Welcome to Day 1726 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomHouse vs. Home – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1726 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Benjamin Franklin, and it is: A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body. House vs. Home While Ben Franklin did not expand far enough on the differences between a house and a home, this is a good foundation.  A house is just a structure where people may dwell, but a home supports, nourishes, and protects those who live within. This nourishment and protection go beyond the physical needs of the family who lives within the home. A strong home will provide the necessities of food and fire for the mind as well as the body. No person is complete who is just feed physically. Each person who lives within a home must also have their mind filled with nutrients and protection and be an educated, well-rounded individual. So, within your home each day, ensure that each occupant is fed well and kept warm in both body and mind. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%203%3A33&version=NLT (Proverbs 3:33) The Lord curses the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the upright. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.'  If you would like to listen to any of our past 1724 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically. EP. 49: Finding Freedom from Toxic People (Best of 2020 with Gary Thomas)

God Hears Her Podcast

When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it's a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What's the difference between a toxic person and someone who's broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it's time to walk away from a toxic person? In this “best of” episode of God Hears Her, Elisa and Eryn take us through a previous conversation with Gary Thomas who will be leading us in a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people.   About our guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today's show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 35 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.   Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn't always a statement of failure; it's a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here's my voice, here's my mission” . . .  and don't let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you're crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don't want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.”   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary's book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Gary's Instagram: garythomasbooks   Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. Welcome to Day 1629 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomInfectious Attitude – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!  Today is Day 1629 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Roger Allan Raby, and it is: A bad attitude is the worst thing that can happen to a group of people. It's infectious.    Infectious Attitude Attitude will make or break a family, a church, or any type of organization.  If there is a person with a bad attitude, it is like cancer cells that will slowly start to invade and then destroy the organization from the inside out. It is undoubtedly the worst thing that can happen to a group of people.  If a negative attitude is permitted to exist, it will spread just like cancer until it takes over that group's focus and direction. Just like cancer, it must be cut out to avoid any further damage to the host. As with any surgery, this process can be excruciating but is required to spare the organization's life. The treatment or surgery must be administered as soon as the bad attitude is detected.  With cancer, even after it is purged from the body, continual monitoring must is required after the surgery or treatment to ensure that cancer does not return. It will be the same for attitude in any organization. As Zig Ziglar is quoted, “you need a check-up from the neck up.” Continual monitoring will ensure that the organization remains healthy. Once good health has returned to our bodies, eating well and regular exercise will help maintain good health. In an organization, a continual diet of positive attitudes and accomplishments will ensure many years of success. Good attitudes are also infectious, but positively. Like a small packet of yeast will permeate a large amount of dough, so it is with a positive attitude that it will spread through the family, church, company, or any other organization. When you purge the bad, you must replace it with good. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2015%3A33&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 15:33) Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%203%3A8&version=NLT (1 Peter 3:8) Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Peter brought information to Cornelius. The Spirit brought transformation. We've been talking about the historic meeting that took place when the Jewish delegation - Peter and some brothers from Joppa - brought the message of Christ to the Roman soldier Cornelius. Peter shared one truth he had just learned, himself: that the important division isn't between Jew and Gentile; but between the unbelieving, and the forgiven. Yesterday Jim began to list highlights from that gathering. Today, we'll get to the main events: two baptisms. There was an enormous spiritual earthquake. The epicenter: Caesarea. We would have set modest goals for the first meeting between the Apostle Peter and the Gentile Cornelius. Set foot inside the door, shake hands, have a photo op. Baby steps. But God had something much bigger in mind for that gathering. And it started