Full Transcript Below: Comforted in Our Loneliness by the Friend Who Never LeavesBy: Jennifer Slattery Bible Reading:I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. - John 15:15 NIV Do you ever struggle with building and maintaining friendships? Do you long for a relationship that feels so safe, you can express your deepest needs, doubts, sins, and fears? But also find yourself hiding those parts of you, for fear you’ll be rejected and shamed? In our broken world, filled with people who are as broken as us, it can be really hard to find those people able to stay by us in our hardest times and, perhaps, even when we act the ugliest. We all, at times, behave in ways we wish we hadn’t and that, sadly hurt or frustrate others. We will never reach perfection this side of heaven, but that doesn’t mean we’re destined to be alone. If you grew up in an environment where your needs for love, grace, and affection weren’t met, you may have come to believe that there’s something inherently wrong with you. Something that, if others knew or saw or experienced, would drive them away. And while I can’t speak for the people presently in your life—whether or not they have the emotional and spiritual maturity to work through conflict, confusion, and misunderstandings—who have the maturity to stay—I do know One who sees all of you, loves you fully, and has promised to never leave. Jesus is the friend mentioned in Proverbs 18:24 who sticks closer than a brother. When I consider His words in context, in John 15, I’m struck by the timing with which He spoke. This was on the night before His death, during a solemn and deeply painful Passover in which He told His disciples that they’d soon endure some of the most difficult experiences of their lives. Expulsion from their faith community, and all the support and comfort and connection that came with that. Slander and attack by those who viewed their commitment to Jesus as blasphemous, ungodly, and dangerous. And, potentially, death. Hard stuff. Times when they would desperately need to know they weren’t alone and that someone saw them, understood their pain, and walked with them in it. And yes, they had each other, praise God. But that wasn’t, and wouldn’t be enough—no matter how strong their relationships were with one another. They needed a perfect friend. They needed Jesus. And He gave Himself freely—to the point of death. But He didn’t stay dead. He rose from the grave as a powerful reminder that their hardship wouldn’t last forever. Glorious life, abundant and thriving life, was coming. And in the meantime, while they waited for their “faith to become sight” as. Scripture puts it—Jesus waited, fully present, with them. Intersecting Life & Faith: Pause to reflect on today’s verse for a moment, and hear this as the Lord speaking directly to you: “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” In other words, Jesus says, to you, I don’t view you as a servant—as someone who’s only role is to listen and obey. Rather, I see you as someone with whom I long to grow closer, and I choose to reveal Myself to you. No secrets. No games. No power plays. Nothing but loyal, tender, steady, and present love. He could’ve used numerous words—and at times He does. Child. One of His dependent and well-cared-for sheep. His beloved. But here, He calls you friend. What might this reveal regarding His heart for you? Regarding His understanding of your deepest needs for connection and acceptance? What does it reveal regarding how He wants to meet you in your present season? To grasp the depth of His message, perhaps consider the qualities you long for in a perfect friend. Someone who’s mentally present and emotionally available in your pain. Someone who sees the best in you, even when you blow it—and who always has your best in mind. No manipulation, strong arming, withdrawal, shaming, criticizing or condemning. Someone who celebrates your wins and comforts you in your losses. Most importantly, someone who remains. That, my friend, is who Jesus wants to be for you. Who Jesus is for you. Where pressure has shaped my thinking, let Your truth reshape it with peace. Where my thoughts have become scattered, bring clarity. Where tension has settled in, bring stillness. My mind can be renewed. Not by effort alone, but by returning to You. By allowing Your truth to become stronger than what I feel and clearer than what I fear. Jesus, steady my thoughts. Let me think clearly, calmly, and truthfully. Let what is unnecessary fall away, and let what is good, right, and life-giving remain. I return to You. Jesús, renueva mi mente y lléname de Tu paz hoy. It is a subtle thing, pride. It rarely announces itself. It creeps in quietly — in the way we measure ourselves against others, in the quiet satisfaction we feel when we believe we have gotten it right, in the distance we keep from those we have decided are beneath us. And all the while, we may believe we are simply being discerning, or faithful, or righteous. But God sees the posture of the heart. In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus draws a portrait of two men at prayer — and the one who goes home justified is not the one with the longer list of religious achievements. It is the one who could not even lift his eyes to heaven. The one who simply said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. That prayer, so short and so