Bible Reading: Matthew 15:7-9; Titus 1:15-16"Look," said Adrian, pointing to an insect he and his sister Eva had caught out in the garden. "Maybe it's praying!" Sure enough, the bug's forelegs were folded together as if in prayer. "Let's see if we can find out what it is." The kids searched online and found a picture of the bug they had caught. "It's a praying mantis," said Adrian."Does it really pray?" asked Eva.Adrian laughed. "Of course not! Bugs don't pray. I wonder what we should feed it?" He scrolled down the page. "This says they eat other insects and like to eat their prey alive.""Gross!" said Eva, wrinkling up her nose."It says here that if you put a small piece of meat on a string and move it in front of a praying mantis, he may think it's alive and eat it," said Adrian. "Let's try it!"Adrian put a tiny piece of hamburger on the end of a string, and sure enough, the mantis lunged for it."So, did your new pet like the food you gave him?" asked Mom.Adrian nodded. "The website we found said praying mantises are vicious little creatures. It said the female will even eat her husband if she gets hungry enough.""You little hypocrite," said Mom, looking at the bug. "You look so faithful and devoted with your forelegs folded like that, but you're a pretender--you don't mean it at all."Eva giggled. "That would be a good name for him." So Pretender he became.Whenever Adrian looked at Pretender, he felt a bit funny inside. At dinnertime he folded his hands and said "Amen" after his parents, but he never cared to listen to what was being said. I'm just like that bug, he thought. I'm not really praying--I'm just pretending. Adrian knew Jesus loved him, and he pretended he loved Jesus too. But he had never asked Jesus to be his Savior. As Adrian snuggled down into his blankets one night, God seemed to be whispering to him, Haven't you been a pretender long enough? Suddenly, Adrian tossed off the blankets and got up. I'm going to talk to Mom and Dad! he thought. I want to quit pretending and become a real Christian.–Matilda H. NordtvedtHow About You?Are you just going through the motions so others think you're a Christian? Are you more focused on fitting in or pleasing your parents than on God and what He thinks? God loves you so much He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for your sins so you could have eternal life with Him. He wants a real relationship with you, not a pretend one. *This episode mentions suicide and may be triggering for some listeners. This week, we’re diving into something truly transformative—the power of love to change everything. First, we hear from Father Richard Rohr, who shares his lifetime of wisdom about how experiencing deep, unconditional love—not rules or fear—is what really brings about meaningful change. Then, Pastor Zach Meerkreebs takes us to Asbury University, where a truly extraordinary event happened in that faith community. He reminds us that following Jesus’ example of humility can open our lives up to amazing possibilities. But that doesn’t say, ‘Don’t be angry.’ Right now there is so much that deserves anger—the wars in our world, how we treat the very ones Jesus told us to love, the little ones, the rejected ones. That comes from an excess of anger and a deficiency of sadness.” - Fr. Richard Rohr “An experience of infinite, unconditional love—that’s the only thing that changes us.” - Fr. Bible Reading: Psalm 62:5-8Natalie glanced at her phone. Twenty minutes. Twenty minutes to change and eat something before she had to leave for dance. Gotta move. She grabbed some mac and cheese and popped it into the microwave. As she bounded up the stairs, she passed her little brother Jacob sitting in time-out. Minutes later, the microwave dinged. Natalie tugged her leotard into place and pushed one more bobby pin into her bun. She rushed downstairs and retrieved her food. Stirring her mac and cheese, she glanced at Jacob sitting on the bottom step with his elbows on his knees, fists digging into his chubby cheeks. "What did you do this time, sport?" Natalie plopped beside her brother. "Yelled at Mommy." Jacob sighed. "I hate time-out."Natalie patted his back. "Mom doesn't stick you here just because you're in trouble. It's to help you settle down and get under control. Are you still mad?""No." Jacob paused. "Nat? Does sitting help you too?" Natalie paused mid-chew. Sitting still didn't happen much. Rushing to school and dance left her feeling anything but in control. "I'm too big for time-outs now," she said."You're never home." Jacob's eyes were sad. "I miss you."Natalie licked the cheese from her spoon. She loved dance company, though it meant she practically lived at the studio. What happened to family time? What happened to time with God?She looked at the shelf in the kitchen where she put her Bible. Maybe I need a time-out too. Natalie glanced at her phone. Five minutes. She squeezed Jacob, then walked over and picked up her Bible. A highlighted verse caught her attention: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Rest. Sounds great, God. Natalie remembered learning that this verse meant those who trusted in Jesus didn't have to strive to earn God's favor, because Jesus earned it for them. I need to stop and remember that more often. Remember He's in control. She took a deep breath and continued to read. Soon Mom was calling. Time for dance. Natalie checked her phone. Her five minutes were gone. Somehow God had stretched them, and she sensed His peace. She grinned and grabbed her brother's hand. "Race you to the car!"–Gayle VeitenheimerHow About You?Is your life overscheduled and busy? You need a spiritual time-out. Not because you're in trouble, but to build your relationship with God and get strength and wisdom to navigate the road ahead. Make sure you leave time in your busy schedule to pray, read your Bible, and worship with other Christians. Stop the frenzy for a moment and take a time-out with Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)Matthew 6:5-8 (NIV)
Bible Reading: Romans 12:18-21James was quiet as the plane rolled down the runway. "Nervous?" asked Dad."No," said James. "Well, not about the flight. I was thinking about something you said. Are you sure everyone has luggage they carry in their lives? Even bullies?"Dad nodded. "Bullies often have the heaviest life luggage of all. It's filled with rocks of hurt, sadness, and anger they can't seem to get rid of.""But then why is Dylan--I mean, bullies--so mean?""Remember in the airport when you wanted someone to carry your luggage for you?" asked Dad. "Well, we can get so tired of dragging our life luggage around by ourselves that we try to push our rocks onto others.""I try to be nice to Dylan, but when I do, he just gets meaner! Yesterday I asked if he wanted some help, and he called me a--well, it wasn't very nice." "Some people haven't been shown how to be kind," said Dad. "Dylan is probably afraid of looking weak. He probably feels stronger when he acts mean."James looked down. "Dad, sometimes when Dylan is mean, I just want to get back at him by making him feel bad too."Dad nodded. "I know a lot of adults who hurt others back instead of learning how to love them better. Two bullies won't change anything." Dad squeezed James's shoulder. "I'll call the school when we get back and tell them what's happening with Dylan. In the meantime, you can give your anger and hurt to--" "I know!" James interrupted. "My luggage carrier!" Dad nodded and gave James a high five. "You know, Dad," said James, "Dylan probably doesn't know that Jesus wants to be his luggage carrier too." "You might be right," Dad said as the plane took off. "He needs someone to tell him--and to pray for him too. He also needs to see God's love in action--someone who will continue to show him kindness, even though he's mean in return. Maybe someday, with prayer and persistence, that will change."Just then, something in the compartment above their heads shifted with a loud THUD! A woman in the row behind them gasped. "What was that?"James tried to swallow his laugh. "Probably the rock from our backyard!" –Kelly CarlsonHow About You?Do you ever want to hurt someone who is hurting you? It's natural to want revenge, but that's not what Jesus wants you to do. If you're being bullied or hurt by someone, it's important to tell a trusted adult who can help with the situation. But don't let your hurt and anger take over--give your burden to Jesus, and trust Him to help you respond to that person with His love.Today's Key Verse:Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (NIV) (Matthew 5:44)Today's Key Thought:Love those who hurt you

