04 Numbers 14-15; 20 Proverbs 6; 43 John 8
Drawing on the story of Joshua and Caleb, Roger illustrates how their destiny was determined by their choice to believe and speak what God had declared, unlike the ten spies who were framed by unbelief and fear. He emphasises the crucial role of "hearing" God's word, which means allowing it to settle deeply into one's heart and inner being. Passage: Numbers 14:1–9 1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” Song: Courage by Brandon Lake, Jacob Sooter, Lee Worley, and Tyler Roberts Lyrics: To face a life-long idol and burn it To open up my heart and let You search it To fall down on my knees in earnest God give us courage God give us courage To love the ones who openly condemn us To shine a light into the deepest darkness To leave behind my mask and truly worship God give us courage God give us courage Singing bolder bolder We come into Your presence singing Closer closer Let Heaven fill the earth with holy Fire fire Don't stop until our hearts are burning Bolder bolder now Holy courage breaking out To crucify my will in holy service To never bow even if it means the furnace To pledge my every breath ‘cause You deserve it God give us courage God give us courage Let the trembling heart be brave Let His ransomed people pray Watch the strongholds start to break At just the mention of His name Let the captives leave their chains Let the voiceless start to praise Watch the miracles take shape At just the mention of His name Singing bolder bolder We come into Your presence singing Closer closer Let heaven fill the earth with holy Fire fire Don't stop until our hearts are burning Bolder bolder We come into Your presence singing Closer closer Let heaven fill the earth with holy Fire fire Don't stop until our hearts are burning Bolder bolder now Holy courage breaking out Prayer: Write your blessed name, O Lord, upon my heart, there to remain so indelibly engraved, that no prosperity, no adversity shall ever move me from your love. Be to me a strong tower of defense, a comforter in tribulation, a deliverer in distress, a very present help in trouble, and a guide to heaven through the many temptations and dangers of this life. Amen. —Thomas à Kempis

This week on Walk Talks, we journey through a pivotal stretch of Israel's wilderness wanderings. From the spies' fearful report and the people's rebellion in Numbers 13–14 to God's judgment and mercy, we see how unbelief can cloud vision and how intercession can move the heart of God. Then, in chapters 15–17, we witness both the consequences of disobedience and God's reaffirmation of His chosen leaders. Through Korah's rebellion and Aaron's budding staff, the Lord makes clear who He has appointed and what it means to trust and follow Him fully. Join us as we unpack these sobering yet hope-filled chapters and ask the question: Will we walk by fear or by faith?
Luke chapter 23 commences with Jesus before the Roman Governor Pilate, who wants nothing to do with the trumped up charges levelled against our Lord. Pilate pronounces Jesus innocent and hearing he was from Galilee felt he could evade any responsibility by sending him to Herod. Herod had been curious about Jesus for some time. Upon questioning him, without an answer from Jesus, Pilate reverts to allowing his soldiers to mock and brutalise our Lord. Having found no fault in our Lord Jesus, Herod returns him to Pilate – a partial reconciliation occurs between the two potentates. Pilate once again declares Jesus innocent, but allows him to be brutally scourged (scourging was sometimes called the intermediate death – and many a man died under the barbaric scourge). Even this failed to evoke any pity. For the third time Jesus was pronounced innocent. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to bay for Jesus blood. and badgered Pilate into a decision that he did not want to make. Our Lord was delivered to be crucified and Barbaras was released. Jesus was so weak that the Romans pressed Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross. This man and his two sons became disciples. The women on the road to Calvary wept as they beheld our Lord, but Jesus told them to weep not for him, but for the miseries that would fall on them. Jesus was crucified between two thieves, who could have been Barabbas' followers. The place of his crucifixion was that of a skull; again in all probability that of Goliath's skull. The soldiers gambled for his clothes, as had been prophesied. Jesus, himself implored his Father to forgive them as they knew not what they were doing. One of the two thieves crucified with our Lord railed upon Jesus The other thief turned in repentance to Jesus and asked for Jesus to remember him when Jesus would come in his kingdom. Very likely the second thief understood the Gospel of the Kingdom. He was given the assurance of a place in that Kingdom. Jesus' words were that the thief would be with the Lord in that day. Neither were in paradise that day for Jesus spent the next three days in the tomb. Our Lord suffered the taunting of sinners, by masterfully controlling himself and as such our Lord was the Victor. Jesus died calmly at about 3pm and seeing that demeanour a hardened centurion exclaimed that surely this man was the Son of God. For six hours the Almighty veiled the scene with darkness, as a sign of His indignation at their doings. When Jesus died there was a great earthquake and the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom – showing God's displeasure. The law was now finished and Christ had opened of a new and living way. Two counsellors – Joseph and Nicodemas – from the Sanhedrin secured the body of Jesus from Pilate and took it to Joseph's unused garden tomb. The women, who followed our Lord and had just witnessed his crucifixion, now followed Joseph and Nicodemas to see where Jesus' body was laid and where they would later need to come with the spices they would purchase for his burial. The women then rested on the Sabbath day.

