Howland Center fundraises for portico, and beyond, to honor Northcutt Shortly after moving to Beacon in 2007, Thomas de Villiers, the vice president of the Howland Cultural Center's board of directors, recalls meeting Florence Northcutt, the center's longtime champion, who died last month at 97. De Villiers was sitting on a bench, reading a book, near his Main Street apartment when Northcutt, then 80 and president of the Howland board, parked nearby. "She had her dog, Major, who she took everywhere," de Villiers said. "She invited me to come inside. I said, 'I will, a little later.' " A couple of hours later, after an appointment, de Villiers walked into the ornate brick building at 477 Main St., which in 1973 became the first structure in Beacon to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There, he found Northcutt on a step ladder, patching the walls of the performance room. "She said, 'I need some help,' and I became a volunteer," de Villiers said. "She did that with just about everybody." That room was renamed Northcutt Hall in 2022. For the past year, de Villiers and the other officers - secretary Craig Wolf, treasurer Hannah Brooks and president Theresa Kraft - have overseen a campaign to raise $150,000 to restore the Howland's deteriorated portico and central facade (the front doors and everything above them). The 152-year-old building's need for repairs is never-ending, but the portico project dates to 2020, when the board discussed painting the wooden support columns. As they looked closer, they discovered rot. In other spots, aging brick needed repair, and the foundation was no longer sufficient to support the portico. So they launched Pennies for a Portico, named after a penny drive undertaken 26 years earlier by Beacon school children to help rebuild the slate roof. That effort, engineered by Northcutt, raised nearly $10,000. Students from Glenham Elementary raised $3,000 on their own. This time around, as hoped, coffee cans filled with bills and coins began to appear on the center's stoop. Board members found envelopes with cash left anonymously with the mail. Someone even left a 2-gallon orange Home Depot bucket filled with coins. Big checks came in, too. On May 20, the Beacon City Council agreed to renew a $50,000 community facilities grant that was awarded to the center in 2021 for facade improvements but had been deferred while it secured additional funding. The Howland also recently received $50,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts for the project. After accounting for revenue from a gala held last month at the Roundhouse, the board met its goal. The fundraising, however, continues, to cover the cost of materials and construction driven higher by inflation and "for the unseen that we'll uncover" when the project begins, Kraft said. The organization is working with architect Jeff Wilkinson and contractor Tom Clemmens, who specialize in historic preservation. Reconstruction is expected to begin this year and will include reinstalling scrollwork that fell from the roof's gables decades ago "and hasn't ever been seen by anyone alive," Wolf said. Board members said that seeing the project through to completion, and continuing to save for future rehab work, is a fitting way to honor Northcutt, who spent 38 years - including 21 as board president - promoting art, music, theater and all things cultural at the center. The building was acquired in 1978, two years after its first and only other occupant, the Howland Circulating Library, moved to 313 Main St. and became the Howland Public Library. A year after the acquisition, programming began under the Howland Cultural Center banner. The change in ownership happened "at a poor time in a poor town," Wolf said, but when Northcutt moved to Beacon in 1984, while still working as a speech therapist in Westchester County, she labored tirelessly to integrate the new center into the community. On this episode, we are joined by James Northcutt, an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, to discuss brachial plexus birth injuries. James is the coordinator of the brachial plexus program at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. We discuss several aspects of this diagnosis from evaluation at birth or soon after, how to address the needs of these children, and some of the interventions these kids might receive to address their impairments. He also gives us some great therapy treatment ideas and how to help these children from infancy to adulthood.   Guest Bio: My career began in adult hand at Bay Area Rehabilitation Center in Baytown and after two years I applied for a position at Shriners Hospital despite not having the credentials they were seeking. Shriners took a chance on me, and I fell in love with caring for tiny humans. Five years in to practice I was given the opportunity to serve as the brachial plexus clinic coordinator and hand therapist at Texas Children's Hospital, a role I've been in for five years.  I am an adjunct professor for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Texas Woman's University lecturing on brachial plexus birth palsy, anatomy of the upper extremity and helping out in the cadaver lab. Special interests include innovation in care through a collaboration with the Engineering Program at Rice University and custom orthosis design for pediatric patients.   I enjoy woodworking and building lamps out of antique appliances when time allows, and my weekends are filled with family activities. I am honored to be considered for the ASHT podcast and hope to give back to the profession that has given me so much joy. I am married to my beautiful and brilliant wife Leah, who is the greater of two therapists in our home. We have two crazy boys Isaac (3) and Evan (1) who keep us on our toes and are responsible for most of my gray hair.

My guest today is Corey Northcutt, the founder of the Northcutt agency. The company is highly successful and Corey has built an impressive SEO and Cloud service. However, it wasn't always that way. Before Northcutt, Corey was a co-founder of Ubiquiti, a web hosting company. That company grew wildly, but it became a nightmare once the four business partners involved began seeing dollar signs. Corey tells me about his time in a highly political and stressful business. His story is a cautionary tale about how to structure your company in the beginning to maintain a fair balance of power. Corey left his company in a massive blow-up that left him aimless and shell-shocked. He tells me how he found his direction and how he's done things differently this time around with Northcutt. You will learn about: The beginnings of Ubiquiti. How Corey pivoted into other services. Why Corey chose his first business partner. When Ubiquiti merged with one of its clients and two more partners joined the team. The benefits of catering to a niche market. The initial partnership structure Corey and his partners used. Why does Corey choose not to work from an office? Corey's advice to the audience. Office politics is a little more serious than we give it credit for. On today's show, we talk through a ‘hostile work environment' that's hard to make a joke out of. Corey Northcutt experienced first-hand what it's like to have your baby ripped away from you—and there was nothing he could do about it. Founder, Smounder As Corey found out, it didn't matter one little bit that he was the originator for Ubiquity, his web hosting company. Yes, he owned the domain name and he had done a lot of the back-end work to get their servers up and running, but in the end, that wasn't enough to get him anything better than a buyout. Unless you have the right operating agreements or other paperwork in place that cements roles, expectations, salaries, etc., you lose a lot of your authority (and in this case importance) to a company when you bring on partners. And most of us need partners! Someone has to fund the expansion or figure out how to distribute on a wider scale. One of Four And here's the other fun factor. Once you bring on your partners, you become a voice among many. While there are a lot of ways this can work for you, there are also a lot of ways it works against you. The biggest detractor to multiple partners (especially without a tie-breaker) is decision making. Your voice, which used to be 100% of the decision making process is now only 25%, for example. So unless at least two of your other partners agree with you, you'll never have final say on something. This bleeds into the exit process as well. If everyone is after something a little different, it's hard to align operational goals, let alone exit ones. Someone wants the most about of cash possible, someone wants to stay on as a developer, someone wants to sit on the board with stock options and earnouts. That's
