Dr. Jason Thacker, Director of the Research Institute at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a leading voice on human dignity, ethics, and culture, joins us to open Psalm 8 and help us recover a distinctly biblical vision of what it means to be human. In a cultural moment where personhood, value, and moral worth are often treated as fluid, developmental, or dependent on ability, autonomy, or usefulness, Dr. Thacker reminds us that Scripture grounds our dignity not in what we do, what others think of us, or what we contribute, but in the God who created us, knows us, and crowns humanity with glory and honor. Walking carefully through Psalm 8, he shows how our understanding of ourselves can never be separated from our understanding of God as Creator, Sustainer, and Lord, and how our calling as image bearers flows from His majesty rather than our own self-definition.Our dignity is secure because it is rooted not in ourselves, but in the majesty of the God who made us.

Today on the podcast, I'm pleased to welcome Dr. Clint Pressley. Dr. Pressley has been serving as the President of the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, since his election in June 2024 — and he was reelected to a second term in June 2025. That means, of course, that he is coming to the end of his tenure as president, and I wanted to sit down with him to reflect on his time as president, and to look at some of the issues facing the SBC and evangelicalism in general. Before stepping into this national leadership role, Clint Pressley has spent decades in pastoral ministry, most notably as the senior pastor of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he has faithfully shepherded his congregation since 2011. His journey in ministry began in his youth and has taken him across multiple states and church contexts — from Mississippi to Alabama and back to North Carolina — shaping a pastoral heart deeply grounded in Scripture and committed to gospel proclamation. A graduate of Wofford College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Pressley has also served in key denominational capacities for years, including as vice president of the SBC and as a trustee and former chairman of the board for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Beyond his leadership roles, he is known for emphasizing unity, doctrinal fidelity, and mission focus within the convention. Today, he joins us to reflect on his vision for Southern Baptists, the challenges and opportunities facing the church, and what it means to lead with conviction rooted in faith. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.
According to some of the most influential thinkers of the modern era, it is madness to subordinate all one's aims to one end. Such thinkers believe that the church in particular should limit itself to matters of religion, spirituality, and moral values, but in other areas of life submit itself to modern society. Madness, Theocracy, and Anarchism contends instead that the church should refuse to mind its assigned place or restrict its attention to a delimited sphere of activity. The mission, calling, and purpose of the church cannot rightly be thought of or treated as a function of any other social grouping, be it family, region, state, culture, race, or class. Its mission is to cultivate a new and distinct society to act both amidst the old and as a contrast to it, displaying the form of social life intended for all humankind in Christ. The church is thus called to a different understanding of politics having to do with the practices that order the common life and relations of a people, forming the members of this community to live according to this order and to embody these relations for the whole world.Barry Harvey examines those points where the church's practice of politics directly challenges the many ways Christians have put national and tribal loyalties ahead of our inclusion in the pilgrim people of God, and those places where the social activities, structures, and imaginative tales animating the Western world in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries challenge the faithfulness of the Christian community. The analysis of the dominant social order is not to understand it for its own sake, but to spell out the context of the church's worship, collective life, and testimony.Dr. Barry Harvey has been a professor of theology with Baylor's Department of Religion and the Honors College since 2007 and has been working at Baylor since 1988. He has an MDiv from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and a PHD from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He has written multiple books and articles including Taking Hold of the Real: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Profound Worldliness of Christianity. He is an ordained Baptist minister and a native of Denver, Colorado.

In this conversation, Caleb is joined by Michael Carlino (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) to discuss the relationship between revelational epistemology and Christian Platonism, emphasizing the importance of philosophy serving theology rather than the reverse. Carlino critiques the use of pagan metaphysics in Christian thought, particularly the risks associated with blurring the creator-creature distinction and the implications for understanding sin and salvation. The discussion highlights the necessity of keeping the gospel central in theological discourse and offers practical insights for integrating philosophy within a biblical framework.Resources: Know Scripture, No Need for Platonism: Revelational Epistemology Has Priority Over Remnantal Sophistry by Michael CarlinoHere's a link to a series of helpful essays at Christ Over All on various topics concerning Christian Platonism: Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts: Plundering Plato without Becoming a Platonist

Biblical Counseling Africa: Equipping the Church for Gospel-Centered Care in South Africa and BeyondRecorded on the road at the Biblical Counseling Coalition Global Summit, this Speak the Truth podcast episode features interviews with Kyle Johnston and Jane Kratz from Cape Town, South Africa, about their ministry contexts and the growth of Biblical Counseling Africa. Jane shares how her husband's death in 2012 led her to pursue a theologically rich approach to grief and loss, moving from prior psychology studies to biblical counseling training through ABC's Equipped to Counsel material and later studying at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, with additional church experience in Texas before returning to South Africa. Kyle, an ordained minister at Gracefield Church in Fish Hoek, explains how pastoral ministry exposed a gap between confident pulpit preaching and applying Scripture in complex, conversational counseling situations; this led him to training through Wayne Mack's curriculum in South Africa and a master's degree at The Master's University in Los Angeles (2012), while continuing to prioritize pastoral care and counseling in church life. They discuss why they remain committed to serving in Africa despite opportunities elsewhere, noting both the significant needs in Cape Town and South Africa and the mission field created by migration from other African nations. They describe cultural observations, including hospitality and the value of contextual ministry shaped by South Africa's historical experience, including navigating multicultural ministry after apartheid.Kyle outlines how Biblical Counseling Africa began in part to make CCEF training more accessible and affordable in their context and to expand beyond South Africa through online courses. The organization's aim is to equip local churches across Africa to provide wise, loving, gospel-centered pastoral care that restores Christ to counseling. They describe a three-level approach: (1) grassroots seminars, talks, and workshops (including using ABC conference resources with local case studies and courses such as Jane's nine-week grief care course); (2) training such as ABC's Equipped to Counsel offered during COVID and in-person; and (3) advanced CCEF courses, with growing enrollment. Future focus includes helping pastors develop a church-wide culture of care, vulnerability, and mutual ministry beyond sermon-centered expectations. They explain that Biblical Counseling Africa is a nonprofit and invite listeners to support the work through prayer, financial giving, and volunteering. They emphasize the need for resources to sustain operations, relieve volunteer load, and provide scholarships for students from poorer African contexts. They express gratitude for support from American partners including CCEF, ABC, BCC, and others, noting that courses are offered at about a quarter of the normal cost, and direct listeners to biblicalcounsellingafrica.com for more information and contact.00:00 Welcome to Speak the Truth (Podcast Intro)01:09 Meet Jane: From Grief & Loss to Biblical Counseling02:30 Texas Culture Shock & Accent Stories03:39 Meet Kyle: Pastoral Ministry Path into Counseling06:12 Why Stay & Serve in Africa?
