fWotD Episode 2831: Untitled Goose Game Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 3 February 2025 is Untitled Goose Game.Untitled Goose Game is a 2019 indie puzzle stealth game developed by House House and published by Panic Inc. Players control a goose who bothers the inhabitants of an English village. Players must use the goose's abilities to manipulate objects and non-player characters to complete objectives. It was released for macOS, Nintendo Switch, Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.The idea for Untitled Goose Game originated from a stock photograph of a goose that a House House employee posted in the company's internal communications. Inspired by Super Mario 64 and the Hitman series, House House worked on combining stealth mechanics with a lack of violence to create humorous in-game scenarios. The game's unusual name came from a last-minute decision in preparing the title as an entry for a games festival. The music, curated by composer Dan Golding, uses short clips from six of Claude Debussy's Préludes. It has been described as "reactive music" because the clips are played after certain actions. The game was released on macOS, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on 20 September 2019, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 17 December 2019.Untitled Goose Game received positive reviews, with critics praising its gameplay and humour. The game received the D. I. C. E. Award for Game of the Year and the Game Developers Choice Award for Game of the Year, among other accolades. Dan Golding was nominated for an ARIA award for the music. By the end of 2019, Untitled Goose Game had sold more than a million copies. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 3 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Untitled Goose Game on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

The survival of American Indian and Alaska Native languages is essential to the success of tribal communities and Native ways of life. However, without urgent and sustained intervention, far too many Native languages risk extinction within the coming decades. In this episode of The Sentinel, we highlight the urgency of this issue, and examine the creative and innovative solutions that many tribal communities are undertaking to counteract language loss. First, we hear from Daniel Golding (Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe), producer of the documentary “Language is Life,” which aired on the PBS network as part of the “Native America” series. Golding sheds light on the inherent challenges of revitalizing Native languages and his own unique personal perspective as he embarked upon learning the Quechan language. Next, we present segments from the “Native Language Preservation” panel discussion held at the 2024 NCAI Mid Year Convention & Marketplace in Cherokee, North Carolina. Representatives from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Cherokee Nation, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe participated in a lively discussion at the Third General Assembly. Panelists recounted the challenges of language preservation, but also shared strategies, projects and techniques that have resulted in successful outcomes for their tribal communities.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has gotta be the only good film to come out of IP mining. I cannot recommend Dan Golding's video essay A Theory of Film Music enough, and also highly recommend his book Star Wars After Lucas (he also has a great talk on Nostalgia Piano, but I think that one might have just been a conference exclusive) You can follow the show on Twitter (@goingrogue_pod), Instagram (@goingrogue_podcast), or Tumblr or Bluesky (@goingroguepod) or for slightly less hinged content, follow @tansyclipboard on twitter or @tansyg.bsky.social on Bluesky. Composer John Williams is the defining sound of Hollywood and, arguably, the most widely listened to composer in the world. Kirk decided he needed some help tackling Williams' towering musical legacy, so he enlisted Australian author and musician Dan Golding as his tour guide through Williams' musical world, with a special focus on his groundbreaking score for 1980's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE:Dan's book Star Wars After Lucas, his ABC radio show Screen Sounds and his podcast Art of the Score"Liberdade" by Dili Allstars"Celebration" from Push Me Pull You by Dan Golding, 2016The Adventures of Robin Hood score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, 1938Excerpts from Untitled Goose Game as assembled by Dan Golding"Right Time" by Mighty Diamonds/Sly & Robbie, 1976"Peter Gunn" by Henry Mancini, 1959"1. Dan Golding is here to discuss minutes 106-110 of The Empire Strikes Back! We talk about Ben Burtt's frustrations, intense pedal points, a nasal brass canon, free fanfares, Empire being an "editor's film," and how the music is "meanwhile" (sounds strange, but it'll make sense when you listen to the episode).
Louise Blain explores the lighter side of gaming soundtracks with a look at music for some of the wittiest games on the screen and talks to composer Grant Kirkhope. The programme looks at some of the ways humour appears in games and in gaming scores and features music from Oli Woods' 'Worms WMD', Peter McConnell's 'Psycholnauts 2', River Boy's 'Cult of the Lamb', Christopher Heral's 'Rayman Legends', Ryan Ike's 'West Of Loathing', Dan Golding's 'Untitled Goose Game', Toby Fox's 'Undertale' and the 'Stanley Parable' from the Blake Robinson Synthetic Orchestra. The programme also features cues from 'Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope', 'Yooka-Laylee' and 'Kingdons of Amalar - Reckoning' by Grant Kirkhope and this month's HiScore is Gareth Coker's 'Immortals - Fenyx Rising'.