to unfold when Peter began to speak. Jim will highlight some of the things that came out of that seismic event. Here's Part 1 of his sermon, The Apostolic Witness. Today is Day 1617 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from   Calvin Miller, and it is:  Careers, even religious careers, may become little more than forums for our own advancement. But how are we to deal with such ambition? Our longing after Christ must exceed our need for status in the world. Need for Status All of us crave to be accepted by others. Most of us yearn to have a level of status among our work associates, peers, friends, and family. It appears to be a burning need in our lives. I acknowledge that I struggle with the need for status, and it probably applies to you also. No career or leadership position is exempt, even pastors, priests, missionaries, and lay leaders within the church. For all of us who are Christ-followers, how do we reconcile this need for status with our desire to image God, as the perfect imager Jesus Christ did? In the New Testament Scripture, we certainly see that Jesus's closest companions and disciples struggled with the need for status. Think about the epic struggles and posturing between the ‘inner circle' of the disciples, Peter, James, and John. Think about the 12 sons of Jacob in the Old Testament who were constantly in a struggle for status to the point where they were willing to sell their brother Joseph into slavery. We are not immune to the same battle.  As with any area of life, the first step to overcome our intense need for status is to acknowledge that it is an issue and that we desire to become less controlled by it. As Christ-followers and fellow imagers of God, our desire to fulfill those roles must be stronger than our need for status in the world. It may not be easy, but it is possible. If we desire to serve effectively in God's kingdom on earth, we need to be willing to serve humbly. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+9%3A33-37&version=NLT (Mark 9:33-37) After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”  Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” As you ponder another bit of wisdom from Gramps, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along with us tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Through this tiny seed of care, passion, and faith, significant changes have their nucleus. It does not require a lot of resources, time, or effort to begin that change process in your life and the world you impact, just a tiny spark of desire to make the change.  Just like a tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire, or the smallest flame to shine in the darkness, so it is with making changes in our world. It is the consistent small steps over time that will allow nations to rise or fall. It is the consistent small steps over time that enable great success, or failure.  It is also the small, consistent steps over time that will build God's kingdom on earth. Over the past 2,000 years, from a handful of loyal disciples, the church of Christ has grown into a body of untold millions. This growth will continue until the day when Jesus Christ will return to establish the new Eden where heaven and earth combine. That is the change that we are seeking, and it only requires that you have the faith of a mustard seed that grows into a mighty tree. It only requires that you have the faith of a small measure of yeast to impact the whole batch of dough. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2013%3A33&version=NLT (Matthew 13:33) Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+13%3A18-19&version=NLT (Luke 13:18-19) Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?  It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' "In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise." That's Proverbs 10:19. On Friday we began looking at a section of the Sermon on the Mount that someone has headlined, "Oaths." It's Matthew 5, verses 33 through 37. But this section covers more than verbally stealing heaven's property; Jesus wants us to say what we know, then stop talking. "Just the facts, ma'am." Murder, adultery and... language? Up to this point in our study of the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord has addressed some monumentally important issues. Now He turns to the subject of oaths - you know, those promises with a little extra "kick" to them? And again we'll see that what was allowed under the Old Covenant is not considered kosher in the New. Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1495 of our Trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from  Latin Proverb, and it is:   If you always live with those who are lame, you will yourself learn to limp.   Don't Be Lame This proverb is so true, and makes me think of so many other sayings and proverbs. One that I remember mom telling us when we were teenagers was, “If you lie down with dogs, don't be surprised that you will rise up with fleas.” Who we invest our time with will strongly influence who we become. If you want to be successful, then you need to invest your time with successful people. If you desire to learn and show love and compassion then invest more time with those who already show those traits. Jim Rohm was credited with saying that “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This is so true, and I see examples of this fact nearly every day, both good, and bad. If you desire to be wise then you must invest your time with the wise. Once again the irrefutable law of planting and harvesting applies here. When you plant corn, you will harvest corn. If you plant wheat, you will harvest wheat. If you plant weeds or thornbushes, that is what you will harvest. There is no changing this universal law of God. Don't invest time with those who are lame in spirit, or you will limp through life not being able to fulfill your God-given talents and abilities. