Come with us to the early 2020s, when WB was busy making legacy sequels and canning random completed movies for tax breaks and check out "The Matrix Resurrections". One of the Wachowskis comes back under duress since the trilogy was going to become a tetralogy (quadrilogy?) whether they liked it or not, so they figured they may as well try to say something with it. It's very meta, oddly introspective, and sometimes a little sad while also still being over the top and loud. It's definitely interesting, if nothing else. Also this week: some great Keanu work, a possible Wachowski Rosetta stone, and the collapse of the industry.

It's the original end of "The Matrix" trilogy as we take a look at the very noisy "The Matrix Revolutions"! We've got a big CG battle loaded with characters we don't care about, we've got another visit with the Merovingian, and we've got a new Oracle (did you notice?!). Sense has largely left the building in this messy, loud, and frankly perplexing finale. Also this week: who's who in Zion, unsubtle imagery, and the answer is always hubris. "The Matrix" is BACK, baby, and it's bringing along WAY more money and WAY more special effects for "The Matrix Reloaded"! Get ready for MORE fighting, MORE Agent Smith, and MORE uncomfortably long gyrating rave scenes! What, you don't want that last thing? TOUGH, it's there and it ain't leaving! Also this week: too much movie, who's Tank, and story time with an 8 year old! Mr. Anderson! Come in, sit down, put on your comfiest headphones. It's time to discuss possibly the most iconic of Keanu Reeves' many iconic roles. It's time for "The Matrix", a movie that arguably had as big an impact on how Hollywood works as the original "Star Wars" did some twenty-two years before. Reeves is Neo, a man who finds out his world is not what he believed and he might be the Chosen One humanity needs to save it from its unwitting slavery. But first he needs to learn Kung Fu. Also this week: an unexpected "Trek" connection, that steak, and Reeves leads. [The Matrix: 2:41]

What happens when a painter/sculptor and a sci-fi writer want to make an art film but can only get the budget for an action movie? The very, very confused "Johnny Mnemonic". Watch in confusion as Keanu is told to switch off his usual, easy charm to play a fairly wooden courier! Be annoyed as rights issues and studio meddling turned the much more interesting bodyguard character into a dull sidekick. And wonder why, for the love of God, they put Henry Rollins in this thing. Also this week: the greatest monologue in cinema, Val's choice, and old Chris yells at cloud. With most of the world locked indoors, maybe all we really needed was a film with a simple message lacking in any cynicism. After your hosts' cool reception to "Bogus Journey" last week, did the more straightforward "Bill & Ted Face the Music" resonate with us? Listen and find out! Next stop on our Shore Leave jaunt is "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" and what can we say but: at least William Sadler is a delight. Your stalwarts find themselves a bit underwhelmed by this odd sequel, which maybe was a little TOO different from its predecessor. Something is just missing this time around, and no amount of weird robots or caked-up Martians can fix it. Also this week: sequel issues, more film trauma for little Chris, and forgetting their own rules.