Film music PhD researcher Conor Power joins me for a discussion about The Empire Strikes Back minutes 31-35. We're finishing up the Battle of Hoth along with some shrill piccolos, rollicking pianos, an "extra minor" Luke theme, and a brass line that we both fancy for reasons we try to figure out. As the episode title suggests, the music in this cue seems to act like a referee keeping score between the Rebels and Empire (find out who the musical "winner" of these minutes is at the end of the episode). We also discuss the "Feminine Romantic Cliche" (FRC) as it pertains to Leia's theme and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 02:44 - Ben Burtt's AT-AT sound design. 08:18 - The music acting as a referee. 14:51 - Piercing shrill piccolo. 22:55 - Foreshadowing the Asteroid Field. 24:16 - Comm voices match visual cuts. 25:51 - These pianos! ❤️ 34:27 - Luke's theme "extra minor." 42:44 - Stark, despondent Han and Leia scene. 45:12 - Why does this brass part stick out to us (in a good way)? 51:30 - Why the Force theme here? 1:03:08 - Tchaikovsky 4th Symphony + using spidey senses. 1:09:07 - Rebels gaining the upper hand (musically). 1:15:32 - Harry Potter comparison (joking chromatic string texture). 1:21:48 - Leia's theme and Feminine Romantic Cliche (FRC). 1:30:48 - Music + Millennium Falcon vroooom = perfection. 1:33:55 - "Captain Solo! Captain Solo!" Is Threepio's line doubled? 1:39:10 - Who actually wins the Battle of Hoth? 1:43:59 - ESB's more subtle dynamic between Han and Leia. 1:53:24 - Who wins the musical battle in these minutes? 1:54:17 - SWMM Questionnaire Things to Check Out: Dominic Sewell's analysis of 3M4/4M1 "Luke's First Crash" - https://youtu.be/dfKjTX7gpNs Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, 1st movement - https://youtu.be/iE9LhoKEmBk Scherzo for X-Wings (John Williams) from Star Wars: The Force Awakens - https://youtu.be/xJzuanMUuS4 Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra (John Williams) from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - https://youtu.be/1IFmRniWa0U "Running to McGonagall" (John Williams) from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - https://youtu.be/T0SchcBWq7c ("Thinking about Marion's Theme") Art of the Score Episode 1: Raiders of the Lost Ark - Part 1 - https://www.artofthescore.com.au/podcast/2017/2/16/episode-1-raiders-of-the-lost-ark-part-1 Art of the Score Episode 2: Raiders of the Lost Ark - Part 2 - https://www.artofthescore.com.au/podcast/2017/2/16/episode-2-raiders-of-the-lost-ark-part-2 ANH 18: The Swashbucklers (Minutes 86-90 with Dan Golding) - https://youtu.be/5xFFLXruO0Y Complete Catalogue of the Musical Themes of Star Wars (by Frank Lehman): https://franklehman.com/starwars/. Dan Golding is back, and ahhh OKAY, we need to talk about the fact that Luke's theme plays like a pop anthem when Han lays eyes on the Millennium Falcon (!!!) In this episode, we examine the musical devices that contribute to that epic reveal, discuss John Powell's internal logic, evaluate Powell's underscore, talk about nostalgia in the Star Wars franchise, and more. Turns out there are lots of great conversation starters in minutes 61-65 of Solo: A Star Wars Story! Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 03:56 - Listening to the beginning of the minutes. 09:43 - Do various Solo themes all kinda sound the same? 17:36 - Harry Potter + Nightmare Before Christmas vibes when they're walking up to the Millennium Falcon. 24:43 - Listening to the Millennium Falcon reveal moment. 25:38 - Luke's theme (the Star Wars Main Theme), John Powell's internal logic in using it, reminiscence therapy. 31:50 - Pop chords, The Rise of Skywalker trailer. 38:12 - The Solo trailer. 41:26 - Anthemic Main Theme. Augmented melody, metrical shift that emphasizes strong beats, simple harmony, suspensions, violin tremolo upper pedal point, choir "ahhh"... it's full bore! 45:16 - Dan's out-of-the-box personal choir, ongoing debate in film music re: mixing real instruments in a way that purposely makes them sound like digital instruments. 55:45 - Effortless weaving of themes. 57:47 - Enfys Nest briefly shows up, percussive 3-note pattern, hear me out: Shostakovich String Quartet No.8 Mvt. 4? 1:09:55 - Thumbs up to John Powell's underscoring. 1:15:07 - Donald Glover's vocal performance. 1:21:43 - Does the Millennium Falcon deserve its own theme? Listen back to this 2019 Talk with Jeni Paay, Flavia Marcello, and Dan Golding. Architects and planners don’t just plan for the present—they imagine the future. In past times of crisis and upheaval, architects have thought beyond the realm of the possible, creating new visions of the future that reimagine how people can once again live harmoniously in cities. We are currently facing new times of disharmony and uncertainty but the crisis is not world war it is global warming. Post-war designs for the future hoped to shape society in new and radical ways, including: Bruno Taut’s City Crown, 1919, Le Corbusier’s Radiant City, 1920, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City, 1958 and Archigram’s Plug-in city, 1964. How many of these utopian visions eventuated? Did they influence the design of the cities we live in today? Can we connect how we live today to these imaginings of harmonious and idyllic living? In looking at past examples of future thinking, we see the importance of designers thinking beyond the boundaries of what is possible when designing for the future. The impossible becomes possible only when thinking beyond the realm of the possible. How will today’s architects respond to current uncertainty? Adaptable and sustainable architectural design, like that of Glenn Murcutt, is one way to shape the future of the built environment. What else can we do? This event is presented by Smart Cities Research Institute at the Swinburne University of Technology. This event is supported by RACV.
