Dan Golding is here to discuss minutes 106-110 of The Empire Strikes Back! We talk about Ben Burtt's frustrations, intense pedal points, a nasal brass canon, free fanfares, Empire being an "editor's film," and how the music is "meanwhile" (sounds strange, but it'll make sense when you listen to the episode).

Welcome to episode 40 of The Filmumentaries Podcast. Now I am a lover of movie books. I own a lot of them. I have owned more than I now have. Some favourites include Alan Arnold's Once Upon a Galaxy - The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, Paul Sammon's Future Noir - The making of Blade Runner, Steven Bach's – Final Cut. So many to name. But what I didn't know, I am embarrassed to say, that I had no idea about fellow Brit author Jay Glennie's books on The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Trainspotting until pretty recently. A kind twitter follower mentioned Jay and his books. Immediately I could see that Jay had a great eye for the huge stills that are included within his books, but also that there was a clear and engaging narrative throughout. In late November 2021 Jay and I spoke over Zoom.https://www.coattail-publications.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)

On today's episode, we honor the life and work of Jeremy Bulloch, who helped bring the role of Boba Fett to life, creating a compelling on-screen persona that paved the way for the character's legendary appeal. We'll share statements from Bulloch's website, from castmates, and from George Lucas himself. We'll also revisit a write-up from Alan Arnold's Once Upon a Galaxy: The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, which helps to draw a line all the way from Bulloch's performance to Pedro Pascal's in The Mandalorian.

Did you know that you're a wildly creative person? If you don't believe it, ask Alan Arnold. Alan's worked with creative people for decades, and has now channeled his own creative juices to produce "Chaos Can't." This book reveals how the best parts of you are thwarted, opposed, and undermined by forces designed to keep you from offering the truest parts of yourself to the world around you. This was an AMAZING conversation. We know you'll love it!

It's flashback time! Back in 2014, I did a series of episodes looking at interviews conducted with George Lucas by Alan Arnold for the seminal book Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back. Here's what you'll be hearing about in this final look back: Lucas talks candidly about the practical and creative sides of his nature, how he deals with them, how his preferred method of working was changed by Star Wars, and what he’s had to do as a result of that change. All right, time to dive in once more... Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Join the community at http://Patreon.com/sw7x7 to get access to bonus episodes and other insider rewards.***

It's flashback time! Back in 2014, I did a series of episodes looking at interviews conducted with George Lucas by Alan Arnold for the seminal book Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back. Here's what to expect in today's episode, based on what I wrote back then: [Lucas] talks about the financial investment he made by committing to Empire. What will it take to break even, what will happen if it doesn’t make enough money, and what he dreams of creating with the hoped-for revenues of the film, as well as the challenges of making Star Wars a self-sustaining enterprise. It is pretty astounding stuff (what he reveals, that is). Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! Back in 2014, I did a series of episodes looking at interviews conducted with George Lucas by Alan Arnold for the seminal book Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back. Here's what I said about this episode at the time: What’s more, memory is a slippery thing. We know Lucas has changed his story over the years about the movies and the process and so forth … and I’m certain not all of those changes are intentional. (Unlike his Special Edition changes!) Part of it is for public perception and posterity, to be sure. And, eventually, all of us as people remember the stories the way that we want them to be told, and maybe the facts change, get mixed around, edited, ret-connned in the process. So today, we dive in to the first of multiple Lucas interview episodes. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! My story is the embodiment of taking perseverance and turning it into passion. What is perseverance? Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite the difficulty. To persevere is to persist in a state or undertaking in spite of counter-influences, opposition or discouragement. In my life, perseverance is growing up in the inner city of Flint, Michigan. Gangs, violence, and drugs were a part of everyday life. Recorded by John Kiriakou, Host of Loud & Clear on 105.5 FM & 1390 AM in Washington DC.