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2015%3A33&version=NLT (1 Corinthians 15:33) Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. When you read the term “toxic people,” who comes to mind? A coworker? A family member? Someone at church? Maybe it’s a group of people who feed off of one another in the worst of ways. What makes someone toxic? What’s the difference between a toxic person and someone who’s broken and needs extra love? How do you know when it’s time to walk away from a toxic person? In this episode, our guest Gary Thomas will be leading us through a discussion of how to recognize and when to walk away from toxic people. Bio of guest:  Gary Thomas is the best-selling author of over 20 books including the topic of today’s show: When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People. Gary serves on the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 25 years. They have three adult children and a granddaughter.  Notes and Quotes:  “Walking away isn’t always a statement of failure; it’s a statement of strategy.” If we let toxic people control our thoughts and focus, then we lose sight of the purpose God has for us. “Here’s my voice, here’s my mission” . . .  and don’t let a toxic person distract you from that mission. Women in their fifties will look back at the toxic people from their twenties and laugh at how insignificant those people have become in their lives. “Gaslighting is when somebody makes you feel like you’re crazy when you are speaking the truth.” “When you question your own sanity, they are destroying your foundation.” “All toxic people are difficult, but not all difficult people are toxic.” “Toxic people love to act in a toxic manner. Healthy people will occasionally act in a toxic way.” “Walking away is actually an act of worship.” “Toxic people often use toxic language. . . . They don’t want you to act like a Christian to please God, they are using your desire to please God as a weapon to control you.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Gary’s book When to Walk Away: Finding Freedom from Toxic People on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3kt8eyp  Free eBooklet to Download: When Violence Comes Home: Help for Victims of Spousal Abuse https://discoveryseries.org/courses/when-violence-comes-home/ Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy Verses Mentioned in Show:  John 15:8 NIV “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A8&version=NIV  Mark 11:12–25 Jesus Curses a Fig Tree https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+11%3A12-25&version=NIV  Matthew 6:33 NIV “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6%3A33&version=NIV  Matthew 7:6 NIV “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. October 4, 2020. The parable of the wicked tenants is a powerful story that contains the entire gospel message. In his sermon today, guest preacher Jon Heerboth delves into the meaning of this reading, and what God expects of us. Readings: Isaiah 5:1-7, Philippians 3:4b-14, Matthew 21:33-46 *** Transcript *** Well, that's quite a parable. Sometimes it is hard to interpret the parables. "Why did you always talk in parables?" we ask Jesus, along with his disciples. The disciples were right there with Jesus and struggled to understand what he was talking about. What chance do we have? The parable in today's gospel is easier to interpret than many, but its meaning is difficult to accept. Jesus is in Jerusalem. It's a couple of days after Palm Sunday. The people welcomed him with loud hosannas. It's been a long time since the light first shined on Jesus' listeners in Galilee. Many miles have been walked, many words have been spoken, and many wonders done. Jesus has been through the towns and cities of Galilee. He's been in the synagogues teaching and proclaiming, talking about the kingdom of heaven. He has healed every kind of disease and affliction, he's been in Gentile territory, and he's been in Judea. It's been a long time, many miles walked, many words spoken, many wonders done. Everyone has heard about him or gone to see him. Now Jesus arrives at the temple in Jerusalem, and he puts them on notice. He ran off the people who were selling. He turned over the tables of the money changers and the seats of the dove sellers. He said they were turning a house of prayer into a den of robbers. And then he went back to healing the sick and lame and restoring sight to the blind. In the gospel lesson, the leaders of the temple came to challenge Jesus. They were the wealthy, the religious elite of their day. They depended on the money spent at the temple to maintain their power. You have to hand it to the chief priests and the elders: when Jesus told them the parable about the bad tenants, they got it. They understood right away that Jesus was talking about them. Jesus showed them the truth, that they were looking after themselves and their own wealth rather than tending to the needs of God's people. Jesus held a mirror to them, and they did not like it. They wanted to arrest him, but didn't want to offend the crowds he drew, who thought Jesus was a prophet. This parable is a powerful story that contains the entire gospel message. God's people — the vineyard — were producing fruit, but the tenants were not returning any of that fruit to God. God sent prophets, but they were rejected. Jesus is the son of the landlord who came to reclaim what rightfully belongs to his father, but his mission was violently received by the father's own tenants, the very religious leaders who were confronting Jesus on the temple grounds. Jesus told them that the stone