stripped of pretense, was the one that moved the heart of God. There is a freedom that comes when we stop managing our image before the Lord and simply come as we are. When we release our grip on the comparisons, the tallying, the quiet pride in how far we have come — and return to that place of open-handed dependence. It is not a place of shame. It is the very place where grace meets us. Tonight, He is not asking for your record. He is asking for your heart. Come low. Come honest. And find, as so many have before you, that it is in that humble place where the Savior draws nearest. When others seem to prosper through wrongdoing… when injustice touches your life or the world around you… it’s easy to feel anxious, frustrated, or even envious. But Psalm 37 gently redirects our hearts—away from fretting and toward trust, surrender, and patient waiting on God. Using the practice of Lectio Divina, this meditation creates space to pause, listen, and rest in the truth that God sees, God knows, and God is at work—even when His timing feels slow. This passage has been deeply personal for me. In a season when life felt unjust, God repeatedly brought me back to these words—inviting me to trust Him, to rest in Him, and to wait for Him to move in His way and in His time. If you’re walking through something that feels unfair or unresolved, this meditation is an invitation to release what you’re carrying and place it back into God’s hands.

Conner Bible Reading:“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” - Psalm 27:13 (NIV) Do you have an anchor scripture or favorite passage of the Bible that you regularly return to for comfort or encouragement? I have a few, but one of my favorites is Psalm 27. I have read and reread this psalm more times than I can count. I even handwrote the full psalm in my journal because I am a writer and writers best retain information through the physical act of writing (or typing) and reading. Regardless of how I have interacted with the text, I just can’t seem to get away from this particular passage. It’s like I somehow knew these words would need to be forever etched into my heart. Psalm 27 was written by David during one of his many flights from those who sought to take his life. Though it looked as if the deck was completely stacked against him, David determined to put his faith in the Lord for refuge and rescue. Many of the declarations he makes in this narrative are bold refutes against the temptation to despair. In verse three, he states, “though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.” He continues on in verse eight to say, “My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” Ultimately, what David desired most was intimacy and companionship with the Lord, for that really is the only place where we can obtain true and lasting comfort. David understood that his outward circumstances did not have to dictate the inward position of his heart. The goodness of God remained even if it looked like everything around him was falling apart. No matter your age, occupation, or geographic location, like David, life has likely thrown you some hard knocks. Unfortunately, disappointments and hardships are guaranteed in this fallen world. No one is immune. In fact, the Bible actually promises that we will encounter struggle. Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV). The good news is that we are not alone in our trials. The Bible affirms that God is present and helping us through our circumstances. Our Heavenly Father promises He will never leave or forsake us (Deut. 31:6), He is close to those who call upon Him (Psalm 145:18), He will draw near to us when we draw near to Him (James 4:8), and He will help us and uphold us with his righteous right hand (Isa. 41:10). You can be confident that God has not left you alone in the difficulties or challenges you are facing. Sometimes, our souls just need to be reminded of God's unmovable, unfailing love. In Psalm 27, David refuted the lie of defeat by declaring who God is, all He had already done, and the Biblical promises He has made to those who love Him. Reciting these truths and recalling times when you have personally witnessed God’s care and provision in your life helps shift your perspective from what seems to be lacking to what has been provided. In light of this fresh perspective, hope can be renewed. And it is here, in this place of confident assurance in Him, that you can look out beyond the momentary affliction you are facing and say: No matter what is going on… “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” - Psalm 27:13 (NIV) Intersecting Faith & Life: Do you have an anchor scripture you turn to again and again in times of trouble? By: Cindi McMenamin Bible Reading: Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” - Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) Do you long for something more in your life and yet constantly feel that you shouldn’t? Whether you're longing for marriage, or for more intimacy in your marriage, or for a child, or for a more fulfilling career, I'm sure you've experienced your share of these well-intentioned remarks: "At least you have a family that loves you.” "At least you have a husband." "At least you already have a child." "You may not enjoy it, but at least you have a job.” "Well, at least you're healthy." "At least you still have…” "At least you don't suffer