. There is no reason to flaunt our physical strength, when we can do so much more with the power that comes through tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We are to put on their attributes and character traits and we were putting on the finest clothing that money can buy. We are told in: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians%203%3A12&version=NLT (Colossians 3:12) Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Christ Lutheran Church in Webster Groves, MO

March 17, 2021. Tonight's testimonial comes from Rachel Helton, who shares with us the idea that finding the truth can be complicated. Some things that are not true can sound and almost feel true. And some things are so absurd that they sound like lies, but are actually true. Reading: John 8:12-20, John 3:16 *** Transcript *** Have any of you ever played the game Two Truths and a Lie? So I’ve played this game both as a kid in the middle of the night at slumber parties, and as an adult as an icebreaker activity. And so if you haven’t played it, here’s how it works: you tell the group of people that you're with two true statements (usually about yourself) and one that's a lie, and then the group has to try and figure out which of the things you're saying is the lie. So if it were my turn, it might go something like this: as a kid I used to ride my bike to my grandma’s house almost every day; I once had a pet goat; I learned to drive a tractor before I learned to drive a car. Okay, those are my three things. And depending on how well you know me, and how much you know about my life as a kid growing up on our family’s farm in rural Illinois, you may or may not be able to pick out which one of those is the lie. So interestingly when you're playing this game, the more absurd your truths are, the more complicated it is to tease out which one of your statements is the lie — because they all sound suspiciously untrue, right? So if I were to say: I once rode an elephant through the streets of a city in India; I once came within 20 feet of a leopard shark while snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef; and I once walked on a suspension bridge made of rope above the rainforest canopy in west Africa. Now which one of those is the lie? It gets a little bit trickier, right? Because they all sound somewhat far-fetched and untrue, right? And on the flip side, if your lie is really close to the truth, it makes it hard to spot. So this is my last example, I promise — and if you want to play this game on your own later, you are welcome to do that. So, here are my last three statements: today is the birthday of a kid who's pretty special to me; on my next birthday I’ll be 45; next Sunday is the baptismal birthday of one of my own kids. It might be hard to find the lie, because those three statements probably all sound like they probably could be true. So all that to say: finding the truth can be complicated. And that’s maybe why I’ve struggled to put down into words the reflection that I wanted to share tonight. The more we know about the subject or the person, the easier it is. But sometimes, it requires us to trust that something that sounds completely absurd, just might actually be true. And sometimes it requires us to question whether something that sounds “mostly true” might in fact be a lie. So when our son Isaac was a baby, Easter fell on the same date as it does this year. So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Lent from the year 2010. The first time we ever took Isaac out in public, we took him to the Ash Wednesday service at our church — and he wasn’t even a month old yet then. When I went forward to be marked with ashes, our pastor reached out and marked the cross on my forehead with ashes, and then without even a moment's hesitation he reached down and traced the cross on the forehead of the baby who was sleeping in my arms. I remember thinking wow, this kid hasn’t even been baptized yet. He hasn't even received a blessing at communion. For goodness sakes, his belly button hasn’t even healed. He had just arrived to the world, and here we were marking that he would one day return to dust — that his life on earth, just like mine and yours, would someday end. And the truth of that felt so very heavy to me. And it wouldn’t be hard for me to get stuck in the weight of that truth — the truth that we are sinful and mortal. A good friend recently reminded me though that the ashes that mark our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are mixed with the oil that anoints us at our baptisms, so that that mark of our mortality is also the promise of life, the promise of being chosen and beloved — not because of anything we do or don’t do, but because of who God is. The truth of being beloved, no matter who I am or what I do or don't do, is almost too absurd to sound true. The lie that I sometimes hear myself saying to myself is that I can earn God’s love, maybe even that I should somehow earn God’s love — because that almost sounds true by the standards of the world. But there’s another lie that sometimes sneaks in — that because I am freed by grace, because I am given it without having to earn it, that I am also freed from any responsibility. And that part is simply not true. In tonight’s reading, Jesus says in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world… the light of life.” And in Sunday’s reading from John chapter 3 we heard that God so loved the world that God sent his only Son into it, not for the sake of wagging an accusing finger at us, but to bring about justice and to put the world right again. And I really think that we have a responsibility to be a part of that ongoing work of bringing about God’s justice and love in the world. So in a world of uncertainty, of indistinction where sometimes it's hard to tell the truth from the lies, in a world where we do not need to look hard to be reminded that we will one day die, the truth that I’m holding onto right now, no matter how hard it is sometimes to believe, is that I am beloved — beloved by a God who is life. And being loved by the God of life frees me from trying to earn God’s love. It frees me to focus on loving others, and to participate in bringing about God’s justice. That is my responsibility. And just for the record: I’ve never driven a tractor, and I’ll be 44 (not 45) on my next birthday, and I’ve never snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef. And as far as those truths go? Well, if you're watching, happy birthday Xavier! *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, testimonial, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Rachel Helton, John 8:12-20, John 3:16