that the builders rejected would become the cornerstone. That would be the Lord's doing, and would be amazing. Jesus also told them that the kingdom of God would be taken away from them and given to the people who produce the fruits of the kingdom.We're going to retell that whole gospel story in the Apostle's Creed in a few minutes. That's the centerpiece of our faith. To reclaim the fruits that rightfully belong to the Father, the Son sets out to restore the world to its divinely created order. Jesus' own ministry revealed what that would look like: the sick made well, sinners forgiven and restored, the poor cared for, so that the people would praise God. Jesus was here to bring wholeness to a broken world and to give us a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven. He showed us what God wanted creation to look like. It would be easy to read this parable and turn our eyes to our pastors, our bishops, and the churchwide leaders. Like the high priests in Jesus' time, they are God's tenants in the institutional church, and should make sure the landlord is receiving the fruits of their labor. Let's not leave the entire job to the church leaders though. When we lived in the country some years ago, our neighbors were all farmers. They were all tenants whose farming had expanded far beyond their original fields. They rented almost any productive parcel of ground they could find. They farmed the land and returned to the landlord cash rent, or a share of the crop — or both, depending upon their agreement. The farmers I knew, and they were very successful indeed, worked hard to keep their landlords happy. They cared for the land. The most conscientious cut the weeds in the ditches to keep the fence lines looking neat. One farmer I know made a point to travel around the country to visit his landlords in person during the winter. If the landlords were unhappy they would rent to another, and the farmer would lose production. We are all like tenants, aren't we? God has given our congregation and ourselves vineyards to tend. We have our personal lives and families. We have our professional lives. We have our friendships and other relationships. We have our faith and our worship together. Our landlord expects us to produce and share the harvests from every aspect of our lives. When we read again the words of verse 43, "The kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who produces the fruits of the kingdom," we know that our landlord will hold us to account. In the lesson from Isaiah, the prophet was speaking for God to Israel asking, "What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done?" The vineyard was Israel and Judah. God's people were his pleasant planting. That vineyard produced only wild, sour fruit. What was the sweet fruit that God expected? God demanded justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry of oppression from the poor of the day. The prophet tried to hold the leaders accountable. What more was there for God to do? Nothing? Then God would tear the vineyard down and stop the rainfall, and God's people would soon be gone. Well what are the sweet fruits of God's vineyard? What is God looking for from us? Fortunately, Matthew doesn't make us guess. If we walk back Jesus' many steps to the beginning of his ministry in Galilee, we can listen again to the words from the Sermon on the Mount. Who bears the fruit? "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The mourners, the meek who inherit the earth, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers who will be called the children of God, the persecuted, for the theirs is the kingdom of heaven, those who are reviled and persecuted and falsely accused for Jesus' sake. Remember, they did the same thing to the prophets who came before. If we are committed to a church that bears fruit, we ought to be feeding the poor — not giving cover to the rich. We ought to be concerned about preserving the land God gave us, in terms of the earth and climate change. We ought to be concerned with treating all of God's creatures equally, and not give support to those who have made it their business to be divisive, within the church and in our society as a whole. We don't want to stand behind Jesus and wag an accusatory finger at his opponents. We should put ourselves in the shoes of the high priests and the elders, and allow ourselves to be confronted by what Jesus has to say. When we step back from the lesson and examine ourselves, we can find bits and pieces of the rebellious and self-serving tenants.Our charge is to render unto God what is God's. For anyone called by God to a particular ministry, namely all of us, there is temptation to claim ownership of that ministry and to confuse service with entitlement. When we feel a sense of entitlement, we close ourselves off to what Jesus is doing in the world. We are no longer serving Jesus, but are protecting ourselves from him. Paul wrote about his own sense of entitlement. He said if there was anyone who had reason to be confident, he had more. He listed his pedigree, his compliance with the law, his status as a Pharisee. As a conscientious Pharisee he was a zealous persecutor of the church. He was totally without blame. Paul says all of that is rubbish. It counts for nothing before God. He lost everything he thought mattered, because he learned that righteousness before God can only come from the work of Jesus Christ. Like Paul, we learn that all of the stuff we think we own and in which we trust is rubbish. Everything that matters is God's. As tenants in God's vineyard, we can say with Paul, "But this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus." Let us pray for God to bless us all, but to extend a hand of particular care to our pastor and professional staff at Christ, so that they may continue to remind us that we are all tenants in vineyards that are the Lord's.Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Jon Heerboth, Isaiah 5:1-7, Philippians 3:4b-14, Matthew 21:33-46