with…” Oh, the sting of well-intentioned remarks. And, oh, the sting of those two guilt-ridden words: "At least..." So many of us settle for “at least” in our lives. And yet, since God went to such great extremes to show His love for you and me by having His only Son die on the cross for our sins, then certainly He did not intend for us to be content with the bare minimum. Yes, God's Word says we are to be thankful "in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We are also told from Scripture that "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6). But God doesn't want our gratitude and contentment to be a form of resignation (like when we say, "I guess I should be happy with this, since it's all I will ever get anyway"). Rather, God wants His children to be full of anticipation for the "more" that He is so capable of giving—to the point that we thank Him ahead of time for all that He is about to do. This God who tells us to be thankful in all things actually raises the bar when we decide to settle for less, or at least what life brings us. In the New King James Version, Ephesians 3:20 says God is able to do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” You and I often hear, think, or say the word "at least" in our lives. And yet God's Word says: "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer" (Matthew 21:22). "Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full" (John 16:24). "Without faith it is impossible to please Him" (Hebrews 11:6). Those words, my friend, come from a God who is not stingy, and who doesn't bow out after He's done the bare minimum in your life. He is, instead, the God who says, "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11). Intersecting Faith & Life: You and I have our reasons for not coming to God and pouring out our hearts. Sometimes it's because we feel guilty about asking God for something. Other times it's because we don't really believe that He would want to bless us, or we feel we don't deserve anything more from Him. When you and I say, "I don't really deserve any more than I have right now," we are actually correct in our assumption, because God doesn't give us good gifts because we deserve them. He gives us good gifts because He is good and compassionate, wanting to bless His children. Especially when we seek to be obedient and please His heart. So, what are you settling for? A dating relationship with someone you know is not right for you? A job you tolerate because you don't believe God has something better for you? A diagnosis that appears untreatable? A marriage that is just okay, but not truly glorifying God? Don't fall into the mindset of saying, "I don't believe God can or will give me anything better," or "I don't deserve more than what I already have." Instead, remember that God can do anything, and He loves to bless His children. He excels in situations that you and I think are hopeless. Don't be reluctant to pour out your heart to Him. Rather than settle for the least in your life, surrender to His best and allow for the possibility that God may want to do "immeasurably more” than all you can ask or imagine—many times with what you already have. Conner Bible Reading:“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” - Psalm 16:6 (NIV) Do you feel confined by your circumstances? Perhaps you are stuck in a job you dislike, or you can’t wait to move out of your home, town, or region. Maybe you are longing for a change within a relationship or the transition from one season of life to another. Or perhaps you are struggling with physical limitations or health challenges. Whatever your unique circumstances may be, none of us likes to feel limited. We believe “the world is our oyster” and we should have full access to all it has to offer. However, the Bible suggests a much different narrative. Throughout the Word, we see example after example of God’s people confined within boundaries. The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years, then, generations later, were exiled to Babylon. David was forced into hiding to avoid the pursuit of Saul. Tamar and Leah were “trapped” in what appeared to be loveless marriages. Paul and many of the disciples were imprisoned for their faith. New Testament or Old, there have been multitudes of followers who have struggled to see how God was working for good within the boundaries He set for them. The story of Joseph is one illustration that I have personally looked to when wrestling with my own constrictive circumstances. Joseph was the second youngest son of the patriarch Jacob. He was incredibly talented and favored by his father. During his youth, Joseph had two dreams that foretold he would be in a position of authority over his family in the future. It appeared to be a glorious prospect. However, the reality looked nothing like he imagined. Shortly after Joseph shared his prophetic vision, his brothers sold him into slavery. Once carried off from his home country, Joseph spent over a decade enslaved and imprisoned. He endured persecution, mistreatment, and was reduced to the humblest of circumstances. There was no escape outside of God’s timely release and restoration. I would imagine there were moments when Joseph really grappled with his undesirable confinement and questioned how God was at work in any of it. Yet, on the other side of the story, we can see God was indeed