In this conversation, Allen and Pablo discuss the concept of The Real versus The Artificial. Allen shares his personal journey of transformation and how he came to write his book, 'Risk the Real.' They explore these important questions: What is Real? What is the origin of Reality? What is Artificial? What are the consequences of choosing one versus the other? How do we Risk the Real? Allen Arnold discusses the importance of risking towards the real and choosing God as our true North. He emphasizes that risk is normal and necessary in life and that we should risk boldly with God. Allen also highlights the need to recognize and let go of counterfeit sources of life, including technology. He shares his personal journey of healing and restoration in Jesus and encourages listeners to be all in for God. The conversation explores the power of living a life fully dependent on God and embracing the real over the artificial.
In today's episode, Stasi invites Allen Arnold, author, speaker, and member of the Wild at Heart team, into the studio for an insightful conversation on his new book Risk the Real. Allen encourages listeners to step away from the artificial distractions of our modern world as well as the counterfeit narratives being offered, and instead embrace the story God is telling, the True Story and the one He created us to live authentically with Him in. The invitation is to be entwined with Jesus, living a life rooted in the real and characterized by love, creativity, strength, intimacy, and joy.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: Isaiah 51:1-3 (NIV) — “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many. The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins;he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.Colossians 1:15-17 (NLT) — Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see — such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.John 1:1-4 (NLT) — In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.…..ALLEN ARNOLDWebsite: https://withallen.comTwitter: @thestoryofwithALLEN ARNOLD BIOAllen Arnold is an author, speaker, and Executive Producer of Content for Wild at Heart—the worldwide ministry founded by New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge. “Do you want Story 1 or Story 2?” When God asked Allen this question, he weighed his options. What did God mean? Should he cancel his surgery and see what God was inviting him into? Using the nodules in his throat as the backdrop, Allen takes us through the dramatic lesson God taught him about our stories with God. Stasi welcomes Karen Christakis and Stacey Burton of the Wild at Heart team into the studio for a candid conversation that quickly leads to how intentionally God is moving on our behalf—even when we aren't able to see it. What matters most to Jesus is always our hearts, even more than rescuing us from the hard things we plead with him to change. As you listen to this podcast, you will hear the importance of stepping back to honor our stories in order to recognize the ways God is pursuing us and forging us into His very image of love.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: James 1:2 (NKJV) — My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, Romans 5:3-5 (MSG) — There's more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we're hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we're never left feeling shortchanged. Isaiah 43:2 (NLV) — When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the rivers, they will not flow over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. Allen constantly crushed his goals at the world's largest publishing company as a triple espresso, hard driving, win at all costs executive. Then he had a life-changing meeting with his manager who told him no one on his 18-person team could stand working with him. That started a painful but amazing shift from measuring life by performance to doing life WITH God and, the difference has been like moving from night to day. Special Guest: Allen Arnold.

Human beings were created by God as unique individuals and have been given the ability to create. So where do we find the balance between creating something completely new and original, and fitting in with today's publishing world? Genre expectations are deeply established, but if God has called us to explore new directions within our work, how can we navigate that and still have a publishing career? In today's episode, Josiah, Lori, and Gabby share clear and practical thoughts that illuminate many sides of this issue.Show notes:- Comment on this episode on our blog!- Become a supporter and get access to exclusive Story Embers updates, swag, and more! Sometimes it's good to get "triggered". Like when you listen to a podcast that pushes your buttons, reach out to the host of said podcast, and end up having a wonderful podcast conversation of your own, processing said triggering. That's what today's episode is all about, with Allen Arnold, said co-host of the Wild at Heart podcast. The topic of the day, btw, is expectations. Thus, the triggering. So here's your assignment. 1. Go listen to this week's Wild at Heart podcast "Rethink Your Summer": https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rethink-your-summer/id260843816?i=1000611270690 2. Note any triggering that pops up. 3. Come back and meet us here to process it.
Allen woke up one morning and his voice was gone. Literally, it was just a whisper. The challenge is that he uses his voice all the time speaking at seminars, teaching, and co-hosting a world-renowned podcast. Two days before surgery, while mowing the grass, God asks, “Allen, do you want Story 1 or Story 2?” Having no idea what that meant, he sat down and started asking the Lord for understanding. Then, he chose to enter into a story that would change his life and become the motivation behind his brand new book. Special Guest: Allen Arnold.
