Apollos was a gifted speaker... with some big holes in his theology... this could have gone really wrong! A modern-day "evangelist" might sweep into town, preach a few nights, then fly away forever. Not Paul. We've joined the traveling company of Paul, courtesy of Dr. Luke, and we see that the Apostle is no shallow showman. He's not concerned about increasing his head-count or his pocketbook; he's interested in deep roots, and lasting fruit. We'll be in Acts 18 with Jim after this personal story. We think our world is changing fast - but we've got nothing on the first century! Even after Jesus ascended, tidal waves of change continued to break. The Jewish sect called The Way was flooded with Gentiles; the persecutor Saul became the persecuted Paul; evangelism was democratized. It's that last "disruption" that Jim would like to talk about today, in his sermon, Empowering People to be Witnesses. We're like paper towels - we're absorbent! Now, there's no use denying it; if you think you haven't soaked up any of your culture, you haven't gone to another culture yet. When the first missionaries were sent out from Antioch, they found that God had provided a bridge between cultures - in the person of Barnabas. Continuing our survey of the Acts of the Apostles, we'll start a new sermon from Jim today. It's called, Launching the Original Mission. John 20:24-29 New Revised Standard VersionJesus and Thomas24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin[a]), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
After Peter raised a woman from the dead, he was involved in an even bigger miracle! It's so obvious to us today that God's salvation is for the whole world - but maybe it wasn't that obvious to the disciples...before this happened. As the crowd began to disperse after the Sermon on the Mount, they weren't talking about the message; they were fascinated by the Preacher. The ideas and images that Jesus had given His followers on that Galilean hillside were burned into their minds, forever. But He, Himself, had made an even deeper impression on them. And that should be true for us, too, as we close these familiar chapters in Matthew's Gospel. Here's Jim to conclude his sermon, The Rock Holds. Life's rains and floods will come. Since we can't stop them, we need a way to survive them. Jesus never promised us sunshine and blue skies! Rather, His forecast is tribulation and persecution for those who follow Him. But we don't have to be swept away, even by the worst of life's storms; we can build our house on the Rock. We've come to the final message in Jim's Sermon on the Mount series, What a Way to Live! and today he'll show how the Application portion of that discourse relates to everything the Lord has said, so far. We have big worries because we have little faith. Christians have a chance to shine in our anxious world because - unlike everyone around us - we don't have to worry. And, since we've been taking Jesus seriously in His Sermon on the Mount, we could say that it's wrong for us to worry. Wrong because we have clear promises from a faithful Shepherd. Today Jim will wrap up his sermon, Managing Your Stress. Birds have no refrigerators! Birds also have no can openers, no pantries - not even a plastic storage container. They receive their "daily bread" when it's needed. Maybe we should trust God more, like our feathered friends. Jesus was making a point by asking, rhetorically, "Aren't you more valuable than a bird?" The Lord posed 5 such questions in this part of the Sermon on the Mount, and we'll cover most of them today. Here's Jim with Part 2 of Managing Your Stress. In the "hierarchy of needs," Jesus invites us to skip Level 1. Poor Abe Maslow: He didn't know that our most basic needs - food, clothing, shelter - could be charged to the account of a heavenly Father. He should have studied the Sermon on the Mount! In this episode, I will be discussing the significance of operating your life in silence. Our world today places a high value on publicizing almost every detail about one’s personal day to day life. Sometimes, these details are either still ‘in the making’ or haven’t already come to pass but what we will be talking about in this episode, is the importance of keeping certain aspects of our lives discreet and moving in silence. November 29, 2020. It is so much more than the birth of a baby that we await in this Advent season. In her sermon today, Pastor Meagan invites us to support each other in our commitment to take seriously the call to keep watch for the presence of God in our midst. Readings: Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19, Mark 13:24-37 *** Transcript *** So thinking about all this waiting, I can still feel the anticipation that filled me as a child when Thanksgiving came, and I knew Christmas was “just around the corner.” When we were expecting company, I would watch from our couch in the living room, because it had a great view of the street and I'd be able to see our guests arriving. I would spend the entire month of December, figuratively speaking, leaning over the back of the couch, trying to make the time go faster! I was desperately curious about every detail of the parties that were being planned — what food would be served, when my cousins would come in from out of town, what service we would attend at church, what Santa would bring me, and could I please, please, please go along when my dad went to pick up my grandmother and my great aunts? Every minute seemed like an hour, hours like days, days like weeks. Christmas was all I could think about, and at the same time it felt like it would never get there. Advent is a time to follow what Jesus calls us to do in Mark — stay awake, keep watch. And I certainly had that down, even if I was more focused on parties and presents than on the birth of Jesus. Time has changed since then, or perhaps it's my perception that has changed. Now rather than being painfully slow, the month of December flies by so quickly that I hardly have time to realize that it’s Advent before suddenly here it is — Christmas Eve. Being who I am, I am always prepared, at least in one sense. Presents are bought and wrapped, the tree is trimmed, food for the family meal is ready. But spiritually and emotionally, I'm always taken by surprise when Christmas comes. I spend more time on my to-do list and less time leaning over the back of the couch. And as the years go by I find myself yearning for the time that I spent as a child simply anticipating. Our effort to be present and wait during Advent is certainly not helped when we have to walk past several aisles of Christmas decorations in the store in order to get to the Halloween costumes in mid-October, all while listening to “Deck the Halls” and “Frosty the Snowman” piped through the sound system. Everything around us seems to call us to a flurry of activity: buy, bake, order, send, and hurry up because time is running out! And of course, it is important to do the things necessary to get ready to welcome and celebrate with family and friends. But in the midst of all of this activity, on top of the regular daily life that continues, it's easy to forget that Advent