We are not as smart as we think we are.  We're busy and distracted in a world that is incentivized to continually make us more of both. The only things that work, the only messages that cut through the noise, are sharp, clear, and direct. We've all been advised to “not judge a book by its cover,” to “not count your chickens before they hatch,” and that “Rome wasn't built in a day.” Maybe for you, what comes to mind is something political, like Patrick Henry's revolutionary “Give me liberty, or give me death!” or more recently, Barack Obama's “Yes We Can.” Now think for a second about the other few thousand messages you heard in the past 24 hours –things told to you, like ads, warnings, instructions, or even things you've sought out, like articles, social media posts, or stories.  How many of them do you actually remember? How many of the things that you've said, do other people remember? Do they actually even hear what you're saying? The answer is simple. Literally. Simple. Regardless if these messages are trying to get your dollars, your votes, or just your thoughts, the most effective messages all share one thing. They-are-simple. Ben Guttmann is interested in the things and ideas that move people - why we make the decisions we make; why we vote for who we vote for; why we buy the products we buy, and ultimately, why we do what we do. We did a deep dive into his new book, Simply Put: Why Clear Messages Win-and How to Design Them. It emphasizes the importance of clear communication, and we discussed why he believes clarity is such a critical skill, both personally and professionally. Simply Put offers strategies for simplifying complex ideas and messages. Ben stepped me through the key principles and techniques listeners can use to streamline their communication effectively. While in prison he studied himself, people, and God. In 2016, he organized the Yes We Can! Worship Center. His mission is to serve, and feeds catered meals to the homeless every Friday night at 7 pm.   As an actively serving board member for the Special Olympics Colorado and Commission Chair for the Independent Ethics Commission, Liz Krupa has a lot on her plate. Most people are quite a bit more complicated than what you can get in a job title, a few bullet points or something like that, even more complicated than what you'd see in a resume. Oftentimes, people take on a lot of different types of pursuits but these pursuits are part of the same whole personal brand. Something that I've been hearing about quite a bit more is that we all have a personal brand that connects a lot of the things we do. My guest, Liz Krupa, encapsulates this idea of having a personal brand that manifests in a number of different pursuits pretty much better than almost anyone else that I've encountered so far. Liz, I would like to welcome you to the program and quickly talk to you about all the pursuits that you are involved in toward the same goal of protecting the people, the unprotected, as well as the ethics in the legal profession. Tell us about all these different endeavors because you're in the trial advocacy, the Ethics Commission, Special Olympics. They're all different places that you've got yourself involved with. Any time I have felt pushed down or doors shut or told no or 'that's cute little girl maybe you should try to do this instead', it has just made me more determined to get through that door, more determined to succeed. Click To Tweet By training and education, I'm a lawyer. I do mostly criminal defense but I also do some ethics and internal investigation type of work, white-collar work. I serve on several boards and commissions. Two of the boards that I serve are NITA, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, which is a nationwide advocacy group that tries to help lawyers be better advocates and the Colorado Special Olympics, which is part of the larger National and International Special Olympics, which works with getting developmentally disabled people more recognition through sports and school, giving them the correct access to medical care and the importance of keeping your physical health up as well. Those are two of the nonprofit boards that I serve. I am also the Chair of the Commission on Judicial Discipline for the State of Colorado, which is the only entity that looks at any rules of conduct for judges, whether those were violated, makes recommendations to the Supreme Court as far as discipline. I'm also the chair of the Independent Ethics Commission, which similarly looks at any violation of the rules of ethics for elected officials. Numerous of those types of endeavors. I also mentor through law school. Yes We Can, which is a mentoring program that tries to bring interested young people of color through college into the LSAT program through law school and help them pass the bar. We stay with them through their first several years and hope they stay and mentor...

It is the second time a Peanuts animated special was referenced in a title- the first being “A Huey Freeman Christmas” (A Charlie Brown Christmas) When Granddad is exchanging the picture of Huey and Riley with one of Obama, a picture of the cast of The Warriors can be seen as well as a picture of economist Thomas Sowell. Tom and Sarah are shown wearing Obama Girl and Boy t-shirts. Sarah's shirt is in reference to the viral video and internet star Obama Girl. In the beginning where Huey is one of Obama's top friends on Myspace is a reference to when the rapper Jin became one of Obama's top Myspace friends after his song “Open Letter To Obama”. Early in the episode, John McCain states that Huey is a boy that thinks “Jesus is black, Ronald Reagan is the devil, and the government is lying about 9/11.” This is a reference to “The Garden Party“, where Huey speaks those exact words to party guests in his dream. They were also the first words Huey spoke in the series. This is the second time in the series Huey has had to abort an ‘operation' “because he couldn't get a ride”. The first was in “The Passion of Reverend Ruckus“. Uncle Ruckus has more precise aim with his brick throwing unlike Season 1 (“Return of the King”). Ironically, he decides not to throw a brick at Obama at the Inauguration because “his throwing arm isn't what it used to be”. She graduated from MIT in 2016, where she studied Biological Engineering and started rowing. Currently, she is an MD student at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a part of the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford, where she researches Pulmonary Valve Replacement Outcomes in children with Tetralogy of Fallot. She hopes to become a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon and help to serve this patient population on the island. She began competing as the Woman Single sculler for Puerto Rico in 2014. She is named Rowing athlete of the year for Puerto Rico in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. In 2019, I made it to the A Final at the Pan-American Games. She has trained in the boathouse featured in The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