Bible Reading: Matthew 10:29-31; 25:31-40The cold winter wind bit at Maryam's nose and ears as she and her mother were shopping downtown. "Can we stop at the pet store and get some birdseed?" asked Maryam. Mom agreed, and they headed for the store. As they passed an alley, they saw a man sleeping there, huddled against a wall. He was shivering in a shabby coat, his hands bare and his toes poking out from his shoes. Maryam grabbed her mother by the hand and quickly pulled her past the alley. "What's wrong?" asked Mom."That man made me nervous," said Maryam. "Why is he dressed like that? And why is he sleeping on the street on such a cold day?""He must be homeless," said Mom."We talked about homeless people at school," Maryam said as they went into the pet store. "But I didn't think there were any in small towns like ours."After buying a bag of birdseed, Maryam and her mother started back to the car. As they passed the alley, they saw that the man was gone. Mom looked sad. "I hope he's okay." When they got home, Maryam filled the family's backyard feeder with birdseed. Then she went inside and rubbed the cold from her tingling fingers. She joined her mother at the window, and they watched birds swoop down to the feeder. "I'm glad we can put out seeds for them," Maryam said. "It's so cold, and it's hard for them to find food. They might die without us." Maryam smiled as she watched the birds flutter around the feeder and peck at the seeds. "You know what? Some verses I read in my Bible this morning said God knows about every sparrow that falls. He cares about birds.""Yes," said Mom. "And He cares about people much more than birds. People are so valuable to Him that Jesus became one of us so we could be saved from sin and live with Him forever."Maryam stared out at the snowy backyard, thinking of the man they'd seen. "We found a way to help the birds through the cold winter. Maybe we could find a way to help homeless people too." "I'm sure we can," Mom said. "Let's come up with some ideas." –Daryl B. Knauer How About You?Do you know of someone who's in need? In today's Key Verse, Jesus tells Christians that doing something for someone in need is the same as doing it for Him. Think about what you could do. Perhaps you could donate food, money, or even your time to your church or another organization that helps people. Ask God to show you how you can share His love by helping those in need. Today's Key Verse:Truly I [Jesus] tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (NIV) (Matthew 25:40)Today's Key Thought:Help those in need
Join Lisa and Laura as they continue a four-part series on the Feminine Genius. There are four components in the feminine genius: receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity. Each week, through the writings of Saint Edith Stein, personal stories, and the Word of God, Lisa and Laura will unpack one of these components. This is week three, and we are diving into generosity! Sounds lovely enough, but the reality is that this call to generosity is countercultural, and not as easy as we'd like to believe. Why should women buy into generosity, and what are its obstacles? You'll have to tune in to find out. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Malachi 3:10–11: Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. How to Find Hope When You're Hopeless Genesis 15:1-4 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” 2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” (NIV) Romans 4:18 Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” (NLT) Romans 4:19-21 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. (ESV) Romans 4:20 Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. (NIV) Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (NIV) Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (NIV) Psalms 27:13-14 I remain confident of this, I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Bible Reading: Matthew 5:13-16; Luke 8:16; John 5:24"Help! It's not working! Troooooy!" Troy stepped into the kitchen to see his little sister's hands covered in purple glue. "Crafting again, Emmy? What are you trying to do?" Emma blew a curl off her forehead in frustration. "I'm trying to make slime! I have glue, water, and baking soda. Look at this, it's just a sticky mess! Not slimy at all." "You forgot the activator." Troy pointed to step four of the recipe. "You need contact lens solution--I'll get you some of mine." "What does an activator do?" Emma asked when Troy returned with the missing ingredient. "An activator reacts with the rest of your ingredients and transforms them into something new--in this case, slime! Slime happens when you mix the liquid substance in your glue with the boric acid in an activator. This fun transformation is called cross-linking." Troy added the activator to his sister's bowl and watched her stir it in. "It's so slimy!" Emma held her slime in front of Troy's face with a grin. "Thanks for helping me!" "No problem, sis. Hey, did you know that you helped me?" "I did?" Emma poked her slime. "How?""Before you called for help, I was thinking about some friends of mine. They don't know Jesus and have started doing some stuff that's not good for them. Instead of talking to them about it, I just stayed away from them. But God used your slime project to remind me that I should do something different.""What's that?" Emma asked. "Since I have God's Spirit in me, I can be an activator to those around me who are in darkness. I have His light, and I need to shine it to others. I don't have to participate in the wrong things my friends are doing, but I can choose to show them a better way. I can tell my friends about a different kind of cross-linking: Jesus died on the cross and rose again so we could cross over from death to life and be transformed!" Emma raised her slime in the air. "Activators make everything better!" –Savannah ColemanHow About You?Are you allowing God to use you as an activator to those He has placed in your life? Jesus said that those who trust in Him are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. If we hide the light of Jesus within us, how will those who are lost come to know Him? Trust God for courage to be an activator for Him and shine His light to those around you.Today's Key Verse:In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (NIV) (Matthew 5:16)Today's Key Thought:Be an activator in the world