is about waiting, and hope, and it's particularly easy to forget what we are waiting and hoping for. So, what are we waiting for? The obvious answer is that Advent is a season of waiting for Christmas, Jesus’ birth. But it is so much more than the birth of a baby that we await. God, in all God’s fullness — the God who, as Isaiah described, makes the mountains quake, the God who Mark tells us had the power to make the sun dark and the stars fall, the God of all creation — came to live with us in the messiness of life in the person of Jesus. We remember not just the historical event of Jesus’ birth, but the reality of God’s presence and work in us and in the world, here and now. Advent is a time to remember that God is with us today, a time to live in hope. When we look at the world, it can sometimes be really challenging to have hope. All we need to do is turn on the news these days, and we know we live in a broken world. Every decision we make — about work, school, Worship, our social gatherings — is impacted by the pandemic that is raging worse than ever. Like one of the kids said, are we done yet? Are we done? Most of us are planning Christmas celebrations that will look quite different from what we're used to, and we already grieve that loss. We listen, and we hear the voices of nurses, doctors, and other staff at our community hospitals, who are stretched to — and far beyond — their limits. We hold in prayer those who are ill and struggling for breath, and family members of people who are ill and those who have died. Our communities are in pain, as racial injustice, poverty, and violence are on the rise. And we are in the midst of political turmoil that seems to impact so many things, and make many of our relationships more complicated than ever. And for those who have experienced losses in the last year — those who have lost loved ones or relationships, or who have moved from beloved homes filled with memories, or who are living with the realities of unemployment or illness, Advent and Christmas carry the pain and grief of knowing that this year will not be like the ones before — and perhaps no Christmas will ever be the same. So today, on this first Sunday of Advent, we take a few minutes to hear those voices, feel that pain, and ask the question of how we can have hope, and see God at work, in the midst of it all. We can take comfort in the midst of this brokenness, knowing that the pain of this world is not new. In the verses before our passage from Mark, Jesus describes war, betrayal, murder, destruction. And he encourages his followers, promising that nothing is too much for God to overcome. With the psalmist, we can bring the brokenness of our communities, and our own pain and brokenness, to God, and cry out — “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, shine forth. Stir up your might, and come to save us! Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.” The miracle of the hope that we have in Advent is that we are waiting on a God who has never turned away from our pain. As Christians today, whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, whatever grief we live with in this season, whatever challenges we face, we await the birth of Jesus knowing the rest of the story — Jesus lived, taught, challenged, loved, forgave, healed, called. And Jesus died — and rose again. Death was not the last word then, and it is not the last word today. Jesus transformed people’s lives, and we are invited to put ourselves completely in God’s hands, like clay ready to be formed by the potter, willing to be changed, to be made new. In Advent, we're called to live in hope that God is with us today, to trust that the kingdom of God is at hand. Waiting, anticipating, living in hope don’t easily find their way onto our “to-do lists,” but in this moment, for this season, it may be the most important thing for us to do.We don’t know the day or the hour when the kingdom of God will be fully accomplished, but we can keep watch, and if we do, we will see glimpses of it. We can see God at work in the way people love and care for each other, in voices courageously speaking truths that are hard to hear, in the beauty of creation. And we can call out like a watchperson — Hey, look, there it is, God is here, did you see it? — so those around us will also know that we have great reason for hope. We are called to witness to God’s presence by being the hands and feet of God in the world ourselves, by showing God’s love and care for others and calling for justice when it is due, so that others can see God at work through us. And most of all, we can put our trust in God, who sends Jesus to show us that no matter what is happening in our lives and in the world, we are never alone. I plan to spend a lot of time leaning over the back of the couch this Advent, anticipating God’s coming into the world anew, trusting in hope in God’s faithful promise. I invite you to join me, so we can support each other in our commitment to take seriously the call to keep watch for the presence of God in our midst. We don’t know the day or the hour, but there is plenty of room on the couch, and it has a great view. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19, Mark 13:24-37

The Amazing Grace of GodTitus 2:11-15 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus%202%3A11-15&version=NIV11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” toungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this presentage, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”Bottom Line for this message” Grace has a Face”Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.1. First, the use of the word “for” connects this verse to the previous verses. Because we are therecipients of God's grace and salvation, we should reflect the values and engage the behaviorsthat Paul promoted in verses 2-10.Paul previously discussed preaching, leadership and teaching, all of which is important to the Christianlifestyle (making disciples who make disciples), but what God does in verse 11 can be summed up in onework: GRACE2. What is grace?1. Many say “unmerited favor” or “God's favorable attitude towards us”, but these definitionsare too abstract relative to this verse. Websters has several definitions, but Websters doesn'tdefine Grace for us, God does. The grace of God is an ACTION, not an ABSTRACTION. It's a PERSON, not a CONCEPT.1. Grace is an actual event in space and time. Grace has a face – Jesus ChristScarred, bloody and in agonyA face of the person that suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mineA face of grace- bringing salvation to all people3. Grace isn't cheap…it comes at such a great cost, but our modern theology sometimesattempts to cheapen it by offering people what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”:Cheap grace is: the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentanceBaptism without church disciplineCommunion without repentanceAbsolution without personal confessionOne thing that I believe has made Grace appear cheaper is the modern American church.- Modern American church grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are. The coffee's on us, sitback and relax…and don't worry about changing. We couldn't ask you to do that. We don't wantto offend you.”- Grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are and be prepared and willing for God to changeyou. Because when you recognize the true cost of grace, you recognize that it is a debt that youcannot pay, and you are compelled to change…out of gratitude. You will have to die to yourself.Be prepared to sacrifice parts of your sinful lifelstyle that the world accepts, and says it's OK, butGod doesn't.”Galatians 5:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+5%3A24&version=NIV24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Grace says “I created man and woman”. Modern American grace says “it's all good…whatever you wantto be. God probably made a mistake” in an effort to avoid looking intolerant.God says “I created marriage between a man and a woman”. Modern American grace says “it's allgood…marry who you want. Who are we to judge? Besides, our numbers are low”.God says “I knit babies together in their mother's wombs”. Modern American grace says “It's a woman'sbody and she has right to choose”. Who are we to judge?Bonnhoeffer went on to say:“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. Itis the pearl of great price to buy for which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule ofChrist, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of JesusChrist at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.”“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It iscostly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because itcost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheapfor us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, butdelivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipIt's not popular to say that Jesus is the only way to God. Modern culture and theologies…even some inthe Christian Church…see this as too narrow and restrictive, intolerant and unloving. But to say there aremany ways, makes no sense, and stands in the face of the sacrifice of true Grace.God would not have sent His only Son to die on a cross if He could have saved us by any other means. No Grace would mean no salvation. If there were a bunch of ways to get to heaven, then why did Christdie? When Jesus was praying in Luke 22:42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A42&version=NIV"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."Basically asking…if there's any other way. God didn't say, “well, actually there are a thousand ways, butI'm going to make you go through this anyway”. Just No.Grace has a Face. The face of JesusGalatians 2:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A21&version=NIV21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died fornothing!”Back to Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all peopleWhat is salvation? While sometimes in the Bible, salvation is being saved from one's enemies, in the New Testament, itrefers more to end of time events…God's judgement. Salvation, in this sense, is being saved from God'sperfect judgement…through His perfect GRACE- Grace makes all people savable – every sin of every person has it's answer in Jesus.- “Every person who ends up in hell steps over a blood-stained cross with their name on it to getthere”Grace has a Face…the face of Jesus. The face of salvation.1. Grace TRAINS us. (verse 12)12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright andgodly lives in this present age,1. Grace doesn't flatter us…it teaches us…it trains us-It doesn't tell us all is well, but speaks bluntly, directly and lovingly-for our own good.Titus 2:12 puts an end, once and for all to any theology that separates salvation from the demands ofobedience to Jesus Christ.-Grace teaches us that our lifestyle is suicidal…not in a worldly way, but in an eternalway.-Grace teaches us what we need to do, and what not to do in order to change.-Grace educates us, trains us and to reform and transform. God expects us to go in anew direction when we experience His Grace…His Son…His salvation. If you have you accepted His Grace…His son, and have not been changed, maybe you didn't.-Grace trains us to live better lives according to God's standards and priorities and notour own.-Our works become the natural response to HIS works- Grace teaches us to live a certain kind of life, to live in a particular way, and defined byparticular character qualities.1. Develop self-control2. Live uprightly3. Live Godly lives…for NOW, not for some other place and time, but for here and now. What does that training look like?1. Sometimes it looks like Divine discipline – sometimes it's difficult circumstances.Hebrews 12:7-11 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A7-11&version=NIV7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplinedby their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are notlegitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers whodisciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father ofspirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for ourgood, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained byit.- If you feel that the circumstances of life are stretching you beyond what you think you canbear, or beyond what you want to bear, it may well be the Grace of God training you.Like a serious workout at the gym…it hurts, and isn't pleasant at the time. But if werecognize it as Grace and embrace it for what it is, then it will have that amazingstrengthening, fruit-producing effect.Embrace it…embrace the training of GraceHOW?1. Training requires some degree of cooperation or response on our part.Anyone who has been to the gym or worked with a trainer understands that you can't just showup for training and watch the trainer do all the work and somehow benefit from it. You have toactively engage and actively participate if you expect to be changed by it.2. We have to deny ourselvesThe first step is self-denial.You can't train for a marathon without first denying various habits and behaviors in your lifethat would get in the way of you preparing for the race….like diet and lots and lots of running.Training in grace is like training for a marathon- you have to say NO to several things as a firststep, in this case: 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passionsUnGodliness – Whatever actions or attitudes undermine God's centrality in your life (Ifit makes God marginal, it is ungodly)…like cheap American Christian Church Grace.Godliness is having a regard for God's glory and God's will in every aspect of our lives, doing everything out of reverence and love for Him.Worldly Passions – The result of a hungry soul that doesn't have God at the center.Anything that steals your focus away from God…like maybe politics?Saying NO is not a one-time thing. It's an ongoing part of training. We're called to take up our cross, the cross of self-denial every day.Count the cost of what training will require.Luke 14:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+14%3A28&version=NIV28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see ifyou have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it,everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'2. Grace