working behind the scenes. Joseph was eventually released from prison and became a significant leader in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. His elite role positioned him to save his family from starvation during a devastating famine. Had Joseph not been forced into those unwanted circumstances, he would not have been able to rescue his family and the generational line of the Israelite people. Even further, the man Joseph became as a result of his confinement was a miracle in itself. His once haughty heart was transformed into a spirit of endless mercy and grace. When Joseph is later reconciled to his brothers, he offers compassion rather than spite. “His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. ‘We are your slaves,’ they said. But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” - Gen. 50:18-20 (NIV). What looked like imprisonment was actually favor and redemption. There are times when God draws boundaries around each of our lives. But the truth is, those boundaries are for our good. Even if it feels uncomfortable or frustrating, know that the Lord is ordaining your steps. You are in His hands. There are riches and blessings in whatever season you find yourself in today. “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” - Ps. 16:6 (NIV) Intersecting Faith & Life: Do you feel like you are stuck or confined by a specific circumstance or season of life? If so, does looking at examples from scripture help you understand how God uses seasons of perceived confinement to grant us good gifts? Why or why not? Take some time today to reflect on past moments when you felt as if your circumstances would never change, yet ultimately a transition arrived. Then consider how those periods shaped who you are today. How can you see the fingerprints of the Lord through these past experiences? I love to look at the moon and stars as often as I can on my evening walks, and sometimes on clear nights, I’ll even go to a park away from city lights to get a closer look at the heavens. The beauty and vastness of space are awe-inspiring! In Psalm 8:3-4, King David considers our awe-inspiring universe and wonders: Why us? Why are we, these tiny creations on a small planet, the focus of the Creator of all that? The truth, David discovered, was that we’re on God’s mind. God – the gigantically powerful Creator who has made everything and everyone and sustains it all – is mindful of us. God constantly pays close, loving attention to us. In a cosmos of unimaginable scale, every single detail of our little lives matters to God! God’s care for us isn’t based on how good we are or how important our work seems. It’s a reflection of God’s character, which is pure love. Jesus describes God’s wonderful loving care for us when he teaches us that God even knows the number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7) and is mindful of his whole creation, including us and even small, common creatures like sparrow birds (Matthew 10:29). This incredible reality – that we’re always on God’s mind – can inspire us to think of God, as well. After all, since our Creator is mindful of us, shouldn’t we be mindful of him? Being mindful of God simply means to live with an awareness of God’s presence. It means letting the reality of God’s presence with us shape our thoughts, feelings, and decisions throughout each day. Just as God is mindful of our needs, we can be mindful of how God is constantly meeting those needs by pouring blessings into our lives. The more we pay attention to those blessings, the more we can be inspired to thank God for them and trust God to answer our prayers for our future needs. When we’re especially busy, it’s easy to push God to the margins of our lives. Being mindful of God involves placing our relationships with God at the center of our lives and choosing to live in the awareness of God’s love from day to day. The ultimate reason we’re on God’s mind is that he loves us so completely. We can’t earn God’s love, and we can’t lose it. We have it forever, and we can just enjoy it, because God is mindful of us. When we’re mindful of God, we remind ourselves to embrace the wonderful love that our Heavenly Father offers to us, and to love him back. The distance between us and the stars is nothing compared to the closeness of a God who carefully centers his attention on us. So, let’s live today and every day with the awareness that we’re loved and cared for because we’re on God’s mind! Intersecting Faith & Life: As you consider how you’re on God’s mind, reflect on these questions: When you look at the natural world (such as the sky, an ocean, or a forest), what’s one feature that inspires you with awe at God’s power, and how does that make God’s focus on you seem even more amazing? How can you change your daily routine to live with more of an intentional awareness of God’s presence with you? What was a time recently when you felt God’s mindful attention for you, such as an answered prayer, a timely piece of guidance, or encouragement? Since being on God’s mind means you’re completely loved and accepted, what’s one area of your life where you can let go of the need for other people’s approval and rely more on God’s unfailing love for you? How can you make more time in your schedule to become more mindful of God by communicating with him in prayer and meditation? Conner Bible