The Leon Morris Lecture in New Testament Studies 2024Ambassadors of Hope: A New Testament ThemeEpisode DescriptionThis lecture will explore one of the key themes of the New Testament – that of reconciliation. Reconciliation shows the heart of God, and the church is called to reflect that heart. This echoes something Leon Morris himself emphasized decades ago (although in a broader sense). The Bible calls it demonstrating an unconventional wisdom and it is our overall mission. It leads to hope and enablement, impacting how we present and reflect the gospel in a needy world. It calls us to word and deed convergence and the importance of practice and tone in engaging culture alongside what we believe.SpeakerDarrell L. While the Gospel of John tells us, the readers, straight up what we're meant to believe about Jesus, the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) tend to communicate these things indirectly. Married 48 years to Sally. 3 children and 5 grands. Grew up in Houston. Jewish on both sides of his family. Came to faith in Jesus in college. Seminary in Dallas. Doctorate in Aberdeen, Scotland. Interests in fields of academia: spent 90 minutes to 2 hours everyday for 14 years writing 2 extensive volumes on the Gospel of Luke. Words of encouragement: time with God. Never turn off the opportunity to hear from the Word of God. Message: We live in a country that is a democracy. We have free speech. Add technology, and we have fostered an atmosphere that can be counterproductive to the aroma of Christ. Jesus says if we follow Him, the world will persecute us. Do not be surprised. Do not fear. God has us in His hands. Listen to Dr. Bock and Mark share how to reach others through the power of love. People are not the enemy but the goal. Give like God gave.

Foreign policy strategist Andrew Marshall had a career that spanned seven decades from the late 1940s. He was hailed by a former KGB officer as ‘the grey cardinal, the éminence grise' of the US revolution of military affairs, and as ‘the great hero' of Chinese officers tracking developments in US military technology, claiming they had translated every word he wrote. Dr Thomas G Mahnken joins Talking Strategy to discuss his work and life. Andrew Marshall spent 25 years at the RAND Corporation, which developed methods of analysing the nature of the long-term competition between the US and the Soviet Union. He was recruited by Henry Kissinger to apply these approaches in the National Security Council, and later became the first Director of Net Assessment, a post he held for the next 43 years. His special approach to strategic thinking was interdisciplinary, questioning everything – including past successes – and encouraging out-of-the box thinking. This week's guest, Dr Thomas G Mahnken, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. He is a Senior Research Professor at the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at Johns Hopkins University's Paul H Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and currently serves as a member of the congressionally mandated 2022 National Defense Strategy Commission and as a member of the Army Science Board.

The culture's hostility toward God, Christians, and the Bible has rapidly increased in the last 20-30 years. This has caused confusion in the Church concerning how it engages. Lucky for us, there's been a game-changer of a book written on the topic of cultural engagement to help the Church see what biblical cultural engagement looks like. The book is Culture Intelligence: Living for God in a Diverse, Pluralistic World and was written by Dr. Darrell Bock, who also happens to be our guest today in this two-part episode!Dr. Darrell Bock is Executive Director of Cultural Engagement at the Hendricks Center for Leadership and Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary.Order your copy of Cultural IntelligenceCheck out the Table PodcastIf you enjoy this podcast and want others to hear about it, please go to this link to leave a 5-star review!! For Educational Purposes Only. The Creator owns the content.) "In The Unseen Realm, Dr. Michael Heiser examines the ancient context of Scripture, explaining how its supernatural worldview can help us grow in our understanding of God. He illuminates intriguing and amazing passages of the Bible that have been hiding in plain sight. You'll find yourself engaged in an enthusiastic pursuit of the truth, resulting in a new appreciation for God's Word. Why wasn't Eve surprised when the serpent spoke to her? How did descendants of the Nephilim survive the flood? Why did Jacob fuse Yahweh and his Angel together in his prayer? Who are the assembly of divine beings that God presides over? In what way do those beings participate in God's decisions? Why do Peter and Jude promote belief in imprisoned spirits? Why does Paul describe evil spirits in terms of geographical rulership? Who are the "glorious ones" that even angels dare not rebuke? After reading this book, you may never read your Bible the same way again. Endorsements "There is a world referred to in the Scripture that is quite unseen, but also quite present and active. Michael Heiser's The Unseen Realm seeks to unmask this world. Heiser shows how important it is to understand this world and appreciate how its contribution helps to make sense of Scripture. The book is clear and well done, treating many ideas and themes that often go unseen themselves. With this book, such themes will no longer be neglected, so read it and discover a new realm for reflection about what Scripture teaches." --Darrell L. Bock, Executive Director for Cultural Engagement, Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies, Howard G. Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership and Cultural Engagement "'How was it possible that I had never seen that before?' Dr. Heiser's survey of the complex reality of the supernatural world as the Scriptures portray it covers a subject that is strangely sidestepped. No one is going to agree with everything in his book, but the subject deserves careful study, and so does this book." --John Goldingay, David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament, School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary "This is a 'big' book in the best sense of the term. It is big in its scope and in its depth of analysis. Michael Heiser is a scholar who knows Scripture intimately in its ancient cultural context. All--scholars, clergy, and laypeople--who read this profound and accessible book will grow in their understanding of both the Old and New Testaments, particularly as their eyes are opened to the Bible's 'unseen world.'" --Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College "

Some important questions are given to him such as what are the major Biden's foreign policy towards China, how quick and how realistic is Biden's goal to put back the US global leadership? How does Prof. Markey see the future developments of the Quad and how much likely China will balance the Quad by another military or security alliance in the region? But China's foreign policy initiatives, even the vaunted "Belt and Road," will be shaped and redefined as they confront the ground realities of local and regional politics outside China. In China's Western Horizon, Daniel Markey anticipates that China's deepening involvement will play to the advantage of regional strongmen and exacerbate the political tensions within and among Eurasian states.