is POWERFUL-Just as God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage, so too the Son of God redeems, withgreat power, a new covenant people from bondage to lawlessness and sin. Only the Grace of God,through the death of His Son can redeem from lawlessness, can liberate from sin and can set the captivesoul free. Nothing else will…nothing else can.Jesus described the reason for His coming in this way:Mark 10:45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A45&version=NIV45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Paul described it this way…2 Corinthians 5:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin [a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness ofGodGrace has the power to conform us into the righteousness of God2. Grace teaches us to WAIT for what we hope for…to wait expectantly for His coming13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist,-Waiting sometimes seems passive, like we are not doing anything, but Biblically speaking, waiting is notpassive…it's ACTIVE- Waiting in this sense draws us forward into action, rather than causing us to relax- Like a bridegroom waiting for his bride, there's nothing passive about waiting if the focus ofyour wait is your primary desire. It's important to realize that there is a profound difference between passive waiting and active waiting.Passive waiting can take the form of cynicism, complaining, or simply doing nothing.Active waiting, however, is a posture that seeks to cultivate habits that are focused on intentionalpreparation. It is a blessed hope because unlike every other hope we might have, it cannot be disappointed….Jesus iscoming back.We are waiting for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.Are you waiting on the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior? If you are excitedly waitingfor Jesus to come, your waiting looks like preparation. Your preparation looks like fruit. If you're notprepared, and not bearing fruit, then what are you waiting for??(Grace is Powerful) (Grace teaches us to actively wait)2. Grace is PURIFYING14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that arehis very own, eager to do what is good.-It cleanses, washes and renews: The death of Christ cleanses us-It purifies our hearts by faith and our lives by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 25:4 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+25%3A4&version=NIVRemove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; The Refiner's fire is purifying: When precious metals are refined the impurities (dross) must first beremoved. These pollutants are burned away as the metals are subjected to intense heat. As a result ofthe refining process the craftsman is given pure silver to work with as he crafts the metal into a beautifulmasterpiece. Without first removing the dross, the precious metal would be unworkable. Thesilversmith knows when the silver is pure because he can see his reflection in it.Have we allowed God to purify us through His grace? Can He see His reflection in our lives?3. Grace is POSSESIVEVerse 14 …to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.-Kind of paradoxical – even though grace is incredibly generous, it is also tremendouslypossessive…even jealous. He PURCHASED us. To PURIFY us to POSSESS us…literally for Himself.…a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.1 Peter 2:9-10 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9-10&version=NIV9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you maydeclare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were nota people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you havereceived mercy.-When Grace comes into your life, it takes over…it buys you and makes you its own. That's avery good thing…that's SALVATION.-When you encounter the Grace of God…the cross of Christ, you are no longer your own, but Hisown possession. Grace is possessive because it is costly. It cost God the life of His only Son.1 Corinthians 6:19-20https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19-20&version=NIV19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you havereceived from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with yourbodies.Grace appeared at the climax of history through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but Grace isalways there for us in the continual self-giving of the Son, like a steady, never-ending stream.-Have you embraced Grace, and all He provides and requires?-Am I now living a life defined by Grace? - You will know by the fruit.- God's Grace appears in verse 11, and God's glory appears in verse 13. The grace that has appearedspeaks of His first coming, and the Glory that will appear speaks of His second coming.4. God's Grace teaches us who is LordGod's Grace teaches us what we should learn15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”1. Learn doctrine…these are the things you should teach – refers to the entire letter-a letter filled withsound teaching2. Learn duty…encourage with authority. Go alongside and challenge in the way we should all live as welook for “the blessed hope”.3. Learn discernment: if “encourage” speaks to us about the way we should go, “rebuke” admonishes usconcerning the way we should NOT go. When we confront or correct, we do so with all authority. Wedon't compromise…Grace cost too much to compromise.4. Learn dedication: Speaking the truth will not always be popular, but it will always be necessary. It willrequire courage, conviction, the confidence of Christ – and will always require love as it's foundation. This will enable you to humbly stand tall, refusing to be intimidated by Christ's opponents. In this, youwill not let anyone disregard or despise you.Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Be above reproach and love them. (Like Paul and Timothy)Recap1. Grace isn't cheap. Don't treat it cheaply and don't represent it as cheap. That's false teaching.Grace Christian Fellowship –the sign says: “Love God, Love People”. We love God, and we lovepeople because we so strongly desire to show people the true Grace of God through Jesus Christ. That tells peoplethe message is more important than the brand…that love is more important than a logo…that the objective is more important than opticsthat it's better to be a hospital for the lost, than a country club for the savedthat Grace itself is precious…that time here is short, but eternity isn't…that conviction is more important than comfortwe can't say “we're good”, when we know we're all badGrace is costly. Grace is Honest. And Grace is redemptivebut at the same time, any of this done without love is worthless2. Let Grace train you…like a marathon. Training can hurt, but understanding what you're training forputs everything in perspective.3. Put away anything in your life that doesn't bear fruit for God's kingdom, and keep Him as your mainfocus.4. Know His word and teach it with authority.5. Stand tall, confidently and passionately love God and love people. Our hearts should well up with praise in response to the Grace of God.Grace has a Face and He truly is amazing.