On our last episode, God sent spies into the land of Canaan, the land He promised to give them, but when they saw their foes, they brought back a negative report, and refused to venture onward. Today, God resolves to wipe them out for their rebellion, but Moses intercedes for the people, pleading with God to act with faithful and steadfast love. Instead, God resolves to keep their generation out of the land, promising that their children would inherit it instead. Later, a man named Korah incites a rebellion against Moses, questioning his authority. Armed with the conclusion that the entire community of Israel is holy, he contends that Moses and Aaron have no right to go before the Lord exclusively. Korah and 250 men appear before the Lord, and what happens next is unprecedented.Numbers 14 - 1:14 . Numbers 15 - 9:30 . Numbers 16 - 16:26 . Numbers 14: A Story of Faith, Rebellion, and Judgment Numbers 14 is a pivotal chapter in the history of Israel's journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It highlights themes of faith, fear, rebellion, and God's judgment. This chapter records a critical moment when the Israelites, standing at the edge of Canaan, chose fear over faith, leading to severe consequences. Key Events and Historical Facts 1.The People's Fear and Rebellion (Numbers 14:1-4) After the twelve spies returned from scouting Canaan, ten of them reported that the land was filled with powerful enemies, including the Nephilim (giants). Fear spread among the people, and they cried out in despair, wishing they had died in Egypt or the wilderness rather than face the inhabitants of Canaan. The Israelites proposed choosing a new leader to take them back to Egypt, rejecting Moses, Aaron, and ultimately, God's plan. 2.The Faith of Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:5-10) Joshua and Caleb, the only two spies who trusted God, urged the people to have faith. They reminded Israel that if God delighted in them, He would bring them into the land. Instead of listening, the people threatened to stone them. 3.God's Anger and Moses' Intercession (Numbers 14:11-19) God declared His intent to destroy the Israelites and start a new nation through Moses. Moses pleaded with God, reminding Him of His mercy and faithfulness. God relented but imposed a severe punishment. 4.God's Judgment: 40 Years of Wandering (Numbers 14:20-38) Because of their rebellion, the Israelites would wander for 40 years—one year for each day the spies explored Canaan. Every man 20 years and older who rejected God's promise would die in the wilderness, except Joshua and Caleb. The ten unfaithful spies were struck down by a plague. 5.The Presumptuous Attempt to Enter Canaan (Numbers 14:39-45) After hearing God's judgment, some Israelites tried to invade Canaan without God's approval. The Amalekites and Canaanites attacked them and drove them back, confirming that God's presence was no longer with them. Key Words & Themes in Numbers 14 1.Promised Land – The land of Canaan, given by God. 2.Fear & Rebellion – The people rejected God's promise due to fear. 3.Moses & Aaron – Leaders who interceded for Israel. 4.Joshua & Caleb – The only spies who remained faithful. 5.Faith vs. Doubt – A central theme as Israel struggled to trust God. 6.God's Judgment – A 40-year punishment for unbelief. 7.Plague – A direct consequence for the ten spies who led Israel into fear. 8.Wilderness – The place where Israel would wander until a new generation arose. 9.Disobedience – The failed attempt to enter Canaan despite God's warning. 10.Intercession – Moses pleaded for mercy, and God spared the people from immediate destruction.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

The bad report of the ten unfaithful spies leads Israel into utter rebellion against the LORD, as they look for someone to lead them back to Egypt. When Joshua and Caleb remind the people that they do not need to be afraid because the LORD is with them, the people of Israel are ready to stone them along with Moses and Aaron until the LORD intervenes. Moses intercedes before the LORD so that the LORD does not immediately bring an end to Israel right then and there. Still, the LORD tells Israel they can have what they have asked. Those twenty years old and upward counted in the census will die during a forty-year wandering in the wilderness, while their children will enter the Promised Land after that time. A false repentance on the part of Israel leads them to disobey yet again by trying to take the Promised Land without the LORD. They are defeated and begin their wandering in the wilderness. Rev. Steve Andrews, pastor at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lee's Summit, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Numbers 14:1-45. "Wilderness Wanderings” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Numbers. After the LORD delivers His people from slavery in Egypt, He leads them toward the Promised Land. Although the first generation of Israelites proves faithless, the LORD remains faithful to His people and brings a new generation of Israelites to the plains of Moab. This strengthens us to listen to God's promises today and stay faithful to Him as He guides us toward resurrection life.
