Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Father’s Day can be a complicated day—one that quietly reopens wounds many people work hard to keep closed. While social media fills with tributes to loving dads, laughter around backyard grills, and heartfelt cards, there are countless individuals listening today who feel something very different: grief over a father who has died, sadness for a relationship that never was, pain from abandonment or abuse, or longing for a father they never knew. If Father’s Day brings mixed emotions, confusion, or even dread, I want you to know - you are not alone, and there is nothing wrong with you. On this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective, we will gently explore why Father’s Day can be emotionally charged, how our experiences with our earthly fathers shape our emotional and spiritual lives, and - most importantly - how healing is possible. We will talk about how God meets us in the complexity, how He reveals Himself as the perfect Father when human fathers fall short, and how your story does not end with the wounds you’ve endured. We are talking about When Father’s Day Is Complicated: How to Heal from Wounds and Discover God as the Perfect Father Quotables from the episode: For many people, Father's Day isn't just a holiday. It's a trigger. Scripture reminds us that God is not intimidated by our complicated emotions. He invites honesty, not performance. That doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're human. Many people don't realize that their struggle to experience God as loving isn't a spiritual failure. It's often a relational wound. Recognizing this connection isn't about blaming. It's about understanding. One of the most important healing steps is learning to separate who God is from who your father was. God does not inherit the flaws of human fathers. Healing begins when we allow God to redefine fatherhood for us. God does not merely fill the gap. He heals the wound. Healing doesn't erase the past, but it loosens its grip. You are seen by a Father who delights in you, not because of what you do, but because of who you are. Scripture References: Matthew 7:9–11 “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Psalm 27:10 – “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.” Psalm 68:5 – that He is “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling.” Recommended Resources: Free Stress-Response Personality Assessment Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner AWSA 2024 Golden Scroll Christian Living Book of the Year and the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Christian Living and Non-Fiction categories YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, AWSA Member of the Year, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Devotional category, the 2023 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 1 YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 2 Revive & Thrive Women’s Online Conference Revive & Thrive Summit 2 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 2 Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2020 Best Christian Living Book First Place, the first place winner for the Best Christian Living Book, the 2020 Carolina Christian Writer’s Conference Contest winner for nonfiction, and winner of the 2021 Christian Literary Award’s Reader’s Choice Award in all four categories for which it was nominated (Non-Fiction Victorious Living, Christian Living Day By Day, Inspirational Breaking Free and Testimonial Justified by Grace categories.) As the world turns its attention to the FIFA World Cup, millions of people find themselves doing something unexpected: praying.Whether it's a last-minute goal, a penalty kick, or a championship dream, moments of competition often reveal what matters most to us. In this message, we explore what our prayers say about the condition of our hearts and what Jesus teaches about authentic prayer.Drawing from Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane, we discover that prayer is more than asking God for favorable outcomes. It is an invitation into a deeper relationship that transforms our desires, strengthens our faith, and aligns our hearts with God's purposes. What happens when the victory we're seeking isn't the victory God is shaping us for? How do we pray through disappointment, loss, uncertainty, and competition? And what does it mean to trust God regardless of the final score?Join us as we reflect on prayer, surrender, character formation, and the lasting victory found in Christ.Scripture References:Matthew 6:21Luke 22:42Romans 8:28Whether you're celebrating a win, enduring a loss, or simply navigating life's challenges, this message reminds us that our greatest identity is not found in results—but in being children of God.Visit Us at oacvancouver.ca We believe that Jesus is needed and relevant for people in Vancouver today. What Actually Happens When You Get Baptized? Most of us have watched a baptism. The water, the moment, the applause. But what if there's something happening beneath the surface that most people never stop to think about? Here's something worth sitting with: repentance is the first word of the gospel. The first word out of John the Baptist's mouth. The first word of Jesus' public ministry. The first instruction after the resurrection. The first word of the first Christian sermon. Baptism is where that repentance goes public — where an inward decision becomes an outward declaration. In this message, Pastor Aaron McRae unpacks the scene in Matthew 3 where Jesus steps into the Jordan River — and what that moment reveals about three things baptism marks fresh in every believer's life: a new identity in Christ, an inauguration into life and ministry, and a living illustration of the gospel itself.Whether you were baptized decades ago or are still figuring out what you believe, this is an invitation to remember what that moment meant — and to keep living like it actually does.
Are you being set up? In this week of our series, "Encounters with Jesus," we dive into Matthew 4 to look at the infamous showdown between Jesus and the devil in the wilderness. Often, we think temptation is just about breaking rules—but it's actually a calculated attack on our identity. When you are hungry, tired, and isolated, you become a sitting duck for the enemy. Through the three specific traps laid for Jesus, we discover the exact blueprint the enemy uses against us today: the temptation to be satisfied, the temptation to be awesome, and the temptation to be powerful. If the enemy wanted to catch you, what bait would he use? Watch to learn how to identify the triggers, illusions, and rationalizations of temptation, and how to stand firm on the truth of God's Word.