Acts 26:24-3224 While he was making this defense, Festus exclaimed, “You are out of your mind, Paul! Too much learning is driving you insane!” 25 But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking the sober truth. 26 Indeed the king knows about these things, and to him I speak freely; for I am certain that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.” 28 Agrippa said to Paul, “Are you so quickly persuading me to become a Christian?”[a] 29 Paul replied, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also all who are listening to me today might become such as I am—except for these chains.”30 Then the king got up, and with him the governor and Bernice and those who had been seated with them; 31 and as they were leaving, they said to one another, “This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment.” 32 Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to the emperor.”

- You must be born again - For God so loved the world We are started right off with a quote from John MacArthur regarding the passage we will be studying today! He says, “The story of Nicodemus reinforces John's theme that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God and that he came to offer salvation to men.” Further in He says, “Jesus also presented God's plan of salvation to Nicodemus, showing that He was the messenger, whose redemptive work brings about the promised salvation to His people.” Our website: www.deepbiblestudies.com Our email contact@deepbiblestudies.com Our Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgyPJQE2418rWhnkmvNd9qQ Our Instagram https://www.instagram.com/deepbiblestudies/ Our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Deepbiblestudies DEEP Bible Studies Gospel Episode open.spotify.com/episode/6w9ydEA62lXghKqu7HpCpl?context=spotify%3Ashow%3A48NVPKFVGa35K1qtvUdrVg&si=27IklTQFQZKPxvBsMT_Exw First 40 minutes of American Gospel (also found in Netflix): https://youtu.be/ocHm18wUAGU John MacArthur ESV Study Bible https://www.gty.org/store/bibles/44ESVCOB/esv-macarthur-study-bible https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2016%3A24-26&version=ESV John Piper in Mark 8: 34-38 “Save your Life by Losing It” https://www.desiringgod.org/labs/save-your-life-by-losing-it & Mark 8:34—38 // You Can't Buy a Soul Out of HellDesiring God • 8.5K views9:36 Faith by Matt Chandler https://www.tvcresources.net/resource-library/sermons/faith/ Dr. Steven Lawson ‘The Nature of Saving Faith' http://www.onepassionministries.org/transcripts/2017/11/30/the-nature-of-saving-faith-romans-418-22 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/deep-bible-studies/message

July 19, 2020. Any gardener knows that weeds are a never-ending challenge. Pastor Meagan preaches today on Jesus' parable of the weeds among the wheat, and how our world and our lives are a lot like the field in the story.Readings: Isaiah 44:6-8, Romans 8:12-25, Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43*** Transcript ***In our gospel today, Jesus takes his parable about the sower and the seed from last week and he extends it, saying that these gardens that have so many weeds growing in them are like the Kingdom of Heaven. And as much as I love gardens, I am not a very skilled gardener, so my first reaction to hearing this image quite honestly is, “Ugh!” Any gardener knows weeds are a never-ending challenge. This spring, it seemed like every time we thought we had gotten all of the dandelions up, we would turn around and there would be half a dozen more. And of course dandelions aren’t ones that you can just grab with your hand and pull up easily. It takes some work with a weed puller to get at the roots. And even so, often at least part of it will remain tightly entrenched in the soil. Or more seeds, unseen in the earth, are preparing themselves to sprout, leaving the possibility that another dandelion will pop up where the last one lay.And being new to St Louis, and tending new gardens, there are of course many things growing in our yard with which we are not yet familiar. Often, as a new plant would sprout, one of us would say to the other, “Is that a plant or a weed?” And as often as not, the other would say, “Beats me.” We've learned a lot by uploading photos to online plant identification apps, or posting pictures on Facebook and asking friends what they thought. But we've been left with a certain amount of guesswork, pulling out what we believed to be weeds, and leaving what we weren't sure of. In the front yard, we had several small lily flowers pop up in just random places. They bloomed beautifully and then they died, leaving green leaves and a brown, crusty stem behind in the midst of the grass. I initially advocated to leave them where they grew. But once the flowers died, they provided far more of a challenge as Karen would attempt to mow around them than they offered in beauty. So I relented, and Karen took them out. “Are they plants or weeds?” “Beats me.”And the process of weeding, as we all know, is an ongoing one, requiring patient, hard work — and it is as much about tending the plants and flowers as it is about removing the weeds. I learned long ago to take it in blocks, addressing one section, then another, then another, of the garden beds. Attempts to remove all the weeds at once have never ended well. So, this parable of the weeds in the wheat as the Kingdom of Heaven definitely gives me pause. But the more I think about it, the more it resonates. Because in spite of my initial “ugh” reaction to this image, truth be told, this world, and our lives, are an awful lot like the field in Jesus’ parable — not clean and neat, yielding only wheat and no weeds, but a mix of wheat, weeds, and things we can’t even identify.I remember as a teenager getting into an argument with one of my brothers, probably about something really silly, and feeling desperate for him to know that I was right. And the more we got into it, the more my voice went up — and the more I tried to make myself tall (a futile effort at any time). And my brother said, “You’re really mad about this!” And in the midst of my unawareness, I replied of course, “No, I’m not.” “Oh yeah, you are.” “No, I’m not!” “Uh huh!” “No I'm not! Stop telling me I'm angry! You're