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:33; 13:44-46"Well, buddy, tomorrow's your last day of vacation with your grandpa. What would you like to do?" Grandpa asked Everett as they sat on the porch together.Everett patted Grandpa's dog, Bexley, while he thought. "I know!" he exclaimed. "Let's get some ice cream. You know, Grandpa--the one with jellybeans in it.""That's certainly special," Grandpa replied. "I haven't seen that in a long time. But we'll try to find it."The next afternoon, after Everett and Grandpa returned from a fishing trip, they set out to search for the special treat. The ice cream shop in town didn't have it. They asked at a shop in the mall, but it no longer served that dessert. As the two returned to Grandpa's truck, Everett said, "Grandpa, I really don't want to give up. Can we please keep trying?" Grandpa smiled. "We're not quitting, buddy. This is important! We'll keep on looking."Finally, Grandpa suggested they check at the grocery store. There in the frozen food aisle, Everett located his favorite flavor of ice cream filled with colorful jellybeans."We did it!" Everett cried. When they got home, Grandpa served them each a bowl of the sweet treat on the porch while Bexley sat between them."Our adventure to find this ice cream reminds me of a Bible story," Grandpa said. "The Bible compares the kingdom of heaven to a hidden treasure and a fine pearl. In the story Jesus tells, the men searching for these treasures sold all they had to get them.""Kind of like how we were willing to visit so many places to find special ice cream," Everett added. Grandpa nodded. "Knowing Jesus and being part of His kingdom is a treasure worth more than anything else. Since you've trusted Jesus to forgive your sins, Everett, you have found that treasure. Now you're on a journey for more than ice cream--a journey of growing to know and love Jesus more and more.""A journey? Grandpa, I think you mean a treasure hunt! Bible Reading: Matthew 5:14-16; John 3:16-21Emily licked the icing off her fingers and carefully added another snowflake sprinkle to her Christmas cookie. Christmas parties were the best! She grinned as she looked around the table at her friends. Some of them were already devouring their cookies piled with sweet decorations. "All right, kids! While you finish decorating your cookies, I have a special story to tell you," said Emily's mom. One of the other moms started passing around oranges while Emily's mom answered a question. "No, they aren't to eat just yet. We have to do something with them first! I was looking up different Christmas traditions from other countries and found this really cool one from Germany in the 1700s."The children now each had a candle, four toothpicks, dried fruit, and a red ribbon next to their oranges. "This is what they did," Emily's mom said, holding up an orange. "The orange stands for the world. God loved our world so much that He sent His Son to save us. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price of our sins and then rose from the dead so we could have eternal life. That's what the red ribbon stands for--the blood of Jesus. Take your ribbon and glue it around your orange." "What are the toothpicks for?" Emily asked curiously. "We put the four toothpicks in our orange pointing different directions for north, south, east, and west," her mom explained. "Jesus wants us to spread the good news that He saves all over the world! The dried fruit go on the ends to remind us that when Jesus is our Savior we have the fruit of the Spirit. What are they?" Some of the kids murmured, "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.""Is the candle for 'this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine'?" Wyatt sang with his eyes sparkling. "How did you know, Wyatt? Yes, we're all going to place our candle inside the top of our orange and the grown-ups will light them. This thing you created is called a Christingle, and it's a symbol of Christ's light in us. If you know Jesus as your Savior, you are the light of the world. Bible Reading: Luke 10:38-42Jade squeezed her new teddy bear tight as she ran to the living room. She waded through piles of wrapping paper to find the family Bible on the coffee table. "Momma," she said as she walked into the kitchen and found her mother rolling out pie dough on the counter. "We almost forgot to read the Christmas story! We always read it on Christmas after we open our presents.""I didn't forget, Jade. We just don't have time this year," Mom said. "I need to finish making the pecan pie we're taking to Grandma's and shovel the driveway so we can get the car out of the garage, and we need to leave in forty-five minutes or we'll be late." Mom punctuated her list with a sigh. "Maybe we can read it tomorrow instead."Defeated, Jade walked back to the living room. She plopped down in the crumpled wrapping paper and looked at her teddy bear."What should I name you?" Jade asked the stuffed animal as she touched the pink bow on the bear's head. "I know," she said, "Martha!"Jade furrowed her brow. She thought about the story of Mary and Martha she learned in Sunday school and realized Martha sounded a lot like her mom.Jade returned to the kitchen. "I think you're being Martha," she timidly told her mom as she sat down at the counter."Martha?" Mom asked. "Who is Martha?""In the Bible, Jesus visits two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha spent so much time cleaning and cooking that she didn't get to spend any time with Jesus. But Mary decided spending time with Jesus was more important than anything else." Jade looked down at the floor. "I think you're letting Christmas be more important than spending time with Jesus."Mom's face softened. "Thank you, Jade. You're absolutely right. I got caught up in all the work that goes along with the holiday. Even good things, like making a pie for family, can be bad when they keep us from taking time to rest with Jesus so He can refresh our souls and remind us of His love."Mom put down the rolling pin and smiled at Jade. "Come on, little Mary. Let's go read the Christmas story by the tree. Grandma won't mind if we're a little late." –Nicole KraayenbrinkHow About You?Are you feeling stressed or overwhelmed this Christmas season by all the presents to wrap or family parties to attend? Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:1-2, 8-10Malachi and Nevaeh watched their toy robots march around the room. Malachi's was made of clear plastic, and they could see working parts and flashing lights inside the robot's body. "My robot looks better than yours," said Nevaeh. "It's nice and shiny, and you can't see all the ugly parts inside." "Well, robots aren't meant to look good," said Malachi. "They're meant to do cool stuff! Mine can probably go faster than yours. Let's race them upstairs."The kids were just about to begin the robot race when there was a loud clap of thunder and the lights went out. "What happened?" asked Nevaeh. "It must be the storm," said Malachi. "Let's go downstairs." They headed toward the stairs, but it was dark, and they had to feel their way along the wall. "Wait a minute!" said Malachi, and he flipped on his robot. The lights began to flash, and soon the kids were downstairs in the living room, guided by the light from the robot.Soon car lights appeared in the driveway, and then Mom and Dad followed the beams of their cell phones into the living room. "You're home!" exclaimed Nevaeh. "It was spooky in the dark!""My robot helped though," said Malachi. He proudly demonstrated how his robot had saved the day. "Nevaeh was bragging about her shiny robot, but it was my see-through one that gave us light." "Well, mine still looks better," insisted Nevaeh.Dad laughed. "Your robots remind me of Christians," he said as Mom went to find some candles. "Can you guess why?""Hmm. I know!" said Malachi. "Christians are supposed to be lights in the world, and my robot is like that." He frowned. "Nevaeh's isn't, though.""No, but hers illustrates