Who is the source of your provision? In this message, Approaching God: Supernatural Provision, Pastor Jerry Dirmann teaches that God desires to be our ultimate provider—not money, possessions, or our own abilities. Through Scripture, discover how seeking God's Kingdom first, honoring Him with your resources, and trusting Him as your source positions you to experience His supernatural provision and faithfulness. What if the biggest changes in your life started with the smallest acts of obedience? In the final message of our "Stories Jesus Told" series, Pastor Stephen Mizell explores two of Jesus' shortest parables—the mustard seed and the yeast—and reveals a powerful truth: God's Kingdom often grows through small, consistent acts of faithfulness rather than spectacular moments. Whether you're struggling with forgiveness, prayer, anxiety, purpose, family relationships, or spiritual growth, this message will encourage you to trust God with the small beginnings that lead to lasting transformation. KEY TAKEAWAYS • Small acts of obedience create Kingdom impact over time • God celebrates planting while we often celebrate harvest • The Kingdom of God grows through faithfulness, not spectacle • Consistency is more powerful than intensity • Spiritual growth is meant to benefit others, not just ourselves • God transforms the world from the inside out • Ordinary people become effective when they allow an extraordinary God to work through them • Every great change begins with a single step of obedience SCRIPTURE REFERENCES • Matthew 13:31-33 • Psalm 78:2 • Ezekiel 17 • 1 Corinthians 3 Open Door Church is a multi-campus church in eastern North Carolina committed to sharing the hope of Jesus and helping people take their next step in faith. What foundation are you building your life on? In this message from our "Stories Jesus Told" series, John Lassiter explores Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish builders from Matthew 7:24-27. Through personal stories, practical application, and biblical truth, this sermon challenges us to move beyond simply hearing God's Word and begin living it through obedience, spiritual disciplines, and faithful action. Storms are inevitable in life—but when your foundation is built on Christ, you can stand firm no matter what comes your way. Key Takeaways: • Storms are certain, but God remains faithful through them • Following Jesus doesn't eliminate storms—it provides a storm-proof foundation • Spiritual resilience is built through daily obedience and discipline • What is hidden beneath the surface determines what stands during life's challenges • The difference between wisdom and foolishness is not hearing God's Word—it's doing it • Spiritual maturity is measured by obedience, not simply knowledge • God honors the unseen work of prayer, Scripture, worship, repentance, and integrity Scripture References: • Matthew 7:24-27 • Matthew 11:28-30 • John 16:33 • 1 John 2:15-17 • James 1:21-22 • Matthew 9:35-38 If this message encouraged you, be sure to: • Like this video • Subscribe to our channel • Share this message with someone who needs encouragement • Leave a comment about what God is teaching you through this series Open Door Church is a multi-campus church in eastern North Carolina committed to sharing the hope of Jesus and helping people take their next step in faith. In this episode of the Lead Ministry Podcast, Josh Denhart and Bill Van Kirk break down the specific recruiting resources every ministry leader should have built before they ever pick up the phone. They explore how pre-prepared tools — from slot sheets to pushback scripts to draft follow-up emails — transform recruiting from a dreaded chore into a confident, efficient system. If you've ever sat down to make recruiting calls and felt completely unprepared, this episode will hand you the exact toolkit to change that.Key Topics Covered→ Slot Sheets – Knowing exactly how many people you need and where, so you can recruit with precision and report with confidence→ The Down-Sell Strategy – How to redirect a "no" into a smaller yes using pre-built offering lists, just like selling magazine subscriptions→ Pre-Prepared Follow-Up – Draft emails for yes, no, and "let me think about it" responses that you can send within minutes of hanging upKey Quote "God impressed upon my heart two questions: Josh, what did volunteering at this church do for you? And do you think I can do that in every one of those people I'm going to find for you?"Scripture References Matthew 9:37-38 – "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."Takeaway Recruiting isn't about being pushy or salesy — it's about being prepared. When Josh reframed recruiting as a pathway to discipleship, everything changed. The tools didn't make him a robot; they made him efficient enough to be fully present on every call. Most of us spend our lives trying to be seen.Seen at work. Seen online. Seen in relationships. Seen for what we do, what we accomplish, and how hard we try.But what if God's definition of greatness looks completely different from ours?In this message, we dive into Jesus' parable of the workers in the vineyard and discover a Kingdom truth that flips our culture upside down: God rewards faithfulness, not visibility. While the world celebrates platform, applause, and influence, Jesus honors humility, obedience, and hidden faithfulness. If you've ever felt overlooked, forgotten, underappreciated, or exhausted trying to prove your worth — this message is for you.We talk about:• why we crave recognition so deeply• the danger of living for applause• how obscurity can actually shape your character• the hidden things Heaven celebrates that earth ignores• and why your purpose is bigger than your platform“Just because no one sees it doesn't mean God misses it.”Whether you're raising kids, serving quietly, struggling with comparison, or simply trying to stay faithful in a loud world, we believe this message will encourage you and point you back to Jesus. If this message speaks to you, share it with someone who needs the reminder that God still sees them.Scripture References: Matthew 20:1–16; Matthew 6:4; 1 Samuel 16:7; John 5:44; Philippians 2:3–8
What kind of foundation are you building your life on?In this message, Pastor Aaron Pennington concludes our Sermon on the Mount series by teaching through Matthew 7:24–29. Jesus tells the story of two builders: one who built on rock and one who built on sand. Both heard the same words, but only one put them into practice. This sermon challenges us to move beyond spiritual complacency, good intentions, and consumer Christianity, and to become people who don't just hear the words of Jesus but live them out.Pastor Aaron also speaks to Trace Church about unity, ownership, generosity, and what it means to build a stronger foundation as a church for the future.Scripture References:Matthew 7:24–29Psalm 1John 17Trace Church | Colorado Springs, CONew episodes every week.