just wrong!" I was so frustrated and angry. It was happening right inside me, and yet I couldn’t see it. Has anyone else ever had that happen? Where something was going on around you, or with a another person, or inside you, and you just couldn’t figure it out?Over the years, getting to know myself, understanding how I am feeling or what I am doing, and what is helpful and what is not, what is wheat and what is weed if you will, has been a process — much like the ongoing process of weeding a garden. Because being human is not a clean, neat, clear venture, but really super complicated at times. Paul describes it in a lot of different ways, today using the image of labor pains to describe the challenges of living through this process of becoming, of finding our way when so many things can distract and block us from seeing and doing God’s will in the world. In Luther’s language, we are all sinner and saint. We all have weeds and wheat. I think of it as living through a really messy middle, certainly in process, but not there yet.The good news in all of this is, God knows this. And as it tells us in Isaiah today, no matter what, we belong to God. We have been adopted, chosen, to be God’s children, beloved. And from “of old,” Isaiah says, God has told us that only God is God. In other words, in all this messiness, of good and evil, saint and sinner, God is ultimately in charge. We are not. We, along with all of creation, are in process, family of faith. And God is with us in that. God will be faithful right up to the end. And we can have hope that in the end, God will heal all wounds, remove all evil, leaving only the wheat that is growing along the way. Jesus’ parable tells us this too. He says it is not up to us to pull out all of those pesky weeds and create a perfect garden. It's enough for us to live what we call the theology of the cross — we name the wheat and the weeds, the good and the evil that we see, as best we can. We do what we can with God’s help to nurture the good, in ourselves and in others.C. T. Vivian and Congressman John Lewis, who had been working for decades for civil rights and racial justice, against the evils of racism and oppression, know this. Last year Congressman Lewis said, "Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful. Be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, a year. It is the struggle of a lifetime. Never be afraid to get in some good trouble," said congressman John Lewis. And we too can do this, trusting that in the end, only God will be able to sort it all out. Twelve Step spiritual wisdom tells us this too — it is our job to listen, to tend, to notice, and to name, and to ask God for help. But removing the weeds of our lives is up to God and not ours.Jesus tells his followers that in the end, the weeds will be cast into the fire, conjuring up perhaps images of the devil and those overcome by sin, burning in hell. Interestingly, overwhelmingly in scriptures, fire is very sacred. Fire lets Moses know that he should pay attention, that something is happening that he needs to learn about. Fire guides the Israelites in the desert by night. And tongues of fire come upon the disciples at Pentecost, purifying them and empowering them for the work that they have ahead. We all tend to resist the refiner’s fire. Moses comes close to the bush, but he's shaking in his boots. Israelites get weary and frustrated because the end isn’t coming soon enough. The disciples go out after having been blessed by fire, and the people notice their transformation and question it, because of its power. We do this too, when we resist facing the realities of racism and other evils, and see how we ourselves have been blind and complicit with systemic oppressions in this world. Or when we are called out for something we aren't aware that we were doing, we can resist that. Or when we in shame realize something of our own sinfulness, our own being, to change. Because being transformed isn't comfortable, is it? Recognizing the weeds in us isn't comfortable. Living in the messy middle is hard. And sometimes all we want is for this process we are living in to be over. “Is it wheat or weeds?” “Beats me.”We can be encouraged by Isaiah’s words that God’s promises are from the beginning, and they stretch all the way to the end. Jesus promised that God is not going to abandon us to be overcome by the weeds, even though it may seem that way at times. It’s not our job to pull all those weeds out — thank goodness! Because that is a job that is beyond us. It is enough that we tend our gardens as best we can, ask God for help, and trust in God to sort it all out. Thanks be to God.*** Keywords ***2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, YouTube, video, transcript, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Isaiah 44:6-8, Romans 8:12-25, Matthew 13:24-30, Matthew 13:36-43

June 21, 2020. Lutheran tradition teaches us that we're all sinner and all saint. We all get lost, make mistakes, and harm others. Pastor Meagan's sermon today is on how painful it must have been for Saul to realize the harm he had done to people of God, getting called out, and being guided into a new path forward.Readings: Romans 6:1b-11, Romans 7:19, Matthew 10:24-39*** Transcript ***As I read the readings for today, the claim that Paul makes that all of us human beings are sinful, that we aren’t perfect, jumped out at me. As I started to reflect on those times when I have been publicly “not perfect,” the first story that came to my mind happened my very first Sunday when I was on internship. I was a basket case, and I was struggling to make them think that I knew exactly what I was doing. I was helping to serve communion, and when the line had finished I headed back up the stairs, three levels, to the high part of the altar in that sanctuary. And I turned around and I noticed that, to my surprise I was alone — at the top of the world. The rest of the communion serving team was not done yet. Not even close. I was mortified. The sacristan for the day, noticing my plight, moved his finger in a circle at me. And so I turned around, with my back to the congregation, and I experienced immediate relief. I could no longer see anyone watching me.After worship was