This week, we're breaking our hiatus to break from our format, as we are not breaking down a film this week so much as hyping one up, as we get ready for the movie event of the summer by over-analyzing the final trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you're a long-time listener or even someone who's only heard a few episodes you probably know that the Mission: Impossible movies are a permanent hyper-fixation around here, so we had to get together to discuss a preview loaded wall-to-wall with That Guy character actors, including the return of our beloved boy Shea Whigham, and even that one guy from the first movie who had to go have diarrhea. Everyone is here! Plus: J Mo's got a theatrical field report having been out to the VIFF premiere of the pro wrestling biopic Queen of the Ring that included a live Q&A with the film's director and star, and as usual we catch up on what's been filling our Letterboxd. Other works discussed on this episode include Kimi, Rushmore, The Accountant, The Pitt, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aquaman, Campfire Tales, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Twister: Caught in the Storm, Twisters, Tenet, Deja Vu, The Iron Claw, Flow, The Wild Robot, Rope, Stranger Than Fiction and Terminator: Salvation. Not sure when we'll back together again, but we can say when we do we will be discussing Warren Beatty's 1990 comic book detective noir Dick Tracy, a movie that is literally never available to stream and may never be despite being produced and distributed by Disney. We've also got while-they're-in-theatres episodes planned over the next month for both The Accountant 2 and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, so look forward to those, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

¡Únete a nuestra resistencia! Russell Binder, the IP accelerator behind Five Nights at Freddy's, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, reveals how gaming communities are reshaping Hollywood's and gamings approach to franchise building. In this conversation, Russell Binder, founder of Stryker Entertainment, shares his journey from representing comic book creators to building billion-dollar transmedia franchises. With 30+ years of experience developing IPs like Five Nights at Freddy's, Twilight Saga, and Angry Birds, Russell provides unprecedented insights into how gaming communities are transforming Hollywood and gaming's approach to storytelling, merchandising and entertainment."When I started in the business, there were the five families, Warner's, Disney, Universal, Sony, and Paramount, and they were generally the gatekeepers of the big IPs," Russell explains. He reveals the strategies behind turning Five Nights at Freddy's from an indie game to a global phenomenon through community cultivation: "The virality of these jump scares and watching people play this game introduced this property to a massive social audience across YouTube, across Instagram... you didn't have to play the game to get excited about Five Nights at Freddy's."Russell also shares candid stories about working with industry legends: "If you ask me what I love about my job, as much as I love movies, as much as I love video games, the people I've had the pleasure to work with, Steven Spielberg, Sean Levy, Guillermo del Toro, like some of the coolest storytellers and filmmakers..." His insights on what makes an IP truly transferable are invaluable: "If you look at what works in horror, it's iconic. It's Freddie, Jason, Michael Myers in the film business. In gaming, Five Nights at Freddy's and Poppy and Bendy... Iconic characters that translate multi-directionally."Timestamps:00:00 Introduction to Russell Binder and Striker Entertainment05:32 The Twilight Saga 18:17 Transitioning to Video Games: Angry Birds and Five Nights at Freddy's25:43 Future of Transmedia and Cross-Platform Content34:27 The Challenges of Transmedia Projects34:54 Disney's Transmedia Mastery35:17 Amazon's Potential in Transmedia36:47 The Evolution of Gaming and Hollywood37:29 Criteria for Successful Transmedia Ventures40:15 High on Life: A Transmedia Success Story41:36 The Future of Transmedia Adaptations51:09: Working with Steven Spielberg 59:42 The Future of Transmedia and EntertainmentGuest Biography:Russell Binder is the founder of Stryker Entertainment, an IP accelerator specialising in transmedia development, licensing, and production. My guest today has done it all. He's gone from cinematography on small-budget indie films to $200 million-plus projects which is literally goals for many in this line of business. Director and cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut's thirty-plus experience and success as a storyteller is categorically innovative to the craft and inspiring for other filmmakers.Shane's latest film Love Hard is set for digital release via Netflix this November. This romantic comedy is about a young woman in Los Angeles who falls for a man on a dating app and travels to his East Coast hometown to surprise him for Christmas but discovers that she's been catfished. Her crush actually does live in the same town, and the guy who duped her offers to set them up if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. He's an esteemed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Cinematographers. The ASC recognized Shane's work very early on in his carrier from his film The Rat Pack and he was one of their youngest cinematographer nominees. Shane Co-founded the Hurlbut Academy alongside his wife and business partner, Lydia Hurlbut. Their platform offers professional online filmmaking education and mentoring materials, curated by other filmmakers. This interactive library has collaborated with filmmakers to develop about 50 Courses, 400+ Lessons, and 700+ hours of instruction videos. Some of the top projects he's worked on include Drumline, We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, Act Of Valor, and Game Of Thrones. The highly acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones was hailed for its spectacular cinematography. Outstanding, if you will. In 2012, Shane served as director of photography for their Game of Thrones: You Win or You Die - Inside the HBO Series that was an interview for major cast and crew members. Wherein, characters, families, kingdoms, and plots were explained with an in-depth look at season one. And what viewers could expect from season two. Some of Shane's work includes NetFlix's Rim of The World, Holidate, There Is No Place Like Home, Fathers, and Daughters, the pilot episode for SyFy's Resident Alien, and Disney+ original film Safety.Safety was inspired by the true story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, the film follows a freshman football player for Clemson University who secretly raised his younger brother on campus after his home life became too unsteady. His passion for filmmaking goes back to his childhood. Like the cool kid he still is, Shane did morning announcements at our high school and DJ for a local radio station. As you can imagine, he started doing dances, proms, and homecoming across the local upstate New York area. He earned part of his education at a small community college where he fell in love with radio, TV production, and so forth. A scholarship to study film at Emerson College in Boston sealed the deal for Shane. In 2002, Shane's box office hit film, Drumline became a major splash. Nick Cannon stars as a young drummer who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school's drum section. A fish-out-of-water comedy about a talented street drummer from Harlem who enrolls in a Southern university, expecting to lead its marching band's drumline to victory. He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top. Lots of knowledge bombs from Shane in this conversation, You don't want to miss out. Enjoy my chat with Shane Hurlbut.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

This episode of Does it Fly? is presented by Netflix, the exclusive home of Terminator Zero, starring Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd. Terminator Zero is now streaming only on Netflix.“Come with me if you want to learn.”OK, fine, that's not what anyone says pretty much anywhere in the Terminator franchise. But haven't you ever wondered just how some of the time travel concepts that set up one of the most successful and beloved sci-fi movie and TV franchises of all time work? This episode is really only dealing with the “grandfather paradox” as it relates to The Terminator (1984), James Cameron's original sci-fi horror masterpiece that pretty much strapped a stardom rocket to Arnold Schwarzenegger's back and helped redefine the boundaries of sci-fi and action storytelling on screen. It also kicked off one of the most sprawling and beloved science fiction franchises of a generation. Check it out here or on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING While we're pretty much only focused on that first film for this episode, if you want to expand your Terminator knowledge, it can feel like a lot. When in doubt when you're navigating a big franchise that occupies different places on its own timeline, we always advise you not overthink it and just watch in release order. So we'll give you that along with some suggestions to make this as fun and painless as possible. The Terminator (1984)If you want a sci-fi action movie that's filmed with the pacing and sense of dread of a horror movie, you can't go wrong with the original. A legitimate classic of 1980s genre cinema, it has endured for a reason. If you only watch one movie in the franchise, this is the one!Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)If you only watch one other Terminator movie, make it 1991's bigger and more technically groundbreaking sequel. For those of you who want a more summer blockbuster action sensibility as opposed to the first film's horror undertones, you can just go ahead and watch Judgment Day on its own, as it does an excellent job getting you up to speed even if you haven't seen the original. Bigger action sequences and some eye-popping special effects make this one essential viewing.Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)Probably not as bad as you've heard, but not exactly essential viewing either. This one builds out the lore of how Skynet rose to power and has a few bonkers battle sequences, but if time is of the essence, stick to the first two movies. It's also the first entry in the franchise that starts messing with the canon in ways that future installments try to smooth out.Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009)The franchise's first expansion into TV has a devoted cult following, and with good reason! Still, that's a lot of viewing hours, and it isn't strictly faithful to the lore of the series as a whole. This can be viewed as its own self-contained alternate timeline within the Terminator universe.Terminator Salvation (2009)Terminator Salvation is a direct sequel to the events of Rise of the Machines…and thus a prequel to the first film. And despite starring Christian Bale at the height of his stardom as John Connor, it's…well, let's just say it's not essential viewing. But if you're keeping track so far, the canonical events of the franchise go from the first three movies to this one…which depicts events prior to the first film. Got it? Good, because it ain't getting any easier!Terminator Genisys (2015)This one is essentially a reboot of the entire franchise and…you know what? You can skip it. Trust us.Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Somewhat maligned upon release, but better than you've heard! We're back in alternate timeline territory, though, as this film ignores everything other than the first two movies and instead acts as a direct (if belated) sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Honestly, worth your time, especially if you're looking to condense the franchise to a more digestible three films (in this case The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Terminator: Dark Fate)Terminator Zero (2024)Netflix is the exclusive home of this first animated Terminator outing, made by the same anime studio who brought the classic Ghost in the Shell to screens. Terminator Zero functions both as a self-contained Terminator adventure (meaning you don't necessarily need knowledge of the rest of the franchise to enjoy and understand it) and also as something that enriches the lore of the films. Lushly animated and boasting a cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, Sonoya Mizuno, André Holland, and Ann Dowd, serious fans won't want to miss this.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Grandfather ParadoxThe central concept of this episode and the one we wanted to explore the most! This article has the most succinct explanation of a rather headache-y concept we've ever seen. “...the idea that a cause must precede its effect. 15 years ago the TERMINATOR franchise attempted to chart a bold new course by swapping original star Arnold Schwarzenegger for Christian Bale on top of the marquee. Did it work out? Well, you'll have to check out our latest commentary track to get our thoughts on that. The McG-directed entry featuring AVATAR's Sam Worthington remains polarizing a decade-and-a-half after its release, and we delve into the ins-and-outs of why this one had no fate but what it made for itself.
My usual partners (Gil, Mike & Oreo) are rejoined by Blogger Shahi Sabzevari (The Arnold Fans) & Filmmaker Jack Bennett (Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary) to sum up their favorite moments of the TERMINATOR saga. What moments in the comics somewhat predicted future movie sequels? What are some great scenes that don't get talked about enough outside of the usual quotes & iconic clips? After unanimously redeeming Terminator Salvation we got inspired to talk about our favourite rebel forces - because we love it when a plucky underdog militia takes on the big bad.. But first there's a quick quiz involving naming the apocalyptical themed movie based on the Chat GPT generated synopsis...wait...does that mean the machines are taking over...?
In episode 69 (nice) we revisit 2009's Terminator Salavtion and decide once and for all if this movie was harshly judged! We also discuss explosions, the various Terminator models, ranking the Terminator films, Christian Bale's on set freak-out, Sam Worthington's acting chops and who the hell is McG and why does he only have one name... John Connor is a fictional character and the male protagonist of the Terminator franchise. Created by writer/director James Cameron, the character is first referred to in the 1984 film The Terminator and first appears in its 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day (T2). In the character's first appearance, John is portrayed by Edward Furlong as a child, and briefly by Michael Edwards as an adult in a small role. Other actors have portrayed the character in subsequent films, including Nick Stahl, Christian Bale, and Jason Clarke. In addition, Thomas Dekker portrayed John Connor in the two-season television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The character serves as a protagonist in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Salvation (2009), the antagonist of the film Terminator Genisys (2015), and has a brief cameo in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) John Constantine (/ˈkɒnstənˌtaɪn/)[1] is a fictional antihero who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 (June 1985), and was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben. The titular Hellblazer,[2][3] Constantine is a working-class warlock, occult detective, and con man from Liverpool who is stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan wit, ruthless cunning, and constant chain smoking, but he is also a passionate humanitarian driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in his life. Originally a supporting character who played a pivotal role in the "American Gothic" Swamp Thing storyline, Constantine received his own comic in 1988. The musician Sting was a visual inspiration for the character.[4] The Hellblazer series was the longest-running and most successful title of DC's Vertigo imprint.[5] Empire ranked Constantine third in their 50 Greatest Comic Characters of All Time,[6] while IGN ranked him number 29 in its Top 100 Comic Book Heroes, and the character ranked number 10 in Wizard's Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time. The character made his live-action debut in the film Constantine (2005), played by Keanu Reeves. On television, Constantine was played in the television series Constantine by Matt Ryan, who later reprised the character in the Arrowverse series Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash, and several animated productions. Jenna Coleman later portrayed a female version of the character (and her ancestor) in the television series The Sandman, adapting both Constantines' roles from the comic series. Some writers who have written his stories have claimed to "see" him.[4][7][8]
The first two Terminator films inspired so many others, and continue to drive filmmakers and studios to take their own shots at contributing to the franchise today. While none of these sequels lived up to the promise of T1 and T2, each one put interesting ideas to work and some even took ambitious swings...that just didn't connect. The Deep Question: Rank the Terminator films from worst to best. This Week's Features:Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Terminator Genisys (2015)Terminator Salvation (2009)Message Jason and Ryan
This actually belongs in the Forever Defending category for me, undoubtedly... T2 set a very high bar and while these entires kind of know they won't top that, they all try new things that may or may not work. This works. And it's a true crime that it wasn't appreciated when it had it's day. This is still the best entry post T2. Enjoy, y'all.