Reading:“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Eph. 2:8-9 (NIV) Do you wrestle with the incessant need to do more, be more? Do you find yourself struggling to sit still? Are you bothered by empty hours or blank spaces on the planner? Do you worry about how others perceive your efforts, or lack thereof? Do you feel frustrated by days that cannot be quantified as “productive”? If any of these prompts ring true for you, know you are not alone. One of my greatest struggles in life has been my inner battle with performance and perfectionism. A typical, Type-A, first-born, I am naturally a mover, a shaker, and a doer. I can possess a fierce determination when something needs doing, and can conjure endless endurance to accomplish whatever goal lies ahead. If there is a job to do, you can likely find me in line, ready and waiting to help. Our current culture esteems and celebrates such traits, but at what cost? I used to be proud of these characteristics. However, I have learned over time that all of the “achieving” can cause unwanted repercussions. Several years back, I recognized this reality the hard way, through hurt inflicted on those I love most. Full of grief and repentance, I spent years surrendering my pursuits of performance and perfectionism to the Lord and saw a real change in my behavior and my heart, so much so that I joked that I was a recovering perfectionist. You would think, after putting so much effort towards such an outcome, I would steer clear of potential pitfalls in this area. However… “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jer. 17:9, NIV). As I reflect on where I find myself today, I am disappointed and frustrated that I have once again journeyed down the slippery slope of achievement and works. I am deeply grieved by the recognition of this repeated pattern. How do I keep ending up here? What am I doing wrong? I feel like Paul when he said, “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate,” (Rom. 7:15, NLT). Perhaps you can relate. Despite my failings, hope remains because hope stems from a source far beyond me. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Eph. 2:8-9 (NIV) Even further, the Bible says His power is best demonstrated through my weakness, not my strength (2 Cor. 12:9), and the good work God began in me will be completed by HIM (Phil. 1:6). I am not responsible for anything other than surrender and worship to HIM. The Lord does have work for each of us to do, but He is not requiring us to take on more than He asks. If you are anything like me, then there is a good chance you, too, are doing more than God has called you to do. He isn’t asking you to prove your worth to Him or anyone else around you. You are precious and valuable simply because you are. He is pleased with who He created you to be, and any effort to gain approval or satisfaction from busyness and productivity will only draw you farther away from Him rather than towards Him. Will you join me today in laying down the clamor and call of perfectionism? If so, pray this prayer with me: “Lord, I recognize that my longing for productivity is an attempt to validate my purpose in this world outside of you. Would you forgive me for trying to gain Your approval and the approval of others through my own efforts rather than depending on you? Would you help me to see how I can rest in You? Today, I yield my heart to you. Help me to understand how I can live differently, how I can live in the present moment, filled with peace. Thank you for your unending mercy and grace. Amen.” Intersecting Faith & Life: Where do you find yourself today? Have you overfilled your plate with endless commitments and now feel overwhelmed and exhausted? If so, spend some time with the Lord today and ask Him to reveal to you if there are any changes He is calling you to make, either now or in the future. If helpful, set a timer for ten minutes and simply sit in the quiet. Don’t pick up your phone or check your email. Don’t read a book. Just sit in the quietness and converse with your Lord. Conner Bible Reading:“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” - Matthew 7:7 (NIV) Do you feel like there are needs in your life, or desires in your heart that remain unfulfilled? Perhaps you are longing for a change of circumstances, in need of tangible provision, or losing hope over a lingering, neglected dream. Maybe you wonder if God is aware of these aspirations and is intentionally choosing to deny your desires. But before you assume the Lord is uninterested, ask yourself, have you brought these cares to Him? The Word of God repeatedly offers us invitation after invitation to bring our concerns and requests to the Lord. Philippians 4:6 encourages us not to be “… anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our requests to God,” (NIV). When worries feel weighty, we can bring these feelings of overwhelm to the Lord. He is not standing far off, but instead is ready and waiting for us to call upon Him. Hebrews 4:14-16 also reminds us how Jesus walked among humanity, and not only empathizes with our weaknesses and desires, but He fully understands. As such, we can “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need,” (NIV). The Lord is not only able, but ready and willing to offer comfort and provision. Even further, He reminds us that when we take delight in Him, He will give us the desire of our hearts (Ps. 37:4). Friend, God is not withholding good gifts from you, but you and I both have a part to play in the process. Years ago, my husband shared a teaching on today’s passage. Though his message was preached almost fifteen years ago, it is one that has remained with me to this day. Through his study, I learned that if we look closely, this scripture offers three distinct directives: ask, seek, knock. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matt. 7:7, NKJV). The true message of this passage is one of perseverance. In today’s on-demand, instant fulfillment culture, we have lost a measure of determined persistence. When something doesn’t work out as planned, it is much easier for us to just sit down, give up, or walk away. But the Lord is calling us to stretch ourselves beyond our supposed boundaries. To fight for what we desire and to fight for our relationship with Him. He is not denying us. He is compelling us to exert effort, not sit idly by with casual expectation. He is calling us to action. Ask. If that doesn’t work, then seek. If seeking remains elusive, knock. He promises He will respond. The passage goes on to say, “or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matt. 7:7-11, NKJV). Our Heavenly Father truly is a good father. He longs to behold and bless His children. He is simply waiting for us to take the initiative. To ask… to seek… to knock. Intersecting Faith & Life: Are you carrying unfulfilled desires in your heart? Do you feel like God is distant or intentionally denying you a potential destiny? If so, ask yourself, when was the last time you brought these petitions to the Lord? Even if your dreams have remained dormant for years, I encourage you, continue to bring your requests to Him. Though the final outcome may not be exactly what you had in mind, you can be assured that He hears your plea and will respond when you call. Take some time today to look up the dictionary definition of the word “perseverance.” Then, consider if your actions or communications with the Lord exemplify perseverance. Is there any room for adjustments or improvements? If so, ask the Lord to help you draw near to Him, trusting that whatever the outcome, His work in your life is ultimately for your good and is fulfilling your deepest desires. Conner Bible Reading:“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” - Psalm 107:1 (NIV) Do you feel like your current season of life is so hard that you struggle to find reasons to be thankful? Perhaps your relationships are strained, your finances are tight, or your health has become a daily battle. These challenging circumstances can crush your spirit and your ability to recognize the good when the bad screams so loud it deafens any other thoughts. This discontentment can feel especially acute during the holidays. For many of us, these festive seasons can be reminders of all that appears missing. However, no matter what is going on in each of our lives, there is always something to be grateful for. Likely, there are more reasons than we realize to be thankful. But it takes intentional effort to see the good rather than the bad. If we look to scripture for guidance in this area, it is abundantly clear we are not the only ones who wrestle with faithfully fostering a thankful heart. The psalmist and king, David, shares his angst and feelings of displeasure and dissatisfaction when he declares: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…” (Ps. 42:5, NIV). I am not sure what David was facing when he penned these words, but it is clear his soul needed a forced redirection towards the goodness of God. Beyond this example, we can see repeated exhortations throughout the Word calling us to stir up a spirit of gratitude, even when we feel nothing of the sort. The Bible tells us we should always give thanks to God the Father (Eph. 5:20), give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thes. 5:18), and we should live our lives rooted and built up in Him, strengthening our faith as we were taught, overflowing with thankfulness (Col. 2:6). When concepts or guidelines are repeated in the Word, we can know the Lord is trying to tell us something. He is trying to get our attention. This recurring thematic instruction to intentionally push past our feelings of lack towards recognizing and rejoicing in the present abundance, confirms how challenging this can be for many of us. Why? Because, against all logical reasoning, our brains recall traumatic or harmful events far more than moments filled with joy or comfort. As such, we have to put effort into recognizing all of the wonderful, beautiful, and valuable blessings already present in our daily lives. It is amazing what we can notice if we simply look up and out beyond our unwelcome or undesirable circumstances. When was the last time you took a walk or simply stood out on your back porch to gaze upon the stars in the night sky? Or instead of rushing through your morning coffee and out the door, waking up just five minutes earlier so you can sit in the quiet and savor the warm comfort in your mug as the sun rises to greet the new day? Each one of these simple, small recognitions can add up to big change in your perspective and your overall sense of optimism and fulfillment during the holidays. Just like everything else, practice makes permanent. The more you choose to intentionally practice thankfulness, even