over, the sacristan came to me and said, “Sometimes it helps just not to look at anyone else.” Several other people besides that sacristan also made a point of coming up to me and commenting about what had happened — not to make sure I knew I had screwed up (because I certainly knew), but to make sure that I knew it was okay, that we were Lutherans and there is plenty of grace to be spared for a new vicar. It is not the first time that I made a mistake in public, and it has not been the last. And I'm sure there will be plenty more to come. And it is always nice to remember that we are Lutherans, and that grace abounds. But as I continued to reflect on these readings I realized that there was a much deeper message, burning, as Jeremiah so powerfully describes, to be told. While I was working at the Basilica, I had a phone call one day with a parishioner. The details aren’t important but suffice it to say, I spoke that day out of a broken place, a sinful place, in myself — and in so doing, I deeply wounded her. And she called me out. In no uncertain terms, she named for me exactly how I had sounded, and how it had hurt her. And something in me broke. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. A part of me, when I think about it now looking back, died in that moment — a part of me that needed to die, and had for a long time, to make room for healing, and new life, to emerge. And although I couldn’t make sense of it at the time, Paul’s letter to the Romans names this very real part of our human experience — the truth of our brokenness, our sinfulness, as human beings — alongside our very deep capacity for change, to grow, to live into new ways of being in the world. And Paul himself was no stranger to this reality. His life as Saul, as a young religious leader, was devoted to uphold all that he had been taught was right and true and good, and destroy all that threatened that. He had, in fact, been complicit in torture and murder of those who had the courage to follow Jesus. Saul was, for everything he knew, like many of us, a good person. He was well-respected by his peers, educated, faithful. He was complacent, as it is so easy for us to be, in his confidence that he was on the right path. Saul, in his zeal, became so caught up in his own experience and his own convictions, that he completely missed the horror of the events that were unfolding right in front of him. And then, all at once, he got called out. He actually heard Jesus speak, telling him that he had been exactly wrong, and in murdering God’s people, he had in fact been murdering Jesus himself. And Saul was struck blind, made vulnerable, compelled to stop what he was doing, and be guided into a new path forward. We can imagine how painful it must have been for Saul, to realize the harm he had done to people of God. And we, living our human lives, have those moments too. We live our lives, thinking that we're on the right path, doing the right thing, and then something happens and we wake up, and realize somewhere along the way, we got lost. We, perhaps without realizing it, acted out of fear. Or a belief that we would not have enough, if we ensured that others had what they needed. Or a mistaken notion that our experience of the world was shared by everyone. Like Saul, we may have gotten so focused on our own experience that we missed the pain, even the horrors, of events right in front of us. And somewhere along the way, family of faith, we have all made mistakes and harmed others, sometimes those we hold most dear. And then like Saul, we are awakened. Family members or friends or coworkers may let us know that something we did was hurtful, and they're in pain. With ears that are opened by George Floyd’s calls for his mother, we hear our black siblings as they tell us one more time the realities of racism, and what has been happening to them while we in our ignorance have been looking the other way. With our eyes focused on our health care system and essential workers, our vision sharpened by our experience of COVID-19, we can see more clearly the injustices that exist as so many people live without health care, or a living wage, or safe and affordable housing, or the ability to care for themselves and their families when they are sick.We are awakened, as Saul was, and something within us dies. This was such a profound change for Saul that he even got a new name, and Saul became Paul. What needed to die was gone, and new life could begin. As Paul writes, “The death Jesus died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” And we hear in Paul’s letter just a few verses after today’s reading that this was not the one and only time this process needed to happen for him. “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do,” he writes in Romans, chapter 7. Paul struggled, as we all do. He claimed his need for God — and we all need God, to bring healing and transformation and new life. And just as I experienced in my internship congregation on my first Sunday, and with the parishioner from the Basilica when I called her back and apologized for the profound harm I had done and shared what I had learned, there is abundant grace. Our readings today, as violent and as scary as they may seem, remind us of this. "A disciple is not above the teacher," Jesus tells his disciples. "It is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher." Jesus never expected his disciples to be perfect. Paul makes it clear that we can’t be. Lutheran tradition teaches us that we're all sinner and all saint. We all get lost, make mistakes, and harm others. And we all have the capacity to live in Christ, who brings healing and new life as the brokenness dies. We all have, as Jeremiah prophesies, the fire in our belly that burns with truth and justice and hope, opening our hearts to see our neighbors with the compassion of God and to see ourselves in that same world. Thanks be to God.*** Keywords ***2020, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, transcript, podcast, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Romans 6:1b-11, Romans 7:19, Matthew 10:24-39, coronavirus

A Bigger Life Prayer and Bible Devotionals with Pastor Dave Cover