“The world is accelerating in the wrong direction. It feels like all we're doing is trying to fix what's broken. And it isn't working. We're exhausted, overwhelmed, and losing heart. Where is God in all this? Well, he's living a different story. A story he's inviting us into.” That's the back cover introduction to Allen's new book, The Eden Option. In this conversation, the guys dive in and explore a homeward journey, not to the Eden of the past, but a new Eden discovered in Christ. Union, rest, community, creativity, miracles, and hope, in this podcast Allen shares his journey into trust and maturing faith. Please rate, review, share, and subscribe!

Author, speaker, and coach Allen Arnold, my guest on this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist, says that there are two worldviews we can live in as Christians. One is what most folks, even most Christians, seem to experience - a worldview where God is an intangible presence whom we hope to please but who is ultimately detached from our daily lives. The other worldview is the one shared by Adam and Even way back in the Garden of Eden - a worldview where God is walking with us and connected to us in a real, ever-present way. Allen says the challenge Christians face is to move from that more detached worldview to what he calls The Eden Option. It's the option we were always meant to live in, the option that was lost with Adam and Eve's failings in the face of temptation, but it's something we can return to. And as artists, that will mean going from trying to be creative for God to co-creating with God. Allen and I talk about the four-fold framework of returning to the Eden Option, and you'll be inspired by this life-changing message. Take a listen! This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we travel to France and discuss Ratatouille. Everyone in this movie has identity issues, listening to who the world told them they are. The antagonist in this movie is the fear of believing who we could be. But creativity is seeing a world that doesn't exist, and working to make that vision a reality. Through embracing our unique gifts and passion, we transform ourselves and the world around us. Pour yourself a glass of something delicious, and let's discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What's your favorite restaurant? Meal? What is one of your favorite things to do? What do you enjoy deeply? It could be hiking, gardening, woodworking, cooking, flying, exercising…what fills your heart with passion? How have other people responded to your passion? How have you lost your passion? Where did it go? Do you relate to the rats in the movie—just trying to survive, not die, doing enough to get by? Or do you embrace your passion, even though it's risky? What does it mean to be creative? What future do you envision that you feel called to create? How has that been opposed? Where do you feel caught in between worlds—not a human, not a rat? What does it mean to be true to yourself? When do you follow the recipe? When do you go off script? Why are you drawn to repeat what's been done before? What would it feel like to improvise? Paul McDonald and Allen Arnold tackle our first series with The Chosen. What would it be like to rediscover the Bible as an invitation to the unknown? God's framework of story is woven throughout the world, both in the universe and in the Bible. And we find that following the Bigger Story of following Jesus always feels impossible and risky, but leads to the discovery and revelation of our truer selves. Join us as we dive into this series. Questions How would you describe the personality of Jesus? What Bible stories are you most familiar with? If you put yourself in that same situation, how does it change the feel of the story? God gives you a choice. Do you want to spend your days in Story 1 or Story 2? Unfortunately, most choose Story 1—small stories of low risk, high control and quick answers where comfort is valued more than what God's up to. You wouldn't watch a Story 1 movie but often end up living it. AndSons podcast producer Allen Arnold joins Sam and Blaine to share his desire to stay in Story 2—a costly place of wonder, mystery, risk, adventure, and intimacy...with no guarantees other than God. Choosing that path gave him his voice back in more ways than one. And he's using it to invite others into a life of Story 2. Paul McDonald and Allen Arnold are expanding our palette with Somewhere in Time. We explore our core longing to be known. We look at our pursuit of beauty and the extreme lengths we will go to pursue it. And we also ask ourselves about the story we are living in: while we say we know that God can make the impossible possible, how much impossible do we really think he can make possible. Join us as we discover our stories in this movie. Join us as we discover our stories in this movie. Questions Where has beauty captured your attention? Your heart? Are you living more in Story 1 or Story 2? Which story would stir your heart the most? What will you risk if you know God is inviting you into something? We're wrapping up this "influential people" series with a final reprise from the vault. We recorded our conversation with Allen Arnold back in Dec of 2020 -- you remember 2020, right? -- and the echoes of his message have been reverberating in my head ever since. Creativity isn't a side project. It's not the thing you do in retirement or after all the real work is done. Doing something creative is actually core to who we are and essential to the world around us. So take a listen, and then do something crazy -- go create.