John reiterates that he baptizes with water but one stronger is coming who will baptize with the holy spirit. The holy spirit is a sign of a new era where Jews and Gentiles can be made clean and set apart as believers. If you like what you hear, visit our website at MasterLectures.ZondervanAcademic.com, where you can watch more of Darrell's lectures on Luke and Acts, along with thousands of other lectures on the Bible and theology. This podcast is a production of Narrativo

An intensifying technological arms race across air, sea, land, and space lies at the heart of the growing strategic contest between the United States and China. This rivalry straddles military and economic domains, and influencing it are the respective countries industrial policies, foreign direct investment, research and development programs, and threat assessments. It is taking place against a backdrop of a new age in global communication and the complexities of economic interdependence, as well as the blurring of military and civilian boundaries. What are the regional and global implications of technological defense competition between these two great powers? How can policymakers from both countries ensure its ends are peaceful? Thomas G. Mahnken is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. He is a Senior Research Professor at the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at The Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and has served for over 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including tours in Iraq and Kosovo. He currently serves as a member of the Congressionally-mandated National Defense Strategy Commission and as a member of the Board of Visitors of Marine Corps University. His previous government career includes service as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Planning from 2006–2009, where he helped craft the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review and 2008 National Defense Strategy. He served on the staff of the 2014 National Defense Panel, 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel, and the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction. He served in the Defense Department’s Office of Net Assessment and as a member of the Gulf War Air Power Survey. In 2009 he was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service and in 2016 the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Medal. Dr. Mahnken is the author of Strategy in Asia: The Past, Present and Future of Regional Security (Stanford University Press, 2014), Competitive Strategies for the 21st Century: Theory, History, and Practice (Stanford University Press, 2012), Technology and the American Way of War Since 1945 (Columbia University Press, 2008), and Uncovering Ways of War: U.S. Intelligence and Foreign Military Innovation, 1918–1941 (Cornell University Press, 2002), among other works. Tai Ming Cheung is an associate professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy and director of the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) at University of California, San Diego. He is a longtime analyst and leading expert on Chinese and East Asian defense and national security affairs, especially related to economic, industrial, technology and innovation issues. Researcher Dr. Eva Lee joins Tim to discuss her work on the front lines in the battle against the opioid epidemic. Dr. Lee is a professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech, and Director of the Center for Operations Research in Medicine and HealthCare, and her not-so-secret weapons are math, data and analytics. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Opioids_-_Start_by_protecting_the_innocents_-_Episode_27.mp3   In this episode, we talk with Dr. Lee about her work in trying to tackle challenging problems associated with the nation’s opioid epidemic and how perceptions in the medical community is one key area of focus. This bonus episode is a break from our normal pattern at the Shaping Opinion podcast. Usually, we talk about people, events or things that have found a place in history that truly have shaped the way we think. The nation’s opioid epidemic is different, however. The opioid epidemic is happening now. It’s not history. Our perceptions of the seeming harmlessness of a painkiller or a cough medicine may lead us to choose comfort over temporary discomfort, which has the potential to lead to complications from taking opioids. When we talked to Dr. Eva Lee, we learned that math can be used to identify patient care practices with the best outcomes, and that if those practices spread, society can start to take significant measures to counter the opioid epidemic. Dr. Lee focused her research on the youngest and most vulnerable among us, babies. But not healthy babies. These are babies born with heart defects that typically begin their lives in the Intensive Care Unit and face serious surgeries in the first year of their lives. They are prescribed opioids to alleviate their suffering. But where do we get to the point where the opioids can cause more problems than they solve? And most importantly, what can we learn from Dr. Lee’s research in this area to expand those lessons to children and adults so that the nation can form a more broad-based attack on the opioid epidemic? Dr. Lee is a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech, and she is Director of the Center for Operations Research in Medicine and HealthCare. She is also a Senior Research Professor at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. She uses mathematical programming and large-scale computational algorithms to help medical and healthcare decision-making. She tackles challenging problems in health systems and biomedicine by bringing a math perspective to healthcare, through systems modeling, algorithm and software design, and decision theory analysis. This work creates a better understanding of what works based on data and analytics so that patient care guidelines across the country can be improved. Dr. Lee was part of a team that was a finalist for a prestigious honor for this work. It is the Franz Edelman Award from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). We talked to Dr. Eva Lee about her research and what it means from actual health care practices, to doctor and patient perceptions.