Welcome to Day 1466 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.I am Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomElohim In The Council – Worldview WednesdayWisdom - the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Today is Day 1466 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. This week, on our Worldview Wednesday episode, we will continue with our study based on a course I recently completed taught by Dr. Michael Heiser. Our study is titled “Sons and Daughters of God: The Believer's Identity, Calling, and Destiny” Throughout this multi-week course, we will demonstrate that, in the Old Testament, “sons of God” and “holy ones” refers to supernatural beings whose Father is God and who work with God to carry out His will and that this divine family was present before humanity. By fully engaging with biblical texts such as Psalm 82; Psalm 89, and Deuteronomy 32:8–9, our study will show that this divine family functions as a template for God's human family. God desires of humans, as His imagers, to participate in His council. This study addresses issues such as polytheism, the nature of the (little ‘g') “gods,” and the uniqueness of Yahweh. Within this study, we will apply insights to the New Testament texts and shows how the metaphor of being in God's family informs our sense of identity and mission as believers. Elohim In The Divine Council·      Segment 14: Who Is/Are Elohim? (Part 1) Refers to God of Israel, but Also Other Gods So, how do biblical writers use the term elohim? Well, the most apparent referent would be the God of Israel. You'll recall in Psalm 82; the word elohim occurred twice; the first one was undoubtedly singular and, of course, pointing to the God of Israel, later called “the Most High” in verse 6. But in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+82%3A1&version=NLT (Psalm 82:1), we also had the plural elohim of Yahweh's council. God takes His stand in the divine assembly, in the midst of the gods, and in the midst of the elohim, He passes judgment. So, the God of Israel, the gods of the divine council, elohim, is also used to refer to the gods of various nations. For instance, in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Kings+11%3A33&version=NLT (1 Kings 11:33), we have the names Ashtoreth, Chemosh, and Milcom (foreign deities), and they are all referred to with the term elohim. Now, if elohim meant to bring with it a unique set of attributes, this verse right here (1 Kings 11:33) would sort of explode that idea all by itself. Here, you have three different foreign deities. Very obviously, they are not going to have a specific set of unique attributes that we would attribute to the God of Israel. So attributes aren't wrapped up in the term elohim. Elohim Connected to Territorial Spirits Further, elohim is used in Deuteronomy 32:17 in juxtaposition with the term shedim, which most English Bibles have translated “demons.” So these are other entities that are referred to as elohim. Specifically, in that verse, the problem is that Israelites were not sacrificing properly to God but had rendered sacrifice to these other elohim who are shedim (“demons”). The term actually means territorial spirits, territorial entities. But the point is, of course, that we are not talking about the God of Israel when we refer to elohim here, and we are not assigning a specific set of unique attributes

* RSR Answers Ham's, "Is God in Control?" Bob Enyart and Fred Williams open the Real Science Radio mailbag and reply to 1) a personally addressed question from a listener, Andrew, about the giants in the Bible and any possible evidence for them today; and 2) a newsletter from Answers in Genesis presenting Ken Ham asking, "Is God in Control?" The guys answer, "No", not in the way that Ken implies. AiG and other large creation groups occasionally weigh into territory that by policy they typically avoid when now and then they obliquely promote a particular denominational or otherwise specific theological perspective. So Bob and Fred ask listeners for patience and grace as the guys directly respond to the theological implications brought up, whether intentionally or not, by the beloved founder of AiG. Stuff's easy to fake* RSR on Ancient Giants: As with the claim that a Photoshopped image actually depicts a civil-war era pterosaur photograph, Photoshoppers, intentionally or not, have deceived many who hope to find archaeological evidence of ancient giants, also known as the nephilim, etc. Ironically, well-intentioned Christians who offer erroneous evidence for the Bible end up hurting the cause of the Gospel. The giants described in the Bible are real, and therefore they are physiologically possible. Those who promote as real the Photoshopped images of oversized giants can learn a lesson from the paleontologists. First, they realized they had overcounted the number of dinosaur species by double (so 500 dino species went poof) and then the paleontologists realized that the ones that remained lost weight, big time! For example, instead of Brachiosaurus weighing 80 tons, it is now carefully calculated to have weighed about 23 tons. (Not only did this make allomotrists happier, but reducing the numbers and weight of dinosaur kinds also reduces the demand on Noah's family and ark, even though of course they brought juvenile creatures onto the ark!) As to overweight dinosaurs and oversized giants, God's design of actual creatures is not only brilliant but omnicompetent. It's not, however, science fiction. It's not cartoonish. There's