Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we're jumping into the gritty, morally murky corner of the galaxy far, far away with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), the first of Disney's standalone Star Wars films and one that dares to tell a story where the Force doesn't offer easy answers—and not everyone gets out alive.Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One is set just before the events of A New Hope and follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of Imperial scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), who's coerced into building the Death Star. Recruited by the Rebel Alliance, Jyn finds herself at the heart of a desperate mission to steal the plans for the Empire's terrifying superweapon. What sets Rogue One apart is its tone—it's a war film through and through. There's mud, sacrifice, and a real sense of stakes. The ensemble cast includes Diego Luna as the morally grey rebel Cassian Andor, Donnie Yen as the Force-believing monk Chirrut Îmwe, Alan Tudyk voicing the reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO (a scene-stealer), and Ben Mendelsohn as the deeply petty but brilliantly acted villain Director Krennic. This isn't about Jedi or chosen ones. It's about regular people—fighters, spies, defectors, believers—laying down their lives for a cause they believe in, even if they won't live to see the outcome. That emotional weight gives the film a grounded, bittersweet tone that feels distinct within the Star Wars universe.Visually, Edwards brings a tactile realism to the film. The final battle on Scarif is one of the franchise's most spectacular sequences—land, sea, and space warfare colliding in chaos. And of course, there's that final hallway scene with Darth Vader, a terrifying, unforgettable burst of fan service done right. For those who've ever wondered what it really took to get the Death Star plans into Leia's hands, Rogue One answers with a powerful, self-contained story that expands the mythology while standing firmly on its own. It's bold, emotional, and a little darker than you might expect from a Star Wars film—which is exactly why we love it.This one's for the rebels.

It's hard to believe that 'Rogue One' premiered nearly a decade ago. At the time, it was fairly well received, considered to be a decent first step into the standalone Star Wars movies, if not a bit messy. As the years passed, we learned more about the production. Gareth Edwards, who retained sole directing credit, was assisted by Tony Gilroy to "fix" the project. Tony went so far as to call it a "corpse" when he came aboard for rewrites and reshoots. It was Tony's inclusion that brought us some of the movies most memorable moments, and ultimately led him to leading the charge on 'Andor', a prequel project that flew under the radar as hits like 'The Mandalorian' hogged the spotlight. With 'Andor' now complete, considered by many to be a masterpiece in storytelling, not just in Star Wars but on television in general, now is the most appropriate time to reexamine the movie that spawned the Cassian-centered prequel series with fresh eyes. 'Andor', which leads directly into the events of 'Rogue One' recontextualizes much of the film, creating a unique viewing experience that pays off a multitude of threads that are brilliantly laid over the two seasons of 'Andor'. It takes the movie, which was already pretty good, and makes it great. Now existing as part of a whole that weaves a cohesive narrative from the nascent moments of the Rebellion all the way through to the destruction of the Death Star in 1977 (the seed that begat ALL Star Wars, and what we appropriately align our Star Wars BBY calendars to). It all feels wholistic and considered when viewed from the broader perspective - an accomplishment that should set a shining example of what Star Wars can and should aspire to.

This Argentinian horror flick made the rounds in 2023, catching a lot of attention and exploding in popularity once it landed on Shudder. It's also a combination of grounded & crazy! The two get into it all!Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 20-minutes discussing the trailer for Jurassic World: Rebirth, Gareth Edwards' upcoming Summer blockbuster, and how it might be doing away with Trevorrow's... lackluster style and embrace being a horror-filled island adventure! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)When Melvin received the push-notification that a Patreon Supporter had submitted When Evil Lurks for February's Patreon Pick, he audibly reacted. It's a visceral film, and the two talk about that for a bit.Is it weird to like a movie that's so pointedly miserable?Kathryn, "This movie just evoked in me a lot of 'social sadness'.".The film isn't drawing attention to it, but virtually every character within the film exists in a state of marginalization. When Evil Lurks has conviction. It trusts what it's doing, and it trusts you'll understand it.It's not as vicious as Terrifier 2, but the violence here is pretty nuts."Evil loves children. And children love evil."Discussing those two crazy shocking scenes in the film. You know the ones. When a system fails, the marginalized are the first to suffer.Discussing the ending and how it left us.Recommendations:Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear by Jinger Vuolo (2024) (Book)Terrified (2017) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Skreeonk! A Godzilla Movie Marathon

Oh lawd he comin! America's second crack at Godzilla is a chonky thicc absolute unit, and he's in a surprisingly artful and bleak disaster film from director Gareth Edwards. We talk about the on-the-ground approach to visuals, the military's involvement in the writing process (and some weak themes and characterization as a result), how the MUTOs just want to kiss and did nothing wrong, why the Monsterverse stands out among other cinematic universes, and more. Firstly, actor Colman Domingo verified that he did have conversations with Marvel executives, though only after rumors of him playing Kang the Conqueror were circulating. Jurassic World Rebirth | Trailer REACTION

MOVIE Morning

The dinosaurs are back! The first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth - the seventh installment of the Jurassic franchise - has finally hit theaters .This movie had a FAST road to production, with Jurassic World Dominion only coming out three years ago and this movie only being announced about 18 months ago. For context, the time gap between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion was FOUR years. The first Jurassic Park is a top 15 movie of all-time for me... but this franchise has basically now disappointed me five straight times. I don't think Lost World is horrible and I have some fun with the first Jurassic World but the pairing of David Koepp and Gareth Edwards has always given me some hope for this entry. I've liked all of Edwards' movies but haven't quite loved ay of them, but he's certainly the kind of director who can inject some worthy visuals back into this franchise and bring the thrills. The question has been: are the characters and story going to live up to the visuals though? Those areas have been my issue with all of his films so far, but with Koepp on board, I've had some hope. Also, because this movie shot large chunks in Thailand, I'm immediately going to be pumped to see it. Does the trailer give the impression that this is going to be the best movie in the franchise since the original? Find out in this initial reaction!