a different way Christians can be," Dad said. "Sometimes we hide the light of Jesus because we're more concerned with how we appear to others. Jesus is our light, and His light shines through us as we show His love to the world with the help of the Holy Spirit."Neveah tilted her head. "So, just like we saw the light through Malachi's robot, the world should see Jesus through us." She then looked at her brother and said, "But I bet mine is still faster.""It's on!" exclaimed Malachi as he took his robot and bolted upstairs for a rematch. –Joyce R. Bible Reading: Matthew 4:18-22Ruben sighed. He wished a fish would take the bait on his hook. At last the bobber began to jiggle. "I've finally got a bite!" Ruben jerked the pole quickly, but there was no fish, and most of the bait was gone. "That must be the big one that got away," Grandpa said with a chuckle as he handed Ruben a fresh worm to put on the hook. "Don't give up. Try again."A little later, Ruben pulled up his line again. "I got one this time!" He took a fish off the hook and put it in the pail of water."You sure did!" said Grandpa. "Let's see how many more we can catch."After Ruben and Grandpa caught several more fish, Grandpa put the oars in place and rowed for shore. "Jesus talked to His disciples about fishing," Grandpa said as he pulled on the oars. "Some of them fished for a living, so they understood fish talk. Do you remember what Jesus said they should do?""He told them to fish for people." Ruben grinned. "But how do you do that, Grandpa? People don't eat worms." Grandpa laughed. "That's true. So you need to offer them a different kind of food--spiritual food. You offer them the Bread of Life. That's what Jesus called Himself, remember? He's the only one who can satisfy our souls and give us true life."Ruben thought about that for a moment. "People don't always bite though." "No, they don't," said Grandpa. "Some don't want to hear about Jesus at all. Others are like fish that just nibble--they're curious at first, but lose interest after a while. But…" Grandpa's eyes sparkled like the water around the boat. "Other people are like the fish we caught. They want to know all they can and eventually decide to trust Jesus as their Savior." He pointed to the fish in the bucket. "We kept on fishing even though they weren't biting at first, right? And it paid off. We need to keep fishing for people too."Ruben grinned as he admired the fish they had caught. "So even when it seems like they're not biting, we have to keep telling people about Jesus." –Carolyn E. His grandparents were up front, and everyone seemed to want to talk to them the most.Uncle Rob sat down beside him. "How are you doing, Willy?"Willy turned and looked at his uncle. His eyes were shiny. "I want to go home." He covered his mouth with a hand. "Is it bad to say that? I don't want to seem mean or immature, I just don't want to be here. I don't want another person to tell me Aunt Tricia is happier in heaven than she would be here."Uncle Rob nodded slowly. "I think most nine-year-old boys would rather be at home than at a gathering like this," he said. "And I understand what you're saying. We know that your aunt is happy with Jesus, but we also miss having her here with us. We wish she could have stuck around a little longer."Willy's eyes widened. His uncle knew what he was talking about and didn't think he was wrong for saying it. "I know heaven is a good place, but Aunt Tricia was happy here too."Uncle Rob rubbed the top of Willy's head. "Even though we know your aunt is happy with Jesus in heaven, it's okay to be sad. Death is a sad thing, and Jesus understands our need to mourn those we love. Bible Reading: Matthew 5:14-16; Philippians 2:14-15"Mom's calling," Selah said as she and her sister played with neighbor kids in the common area of their apartment complex. "It must be time for dinner already," said Alice. The girls told their friends goodbye and hurried to their apartment."Guess what!" said Mom as they talked about their day. "I got a job offer."Dad grinned. "Let me guess--someone asked you to babysit their kids."Mom laughed. "You're right. Melissa, in apartment three, asked if I'd like to watch Anya and Jaxton when she goes back to work on Mondays and Fridays."Selah looked surprised. "Dad, how did you know that was what someone wanted Mom to do?""Well, it's not the first time it's happened," said Dad. "The Petersons wanted Mom to take care of their son one weekend when they had to be away, remember? And a few weeks ago, the librarian at your school asked Mom to babysit for a couple of days."Alice looked puzzled. "That's so weird. It's not like Mom put flyers around town saying she'd babysit. Why do people keep asking her?""Well," said Mom, "they know I'm a stay-at-home mom, so maybe they figure I'd like to earn a little money. And I think another reason they ask me is because of you guys.""Us?" said Selah. "I don't get it."Mom smiled. "I think they look at you and say to themselves, 'Those are nice kids! I could trust my children to be in that home. I'll see if their mother would like to work for me.'"Alice grinned. "We're just such angels," she joked.Dad laughed. "Not quite. I've seen your halos slip off and hit the floor quite a few times. You're not angels, but you are lights. The Bible says Christians are supposed to be lights in a dark world, and I've seen both of you shine the light of Jesus to others in how you treat them. Because we know Jesus, we are God's children and have His love in our hearts. When we let His love shine through our words and actions, people will notice that we're different and hopefully be pointed to Him.""So thanks, girls, for being lights to our neighbors," said Mom. Bible Reading: Matthew 18:12-14"Frank! Frank, come here, boy!" Zebb stepped back into the house and closed the sliding door with a sigh. "I think he ran away again. I've called him and called him, and he still hasn't come!"Mom looked up from her computer and frowned. "Oh no. Dad must have forgotten to put his invisible fence collar back on after his bath." Zebb was looking out the window anxiously and ringing his hands together, so Mom closed her laptop and gave him an encouraging smile. "Why don't you put your boots on and we'll go look for him before dinner."As mom drove the car slowly around their neighborhood, Zebb looked out the window. "I don't understand why he always wants to run away. Doesn't he know how much we love him?""He knows," Mom assured him. "Frank is just a dog who likes to run."After thirty minutes of searching, Zebb was blinking back tears. Mom reached over and squeezed his hand. "You know what I always think of when Frank runs away and we have to go search for him?""What?" Zebb asked, swiping at tears with the back of his hand."I think of a parable Jesus told in the Bible about a shepherd who goes after one lost sheep. He drops everything to go and save the sheep, even leaving ninety-nine others behind to go search! And when he finds the sheep, he isn't angry. The shepherd rejoices! That's how God reacts when His children are found.""I like that story," Zebb said. "It's nice to think that Jesus would search for me like I search for Frank."Mom nodded. "Jesus is our Good Shepherd who came to earth and died to rescue us from sin. He loves us and will always come find us when we wander off."As they continued searching for Frank, Zebb thought about God's love for him and how big it was. He also prayed that God would keep Frank safe, wherever he was.A few minutes later Mom's phone rang. "Hello?" she said. "Oh, that's wonderful news, thank you. We'll be right there!" Bible Reading: Matthew 25:35-40Hearing his mom scream, Jeffery dropped