What does it actually mean to live a blessed life? Most people think blessing looks like comfort, success, and approval — but Jesus completely flips that idea upside down.In this message from Matthew 5:7–12, Pastor Mark Cummins walks through the final Beatitudes and reveals four practical, life-changing principles that define what it looks like to truly follow Jesus — not just on the surface, but from the inside out. Here's what we unpack in this message:1. Mirror God's Mercy to Others Bitterness feels like punishment for someone else — but it's actually a prison you build for yourself. The blessed life has open hands, not clenched fists. When you've been forgiven much, you're freed to forgive much.2. Daily Surrender Yourself to God God isn't interested in your highlight reel. He's after your heart. Purity isn't about perfection — it's about undivided devotion. And the parts of yourself you keep hiding are the parts He can't heal.3. Promote the Peace of God You don't win people by winning arguments. Peacemakers aren't people who avoid conflict — they're people who refuse to add fuel to fires Jesus already died to put out.4. Focus on Eternity, Living for Christ Today Persecution isn't a sign you're doing something wrong — it might be a sign you're doing something right. When you live for the applause of heaven, you stop needing the approval of people.Whether you're burned out from people-pleasing, stuck in unforgiveness, or wrestling with whether following Jesus is really worth the cost — this message is for you.
Episode DescriptionIn this episode of the Lead Ministry Podcast, Josh Denhart and Vance tackle the five core reasons volunteers say no — and what it takes to make recruiting an easy yes. They explore why guilt-based recruiting never works long-term, offering a practical framework for building the kind of ministry environment people actually want to join.If you've ever felt like pulling teeth trying to get people to serve, this episode will show you exactly what's standing in the way and how to fix it.Key Topics Covered→ The Five Reasons People Say No – Reputation, unclear roles, unclear vision, no winning team, and lack of relational equity→ Making Yes Easy – Clear structure, simple job descriptions, ministry checklists, tours, leveraging testimonies, and closing the onboarding gap→ Recruiting to Vision, Not Need – Why twice as many people signed up when one church shifted from guilt to vision-based recruitingKey Quote "People aren't moved by a need — they always feel like somebody else is going to fulfill it. People want to join a team that's thriving."Scripture References Matthew 9:37-38 – "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."Takeaway If volunteers keep saying no, the solution isn't to ask louder — it's to fix what you're offering. Clear structure lowers fear and builds confidence. Simple job descriptions remove ambiguity. And when people can see your ministry in action through tours and testimonies, the yes becomes almost automatic.Call to Action We hope this episode encourages and equips you. What road are you walking down?In this message from the Sermon on the Mount, Dr. Trent Langhofer teaches through Matthew 7 as Jesus contrasts the wide road that leads to destruction with the narrow way that leads to life. This sermon explores drifting versus intentional living, the voices shaping our decisions, and the difference between knowing about Jesus and truly knowing Him. Through the story of Chuck Colson and the words of Jesus, Dr. T reminds us that the narrow road may be difficult, but it leads to real life, purpose, and transformation.Scripture References:Matthew 7:13–27John 10Jeremiah 29James 1Trace Church | Colorado Springs, CONew episodes every week.