Today’s guest on The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur Podcast is Allen Arnold, an author, speaker, and coach with a passion for awakening people’s hearts to actively pursue their dreams and creativity with God. He shares about how he shifted from being the “I make it happen” guy (regardless of the casualties that happened in the process) to learning how to live and work WITH God and FROM sonship. His story is a “Grace Over Grind” kind of testimony where Arnold is experiencing the supernatural productivity, wisdom, and favor that flows from working in the power of God’s rest and grace.
Welcome to the Determined to Dance podcast with your host, Jennifer Hallmark. Today’s episode, “Vision: Dreams and Dancing” focuses on the dreams in our heart and the vision we need to see them fulfilled. Are you ready? The world would have us march to its chaotic beat but God invites us to dance in His will and His way. Let’s take a moment to be energized, refreshed, and motivated to face the day, one spin and twirl at a time. Show Notes: Vision: Dreams and Dancing God plants dreams in our hearts as lights to the path of his will. Long after I wrote this sentence, I pondered its meaning. I believe with all my heart that God gives us dreams or visions, those aspirations or hopes for the present and the future. I’ve never thought of the path to God’s will as lit by our dreams but it makes sense. In His plan and purpose for us, the dreams he places within are the perfect vehicle to move us forward, from one place to the next. We dream of going to school, finally getting out of school, finding a career, a home, a place, and people to call our own. We are forever fancying the kind of future we see played out in books, movies, or other people’s lives. Dreams or visions of what could be, should be, keep us in the dance. And what a wonderful gift a dream is. Children have no trouble dreaming. Only when our imaginings have not come to pass in the way we envision do we start to lose the ability to dream. Let’s learn from the little ones when it comes to dreams and dancing. First, children conceive. They constantly daydream and imagine life to the full. They are wide open to accept the vision that God plants within their hearts. I’ll never forget my days as a pre-teen, imagining my future as a published author. I spent hours writing and thinking about books with my name on them and fame and fortune. Second, children believe. They don’t overanalyze or doubt when a dream is first birthed in their hearts. They instead embrace them to the full. I’ll never consider it a waste that I once thought of being a ballerina, a singer, and an artist. It has been part of who I am. I took dance lessons at one time, sang at church, and dabbled in all forms of art over the years and though I never became what I thought I might, my life has been richer because of those dreams. And third, children receive. Youngsters open their hearts to dreaming and allow them to light their path. Dreams grow us and enlarge our place in the world. As adults, though, we sometimes allow the lights to dim and fade. How many stories have you heard from others about the good old days? It’s easy to think about that one time we danced and how wonderful it was? But why did they retire so soon from their dreams? What about you? Have you seen your vision of life fall to the wayside, dim beyond the point of being re-lit? God is holding out his hand, right now, as He stands on the dance floor. He placed those dreams within your heart for a reason and longs for them to burn bright again. CS Lewis said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” I like that. And here’s something Allen Arnold told me years ago that I’ve kept hidden in my heart. He said, “It is time to dream new dreams and tell new stories. Keep your eyes on what is before you rather than behind you.” A good word as we accept the outstretched hand of God once again. He is more than ready to resurrect an old dream or even plant a new one within your heart. Let’s ask him, shall we? Father God, by faith, we take hold of your hand and say yes to your dream. Whether it’s a dream rekindled or one brand new, as long as You are with us, we step onto the path lit by the vision. Like a child, we are eager to see where you are leading. Have your way, Lord, every day for the rest of our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen. I’m ready to dream. I know you are too. Let’s walk down the path together in childlike wonder. Next week,
My time with Allen Arnold was such a gift. He totally breathed new life into the concepts of creativity and living life as a true adventure. Allen Arnold is an author (The Story of With and Chaos Can’t) and speaker. He is also the Executive Producer of Content for John and Stasi Eldredge’s ministry, Wild at Heart. In short, Allen’s passion is awakening people’s hearts to pursue their dreams and creativity with God. As Allen so poignantly says in our interview, when we bring something new into existence, we are “dancing with God to create good and beautiful things.” As a former fiction publisher, Allen oversaw the launch of more than 500 novels. He has now turned his attention to helping people live a better story. My hope is that by listening to Allen’s words today, he may inspire you and your heart in the midst of your own story as it unfolds in all of its creativity and adventure.