when life hurts, the more you will discover a continual sense of peace and serenity that will carry you through any and all seasons of life. Intersecting Faith & Life: How is your heart during this holiday season? Is it filled with worship, awe, and thankfulness for the gifts of God, or is it overwhelmed with dread and disappointment? Have you intentionally practiced gratitude in the past? If so, how did it help to reassure your heart during difficult times? I encourage you to use this season as a reason to implement the daily practice of gratitude. Use a journal, the notes on your phone, a “thankful” jar, sticky notes, or take photos – whatever feels most appealing to you as a form of documentation. Then, challenge yourself to find at least one thing to be thankful for each day. It can be as small as the fall of the first snow or a smile from a stranger in the grocery line. After you have successfully recognized one reason to be thankful each day, see if you can add more to your list. Before you know it, your heart will automatically recognize blessings without you even consciously looking for them. THE PROMISE KEEPER Part 4: Cup of Praise – The Promise of Fulfillment “From Success to Service” - Introducing “Mark” Mark was a rising star in the corporate world. He had the job, the bonus, the prestige, the weekend get-aways. Everyone praised him. Yet despite it all, he felt a deep emptiness inside—a gnawing void. One day, on a business trip, Mark visited a modest urban neighborhood on a whim. He met a local ministry worker who invited him to join a service-project that afternoon: helping refurbish an old community centre for at-risk youth. Mark showed up out of curiosity, not commitment. There, amid the paint-stained brushes and laughter of kids reclaiming space, something shifted. He realised: “I'm good at success — but it's not fulfilling me.” The smiles of the kids, the gratitude of the neighbourhood, the real-time impact—this stirred something in him. Over the next few months, Mark started going back—weekends, evenings—helping the neighbourhood centre, mentoring a teenager, listening to stories of struggle, cheering on simple victories. He discovered that his talents, his resources, his time—when invested not just for himself but for others—began to fill the void he had tried to ignore. Mark came to see that the promise he had been seeking wasn't: “You will have more, you will succeed more.” The promise he found was: “You will live more; you will serve more; and in that serving you will find fulfilment.” His life transformed: the career remained, but the definition of success changed. He measured success now in lives touched, hope renewed, a community uplifted. When he gave generously of himself, he found the greatest return. When he served others, he discovered what he was created for. He realised the cup of fulfilment was meant to be poured out, not just held for oneself. REVIEW: THE FOUR CUPS OF GOD'S PROMISES Our Christian Communion Celebration is modeled after the Jewish Passover, but where we use one cup, the Jewish people use four cups—each tied to Exodus 6:6–7. These cups represent four eternal promises God made more than 3,000 years ago, promises that still form the heart of His work today: Exodus 6:6–7 (NIV) Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.” A PROMISE is AN OFFER WITH A GUARANTEED RESULT. 1. “I will bring you out…” - Cup of SANCTIFICATION – The PROMISE OF SALVATION 2. “I will free you…” - Cup of DELIVERANCE – The PROMISE OF FREEDOM 3. “I will redeem you…” - Cup of REDEMPTION – The PROMISE OF RESTORATION 4. “I will take you as my own people.” - Cup of PRAISE – The PROMISE OF FULFILLMENT The Hebrew word “Hallel” means “to celebrate.” Combined with “Jah” (God), it gives us Hallelujah = Celebrate God! The Fourth Cup (Hallel) is about a celebrating life—“Hallelujah”—a life that magnifies God by making a difference with others as His people. This Fourth Cup is about LIVING A LARGE, FULL LIFE—not problem-free, but MEANINGFUL, FRUITFUL, and OVERFLOWING WITH JOY. God's desire is for you to live in such a way that your life itself becomes an act of praise—overflowing into others, making a difference in the world. Jesus confirmed this in: John 10:10 (TLB) — The thief's purpose is to steal, kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. MANY DON'T LIVE IN FULFILLMENT BECAUSE… They let their past cripple them. They let culture define them. They try to do it all alone. THREE PRACTICAL WAYS TO WALK IN THE PROMISE OF FULFILLMENT 1. INVEST IN ETERNAL IMPACT Matthew 6:19–20 (NIV) — Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Fulfillment isn't found in what we accumulate, fulfillment is found in WHAT WE CONTRIBUTE. Ask: “How is my time, talent, and treasure advancing God's Kingdom?” Living for eternity gives your life lasting significance. 2. CELEBRATE PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION Philippians 3:13–14 (NIV) — Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal… Don't let the weight of unfinished goals or past mistakes rob you of joy. Learn to praise God for progress… every step forward is evidence of His promise. Fulfillment grows when GRATITUDE BECOMES YOUR POSTURE. 3. MULTIPLY YOUR LIFE IN OTHERS 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV) — And the things you have heard me say… entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.