his game controller and ran to the kitchen. He found her with a cabinet's contents spread on the counter before her. "Mom, what's wrong?" "Oh, Jeffery, I didn't mean to scare you. Your mother is simply losing her mind. I know I bought a box of chocolate chip cookies last week. Now, when I want one, I can't find them. They've got to be here somewhere," Mom said as she started emptying another cabinet.Jeffery bit his lip. "Mom, I took them," he confessed."You? Jeffery, you don't like chocolate chip cookies! I seriously doubt you ate a whole box of them. Now your dad, he could eat a whole box. Maybe that's where they went.""No, Mom," Jeffery repeated, "I took them. You're right, I don't like them, but Russ does.""Russ from school?" asked Mom as she sat down at the table. "How did Russ get our cookies?" "Remember when I told you about Russ's family? It's just his little brother and his mom, he doesn't have a dad. Well, Russ told me that his mom works two jobs but there's still not any extra money for snacks. At snack time at school, Russ would act as if he didn't want a snack and just read. But, Mom, looking at him while I ate made my snack taste lousy," said Jeffery with a grimace. "So, I started putting two snacks in my bag and offered one to Russ. I'm sorry I took your cookies without asking.""Jeffery," Mom said as she stood and gave him a hug, "I don't care about that. What you did for Russ was a wonderful thing. In fact, the Bible says that when we share our food with those who are hungry, it's as if we shared with Jesus.""For real?" asked Jeffery."For real. Jesus loves us all so much that He gave His life to save us. When we care about others the way He does and make sacrifices for them, He counts our loving actions as being done for Him." Mom smiled. "You know, I really do want a chocolate chip cookie. Come with me to the store so you can pick out snacks that both you and Russ would like," she said with a wink. –Phyllis JohnsonHow About You?Have you done something kind for someone in need? Maybe you helped serve food to the homeless or invited the new kid at school to play with you. Jesus tells us in the Bible that when we do kind and generous things for others, we do them for Him. Think of all the good things the Lord has done for you. Then look for ways to give to Jesus today by showing someone His kindness and generosity.Today's Key Verse:Truly I [Jesus] tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Bible Reading: Matthew 25:31-40"Are you ready to go, Elizabeth?" asked Mom. Elizabeth frowned. They were going to visit Mom's grandma, who had Alzheimer's disease."I'm not sure why we visit every week," murmured Elizabeth as they started toward the door. "Last week she didn't even remember my name.""No, but Grammy always enjoys seeing you," said Mom. Elizabeth doubted that. Visits to Grammy always seemed awkward and sad.A cry came from the baby's room upstairs. "Sounds like Simon needs a bottle," said Dad, putting his tablet down. "I'll get it! You two have a good visit.""Okay," said Mom, and she and Elizabeth went on out to the car. "Elizabeth, I was just thinking about how much I appreciate your help with Simon," Mom said as they pulled out of the driveway. "You seem to really enjoy feeding him, playing with him, and holding him when he cries."Elizabeth grinned. "I do, Mom. He's such a sweet baby, and I love him so much!""Me too," said Mom. "But do you think Simon will remember that you fed him or took care of him at all a year from now? He probably doesn't even realize how much you do for him now, and he's too young to understand who you are.""Well, you still need to take care of him, so I'm doing it for you too," said Elizabeth. "I'm happy to help. And when he's older, he will know who I am." Mom nodded. "Just like Simon, Grammy needs someone to care for her too, even though she can't fully appreciate all we do for her or even remember our names sometimes. But Jesus still loves her and promises to take care of her, and one way He does that is through us. When we show her the same love and care He does, we're not just doing it for Grammy--we're doing it for God too."Elizabeth sighed. "You're right. It's just hard to visit her sometimes when she won't even remember we came.""I know, but she'll know somebody cares right now," said Mom gently. "It will help her today." She smiled. "She may not remember, but God will. And one day, when Jesus gives Grammy a new, perfect body, I'm sure she'll remember too." –Mike DizeHow About You?Are you willing to help people who will probably forget all the good things you do? God won't forget. Jesus says that the things you do to show love and care to others are done for Him, whether anyone else remembers or not. Be willing to help in whatever way you can, even if you don't think it will make a difference. Do it for the Lord, and trust Him to use your good deeds to show people His love.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus said,] "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Brian Priebe | Executive Pastor | May 5, 2024 Are you praying for things that only God can do? Mark 8:27-29a (NIV) Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” John 5:16-18 (NIV) John 8:54-59 (NIV) John 10:30-33 (NIV) John 20:26-29(NIV) Matthew 16:16 (NIV) CS Lewis’ Trilema from Mere Christianity:“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him (Jesus): I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Acts 12:15-16 (NIV) Psalm 1:2-3 (NIV) Are you praying for things that only God can do?Is your faith growing? Is loving others your priority? Falling in love is easy… all you need is a pulse. Staying in love is hard. That takes intentionality and work. Into the difficulty and darkness that is and was difficult relationships, Jesus speaks words of hope and lays out the foundation for enduring love. We all expect the ideal… We end up with an ordeal and because our idea of love is so distorted, We think the answer is a new deal.Truth: You are actually powerless to love your spouse the way you promised you would, the way they dreamed you would and the way God designed that you should. The Concept of the One-Eighty: The only way marriage works, longterm, is to both be headed toward each other. There is a major difference between Falling in love vs Staying in love. Here is the Tension in marriage... We are equipped to fall in love, but we are not equipped to stay in love.Where's the Hope?• John 13:34 (NIV)• Matthew 5:46 (NLT)The foundation of staying in love is making love………a verb.Need Prayer?
Walking With Ghosts: Week 2Duane Calvin – Raleigh Campus PastorDescription:Our current grief has no comparison to our future glory. While we may not always see Jesus in our grief, He is with us if we just look for Him. In week two, Duane Calvin shares about the ghost of grief. Message Notes: Jesus shows up in our grief. The ghost of grief is one that shows up in just about every area of our lives. John 20:11-14 (NIV)Looking for Jesus in our grieving means that even in the midst of our loss we look for Him to show us the way to hope. Followers of Christ never grieve alone. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (NIV)Psalms 34:18 (NIV)Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)Matthew 28 (NIV)As Christians we grieve differently because we know Christ, and it means that we never have to grieve alone. John 20:15-16 (NIV)Jesus comforts us in our grief. Our current grief has no comparison to our future glory. John 20:17-18 (NIV)Allow yourself to grieve and, in your grieving, look for Jesus. Remember that you should never grieve alone, and you don't have to allow the ghost of grief to dictate your current condition.
