Faith of Our Fathers: Jacob (Genesis 25–32) - Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla
Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla joins the BTM podcast to discuss his contribution to the book Homiletics and Hermeneutics: Four Views on Preaching Today. Dr. Kuruvilla talks about the importance of privileging the text of Scripture, a Christiconic view of interpreting God's Word, and how we as believers can better learn to live in God's ideal world through Christ's example and the power of the Holy Spirit.
What is preaching? What makes a great sermon? In this last episode on influential books, Cole and Terry discuss John Piper's Expository Exultation, Tim Keller's Preaching, and Abraham Kuruvilla's A Manual for Preaching to model going from the text to the sermon and how to make the sermon stick.
Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla speaks on what we can always expect from God.

In this episode, I just sat in the chair, pulled a book on preaching off my shelf and decided to speak off the cuff about preaching. Abraham Kuruvilla's definition of preaching: Biblical preaching, by a leader of the church, in a gathering of Christians for worship, is the communication of the thrust of a pericope of Scripture discerned by theological exegesis, and of its application to that specific body of believers, that they may be conformed to the image of Christ, for the glory of God—all in the power of the Holy Spirit. As the human body is a single organism made up of many individual parts, so too is Christ's body, the church (1 Corinthians 12:12–31). Also like the human body which will fail to function properly if a single part goes missing, likewise the church is less than it should be if even one member fails to provide their unique and divinely-endowed contribution. Today on the podcast, Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla helps us think through right functioning of the body of Christ, our individual need of the whole, and our unique contributions to it. In particular, Dr. Kuruvilla describes and discusses his gift of singleness (click here for his article on the topic), how he understands it, and how God has used it in his life to bless the church and to serve Christ. Is the big idea more helpful or hurtful to listeners? Matt Woodley explores this question with Abe Kuruvilla, Senior Research Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Ministries at Dallas Theological Seminary. Abe said "The big idea is ultimately a creation of the preacher. It's not in the text. It's something the preacher creates." He argues that the text isn't a plain glass window to look through; but a stained glass window to look at.