Actor Alec Baldwin has been indicted again, charged with involuntary manslaughter by New Mexico prosecutors in the death cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The shooting on set during the production of the film, "Rust." Baldwin was allegedly four feet from the crew on set in a mock church pew when he used his right hand to reach across his body to grab the gun holstered on his left side. He was reportedly aiming the gun toward cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when he drew back the hammer and released it. The bullet first went through director Joel Souza's shoulder before striking Hutchins in the chest, killing her. Ever since the shooting death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin has claimed he didn't pull the trigger. Even after an FBI report contradicting Baldwin's account of the shooting saying the trigger had to have been pulled for the gun to fire, Baldwin still says he didn't pull the trigger. The FBI report says their testing proves the gun could not be made to fire without the pull of the trigger. Accidental discharge testing determined that the firearm used in the shooting -- a .45 Colt single-action revolver -- could not have fired without the trigger being pulled. The FBI Report also says, With the hammer in the quarter- and half-cock and fully cocked positions, the gun "could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger. Alec Baldwin says he didn't pull the trigger The armorer for the film Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also charged and she has been convicted and sentenced on manslaughter charges. In recorded Jailhouse phone calls Gutierrez-Reed blasts the jurors calling them "idiots" and "A-Holes". Prosecutors say the jailhouse recordings show how she really is outside of court. Gutierrez-Reed wants Alex Baldwin to go to jail too and says she won't testify at his upcoming trial if subpoenaed. On the set of Terminator: Salvation (2009), Christan Bale unleased a furious rant against cinematographer Shane Hurlbut. I speak on that issue as well as other problems that took place on the set of the film. WARNING: THIS EPISODE FEATURES EXPLICIT CONTENT. If 'Terminator Salvation' had a user manual, it would be one page long: 'Don't let the machines win. Also, don't yell at the crew.' Here we dive headfirst into the mayhem of "Terminator Salvation." Directed by McG, this film promises killer robots, Christian Bale's infamous on-set rant, and the eternal question: 'How did Skynet ever become self-aware but not aware enough to know where the resistance is?'With a plot that's as tangled as a bunch of tangled wires, "Terminator Salvation" is a rollercoaster ride of questionable decisions. Can robots go to therapy? They may want to after being in this movie. But here's the burning question: Does "Terminator Salvation" rise like a Phoenix (or Terminator) from the ashes of its mixed reviews, or is it just another misstep in the franchise? Join us as we reload our humor circuits, delivering our verdict on whether "Terminator Salvation" is a killer hit or a 'seriously, what were they thinking?' glitch in the matrix.Bad Movies Rule is a movie podcast about the movies you love even if no one else does.Leave us a voicemail at 262-757-8567, we answer them on our mailbag episodes. You can support Bad Movies Rule on Patreon here. You can join our community on Facebook and TikTok.You can email the show any movie-related questions for our mailbag episodes here.

For the first in the franchise, we get an entire story set in a post Judgment Day world. Despite the change in setting and mixing up the formula, critics were not impressed and the movie underperformed at the box office. But today we're revisiting Terminator 4 to only talk about what it does well! Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Anton Yelchin lead a great cast into some thrilling action, and the sci-fi twists are flying fast.Join the Best of the Rest discord: https://discord.gg/86P7jJXNPb Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/botrcast Email: bestoftherestpod@gmail.com Social Media @BotRCast on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Bonus content: Youtube Theme song (vocals) by Mark Benavides: Instagram Music by Mitch: Twitter, SoundCloud Logo by Alex Brinegar: https://beardodoesdesign.com/ Additional artwork by Phillip Chacon, C7Productions: Instagram