The second half of the Perrys' conversation with Matt Chandler is a deeper discussion of the Beatitudes of Matthew 5. For example, the Bible says, “Blessed are those who mourn,” but what are we to mourn, and how do we mourn well? Matt explains that we mourn our own sin, and we grieve the broken world around us. Comfort is found in the hard work of mourning, and the consequence of not mourning is distance from Jesus. Beyond mourning, Matt and the Perrys also explore meekness, a thirst for righteousness, mercy, peacemaking, and persecution. In this episode of the Lead Ministry Podcast, Josh Denhart and Bill Van Kirk unpack the Puffer Fish Principle — a nature-inspired framework for attracting the right volunteers to your ministry. They explore how the environments we create communicate volumes before we ever say a word, offering practical insights for ministry leaders who want to stop repelling potential team members and start drawing them in.If you've ever wondered why people keep saying no to serving, this episode will equip you with a fresh lens on what your ministry is really communicating.Key Topics Covered→ The Puffer Fish Principle – How a tiny fish's elaborate design teaches us about attracting volunteers through order and excellence→ The Bowerbird Basics – Why appearance, decoration, and presentation differentiate you from every other option competing for a volunteer's time→ Repel vs. Recruit – How disorganization, chaos, and the "hot mess express" subconsciously push people awayKey Quote "Current chaos communicates future chaos. Order communicates future peace."Scripture References Matthew 9:37-38 – "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field."Takeaway Volunteers live in a chaotic world. If your ministry can bring order in the midst of that chaos — clean spaces, crisp communication, logical systems — you're sending a psychological signal that says, "We have our stuff together, and there's more where that came from." After more than two decades leading a church – and through his own faith journey, too – Pastor Matt Chandler says confidently that, “Come what may, God is at work.” In this conversation on sanctification, Matt, Jackie and Preston explore the Beatitudes of Matthew 5, not as a checklist of spiritual goals but a portrait of a person Jesus is creating as we mature in Christ. The Christian life isn't about wins and losses; it's about staying tethered to Jesus through the highs and lows. Keep saying yes to Him, and He'll use it all to form you. This is part 1 of a 2-part conversation. What if Jesus calls you His, even when the world has called you something else? In this message, we walk through two powerful encounters in Matthew 9. A desperate father willing to risk everything for his daughter… and a woman who had been suffering, unseen and labeled “unclean” for years. Both come to Jesus with nothing left but faith. This sermon is a reminder that Jesus isn't afraid of your mess. He doesn't call you by your past, your pain, or your labels. He calls you His. No matter how far you feel, no matter what you've been told, you are not too far gone. The Son of Righteousness still brings healing, restoration, and new life. It's not over until He says it's over. Have you ever gotten frustrated watching someone else receive a blessing you felt they didn't earn? In this first message of our new series Stories Jesus Told, Pastor Stephen Mizell unpacks the Parable of the Vineyard Workers from Matthew 20 — and what it reveals about God's scandalous, unmerited grace. Whether you've been following Jesus for decades or you're just now getting over, this message is for you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: God's kingdom doesn't operate on human fairness — it operates on grace Comparison transforms a generous gift into a perceived grievance You can keep score or you can experience grace, but you can't do both Late doesn't disqualify you in the Kingdom of God — it only invites you We serve not to earn God's love, but as an overflow of the grace we've already received The greatest danger isn't missing a reward — it's working in the vineyard and missing God's heart SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Matthew 19:27 — Peter's question: "What's in it for us?" Matthew 20:1–16 — The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard SERIES: Stories Jesus Told — a series through the parables of Jesus exploring grace, vocation, anxiety, purpose, forgiveness, and family.
In this message titled Now or Later, Pastor Alvin unpacks the tension between living for what we can receive now and what God has promised later. Jesus makes it clear that both are available, but we don't get both. This message challenges us to examine our motives, trust that God is a rewarder, and choose what lasts over what's immediate. Because what God has prepared for you will always be worth the wait. Jesus didn't come for the perfect. He came for the broken. In Matthew 9:9–13, Jesus calls Matthew, a hated tax collector, and everything changes. This message reminds us that no one is too far gone, no sin is too great, and Jesus is still the friend of sinners. Your past doesn't disqualify you. It's the very place Jesus meets you.
All sin separates us from God. Some sins—pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, lust, gluttony—can destroy us. Today we're going to conclude by talking about living in the power of virtue. We want to avoid the assumption that the answer to vice is simply to exhibit virtue… to “just be good.” Living in victory over your brokenness does not come from a better you, it comes from a new you who is transformed by Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Three commitments to help us learn how to live in that power are found in the book of Colossians: live in your new identity, put vice to death, and be faithful in renewal. It all comes down to this moment. In this powerful Resurrection Sunday message, Pastor Stephen Mizell unpacks why the resurrection of Jesus isn't just a tradition or a good story—it's the foundation of everything we believe. If the tomb is empty, it changes your past, your present, and your future. This message will challenge what you believe about Jesus and invite you to experience His power—not just someday, but right now. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Christianity rises and falls on the resurrection—not good teaching or tradition The empty tomb is evidence, not just a symbol The stone was rolled away so we could see in, not so Jesus could get out Fear and joy can coexist in moments of transformation Resurrection power doesn't just affect eternity—it changes your life today You don't need more willpower—you need God's power The same power that raised Jesus is available to you now SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: Matthew 20:1–16 Matthew 28:1–10 Ephesians 1:19–20 Romans 10:9
|| ABOUT THIS MESSAGE || What if the stone that sealed your worst failures could be rolled away in one divine moment? In Sunday's powerful Easter message, Pastor Jerry unpacked how Jesus didn't just emerge from death, but called his scattered, frightened disciples "my brothers," reinstating them despite their abandonment. Don't let this life-changing encounter pass you by—dive in now!|| ABOUT BEACH CHURCH || We exist to reach, raise up, and release followers of Jesus who change the world. This Easter, we celebrate the greatest miracle of all — forgiveness of sin through Jesus. In Matthew 9, a group of friends does whatever it takes to get a hurting man to Jesus, believing He can change everything. What the man needed most wasn't physical healing — it was forgiveness. Jesus shows us that our greatest need is not self-improvement but a Savior. Because of His life, death and resurrection, we are forgiven, free from shame and made new. There is more grace in Jesus than sin in us. If you have never surrendered your life to Christ, today could be your day. And if you have trusted Him but never been baptized, today is your day to take that step.