also strong evidence for quantum biology, that God designed organisms to utilize the currently incomprehensible features of quantum mechanics. What God's designs do not do however, is violate the laws of physics. He designed reptiles, which grew no where near the size the larger dinosaurs, with their legs extending outward from their bodies, before they descend downward to the ground. That design, perfect for reptiles, would greatly limit the size and mass of dinosaurs, since horizontally-inclined legs would quickly fail as the animal's weight exceeded the carrying load. So God designed dinosaur legs to extend directly downward from beneath their bodies. This enables the larger kinds, such as the biblical behemoth, discovered only in 2014 and named dreadnoughtus, to gain weight till it's 65 tons, much heavier than a Boeing 737 airliner. The giants in man's ancient past described in the Bible were living, breathing, biological organisms. Therefore, they did not defy the laws of physics. Because they stood on two feet they could not be arbitrarily large. For example, cedar trees will grow to 200 feet tall (five telephone poles) and even to 230 feet! So that's quite the wild range for the imagination to run with to propose super-tall giants who could even lift average pyramid stones weighing 5,000 pounds. Hearing a Bible verse like Amos 2:9 read about "the Amorite... whose height was like the height of the cedars", one notices an abrupt cut off before reaching the end of the verse which makes clear that this is an analogy and not a literal comparison. For God says of the Amorites, "I destroyed... his roots beneath." Tolkein derived his word Ents, for the tall and strong Middle-earth tree beings, from the Anglo-Saxon word for giant. But for all that could be said about mankind's actual ancient giants, Ents notwithstanding, they did not have roots. So we can see that passages such as Amos 2:9 are not giving a literal but a metaphorical description. Other Bible passages that some of those obsessed with giants insist are literal are those that describe the Israelites as "grasshoppers" before the giants of Canaan. "There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight" (Ex. 13:33). However God uses the same metaphor in Isaiah 40:22 saying of the earth that "its inhabitants are like grasshoppers." A simile is a comparison using like or as and these verses, as overtly obvious except to those with an extreme bias, are figures of speech. Regardless though, modern "giants" who have amazed and sometimes entertained the masses top out at nearly nine feet tall and compared to these tallest modern humans, people have often described the comparison in terms not unlike the biblical figures of speech. Moses in Scripture provides an actual length measurement which can be used to estimate the height of one especially notable giant. "For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not [still] in Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit" (Deut. 3:11). So this 13.5-foot bed would make Og, leaving six inches headroom and perhaps two feet at the foot of the bed, a stunning 11 feet tall! Og would make Robert Wadlow of Alton, Illinois, the tallest measured human being, at 8.11 inches, look incredibly short in comparison! The square-cube law, first described by Galileo, compares an increase in the size of an object with its much faster increase in volume (and typically, in weight and mass). Wadlow, for example, had to walk with a cane and leg braces (which sadly caused the infection that killed him at age 22) because as his height increased, there was far too much weight for his size-proportional growing bones to support. This law gives an exact relationship of size and volume for something as straightforward as a cube. But even for things as complex as biological organisms or machines that increase in size, the law still gives a good first approximation of certain expected physical attributes and a heads up for design requirements for engineers scaling up inventions, and for God when He went from designing mice to elephants, deer to giraffes, and giraffes to Brachiosaurs. Scaling upward in size introduces unavoidable physical consequences, including as you actually or theoretically increase the proposed size of a human, or any object, including any biological organism, and that would include the physical bodies of the giants know as the nephilim. If you doubled Wadlow's height from nine feet (times 2) to 18 feet, to get his new weight you would multiply his 440 pounds by 8 (2 cubed). At 3,500 pounds his bones would be crushed with every step. So even taking into account that organisms from 6,000 to 3,000 years ago were stronger and fitter than today, and taking into account also the supernatural aspects of the origin of the nephilm, still, they possessed physical bodies. Ancient giants, unlike giraffes and Diplodocus, still walked, as people do, on two feet and two legs. To be much taller than the Bashan's Og, they couldn't have been simply much larger human-looking beings. Physically, to be as enormous as some irresponsibly claim, these giants would have had to be different kinds of beings, not people-looking kinds, for people-looking 20-foot tall giants would be physically impossible, and besides, such creatures are biblically uncalled for. So what about those believers who have invested hundreds of hours or even years studying and believing the Photoshopped giant skeletons are actually real? We urge them to ask God for the courage to study real science, and real evidence for the Scriptures. This shift in their focus could bring them enormous satisfaction and help them to have a greater influence on others, especially on those who so desperately need to hear about our creator and savior Jesus Christ.