Today's discussion and prayer is on Psalm 118. We know that Jesus immersed himself in this particular psalm because he quotes two separate verses from it on two separate occasions in the gospels (v. 22 in Matt 21:42, and v. 26 in Matt 23:39). No doubt Psalm 118 was a place Jesus spent much time in personal meditation and prayer. We should do the same. We know that Jesus quoted from the Old Testament frequently throughout his ministry, but did you know that he referenced the Psalms more than any other book? The Psalms were integral in Jesus's prayer life. They were inspired by the Holy Spirit for our sake, to enrich our own prayer lives. The foundational promise and call to response in this psalm is in the first verse, which is also repeated verbatim in the last verse. Psalm 118:1 ESV “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” This is a must-have belief for anyone hoping to experience the reality of who God is in their life. To see our horizontal circumstances through the vertical reality of all that The I AM is for us in Christ. Other verses discussed and prayed through in this episode: Psalm 118:6–7 ESV The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper. Psalm 118:22 ESV The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Psalm 118:25 ESV Save us, we pray, O LORD! Psalm 118:26 ESV Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! Psalm 118:28–29 ESV You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Understanding Scripture and its teachings can often be confusing, and even unsettling. Even when we try to interpret certain stories or letters charitably, we can frequently find ourselves bewildered. How do we deal with these difficult passages? This week, Vince and Jo consider a question about Jesus' interaction with the Canaanite or "Syrophoenician," woman (recorded in Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30), where Christ refers to a suffering woman and the Canaanite people she is part of as "dogs." How can we make sense of such seemingly harsh words and treatment? How do we square this with a Christ we say is full of love for the downtrodden? What is going on in this story? Is Jesus racist? Question Asked in This Episode: "For quite some time now, I've been developing a workshop that focuses on improving race relations within the church. As the workshop primarily focuses on Scripture in the Bible that deals with how God wants us to think about and to respond to racism, classism, and sexism, among other things, there is one passage that continues to perplex me as I study these topics: In Matthew chapter 15 verses 21-28—the story of the Syrophoenician woman—even though Jesus compliments her amazing faith, at face value it can appear as if he is also insulting and making racial slurs against her when referring to his own people, Israel, as children, and the woman's people as dogs." This Sunday, July 7, we will continue our sermon series “Habits of Grace” as pick up with our 5th habit: "Connect with Others for Growth and Accountability." God never intended for us to go through life on our own. He created us to be in right relationship with Him and others, which requires our ongoing commitment and a lot of practice. One of God's key "learning laboratories" available to us at New Hope is Connect Groups for growth and accountability. To be better prepared read these texts: [John 13:34-35, Acts 2:42, Romans 12:9-10, and Hebrews 10:24-25](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+13%3A34-35%2C+Acts+2%3A42%2C+Romans+12%3A9-10%2C+Hebrews+10%3A24-25&version=NLT) Watch the Video and more here: http://findnewhope.com/resources/sermons/ --- Donate via PayPal to support the podcasts and the Technical Arts Ministry of New Hope! https://goo.gl/o2a9oU Subscribe to our New Hope UMC Sunday Sermon Podcast on: * Apple Podcasts - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/new-hope-umc-sunday-sermon-podcast/id1093524425?mt=2 * Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/2habfMJ6S8jirQnpimNwHg?si=nKlvpZRrQYKnsJSJc6Du3Q) * Stitcher Radio - http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=87782&refid=stpr) * Subscribe on Android - http://subscribeonandroid.com/findnewhopesunday.libsyn.com/rss * Google Play - https://play.google.com/music/m/Ijonx62ajd5qwxv3qgxkizdqnva?t=New_Hope_UMC_Sunday_Sermon_Podcast) * YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFZw6j-ZlY45HU-m-lQ5XYuphsrbeJMsk Connect with New Hope: * Website: http://www.findnewhope.com/ * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brandonchurchfl * Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/findnewhope

Today, some believe that Jesus never proclaimed equality with God. The religious leaders who had Jesus crucified would say otherwise. Sacred Reading 00:00-21:44, Conversation 21:44-01:09:22Shawn & Damaris Smith, Now Is The Time MissionIn the conversation for Sunday, December 3, 2017, special guests, Shawn & Damaris Smith, share with us an update on the impact of last summer’s mission to Guatemala and issue an invitation for the mission this summer 2018. Shawn also encouraged us that if we are feeling like we can’t do a missions trip, the truth is, “You can do it!”“Now is the time for missions, because there is never a good time to go.”Sacred ReadingA note about the recording of the Sacred Reading:The reader will pause between each of the four readings. The pauses have been left in the recording so that the listener can experience the rhythm of the gathering and even participate in the reading. Below are the guidelines for each of the four readings of the practice. - Read: Read the passage and receive it as God’s message to you. - Reflect: Read the passage again and look for the word or phrase that the Holy Spirit highlights to your heart. - Respond: Take the highlighted words and make them a prayer. - Rest: Rest your heart on God’s promises.“And the one also who had received the one talent came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’“But his master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked, lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I scattered no seed. Then you ought to have put my money in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’“For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.Matthew 25:24-29 (NASB)