Have you ever wondered why financial breakthrough feels so close yet so far? Bob and Linda Lotich reveal that God is constantly testing us with money—and most of us don't even realize it's happening. In this eye-opening conversation, they break down the three distinct money tests every believer faces, how to identify which one you're in right now, and what God is trying to teach you through it. What You'll Learn: The Three Tests - The Struggling Test - When you have less than you think you need The Surplus Test - When extra money comes your way The Stable Test - When nothing has changed for years Key Insights: Why the habits you build in struggle carry you into surplus The George Mueller story that will transform how you pray about provision How to know if you're in a "rest season" or need to take action Why stability might be the sneakiest test of all The practical "50/50 rule" for handling raises and windfalls How to create your own "stack of stones" to remember God's faithfulness Powerful Quotes: "The habits that we build in the struggle are the habits that carry us into the surplus time." - Bob "We've just been through this too many times." - Bob (during a financial crisis moment) "What do I need to do the job that God's asked me to do? And then the rest of it can just go." - Linda "It's an open book test and you have the teacher who wants to give you the answers." - Bob Biblical Foundations: Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) The Rich Fool (Luke 12) George Mueller's radical faith Israelites and the manna James 1:2-5 on trials and wisdom Action Steps: Identify which test you're in right now - Are you struggling, experiencing surplus, or in a stable season? Create your modern "stack of stones" - Write down a timeline of how God has provided for you in the past Do a self-evaluation - How are you handling your current test? Ask God for wisdom - Is this a season to rest or a season to take action? Set up structures for surplus - Consider implementing the "50/50 rule" for future raises The Bottom Line: You don't have to pass these tests perfectly—none of us do. But God is using money to teach you to trust Him more deeply, steward more faithfully, and expand your belief in what He can do. The question isn't whether you're being tested. What happens when praise turns into pressure? On Palm Sunday, the crowd welcomed Jesus as King with shouts of "Hosanna!"—but just days later, many of those same voices cried out "Crucify Him." In this message, Pastor Stephen Mizell challenges us to examine the tension between our expectations of Jesus and the reality of who He truly is. Are we following Jesus… or just our expectations of Him?
Storms are inevitable, but fear doesn't have to be. In Matthew 8, Jesus reminds us that following Him will cost us everything — but He is faithful through it all. Even when life feels uncertain, overwhelming or out of control, we can trust that God is still sovereign and still good. The same Jesus who calmed the wind and the waves is able to bring peace to the storms we face today. God never wastes a hurt.
All sin separates us from God. Some sins—pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, lust, gluttony—can destroy us. Jesus gives us virtues that overcome these vices. This 8-week series examines the Seven Deadly Sins not to shame, but to reveal our need for grace. Each week shows how these sins infiltrate life, harm relationships, and distance us from God—and how Jesus provides the way out. The final week focuses on virtue and victorious life in Christ. This week we continue our series on the 7 Deadly Sins by looking at lust. Like every God-given desire, sexual desire can become distorted, and in our culture today those distortions run deep—impacting not only our spiritual lives but our communities as well. In this message we talk honestly about the struggle with lust while also pointing to the hope and freedom found in Christ. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Trials and crises are inevitable. Jesus warned us they would come. While we cannot choose the trials we face, we can choose how we respond to them and look at them as opportunities to grow and learn more about God. In this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective, I am joined by Lynne Rienstra, author of the inspiring book Sacred Refuge: Finding Unexpected Shelter in Your Crisis. Lynne shares how her personal life crisis became a gateway to discovering God’s indestructible shelter. Through her book, she introduces women to a sacred sisterhood that unites modern and biblical stories of overcoming fear, loss, debt, and loneliness. Together, we explore how God’s love and compassion provide a soul-safe refuge, even in the midst of the most difficult challenges. Quotables from the episode: When COVID hit and like a lot of people, I just kind of went under fear. And after a week of not sleeping well, not eating well, kind of like what's happening and what's coming, I said, "This is crazy. "I am a blood bought and beloved child of the living God. "I am not going to let the enemy have any more time in my headspace or my spirit. And it was a time to boot him out and say, “you're done. I will not live in fear.” The Bible actually says, do not fear 365 times, right? One for every day of the year. And that was over. And then I started realizing if I'm dealing with fear, maybe other women are dealing with fear and struggling to find this safe refuge in who God is for us. This is an invitation, as you mentioned, for women to come out of hiding, which is what fear, of course, puts us in, and into a soul -safe place that Jesus has built for us in the gospel. He is so good and so powerful he can actually use the worst of circumstances for our good, which is to draw us to himself and to make us more like Jesus. I've learned how to do this over the years, to identify his lies. And then because he's a liar and the father of lies, you flip them and you begin to hear in scripture and in the voice of the Lord, the truth. So, all three persons of the Trinity have something very specific