The first King’s choice - Saul did it His way. 1 Sam. 13:13-14 13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. (The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people,) because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”His way cost Him everything. King Saul lost it all. 1 Sam. 16:14 …the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul.Why? The why is the easiest to answer. The Spirit of God departed from Saul because of his deliberate disobedience to God. Saul’s deliberate disobedience (rebellion) opened the floodgates. The word itself means “to startle, to terrify, to fall upon suddenly.”This is not God’s will for us. He calls us to finish.Heb. 12:1-3 12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself,[b] so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.2 Tim. 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.3. Every course contains challenges and difficult potholes.God forewarns us of challenging times:Josh 1:5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Mark 4:17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will[a] have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”2 Tim.3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!Potholes to avoid:a. Deception potholes - LuciferThe first leader to fall/fail due to an unmaintained thought life. It was a perfect environment. The Father was in charge. Isa. 14:12-15“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer,[b] son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!13  For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.James 1:22 Be doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving yourselves. b. Everybody’s doing it potholes - Lucifer’s angels - they followed the rebel. In a perfect leadership environment. c. Potholes: Division, Seperation, Offense, Pride….4. The answer for Potholes.Eph. 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.How do we resist the Devil? Submit to God How do we get back on the right track? Submit to GodIf we submit to God we can finish well. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; min-height: 14.0px} p.p3 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 14.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff} p.p4 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 14.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; min-height: 14.0px} p.p5 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 2.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff} p.p6 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 2.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; min-height: 14.0px} p.p7 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff} p.p8 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; min-height: 14.0px} p.p9 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Optima; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; min-height: 13.0px} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} span.s2 {text-decoration: underline ; font-kerning: none} span.s3 {font-kerning: none; color: #b34b2c; -webkit-text-stroke: 0px #b34b2c} span.s4 {font: 12.0px Arial; font-kerning: none}

Yes, I confess, I've been pulled over a time or two: twice when I was 16, once at 18, 21, 26, and 34.   Each and every time, those wonderful men in uniform wanted some information about me immediately, so they asked for my ID.  In America, we have an amazing database system implemented that gives a lot of information about you based on the Identification Card that you give to the police officer, an ID card that you aren't supposed to leave home without.  On Thursday of the Holy Week, just after Jesus has identified his betrayer, he gives his disciples an ID Card, a way that everyone would know who they serve, who they pledge allegiance to, whose follower they were.  In John 13, Jesus says, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."  (John 13:34-35)Friends, an ID card is a useful thing to always have with you, but there is identification that is better than your driver's license that you shouldn't leave home without, Love.  Today, choose to show an extra measure of the love of Christ to one another and others will know that you are His disciples.  You'll be glad you did.  credit: www.churchpop.comClick the logo below and subscribe to automatically receive these Podcasts every weekday morning on Google Play Music or iTunes.   Message Minutes are sponsored by  Washington Church of Christ and recorded for the public 107.9 The Memories WAMW morning radio program.  They air at approximately 7:35am on Weekday Mornings.To find more of the Message Minutes that have been uploaded to this blog CLICK HERE.  To subscribe to a Message Minute podcast feed on iTunes or other podcast player, copy the following URL into your subscription list.http://feeds.feedburner.com/topherwiles/MessageMinute

Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 570 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom His Infinite Wisdom – Wisdom Unplugged Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-570/ (Day 570) of our trek, and it’s time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today's quote is from J.P. de Caussade who said, “Since God offers to manage our affairs for us, let us once and for all hand them over to His infinite wisdom, in order to occupy ourselves only with Himself and what belongs to Him.” Most of us try to control every detail of our lives and many times the lives of others.  Much of the worry, anxiety, and drama that we have in our lives is because we feel out of control. We feel that the bad things of life are going to hit us, and there is little we can do about it. It is virtually impossible to control others, and many aspects of our own lives are beyond our direct control. God does give us free will, which allows us to try and control our lives and gives us the false sense that we can control circumstances. God also tells us in His Word that He will take care of us so we can turn over to Him all of the worry and anxiety that consumes our lives. God has infinite wisdom. He knows what is best for our lives.  Instead of being occupied with all the things we cannot control, let is impact for good what we can and leave the rest to God. As Jesus taught us in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matt+6%3A25-27&version=NLT (Matthew 6:25-27), “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing?  Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?  Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” Let us focus on living a right life as Jesus said in Matthew https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matt+6%3A33&version=NLT (6:33), “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged. If you enjoy these quotes, I have created and published a searchable database of over 10,000 quotes that I have collected for many years.