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, and uneasiness. Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 4:12-16Malik was having a difficult day. While he was in the locker room, he overheard some boys laughing because he had been friendly to a new student who was very awkward. Then at lunchtime, some other boys told him Christians weren't allowed to sit at their table. The way they said "Christians" made it sound like something bad.In math class, something good finally happened. Mrs. Brown announced that the regional math competition would be held the next week. "The students who will represent our school are Amy, Rita, Byron, and Malik," she said. "They'll be staying at the Grand Hotel while they're at the competition. The winning team will get a trophy and go to the state competition next month.""Wow! That's a cool place to stay. It's got a huge swimming pool and really fancy rooms," said one of the students. "I wish I could go!""Well, I can assure you that earning the right to go to the math competition was not easy," said Mrs. Brown. "These students have shown that they're willing to put in the necessary effort to get ready for the competition and do well in it."When Malik arrived home, he told his mom about his day. "Some of the kids are jealous because I get to go to the competition," he said with a grin. Then he sighed. "But other kids still make fun of me for being a Christian." Mom looked at him. "Tell me--did you always feel like studying your math?"Malik shook his head. "Of course not.""But you studied because you had your mind set on going to the math competition. Now your efforts are being rewarded." Mom smiled. "As Christians, we will one day be rewarded too. You earned your place in the math competition, but there's nothing any of us could do to earn our place in heaven. Jesus earned it for us by dying for our sins so we could enjoy the reward of eternal life with Him. But the Bible warns us that the Christian life isn't easy--we'll experience hardship in our lives just like Jesus did. But we can persevere as we keep our focus on Him, knowing our reward will be greater than anything we can imagine." –Sam L. SullivanHow About You?Do other kids make fun of you for being a Christian? The Bible tells us that even though following Jesus isn't easy, we can rejoice when we suffer for Jesus because it shows that we belong to Him and will share in the eternal reward He earned for us on the cross. Look to Him for the strength you need to persevere, knowing that He is with you and that your reward will be great.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus said,] "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me." This week, we're talking to two women who grew up checking off the boxes to be the best Christians they could possibly be, and who would learn later in life would come to know a God who was more concerned with their hearts than with their behaviors. Comedian Anita Renfroe grew up in a church that didn't consider laughter to be appropriate within its walls. As a person who always had something funny running through her head, it took her years to realize that joy, which bubbles over into laughter, is actually something that pleases the heart of God. Writer and teacher Hollylu Jostes also grew up in an environment that had very specific notions on what it meant to be a “good Christian.” Basically playing a role that ran counterintuitive to who she was as a person, she struggled to find her authentic self until she learned to know the God who loved her madly, who gave her the freedom to be exactly who she was meant to be. He is the only rational choice, and then everything falls under that. And once that is in the right place, then you are free to be who God created you to be.” - Hollylu Jostes “I think it's important to connect with God daily because He is the fuel. He is what gets us through our day. He's what gives our day meaning and He's what infuses our day with joy. Bible Reading: Proverbs 4:10-15, 18-19; Matthew 7:13-14"This is so much fun!" exclaimed Scarlett as she tramped along through the snow with the other kids from her church."Yeah," said Ada. "This is a cool place to have a winter retreat."Soon they came to a fork in the path. The kids ahead of them took the path to the right. "Wait!" called Scarlett. "Mr. Bailey said to turn left at each fork, and then we'll end up back at camp."The other campers hesitated. "Yeah, but look! This path on the right is full of footprints. There aren't as many in the path to the left," argued one of the boys. "I think we should take the one everybody else used." Most of the kids agreed, and they all continued down the well-trodden path.Scarlett and Ada didn't know what to do. "Mr. Bailey said to take the fork to the left," said Ada. "I think we should do that.""Me too," said Scarlett. "Let's at least take it for a little ways. If we don't get back to camp soon, we can turn around and follow the other kids." Ada nodded, and they started off.To the girls' delight, it wasn't long before they arrived back at camp. They explained to Mr. Bailey why the other campers weren't with them. He shook his head. "They'll come to a dead end and have to turn around. I'll send someone out on a snowmobile just to make sure they're all right."During camp devotions that evening, Mr. Bailey grinned at the group. "We have some tired campers tonight," he said. "Most of you took a longer hike than you planned because you didn't follow the directions you were given. Instead, you followed the path many others had taken." He opened his Bible. "As many of you learned today, the right path is not always the popular one. God's Word tells us that many people choose the wrong path in life. We might be tempted to follow our own selfish desires thinking it will make us happy, but the Bible says that well-worn path only leads to destruction. There's only one way to have true joy and peace, and that's Jesus. When we trust in Him, He walks with us along the path that leads to eternal life. Choose to follow Him, not the crowd." – Mary Rose PearsonHow About You?Which path have you chosen to follow? Are you walking with Jesus down the path that leads to eternal life? Or are you going your own way? Though the world may tell us we can find our own way to happiness, the Bible says that path only leads to a dead end. When Good Things Become God: Reputation | December 10, 2023Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor Proverbs 22:1 (NIV)A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Ecclesiastes 7:1 (NIV)A good name is better than fine perfume… 1 Timothy 3:7 (NIV)He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. Galatians 1:10 (NIV)Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 2:11-13 (NIV) Matthew 4:5-7 (NIV) Matthew 3:16-17 (NIV)As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 6:1 (NIV)“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” Can I SAY NO?Do I MANAGE PERCEPTIONS? Do I live a HIDDEN or DOUBLE LIFE? Am I PREOCCUPIED with OPINIONS? Can I GIVE and RECEIVE FEEDBACK? Hebrews 4:13-16 (NIV)Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. 1 Peter 3:18 (NIV)For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. Reflection Questions:Read Galatians 1:10. How in your life have you seen the approval of people become more important than the approval of God?Read Mathew 6:1. How can doing “works of righteousness” (good things) for God become more for people than for God? Have you ever experienced this in your life? Explain. How can we know if our focus is on God or on the approval of people? How can an inability to say “No” to people be evidence of the idolatry of approval/reputation? What is the cost long term to us if we constantly try to please people? Why does a reluctance to give or receive feedback point to the idol of reputation/approval?How do your respond to the criticism of others? Does it create insecurity and challenge your self worth? ExplainDo you ever find yourself preoccupied with what others think about you? (real or perceived?) Share some personal examples. Why is living a double/hidden life evidence of approval addiction? What is the solution? How have you applied your solution personally in your life? What can do practically to break the addiction of approval? How can we practically place the weight of our identity in what Jesus says is true about us? What does it mean that our identity in Jesus is RECEIVED and NOT ACHIEVED? How does that truth affect your thinking and response to approval? Start to Finish Week 1 - Is Marriage Still Important? Ben Foote (Teaching Pastor - Flatirons Community Church)Description:These days it's easy to wonder if marriage still is (or ever was) all that important. In week one of the series, Ben Foote (Teaching Pastor of Flatirons Community Church) takes a look at what Jesus has to say about marriage and brings back the why for those of us who may have forgotten.