Both teachers were also recognized for their teaching practice by the Arizona Educational Foundation. Emmett is the 2025 AEF Teacher of the Year, while Ryan is a 2025 AEF Ambassador for Excellence. These relationships help us really see our students and our peers in meaningful ways. Ryan shares about the value of protected time for collegial support and mentoring and the professional growth that results. He asks us to think about a mentor relationship as an opportunity for open dialogue and not about spending time focusing on deficits. Episode 128. I've never been more convinced of the power of creativity in creating amazing things in the world, in our bodies, and in our businesses. Today's episode is a solo episode where I dive into my thoughts on this based on my conversation last episode with Marlys Woods, LMFT. Check out that conversation here. Without further ado, let's dive in! What to Expect in this Episode I cover the following: How we, and I, have de-valued music and the arts as a form of healing in the past Why I think it's essential now more than ever that we re-connect with it as we explore innovative approaches to the many problems of the world Collective healing with music and missed opportunities with a life devoid of arts and music How connecting with creativity through music and dance has been incredibly healing to me in a very short time My reflections on the healing that occurred in simply discussing my emotional experience with a song with Marlys (Including discussion about the song I talked to Marlys about which can be found here) (includes an example of a protector part of me, and an exiled one who has held a burden) Using music and dance and other creative expression to connect with pre-verbal parts The importance of getting the emotion out of you, versus isolating in it The impact of creativity in creating sustainable businesses that work around your life (with Marlys Woods and Megan Gunnell as really fascinating examples of this) How you can be sure to hear if Marlys and I do a collaborative experiential event for therapists to experience the healing power of music (we are already brainstorming on this) And so much more! Julia King Pool joined us last season to talk about the psychology behind the concept of burning in rather than burning out. In this episode, she continues that conversation by sharing specific strategies for approaching some difficult scenarios you might have encountered. Hosts Juliana and Marlys ask Julia several questions about stressful scenarios educators often find themselves in. These include difficult conversations with a student's parent, balancing creativity and autonomy with a scripted curriculum, and not feeling supported at school. Julia provides research-backed steps for these situations and also talks through strategies to help educators' wellbeing all around. She references Sabine Sonnentag's work around recovering from the workday in talking about how educators can work toward balance. Sonnentag outlines four aspects to help recover from a workday, including psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery experiences, and control. Julia talks with Juliana and Marlys about the variety of ways those might look for an individual. This episode also references this RAND research report and also Yuval Noah Harari, author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. Wherein Jon and Judy invite several friends, absent Marlys, to join us in tasting four whiskies (and a fifth for extra credit) with an abundance of chaos, some expletives, glass clinking, and pretzels, occasionally returning to the subject at hand but always having a good time at the beach in Washington State. It may help if you know a bit about libraries, and it will definitely help if you are drinking while you listen ;) It's a long one, so buckle up! We hope that you will enjoy it. We certainly had fun recording it.

Positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. That relationship dynamic is not at all uncommon, but maybe it's one you're looking to pivot from, or avoid entirely as you raise your daughter. On this episode of This Grit and Grace Life, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender welcome back Marlys Johnson Lawry, a writer for Grit and Grace Life and mom of an adult daughter. June 12, 1962. Worthington, Minnesota. 20-year old Marlys Gross gives birth to a baby daughter named Mary Agnes, but is told by the hospital staff that the child died shortly after she was born. Mary Agnes is given a funeral and buried in a grave, but months later, Marlys is mailed a photograph of an unidentified family holding a baby whom she believes is her daughter. Over the next three decades, Marlys would discover a number of suspicious discrepancies to make her believe that Mary Agnes is still alive, so she petitions to have her gravesite exhumed in 1996. While skeletal remains of a deceased child are found, DNA testing reveals that they do not belong to Mary Agnes. Did the hospital orchestrate a cover-up in order to perform a black-market adoption and sell Mary Agnes to another family? If so, then whose remains were buried in Mary Agnes' grave? This week's episode of “The Trail Path Went Chilly” explores a very bizarre and complicated mystery about the disappearance of a newborn infant.Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Mary_Agnes_Grosshttps://www.newspapers.com/image/240234019/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/454862991/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/240973566/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/240282173/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/336511442/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22https://www.newspapers.com/image/336776572/?terms=%22Mary%2BAgnes%2BGross%22

The word "image" can mean different things to people. When thinking about improving your trade show image, this can be viewed from the organizer level, the exhibitor level, and the attendee level. Marlys helps us understand the importance of focusing on how to improve our image from each of these perspectives. Who are the best people to work your booth, for example? "Sometimes some of the best people to be in the booth are the customer service representatives, because they're the ones who field all the questions." We can all make improvements, and Marlys literally wrote the book on the topic. As always, we'd love to hear your perspective on our conversation! When Marlys Vaughan picked up the phone to talk to Susan Finch about volunteering to help with the Binky Patrol website, she had no idea it would lead to lifelong friends, a way she can craft for others, and daily joy from helping the children and teens in Salem, Massachusetts. This episode is the story of her one-woman chapter that grew to three people and a school and continues to grow. Learn from Marlys' gentle story that you can start with a small effort and add to it as you go along the path. Marlys says one of the greatest and unexpected gifts is the friendships she has in Binky Patrol with people who have like-hearts. Hmmm, Lisa Cintron and Miriam talked about that too. I think they're on to something!