Welcome to Day 1560 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomAging Gracefully – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Today is Day 1560 of our Trek, and it's time for another snippet of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Michel de Montaigne, and it is:  Take care that old age does not wrinkle your spirit even more than your face.     Aging Gracefully Even with today's technological advances, every person on earth is aging a bit more each day. There is no way to completely stop or reverse the aging process completely, but if we take care of ourselves physically, we may slow it somewhat. Lifespans are certainly being extended, but there is no fountain of youth. We may not be able to stop the wrinkles and other physical signs of aging, but with those wrinkles and white hair, we should be growing in wisdom. As we grow in wisdom, there is a more critical aspect to aging that we do have some control over, which is the aging of our spirit. We don't have to let the aging process destroy our spirit. We can remain youthful in our souls based on the wisdom we gain with our age. Each day our spirit can be re-energized and renewed. We can allow the experiences in our lives and the lessons that we have learned from them to smooth out our internal wrinkles. With age comes maturity; at least that should be a by-product of age. Maturity does not have to dampen our spirit but can energize us to make a more significant impact on our world, no matter how large or small our world is. Few people understand the impact their lives have on their world. The more we age, the more significant impact we will have on eternity. One movie that portrays this concept so well is my favorite Christmas movie, ‘It's a Wonderful Life.' Jimmy Stewart, who plays George Bailey, gets to experience how his life impacted the entire town of Bedford Falls.  He was just an ordinary person whose impact was immense and the lives of many others.   As I am now on my 65th revolution around the sun, I am reminded daily how my legacy will impact my world. Both physically and within my spirit, I still see myself as forever young. While I pray that God will grant me at least another 65 years to impact eternity, I have to live each day with the realization of what I do today is important. May God grant you a wrinkle-free spirit and me. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job%2012%3A12&version=NLT (Job 12:12) Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+92%3A12-15&version=NLT (Psalm 92:12-15) But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord's own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age, they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, “The Lord is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it’s a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What’s the difference between a toxic person and someone who’s broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it’s time to walk away from a toxic person? In this episode, our guest Gary Thomas will be leading us through a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people. Bio of guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today’s show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 25 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.  Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn’t always a statement of failure; it’s a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here’s my voice, here’s my mission” . . .  and don’t let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you’re crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Walking away is actually an act of worship.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don’t want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary’s book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. Welcome to Day 1490 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomCatch Excellence – Wisdom UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1490 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Vince Lombardi, and it is:    If we chase perfection — we can catch excellence.  Catch ExcellenceCertainly, we know that no human is perfect. That is plainly evident each day of our lives. While perfection is not attainable, achieving a level of excellence in a particular area of life is possible. Becoming excellent requires focusing on the fundamental steps in the area we desire to become perfect. There is an old saying that ‘practice makes perfect.' While that may sound logical, a more accurate statement is ‘perfect practices makes perfect.' As stated, we cannot achieve perfection; we can chase perfection, which will allow us to become excellent in any number of life areas where we choose to succeed.  