—Message Notes: Life is not a sprint. We need to focus on living a godly life From Start to Finish. Christianity helps us for the long haul in youth, singleness, marriage, parenting and aging. Why is marriage so important? Jesus directly addresses marriage and divorce.Matthew 19:1-2 (NIV)Matthew 19:3 (NIV)In Jesus' time, there were basically two sides of the divorce debate. 1. God only allows divorce in the case of infidelity. 2. God allows divorce for any and every reason. The culture in Jesus' time sounded something like this about marriage:Marriage is a contract that can be easily broken whenever men don't feel served or pleased by it anymore.Jesus responds to the Pharisees trying to trap Him on the issue of divorce.Matthew 19:4-6 (NIV)Jesus' answer points to two different Scriptures on why marriage is important.Genesis 1:27 (ESV)Genesis 2:24 (BSB)God unites the man and woman into ONE FLESH, one spiritually inseparable unit, to reflect God's goodness to the world around us.Why is marriage so important? Jesus says marriage is NOT a contract but a COVENANT.Covenant: A spiritually-binding oath between God and His people. The common view of marriage in Jesus time:Marriage is a contract that can be easily broken whenever men don't feel served or pleased by it anymore.Jesus' view of marriage:Marriage is a covenant that cannot be broken without doing a lot of damage because marriage is a covenant designed to show the world what God looks like.Marriage is uniquely designed to show the world what God's never-ending, never-quitting love and commitment look like.Married people should be able to swap their names for the end of the verse in Romans 8:38-39.“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate (name) from the love of (spouse's name).”Marriage is designed to show the world what God's never-ending, never-quitting love and commitment look like. —Helpful Links:For family resources, visit https://gethope.net/familyministry/#resources If you're new to Hope or looking to get connected, click here: https://gethope.net/next/If you'd like to receive regular updates on what's happening around Hope, subscribe to our newsletter here: https://gethope.net/enews/Subscribe to Family Conversations for weekly prompts and resources: https://touchpoint.gethope.net/OnePageReg/2451To support this ministry financially to help us continue to love people where they are and encourage them to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, click here: https://gethope.net/give/Subscribe to our channel: https://bit.ly/2XBbBxqStay Connected with Hope:Website: https://gethope.net/Hope Community Church Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gethopecommunitychurch Hope Community Church Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/get_hope/Hope Community Church Twitter: https://twitter.com/get_hopeHope Community Church YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/HopeCommunityChurchSubscribe to Our Podcast - Hope In Real Life YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HopeInRealLifeHope In Real Life Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7eifzI0r9uY8rUaBMGs7q1Hope In Real Life Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hope-in-real-life-with-jason-gore/id1691710678?uo=4
Bible Reading: 1 Peter 3:8-11Cleo walked around the room collecting assignments from her classmates. As she reached the end of the last row, she saw Kara staring back at her from the front, waiting. When she reached Kara, Cleo held her hand out, expecting Kara to hand over her assignment. Instead, Kara threw the sheet on the ground for her to pick up. Stunned, Cleo felt her face warming up. Soft laughter rippled through the air like tiny waves in the ocean, quiet and discreet. She didn't know what else to do except bend down and scoop the paper off the ground. After handing the assignments to her teacher, Cleo made the long trek back to her desk while she felt the room staring at her.Pathetic, she thought. I should have just left the paper on the ground. Better yet, I should have ripped it into shreds! She opened up her notebook to bury her face in. But she quickly noticed something was different. Oh, this isn't my math notebook, she thought. This is my prayer journal. She furrowed her brow as she flipped through the pages. I must've brought this one by accident. There, in rich gold ink, was a verse she had memorized at summer camp: Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:17–18. There it was, written like the golden rule. Cleo couldn't help but think it wasn't a coincidence she had brought the wrong notebook. Suddenly, she felt peace rush over her like still water. She kind of regretted not taking revenge on Kara because she had embarrassed her. But isn't that what it meant to be a follower of Jesus--to be humble in the face of challenges? To repay evil with good? When Jesus died on the cross, He died for all our sins, including Kara's, Cleo thought. If He can forgive me, I can forgive Kara. Taking revenge on Kara would've made Cleo feel good, and it surely would've saved face. But then Kara wouldn't get to experience what a true follower of Jesus looks like.-Toria KeyesHow About You?Do you have the urge to pay someone back for how they wronged you? Maybe you want to hit your brother back when he hits you or steal your classmate's pencil after they stole your pen and lied about it. Isn't that what they deserve? It may seem like it, but God helps us choose to love instead. He could have given us what we deserve for sinning, but instead Jesus died for us. Instead of revenge, we can choose peace and repay evil with good.Today's Key Verse:Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (NIV) (Matthew 5:9)Today's Key Thought:Repay evil with good
Bible Reading: Matthew 13:31-33"I'm ready to make bread!" said Katie as she slipped on her apron.Mom pulled the flour down off the top shelf, then grabbed sugar, a package of yeast, and salt. "We need eggs, butter, and milk." Katie carried the items from the fridge to the kitchen table, where her mom had already set out a mixing bowl, measuring cups, and an electric mixer. After measuring flour into the bowl, Katie opened the packages of yeast and sprinkled them over the flour. "Yeast looks like tiny seeds," she observed."Yeast is a single-celled microorganism, a type of fungus," Mom explained as she stirred the pot of milk, sugar, butter, and salt on the stove. Mom taught science. She knew that kind of stuff. When the liquid was at the right temperature, they added it to the flour, along with eggs, and beat it all with the mixer. Then they added more flour, blending it in until it was too thick to stir. Next came the part Katie loved best--kneading. Sinking her hands into the gooey dough, she pushed it this way and that, pressing and folding, until it was smooth and a little stretchy. Then she put the dough into a greased bowl and covered it with a towel.Mom and Katie played a card game at the kitchen table while they waited for the bread to rise. "Do you remember what Pastor Turner said on Sunday?" Mom asked Katie."He said the gospel--the good news that Jesus came to save us and bring us into God's kingdom--is like yeast."Mom nodded. "When people tell others about Jesus and let His love be seen in their lives, the good news spreads like yeast does throughout the dough, changing people's hearts. Before long, you can see a change in how people in the community treat one another.""Speaking of changes…" Katie took the towel off the bowl of dough. "Look."The dough had doubled in size! Katie punched it to release air, shaped the dough into loaves, let it rise again, and baked it."Mmm," said Katie as she bit into a buttered slice. "Perfect!"Mom smiled. "Just like the world will be when everyone hears the good news and Jesus returns!"