We take a peek into The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) starring Ben Stiller, Kristin Wiig, and Sean Penn. Paul McDonald, Allen Arnold, and Patrick Creehan discuss how God invites us to engage in life and adventure, how we have to pursue the recovery of our hearts, and how failure can lead to a clarification of our purpose and identity. Nonfiction books with stories using the narrative arc are almost guaranteed to be successful. Former publisher and writing coach Allen Arnold says that well-written stories engage readers, draw readers in, and make the content memorable. “In today's world of distraction with so little time to read, you have to compete for a reader's attention,” says Allen. “It can't be enough just to say, this is something that I thought you might want to read, I've written a book, now buy it. “You have to invite people into the story, whether it's food, whether it's technology, whether it's architecture. What is the story that you're telling in your nonfiction?” In a wide-ranging interview, Allen talks to Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle about how to use God as a co-creator in any creative venture, the importance of the narrative arc, formulaic writing, the state of the publishing industry, and why knowing oneself is essential before beginning either a nonfiction or fiction book. USE GOD AS YOUR CO-CREATOR Author of two successful bestsellers—The Story of With: A Better Way to Live, Love, And Create, and Chaos Can't—Allen has helped literally hundreds of writers publish successful books. Allen believes too many creative people pursue a formula or what is in vogue, when instead they should be creating their own story—as a writer, painter, poet, whatever. “Most people don't know how to pursue their creativity actively with God. Instead, they try to pursue a formula. They want to know what works and just do more of that. So I decided to write a book through an allegory, mostly that invited people into how do you pursue what you love to do actively with God? He hears a lot of creatives say “I feel like it's all up to me”. Allen's response is that by co-creating with God “You never have to be alone again. You're doing something with an eternal spark. The fruit of that it's been a lot of transformed creatives out there that all of a sudden enjoy it more and are doing more breakthrough work.” Allen describes his approach as inviting God into a playground of ideas. In his own writing he would “Sense God saying in the allegory . . .right, your character goes into an impossible situation that you can't resolve at the end of the chapter. And then wait for me to tell you what to do. The writing became this almost like, a game of back and forth and tag, and the pressure was off me. “I felt like God was guiding me in the story and in the teaching into some things that would be beyond me. I got to be a part of it. I think that's the best kind of writing possible, when you're not just relying on your own wisdom.” HOW MANY WORDS A DAY SHOULD YOU WRITE? Allen is a big proponent of forgetting word count when you sit down to write. Instead, he encourages writers to simply focus on having something to say something worth breathing life into. In his view, if you write no words one day in search of that strong piece of writing, and 10 words the next day, a writer is better off compared to someone who produces 5000 words a day. GET TO KNOW YOURSELF - REALLY WELL With most successful authors, it doesn't start with their book, but instead who they are. “In the publishing world, if you don't know your own story, if you haven't lived an examined life, if you don't know why somebody would enjoy working with you, then ultimately, I think you do yourself a disservice,” he says. Allen passed up on many authors he knew could produce a New York Times best seller because they were, in his words, hard to work with, had a high ego, or were driven by such a need for validation that they would just drain his team. He says authors must “Know your effect on others, as a writer as a creator, because it's a relational business, whether you self-publish, or whether you're with a traditional publisher. You work with other people and so it starts with who you are. And the more you know your story, the more the story you write, it will have a power to it.” ABANDON FORMULAIC WRITING Allen recalls that as a publisher he learned that the most successful and appealing authors were those who did not write to a formula. Writers who wanted to write what would be hot were in fact limiting themselves, he explains. Instead, he was drawn to those who would say “I don't care if this is a genre that's hot or not right now, this is what I was born to write. This is what I'm passionate about. And this is what I want to offer you.” Those were the writers who most caught his eye. “We all know in this industry that trends come and go.The best thing you can do is write what you're passionate about; not write to spec not write to formula if you want to have heart within what you write.” In large part he blames the publishing industry for this state of affairs, saying it's gotten off track for two reasons. First, too many publishing hours are chasing authors with large social media followings to be able to say they can make a book around a following instead of what's a good book and how do we grow the audience? Next, the publishing industry has lost its ability to define their customers. At one time, it was the bookstore, not the reader. But along came Amazon and defined the customer as the reader, not the bookstore. They also happen to know a lot about that reader. So when bookstores started closing physical locations, publishing houses realized they had no information about their customers. The fruit of all this, concludes Allen, is: “A lot of forgettable books by smaller publishing teams who are overworked, understaffed, and have no marketing budget.” LINKS Twitter WithAllen.com SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts.