EPISODE 713 - Scott Pearson - Simon & Schuster's Star Trek Novel Editor and Author Taking Us To New Places and BeyondThis episode features author and editor Scott Pearson sharing his woodland life in Carlton, Minnesota, and his multifaceted career in science fiction, Star Trek, and publishing. From fan to professional, he reveals how persistence and adaptability built his path through a rapidly changing industry.Scott describes his detached office amid the trees, a quiet hub for editing and writing. Publishing has evolved dramatically since his early days mailing manuscripts; self-publishing, once taboo, is now viable. His key advice: keep writing, finish stories, and explore contests or networks to break in. A lifelong Star Trek fan since grade school, he started with derivative sci-fi, shifted to literary fiction in college—his first published story about a Minnesota farming couple—then returned to genre via the Strange New Worlds contest win. This led to Star Trek short stories, a novella, and an ebook, plus anthology work blending sci-fi, mystery, horror, and thriller. His latest, the self-published The Sad Rains of Mars, collects a dozen sci-fi tales. As Star Trek's copy and developmental editor, Scott ensures fiction aligns with canon, verifying quotes by rewatching clips. He balances fandom with professionalism, enjoying stories while catching continuity gaps for "retcons." Fan fiction hones skills but stays non-commercial; licensed work requires agent connections and multi-layer approvals from publishers and Paramount. Conventions like Shore Leave connect writers and editors.Freelance editing—Star Trek novels, Baen Books, IDW comics, self-publishers—fills his days, often crowding personal writing despite a Monday-Thursday schedule. He spotlights Tales of the Weird World War, co-written novellas with Bill Leisner mashing genres in an alternate history of shapeshifting monsters, from 1940s noir to 1950s saucers.Key takeaway: Persistence through industry shifts, from fan roots to pro editing and original work, turns passion into a sustainable creative life—finish stories, honor canon, and balance paid gigs with personal projects.https://scott-pearson.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Shore Leave (Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), S1 E15) was recommended by He/Him, who said: "Velcome to FANTASY PLANET!"Okay, I'll be honest. 90% of the reason I'm recommending this episode is to see Khaki's reaction to the beginning of Star Trek's long, and weirdly specific, obsession with stereotyping the Irish. Aside from that, I like it because this one of the most lighthearted of the early Trek episodes, coming right after the incredibly tense "Balance of Terror." Ultimately, there's no antagonist, no one is hurt (well, permanently anyway), and everyone has a good time. It's just a chance for the actors to have a few nice character bits as the episode explores the mystery of the planet itself, which every show needs.Oh, and Kirk wanting a massage from Spock is a COMPLETELY PLATONIC desire, I swear!Shore Leave first aired on November 17, 1966, written by Theodore Sturgeon, and directed by Robert SparrPart I: Spock hijacks the Enterprise to take his crippled former captain, Christopher Pike, to the forbidden world of Talos IV. He then demands a court martial, where he uses the events of The Cage to tell the tale of Pike's captivity on the planet years earlierThe Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

It had been a while since either Brady or Ryan had seen Shore Leave, the famous, fever-dreamesque outing of the Original Series in which Bones is literally killed and then brought back to life -- an incident that probably isn't even the weirdest thing that happens in the episode -- and boy, had we forgotten some of the finer points. Join us as we discuss Trek's descent into madness, courtesy of the strange, brief Trek career of writer Theodore Sturgeon.

When everyone but Spock is exhausted from their space adventures, a shore leave planet starts gaslighting them about some dangerous illusions. But after no one can find the glade and the landing party gets stranded, a Caretaker appears and explains the amusement planet's safety precautions. How do you know if you can do a bit on your boss? Who is a little like Bruce Wayne but not really? What does Captain Kirk's snake tattoo say? It's the episode that approaches the uncanny valley from the opposite precipice with a glade in between.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Shore leave is a fundamental part of life at sea. It has been for centuries. The modern seafarer can spend up to 11 months on board a vessel during a contract, so getting on to dry land whenever possible can be an important form of rest and recuperation. But this custom is under threat. A recent report by the ITF Seafarers' Trust showed that a quarter of seafarers surveyed said they did not get any shore leave during the entirety of their contract. For those that did manage to get ashore, nearly half said they spend less than three hours ashore. From visa requirements, a simple lack of time, or even the prohibitive cost of a ride to the port gate, seafarers face many barriers to getting shore when one of the very limited opportunities presents itself. Can anything be done to halt the extinction process? Joining Joshua on this week's podcast are: Tim Hill, chief executive, Stella Maris Ben Bailey, director of programme, Mission to Seafarers Several serving seafarers aboard vessels across the world

“Handsome Ransom” (October 25, 2009) Let's say this at the top: We are both fans in general of The Venture Bros, but this extremely homosocial show has a tendency to tiptoe up to being full-on gay and then laughing it all off as a joke. It's a product of its time, and even explicitly gay characters like The Alchemist and Shore Leave don't get their own episodes. So when it comes to picking one installment of the Adult Swim series that comes closest, we had to go with the one with Captain Sunshine, which sort of works but also makes the mistake of approaching pedo humor in the same manner it did gay humor. And that's kind of a fuck-up? Warning: Despite the presence of Brock Samson the art, Brock does not appear in this episode. We apologize. There are two Patreon-exclusive episode that tie into this one, if you're willing to pay the very low fee of $1 a month! There's an episode all about The Tick: https://www.patreon.com/posts/cartoons-that-us-129745700 And one about Jonny Quest: https://www.patreon.com/posts/cartoons-that-us-131953014 Both have a lot to do with how Venture Bros. ended up becoming the show it did!