to tell me about who I am. And that means that his Father's heart is delighted in us. That's the invitation to take off the masks. That's the freedom that Jesus has purchased for us. Crisis comes with a gift. It's the gift nobody wants. I've had seasons of my life as a Christian speaker, as a pastor's wife, as a leader, all those things, where I'm just like, you know, I just want to veg out. I just want to take three hours and binge something on Netflix, or I just want to eat that half thing, a half carton of ice cream, or I just, I want to check out. And I call those my other lovers, the things I go to apart from Jesus, who is our first love, Revelation tells us, right? - Yes. - When we turn to those other lovers over anything, overeating, over drinking, working, busy -ness can be another lover. Scripture References: Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Isaiah 61:10 “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” Isaiah 49:16 “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…” Psalm 91:1-16 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague. He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the calamity that destroys at noon. Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you. You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling—my refuge, the Most High—no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent. “Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him. When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.” Recommended Resources: Sacred Refuge: Finding Unexpected Shelter in Your Crisis by Lynne Rienstra Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free PDF Resource: How to Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Free Webinar: Help for When You’re Feeling Blue Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Lynne Rienstra: Website / Instagram Connect with Dr. Bengtson: Order Book Sacred Scars / Order Book The Hem of His Garment / Order Book Today is Going to be a Good Day / Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails / Website / Blog / Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson) / LinkedIn / Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast on Apple Guest: Lynne Rienstra serves Samaritan’s Purse as a regional director and has seen crises up close through her travels. Welcome to our new sermon series, Jesus is King. In today's message, Pastor Dustin takes us to Matthew 3 and the baptism of Jesus, where we see the foundation of Christ's identity and mission. Before Jesus ever performed a miracle, preached a sermon, or began His public ministry, the Father declared over Him: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus was affirmed before He ever achieved. This passage reminds us that approval comes before performance. We don't strive to earn God's love; we live from it. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive God's approval freely, not because we are perfect, but because Christ paid the price to set us free. Pastor Dustin also highlights the humility of Jesus. Though John questioned why Jesus would step into baptism, Jesus chose humility over status. He didn't save us from a distance. He entered fully into our world, stepping into the waters for us. Finally, we see that Jesus expressed His identity through visible obedience. What is settled privately must be lived publicly. The gospel transforms obedience from something we do to be loved into something we do because we are loved. Religion says: Obey and be loved. The gospel says: Be loved and obey. In this episode, we wrap up Matthew 6 with a message that might just save your life—literally. We look at the deadly effects of stress (which is really just worry) and how Jesus combats it with 7 Warnings. We explore why we often get life backward—keeping the things we should give away (money/stuff) and giving away the things we should keep (integrity/peace). We discuss the impossibility of serving two masters, why worry results in a "net loss" every time, and the ultimate cure found in Matthew 6:33. If you're ready to stop worrying about tomorrow and start trusting God for today, this episode is for you. Key Topics Covered: Stress Kills: The physical toll of worry and why Jesus addresses it so strongly. Treasure: We are "rich" by the world's standards, but are we rich toward God? The Backward Life: Why we guard our stuff but give away our integrity. God vs. Mammon: You cannot serve God and Money; not choosing is still a choice. Birds & Lilies: If God keeps the universe spinning, He can clothe you. The Solution: Seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Scripture References: Matthew 6:19-34 (Treasures in Heaven, Do Not Worry) Video Link: The Sermon for the Mounted - Part Seven: 7 Warnings About Worry
In the second installment of "The Sermon for the Mounted," we continue through Matthew 5 to uncover what Jesus really meant when He called His followers the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world." We live in a "lazy-boy world" where salt is just a cheap condiment, but in Jesus' day, it was essential for survival. This episode challenges us to check our own "flavor"—are you truly salty, or are you a "stud horse" that turned out to be a 2x4? We discuss the non-negotiable nature of identity in Christ, why "hiding your light" under a basket is not an option for the believer, and how your good deeds are actually just about making God look good to the people in your own house. Key Topics Covered: Salt in a Lazy-Boy World: Rediscovering the immense value and preserving power of the believer. The Authenticity Test: You are either salt or you aren't—you can't buy a stud horse and accept a 2x4. Sheep vs. Goats: The gravity of Jesus' separation of the "salty" from the "unsalty." Light of the World: Why your light is meant for your "house" (family, work, friends) first. Good Deeds: It's not about saving yourself; it's about showing God's glory. Scripture References: Matthew 5:13-16 (Salt and Light) Matthew 25:32-46 John 8:12
