Send us a text2024 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!NOTE: Approximately 35 punk rock band names are concealed in these show notes. Play along! It's the end of October, which means the four misfits of TGTPTU are back with a special Birth-/ Halloween/Election Day episode, interrupting their regular Season 13 4x4 programming to bring you a tale fitting this celebratory trifecta: auteur director Jeremy Saulnier's punk-horror-antifascist classic GREEN ROOM (2015). As a low budget, mostly practical, minimally computer effects (dare one say “NoFX”?) horror/suspense movie, Green Room follows a gang of four bouncing souls in the fictional band the Ain't Rights as they tour by van the Pacific Northwest, stealing fuel and perhaps sick of it all when they find themselves less than jake at the end of their bankroll. In desperation, they take on as the replacements a gig at a club full of laces and braces.  Unlike the typical band road trip setup where their fan base may begin to lag, wagon might break down, or they become pennywise and pound foolish, the members of the Ain't Rights' world turns upside-down after playing for that crass, bad religion of white supremacy, i.e., those subhumans we call skinheads, when, post-show gathering their gear, the green day of these four adolescents turns rancid upon discovering a murdered young woman in the titular green room.  Like World War II's Op Ivy, Ain't Rights' members no doubt scheme and raise a black flag of no surrender to escape the compound, but these youths prove only a minor threat and their plan all fugazi when it encounters the racists' experienced violence. Even when these four self-ascribed “misfits” are helped by a violent femme (played by Imogen Poots, friend the one found murdered), the stooges are outclassed and outsmarted.  Soon the joy division occurs, rending the group who has bandmembers played by Anton Yelchin (rest in power), Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner come face to face with real murderers and violence, including a skinhead band's strung out lead singer but also a stone-cold bearded Patrick Stewart in charge who has attack dogs sic viciously the youths with a sloppy, realistic violence unlike one sees on the television. The clash is epic as the Ain't Rights soon accept without fear suicidal tendencies to try to get out of the jam. And unlike other movies in the horror genre, these youth of today are lack raging hormones (a.k.a. “ramones”?). Yes, Saulneir's, a.k.a. Jay Dawg's, film lacks onscreen intercourse. But while no sex, pistols and violence galore. And for those sensitive to cussing, little guttermouth language is used.   So join us, if not for Halloween, then for Birthday XXI of descendent/offspring Jack and/or Election Day (R.I.P. all the dead Kennedys) for our discussion of this film not part of an AFI list.  Also throughout the ep, Ken, Jack, Thomas, and Ryan explore themes of coming of age and of guilt for accepting money/work/recognition in the face fascism, but describing these are harder for yours truly to conceal punk band names here within show notes, except perhaps to say it's one big, repeated love fest for the flick, or, hmm, might one be permitted to say “circle jerks”?THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

It's two movies for the price of one today! (Podcast remains free.) In 2014, Paul Schrader directed Nicolas Cage and Anton Yelchin in a thriller about a CIA agent with frontotemporal dementia trying to hunt down an old enemy before his mind goes. The money guys took the film away from him, edited it into a totally anonymous Redbox movie themselves, and released it as "A Paul Schrader Film" anyway. He was contractually prohibited from disparaging the result, but Schrader, along with the cast and producer Nicholas Winding Refn, publicly disowned the released version, and Paul drank himself into a stupor. Several years later, during the editing process on First Reformed, he returned to DYING OF THE LIGHT and made it into something between a director's cut and a fascinating work of video collage art called DARK, which is legally unreleasable but available to view for free. It's so nuts, and it changed the course of his career. We're gonna talk about it! This week on the podcast, we're ostensibly talking about Fright Night, the 2011 vampire action thriller remake starring Colin Farrell and directed by Craig Gillespie. But here's the thing: that movie very bad and we don't want to talk about it. You know what movie is good actually? Fright Night, the 1985 vampire horror movie starring Chris Sarandon and directed by Tom Holland. That's the one we want to talk about. Along the way we'll survey the history of vampire movies, eulogize Anton Yelchin, and try to decide if Dave Franco is a good actor. Connor doesn't understand the American West. Green Room" is a 2015 thriller film directed by Jeremy Saulnier, known for its intense and relentless portrayal of a punk rock band's harrowing encounter with a group of neo-Nazi skinheads. The film follows the band, The Ain't Rights, as they reluctantly accept a gig at a remote, rural venue. After witnessing a murder backstage, they find themselves trapped in the 'Green Room', with the violent and ruthless skinheads led by Darcy Banker, played by Patrick Stewart, determined to eliminate all witnesses. What sets "Green Room" apart is its unflinching and visceral portrayal of violence and survival. The tension builds steadily throughout the film, as the band members desperately try to find a way out while facing the relentless aggression of their captors. The movie's gritty and claustrophobic atmosphere, combined with strong performances, particularly from the late Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots, creates an unsettling and suspenseful experience. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Cue the sub-House of Cards politicking, Connie Nielsen as a bottle-blonde ladder-climber, and Sarah Paulson as one of the least likely Cage love interests of all time! Then there's Paul Schrader's fatally compromised political thriller Dying of the Light, starring Cage as an old CIA flack whose quest for revenge against his Muslim terrorist captor 20 years ago is complicated by his failing mental state. There's glimmers of something interesting here; too bad the studio ripped the film away from Schrader and turned it into a blank, hokey mess! With the Dads decimated by a combination of birthdays, studying and paddle board salesman conventions it's left to Peter and Sidey to bring us the epic conclusion to the strong Puppet theme which has taken over this week's show. Starting with the Top 5 Puppets, naturally, the guys are on hand to discuss some rarely featured films and tv. Listen in, or don't, there's no strings attached and it's all very heart felt. Sorry. All you have to do to emotionally reconcile with your son is saw your own arm off in Jodie Foster's  THE BEAVER (2011) which asks its viewer to suspend disbelief for a number of wild ideas, including that it would be possible to move an enormous mural from a downtown city wall to a bedroom without ripping it or damaging it any way, either during the removal or reapplication of the painting process. Mel Gibson plays Walter Black, once a devoted husband, loving father and successful businessman whose suicide is unfortunately interrupted by a hand puppet he found discarded in a dumpster. Allowing The Beaver (Mel Gibson) to talk for him, Walter begins to reintegrate back into his life, with the furry glove enriching the people around him in various nonsensical ways dictated by a screenplay so mechanically obvious that Mel hits rock bottom at exactly two-thirds the running time. Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence are fine actors stuck in a chemistry-less dead brother romance sub-plot which has the pair arrested seconds after graffitiing a wall late at night only for Lawrence to then presumably return in broad daylight and complete her design without any interference and also has nothing whatsoever to do thematically with the main story. Foster's acting performance is probably fine in a thin role as Walter's wife which requires her to instantly accept the premise (good job someone did) but also have a threesome with the hairy, wild-eyed wood-eater and the Beaver. Pedestrian direction, an uneven tone and an almost completely humourless approach all contrive to make this uninteresting to watch even if you're tempted to, because despite Gibson mining his own pain, this is little more than a cynical public image rescue exercise designed to garner sympathy. Give this one a miss folks. To the legions of CAPTAIN SCARLETT AND THE MYSTERONS fans now flocking to the podcast in eager anticipation of their favourite show finally getting the Bad Dads treatment, I can only apologise because just as with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA I didn't watch this one and so can't fairly comment on the first ever episode of this classic Super Mario Bros Animation thing.