So on your path to excellence, invest the time, talent, and treasures in chasing perfection; you will then catch excellence. If we have this philosophy in life, we can agree with the Apostle Paul when he wrote https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+3%3A12-14&version=NLT (Philippians 3:12-14) I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. If you would like free access to my database of over 11,000 inspirational quotes, the link is available on the main page of Wisdom-Trek.com. Just as you enjoy these nuggets of wisdom, encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1489 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically. The problem with the social gospel is that it ends up being all "social" and no "gospel." The social reform that Jesus brings is just a byproduct of one individual being set free from sin, and then another, and another. His and our mission is to transform slaves of Satan into children of God. Now that I've made these provocative statements I'll let Jim back them up. The Church is going to do good in the world. But doing good in the world is not why we're here! It's so easy to focus on what's right in front of us. And thanks to the media, including "new media," pressing social problems demand attention. But our collective mission is higher than that. What is our purpose here? What is the crucial task that only we - with the help of the Holy Spirit - can do? In a new sermon, Jim will introduce us to a word that appears only in the book of Ephesians - the "heavenlies." Have you wondered what Jesus looks like? Have you looked at paintings of Jesus and felt disappointed that they did not capture what you know about him? Do you struggle to worship an invisible God? Welcome to Day 4 of the daily devotional podcasts called HEAVEN HELP US. In these tumultuous days, are walking slowly through Book of Revelation. It’s a book about the future that teaches us how to live in this present time. There is a photograph of Jesus in the Bible. You can have a mental picture of Jesus. That picture can change your Christian life. I’m Phil McCallum with the People Magnet School. We are here to help you to become ridiculously influential for Jesus. You will become influential when you can see Jesus everywhere you go. Today we will read Revelation 1:12-20. This is the only description of what Jesus looks like in the Bible. Welcome to Day 1467 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomExhausted! – Humor UnpluggedWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. This is Day 1467 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30) A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22) A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny which is titled: Exhausted!Frank, a CPA, was well known throughout the city for his detailed accounting and auditing skills. He had won several awards and accommodations for his stellar work.  Knowing that he had a full workload for the upcoming week, we went to bed extra early on Sunday. As it turned out, he did not sleep well that night. He finally got out of bed at 6:00 am, got a shower and dressed, and headed down to the kitchen. His wife Jane was busily cooking a nutritious breakfast for him when he sleepily shuffled in and plopped down at the kitchen table. Jane looked at him with a lovingly look and said, “Frank, you look exhausted, but I know you went to bed extra early last night. What is the problem?” Frank looked at Jane through half-opened eyes and complained, “I don't think I slept a wink last night.” Jane looked at Frank curiously and replied, "Why didn't you count sheep?" Frank replied, “I did, and that's what got me into trouble. I made a mistake the first hour, and it took until morning to correct it.”I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “https://www.azquotes.com/quote/105824?ref=forgive-your-enemies (My Morning Routine includes 10 minutes of sitting on my bed thinking about how tired I am.)” Here is our verse for today: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes%205%3A12&version=NLT (Ecclesiastes 5:12) People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good night's sleep. Just as you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1466 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at Wisdom-Trek.com.  I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day will be downloaded to you automatically. Thank you for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and most importantly, I am your friend as I serve you in through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal each day. As we take this Trek of life together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others Generously Lead with Integrity Leave a Living Legacy Each Day I am Guthrie Chamberlain….reminding you to 'Keep Moving Forward,' ‘Enjoy your Journey,'...

In the kingdom of God, being comes before doing. In recent episodes we've heard Paul say that we're to "put off the old self;" and that former "us" had to go - he was no good. When we come to Colossians 3:12 the Apostle will tell us to "put on" some things... but not before he reminds us that these are not "good works" as we used to think about them; ways to earn "brownie points" with God. They're expressions of a new nature, and He is the sovereign Source. Here's part 1 of the sermon The Proof is in the Product from Pastor Jim. You won't "press on" in God by going back to religion. The legalists are doing something far worse than asking us to adopt some outdated rituals. They're devaluing the sacrifice of Christ. And they want to put us back under the Law, which is to say, they want to put us back under condemnation! To refute them, Paul wrote one of the most powerful passages in the Bible. "See to it that no one takes you captive." Paul wrote to the Colossians to keep them free. In the second chapter of his letter he contrasts the wisdom found in Christ, to the plausible arguments of the philosophers. He sets the fullness and completeness of Jesus, against the 2-dimensional world of the legalists: all symbolism and no substance. Their religion isn't spiritual at all; it deals only with things that can be touched. Paul argues that the dead - that's us - aren't concerned with such things. Here's Pastor Jim with Part 2 of, Death to Life. When the glass is full, stop pouring! False teachers insist that we should add something to Christ; old rituals, new books, something. These "Jesus Plus" liars have been around since Jesus left, and Paul gave us the antidote to their poison in the book of Colossians: We are full. No more can be added to what God has done for us, in Christ. Here's Jim to open his sermon, Death to Life. Listen to Right Start Radio every Monday through Friday on WCVX 1160AM (Cincinnati, OH) at 9:30am, WHKC 91.5FM (Columbus, OH) at 5:00pm, WRFD 880AM (Columbus, OH) at 9:00am and WRZN 720AM (Gainesville & Ocala, FL) at 7:30am. "They had to put family second in order to put Jesus first. And here we see that even Jesus had to do this. He had to put His parents second so that He could put His Heavenly Father First."