-Bonnie CarrHow About You?Do you ever think about how little things, like asking a friend to go to church with you, can make big changes? Bible Reading: Matthew 25:34-40; James 2:14-17"Dad, can you pass the gravy, please?" said Noelle as she plopped a heaping serving of mashed potatoes on her plate. Mashed potatoes and gravy were one of her favorite side dishes, along with pumpkin pie, which was also on the table.Dad handed her the white pitcher. "You sure do like mashed potatoes.""Yeah, I guess I do," Noelle said as she poured the creamy gravy on her potatoes."Save some for me," Dad said with a laugh.Noelle set the pitcher of gravy back on the table. "I miss Mom.""I do too," Dad said. "But we should be thankful she was able to go and help Aunt Dawn for a while after her surgery. It'd be hard for Uncle Tim to do it all by himself.""I'm glad the operation went well," said Noelle. "I love Aunt Dawn.""And you've really helped get things done while Mom is away," said Dad. "It sure is nice to have the extra help around here, just like it is for Aunt Dawn to have Mom's extra help." "It's kind of like having extra gravy for mashed potatoes," said Noelle."What do you mean?" asked Dad."Well, it's not like you have to have it--mashed potatoes would be okay if you didn't. But it makes them taste so much better. Just like Mom helping Aunt Dawn--it makes things easier even though Aunt Dawn could have managed with just Uncle Tim's help.""And you have made things better for us around here," said Dad. "We would have managed even if you hadn't worked harder, but I'm so pleased that you did." Dad smiled at Noelle. "You know, the Bible says that a willingness and desire to help others points to the fact that we belong to Jesus. Because we know Him as our Savior, we have the Holy Spirit, who fills our hearts with His love. And both you and Mom have shown that love through your actions this week."Dad got up and went into the kitchen to do the dishes, and Noelle followed."I'll help," Noelle said as she began clearing the table."Well, I'd sure like the extra help," said Dad. "And it means much more to me than a little extra gravy on mashed potatoes!"-Sharon Lee RobertsHow About You?Have you ever given extra help to someone who needed it? Bible Reading: 1 John 3:1-3Harper looked up when Mom closed her science textbook. "I think it's time for an experiment!" Mom said.Harper followed Mom into the kitchen, where Mom pulled out one of the white carnations from the vase on the kitchen table. "What's the experiment?" Harper asked."What did we just learn about today in science?" "We talked about how plants absorb water through a process called capillary action," Harper explained."Right! So now we're going to see that process in action." Mom handed Harper the flower. Following Mom's direction, Harper cut the stem of the flower at an angle. Then she filled a glass jar with water and added ten drops of red food coloring. Harper placed the flower in the water. "Now what?""Now we wait," Mom said.Harper watched the flower for a few minutes but left when nothing happened immediately. She forgot about the flower until she came down for breakfast the next morning. There, sitting on the table, was the carnation. But the carnation was no longer white. Instead, a rosy color tinged the edges of the petals. When Harper looked again at dinner, the color was even stronger. Harper checked on the flower each day for a week, watching as the red color became more defined."Well, what did you think?" Mom asked at the end of the week. "It was cool to watch the flower change color! If I hadn't known the carnation started off white, I never would have guessed the original color wasn't red!" Harper exclaimed. "The plant absorbed the water, and it changed from the inside out as it became red. It reminds me of what I learned at Bible club this week.""How so?" Mom asked."Well, Mrs. Dvorak told us that as Christians, Jesus lives in us. As His Spirit works in our hearts, we start changing from the inside out, just like the carnation. Eventually, others can see the difference more and more as we follow Jesus and show His love to others--like how I could see the red color becoming brighter with time.""I'm glad you're paying attention in Bible club and to my science lessons!" Mom grinned. "Maybe next time you'll have to be my teacher." - Olivia SummersHow About You?Do others see Jesus in you? Bible Reading: Matthew 10:29-31"But I'm so scared!" Rebecca's little sister cried."I'm sorry, Cara, but you have to go. You'd better get your shoes on. We leave in fifteen minutes," Rebecca answered. As Cara pulled on her clogs, she asked, "Rebecca, will it hurt very bad?""Well, it will hurt some. When the dentist pulls a tooth, it hurts for a little while. But the pain won't last very long," Rebecca tried to assure her sister.Tears filled Cara's eyes. "Rebecca, I'm really, really scared. Scareder than you've ever been!"Rebecca sat down on the bed. "Cara, do you want to know what you can do to help you not be so afraid?" When Cara nodded, she went on. "Whenever we're afraid, we can trust the Lord. We can pray He will help us remember that He's with us and that we can trust Him!"Cara looked up at her sister. "I thought we prayed to God for big things like when someone is really sick or dying. Are you sure He'd hear my prayer about having a little tooth pulled?""God hears every prayer," Rebecca said as she took her Bible from her desk. "Matthew 10:29-31 says, 'Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.' See, Jesus told us that God even cares for the sparrows. And you're way more important than a sparrow, Cara! God gave His own Son so you could be saved and belong to Him. He loves you and wants you to go to Him for help when you're afraid.""So God hears even the tiniest prayer?" "Yes!""All right," Cara said. "I'll pray and ask God to help me."Cara knelt down beside Rebecca's bed. "Dear God," she prayed, "please help me not be so scared when I go to the dentist. Please help it not hurt a lot. Thank you that I'm worth more than a sparrow. Amen."Just then Mom called, "Girls! It's time to go!"Cara jumped up and turned to Rebecca. "I'm so glad God cares about me!""Me too!" Rebecca answered. -Evie NewtonHow About You?Do you worry about little things? Do you ever pray about these things and wonder if God cares? He does care! Even though it may not feel like it, grief can be a source of great hope. The way that we react against what is wrong comes from a deep desire for things to be made right. Our loss may actually lead to healing and restoration. The Bible assures us that better days are coming when God Himself will wipe every tear from our eyes. “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,” it says in Revelation, “for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4) Our guests this week have walked through deep and unexpected grief and what even seemed like unfair losses. Best-selling Christian author Philip Yancey uncovered a shocking secret about his father's death while he was still in college, one that illuminated the sometimes overbearing religious convictions of his mother. Yancey shares how he dove into his family's origins and how he ultimately found healing from what he calls “toxic faith.” After nearly thirty years of marriage, author Mike Nappa lost his dear wife, Amy, to cancer. Mike turned to scripture to help him get through the day and to cope with processing his grief—and even today, he sees how grief and joy can coexist. And then one day you wake up and wonder, Is this just a learned behavior pattern that I have, or is it genuine? Am I really connecting to the God of the universe?“ - Philip Yancey “I started looking for people who were made larger by their faith.“ - Philip Yancey “Don't just give up on God because of the way God may have been presented to you. It's worth that quest to try to find who God really is and to find that God loves you. And God indeed does imagine a role for you on this earth that no one else has. That's why we were created. We were created in God's image to reflect something of God back to others.” - Philip Yancey “There's nothing that you can do to get God to love you more. No amount of spiritual calisthenics, no amount of trying to be more spiritual than everybody else—there's nothing you can do for God to love you less.” - Philip Yancey “God wants to remake us in a way that's good for us. God wants to restore us. God wants to give us a calling, a reason for being, a reason to live on this planet, and grace is the attitude that God has toward us all the time.” - Philip Yancey “I understand that God is really who He said He was, just like I thought He was before, in the moments of great joy and in the moments of great sorrow. And He is always near in the moments of great joy, and when it gets hard, He doesn't step back and run away. He'll just stand there and stay with you.” - Mike Nappa “The grief that we have is not something to be thrown aside any more than love would be thrown aside. The grief that we have is something to visit and understand and take value and take benefit from.” - Mike Nappa “I don't have to be consumed by grief. It can just be part of who I am as I also experience joy and happiness.” - Mike Nappa ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