In this episode, we continue through Matthew 6 as Jesus moves from giving to praying. We uncover the "3 Keys to Answered Prayers"—and why trying to sound like a "Shakespearean Monk" isn't one of them. We break down the Lord's Prayer not just as a recitation, but as a model of boldness: asking the King to fulfill His promises. We also tackle the hard truth about a "Dead Heart" using the Dead Sea analogy (if you have no outlet for forgiveness, you become stagnant), and why keeping some parts of your walk with God—like fasting—completely private is essential for a healthy faith. Key Topics Covered: Authenticity: Your heartfelt private prayers weigh more than flowery public speeches. 3 Keys to Answered Prayers: Focus on God's approval, not man's applause. Just ask—He already knows what you need! Ask for what the Father wants, and you'll always get it. The Dead Heart: Why refusing to forgive proves a lack of spiritual life (The Dead Sea effect). Private Faith: There is a fine line between asking for prayer and asking for attention. Keep some things holy between you and God. Scripture References: Matthew 6:5-18 (Prayer and Fasting) Video Link: The Sermon for the Mounted: Part 6 - 3 Keys to Answered Prayers
In this episode, we move into Matthew 6, where Jesus issues a sharp warning: "Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly." We open with a story about a man who wouldn't stop interrupting Bible study to make himself look good, and the "spiritual throat punch" it took to silence him. This leads us into a discussion on why doing the right thing for the wrong reason (like "religi-selfies" or the 1,000-penny droppers) costs you your heavenly reward. We also explore a fresh perspective on the command to "not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing"—interpreting the Left Hand as your Logical Side (which makes excuses) and the Right Hand as your Faithful Side (which obeys God). Key Topics Covered: The Spiritual Throat Punch: How to deal with people seeking glory in the church. Watch Out: Why Jesus warns that hypocrisy isn't always obvious. Trumpets & Selfies: The danger of seeking public applause for your generosity. Left Hand vs. Right Hand: Left Hand (Logic): "I have too many bills," "It's too expensive." Logic never sees a miracle. Right Hand (Faith): "God gave it to me first." Faith lives in the miracle. Private Rewards: Why no recognition is actually the best recognition you can get. Scripture References: Matthew 6:1-4 Video Link: The Sermon for the Mounted: Part 5 - The Spiritual Throat Punch
In this episode, we wrap up Matthew 5 with a lesson on "Chicken Bowling"—a personal story about a rooster, a thrown chicken, and the excuses we make to justify our anger. Jesus moves from the Beatitudes and the Law into six practical illustrations, using the powerful formula: "You have heard it said... But I say..." We explore the difference between Human Effort (technically following the rules) and Complete Submission (giving your heart to God). Whether it's anger, lust, divorce, vows, or revenge, Jesus isn't looking for you to "try harder"—He's looking for a heart change that makes the rules obsolete. Key Topics Covered: Chicken Bowling: Why we use words like "frustrated" or "irritated" to cover up sinful anger. The "But I Say" Formula: Moving from the letter of the Law to the spirit of submission. Anger vs. Murder: Why holding onto anger is just as dangerous as the act itself. Lust & Adultery: Why fighting sin with willpower leaves you crippled, but submission leads to glory. Turning the Cheek: It's not pacifism; it's the power of being unoffendable. Loving Enemies: Loving others not because they are good, but because God loved us first. Scripture References: Matthew 5:21-48 Matthew 5:48 (The call to be perfect) Video Link: The Sermon for the Mounted: Part 4 - Chicken Bowling & True Submission
In this third installment of "The Sermon for the Mounted," we tackle one of the most misunderstood sections of Matthew 5: Jesus and the Law. Jesus didn't come to abolish the Old Testament; He came to finish what it started. In this episode, we break down what the Law and Prophets were actually for—proving we can't be perfect on our own and separating God's people from the "pigs" of the world. We discuss why the Old Testament still matters, why you should stop getting your theology from TikTok, and the one condition Jesus sets for entering heaven that seems impossible... until you understand the power of simple belief. Key Topics Covered: Abolish vs. Accomplish: Jesus didn't scrap the rules; He fulfilled the mission. The Purpose of the Law: To show us we can't earn righteousness and to set us apart from the world. Least vs. Great: Why ignoring the "small" commands (and getting theology from social media) makes you "least" in the Kingdom. The "But": Jesus' warning that our righteousness must exceed the Pharisees'. The Solution: How Abraham's faith (and yours) counts as the righteousness required to enter heaven. Scripture References: Matthew 5:17-20 Mark 9:7-8 James 2:23 Video Link: The Sermon for the Mounted: Part 3 - Fulfilling the Law
The Sermon for the Mounted: Part 1 In this series opener, we dive into Matthew 5, 6, and 7—The Sermon on the Mount. We look at these famous chapters not just as a list of blessings, but as a map for the journey every Christ-follower must take. Drawing from personal stories of branding calves and learning the hard way, we explore what it truly means to "mount up" and ride for the Lord. This episode breaks down the Beatitudes through a cowboy's lens—redefining meekness as "strength under control" (like a warhorse), understanding repentance as moving past the "hitching rail," and realizing that the greatest battle you'll face isn't against the world, but against the "old you." Key Topics: The Ground Crew vs. The Mounted: Moving from the crowd to the mountainside. Poor in Spirit: Realizing your need for God is the first step to mounting up. Meekness: It's not weakness; it's power under control. Purity & Peace: Guarding your heart and standing firm. Scripture References: Matthew 5:1-12, Psalm 37:29, 1 Corinthians 16:13, Ephesians 6:12.
Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Christmas is often called the most wonderful time of the year, yet for many, it’s also one of the most exhausting. Between the holiday to-do lists, family obligations, and the weight of expectations - both our own and others’- this season can leave us physically weary, emotionally drained, and even spiritually depleted. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. Today, we’re talking about how to release those expectations, embrace true rest in Christ, and find renewal in Him. If your soul feels weary, this conversation is especially for you. Today we’ll be talking about Hope for the Weary Soul. Quotables from the episode: It’s no surprise that Christmas can leave us feeling depleted. We put pressure on ourselves to create the perfect holiday - perfect gifts, perfect décor, perfect meals and table settings, and perfect gatherings. Social media only adds to this burden, making it seem like everyone else has it all together. But the truth is, exhaustion isn’t just about being physically tired. It’s about the weight we carry in our hearts - disappointment, grief, unmet expectations, and the struggle to meet everyone’s needs, often while neglecting our own. Jesus knew we would experience this. That’s why in Matthew 11:28, He says, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. He invites us to exchange our striving for His peace. But that requires us to let go of what we were never meant to carry in the first place. If you’re feeling weary, I encourage you to take a moment and ask yourself: What am I holding onto that God never asked me to carry? Maybe it’s the expectation of making everyone happy. Maybe it’s guilt over what you can’t do. Maybe it’s the grief of a loved one who isn’t here this Christmas. Whatever it is, the first step toward rest is recognizing what is making us weary and laying it at Jesus’ feet. Christmas is a busy time with many annual traditions and expectations. Others have expectations of us, we have expectations of others, and we have expectations of ourselves. As a result, sadly, it’s a recipe for failure. Part of the problem with expectations is that it’s impossible to meet unvoiced expectations. Everyone’s picture of the holiday varies. Some celebrate with family on Christmas Eve, others celebrate on Christmas. Some families draw names for gifts and possibly set a monetary limit, while other families give gifts to everyone. Some families get up early while others sleep in late. There is as much variability to the who, what, when, and where of the celebration as there are people celebrating. So how do we actually release those expectations? It starts with shifting our perspective. The world tells us Christmas is about performance, about how much we do, how beautiful we make it, how much we give. But God’s Word tells us something different. Christmas is about receiving. Receiving the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. Martha was distracted by all the preparations, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, simply being with Him. And what did Jesus say? Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Does that ever sound like you? I’ve certainly been guilty. This season, instead of being like Martha - running from one thing to the next, trying to make everything perfect, and meet a list of unspoken expectations - what if we chose to be like Mary? What if we sat at His feet, even in the middle of the chaos, and let His presence be enough? One practical way to do this is by setting boundaries. Say no to the things that drain you. Say yes to the things that nourish your soul. You don’t have to attend every event, bake every cookie, or create a Pinterest-worthy Christmas. Choose rest. Choose Jesus. Releasing expectations is only part of the equation. True renewal comes when we replace striving with abiding. John 15:4 says, Abide in me, and I in you. When we stay connected to Jesus, He renews our strength. One way to abide in Him this Christmas is by spending time in His Word. Even if it’s just a few minutes a day, let Scripture be your source of renewal. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. When we take time to be with God, He refreshes our weary souls. Christmas isn’t about what we do. It’s about what’s already been done for us through Christ. No matter how much is on your plate, you don’t have to carry it alone. Jesus came to bring us peace, not pressure. So this Christmas, let’s step out of striving and into His rest. Prayer for the Weary Soul Heavenly Father, we come before You weary, but we know that You are our source of strength. Help us release the burdens we were never meant to carry and rest in Your perfect peace. Teach us to abide in You, to embrace Your presence above all else, and to find renewal in Your love. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. In His name, we pray. Amen. Scripture References: Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Luke 10:38-42 tells the story of Mary and Martha. “Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” John 15:4 says, Abide in me, and I in you. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
