Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we explore movies from established stars that flopped at the box office, have been forgotten by time, or remain hidden gems. We're talking Warren Beatty. Conor O'Donnell and myself bring on movie nerd & good friend Adam Drosin to discuss McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Fortune, Dick Tracy and Rules Don't Apply. Yes, we cheated with a couple of A-Sides in there, but not to worry, we talk about a whole lot more.

Star Trek has had a huge impact on pop culture throughout its 50 years. Many episodes have become a gold standard of television making, tackling issues of human interest and societal taboos. It has dealt with subjects such as love, death, sexuality, racism, racial and gender equality, and many more. Some episodes have even made lists of "Best episodes of television ever". And then there are episodes that fall short of the high bar that Star Trek is known for. Some episodes miss the bar by a small amount, and others don't even come close to getting off the ground. One episode that sometimes shows up on worst of Trek lists is "Catspaw," the first episode produced for season two of the original Star Trek. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Adam Drosin, co-host of Saturday Morning Trek, to discuss the episode "Catspaw" and its music composed by Gerald Fried. Adam is one who champions and supports "Catspaw" with love, as a personal favorite episode, not deserving of its not-so-stellar reputation. So turn on a bright light and lock the doors as we dive into the spooky side of Trek. Once Upon a Planet. The Enterprise crew revisits the fondly remembered "amusement park" planet, hoping for some rest and relaxation—which of course turns into kidnapping and the near destruction of the ship. Filmation has always had a bad reputation for sloppy animation and stilted storytelling. Unfortunately, we my have found one of the episodes where this is somewhat deserved. In this episode of Saturday Morning Trek, hosts Aaron Harvey and Adam Drosin talk the pros and cons of this animated sequel to "Shore Leave," and take you on a Journey from Star Trek to Isis (no, not that one) to Baywatch Nights. Yes, Baywatch Nights! Kirk gets to talk down a computer, Uhura sings, and Sulu is in two places at once. Grab your two-headed dragon and join the fun! STLV and Optional Canon. Running Time: 44 minutes 4 seconds Over the past fifty years, Star Trek has developed a dense mythology. But at the same time, it has always tried to produce episodes and movies which stand on their own. In this episode of Stage Nine, John is joined by Lee Hutchison of The Nerd Party to discuss the concept of optional canon. We discuss whether or not some installments are designed to both with and without the previous one, and how that applies in particular to Star Trek Beyond. In news, Mike is joined by Adam Drosin of Saturday Morning Trek to recap the events of the 50th anniversary convention in Las Vegas. We discuss panels featuring Brannon Braga, Ronald D. Moore and Naren Shankar, and Mike shares his experience at the Ira Steven Behr photo op. Saturday Morning Trek: A Podcast About Star Trek in the 1970s
The Magicks of Megas-Tu. The Enterprise takes a jaunt to the center of the galaxy to see what might still be happening at the point of the Big Bang. Soon after, the crew apparently parts ways with science. They find an energy–matter whirlwind and a fireworks display that rivals those of the US Bicentennial celebrations. Spock draws a pentagram on the floor, Sulu conjures up a woman, Kirk shoots magic lightning beams out of his hands, and a guy that's not Q puts humanity on trial. Oh, and did we mention Lucifer is there? In this episode of Saturday Morning Trek—the first to feature new co-host Adam Drosin—we dive into "The Magicks of Megas-Tu," one of the strangest, most transgressive bits of Star Trek ever committed to film. We discuss everything from Jacques Tati's gloriously choreographed, nearly wordless movie about confusion in the age of technology to English occultist author and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley, as well as TV broadcast standards and the obsession with red, white and blue in the 1970s. So grab a stein of ale and settle into the wood-paneled den. It’s going to be a trip! Anton Yelchin. Running Time: 38 minutes On July 19th, 2016, we lost the youngest member of the Star Trek family, Anton Yelchin. Yelchin portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, as well as Justin Lin's upcoming picture, Star Trek Beyond. Outside of Star Trek, Yelchin's extensive resume included over 50 performances in film and television. In this episode of Stage Nine, John and Mike are joined by Adam Drosin to remember Yelchin. We discuss his portrayal of a young Chekov, and his work outside of Trek, including Terminator Salvation, Alpha Dog, and Green Room. We also give our picks for favorite Yelchin performances.