For years these murders shocked the people of Minnesota. People were scared and they wanted swift justice. But unfortunately, an arrest wasn't made soon enough, and a serial killer was allowed to roam.
Marlys Wohlenhaus was brutally murdered two weeks before her high school graduation. Although her family will go to great lengths to solve her murder it would take 19 years for justice to be had, however, unearthing Marlys' murderer would reveal an evil greater than the police could have ever dreamed of. When you hear about using data in your teaching practice, you may think about test scores, but Shane Safir and Dr. Jamila Dugan are expanding our idea about data and how we can use it to support our students and our teaching. Safir and Dugan are the co-authors of Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation and will be speaking at this summer's Teacher Leadership Institute. In this episode of 3Ps in a Pod, they talk with co-hosts Paula, Marlys, and Kathleen about what street-level data is and how it is different than “satellite data” or “map data.” Safir explains how people can collect street data through deep listening and how that deep listening can bring systemic change to schools and districts. Dugan explores how that deep listening and street data can bring voice to the marginalized and the vulnerability required to get to that transformative level. Safir and Dugan also reflect on how difficult teaching has been the past few years and share encouragement for those working to continue on and deepen their practice. Advance your teacher leadership and your understanding of street data at the 17th Annual Teacher Leadership Institute: New Possibilities Through Connections and Experiences from June 13-15 in Tucson. Welcome a new school principal and a new co-host of 3Ps in a Pod to today's episode! New co-host Paula joins Marlys to talk with first-year principal Biju Padmanabhan about his transition from the classroom to leading a school community and what he's learned through the past year. Padmanabhan is the principal of Gililland Middle School in Tempe Elementary School District and has worked to uplift the others around him through his leadership style. He shares with Paula and Marlys about what it means to center shared leadership and how he approaches leadership from a learner's mindset. He also talks about the experience in his very first days of teaching that caused him to consider becoming a school leader. Padmanabhan reflects on the power of human relationships and community to strengthen a school and the great things going on at Gililland Middle School that “satellite data” doesn't always show. Trevor MacKenzie is back on 3Ps on a Pod to talk with hosts Kathleen and Marlys about inquiry-based learning and what that truly looks like in the classroom. MacKenzie is a teacher, author, and speaker focused on the power of inquiry in learning. He will also be leading this summer's 2nd Annual ATA Beginning Teacher Institute. MacKenzie talks with Kathleen and Marlys about what inquiry-based learning is and how it looks different than classes that aren't inquiry-based. He speaks to the values that are a part of inquiry, including building a culture of relationships based in “psychological safety and vulnerability and openness.” He also shares how inquiry is like the trunk of a tree with branches that include project-based learning, problem-based learning, and some other frameworks and describes the sketchnote ‘The Tree of Inquiry,' which demonstrates those relationships. While some teachers may be intimidated to move into inquiry-based learning, MacKenzie explains that they may be thinking of ‘free inquiry,” which is the “deep end” of the inquiry pool. He references the sketchnote ‘Types of Student Inquiry' that shows the other levels of inquiry-based learning students and teachers can explore. This summer, MacKenzie will guide new teachers in how to integrate more inquiry into their teaching. If you're a teacher who will be in your first three years of teaching this fall, join MacKenzie and other new teachers June 22 through 24 for the 2nd Annual ATA Beginning Teacher Institute. Google's former Education Evangelist Jaime Casap and 2021 National Teacher of the Year Juliana Urtubey will also be leading sessions. Learn more and register at azk12.org/BTI22. Music is the gateway to the soul. It can help us to find words for emotions that we didn't even know that we had. It can unlock and solidify memories. Music has been with humanity across time and cultures for all of recorded history and, it is just as powerful now as it was then. As a biracial and bireligious child, Marlys struggled to find her place. She felt stretched between two worlds. On the surface she appeared happy-go-lucky and put together, but inside she was lonely and afraid. Music helped her to find the words for her internal experience and to start to find her voice as a performer and a therapist. She now shares this gift with her clients. Tune in to this episode of From the Ashes as we hear how Marlys found her rhythm and got in tune.
Today we talk with Marlys Rodgers, who has been in cyber for over 20 years. She currently is CISO for CSAA Insurance Group and is running security for the company as well as running governance risk and compliance for technology. She shares that it feels like she is constantly balancing assessing with preventing. Allan brings up breach and attack simulation (BAS), and when it is most appropriate to implement in the context of the maturity of a security program. Marlys feels BAS is most effective when some, or most, of the intended controls are in place so you can focus on areas you need to strengthen. For her company, she was glad they did it earlier rather than later. They had a pretty good lead time to get systems to integrate. The way you use BAS, especially along with threat intelligence, is really important. If you don't have a purple team, or a red and blue team how does one start or how do you reorganize? Hear how Marlys did just that. Tag-teaming works best! How has BAS helped in conversations with the audit team as well as the GRC team? More data gets shared with Audit and they become strong allies. Everyone is happy when fed real-world, real-time information. BAS is truly changing mindsets, and will ultimately alter prioritization and enhancing and inter-team communications as well. To wrap up the show, Marlys shares what about her job keeps her getting up in the morning and what she is looking forward to in cyber. Key Takeaways 0:21 Welcome Marlys 1:13 Short comical discussion on how one should pronounce BAS 1:29 Marlys shares her background and day job 3:35 When BAS comes into the picture 5:00 The trick 6:05 Allan asks Marlys how she stays up with it 8:52 Marlys explains why more time should be spent on extending capabilities 9:38 Suggestions are shared to roll out BAS 12:21 Importance of human elements 13:45 If you don't have teams, what happens? 16:18 How BAS affects conversations with teams 20:00 Importance of transparency 21:27 Changing people, process and technology with BAS 25:00 Marlys shares the reason she is motivated to stay in cyber 26:01 Marlys shares when she is looking forward to in cyber Links: Learn more about Marlys on LinkedIn Follow Allan Alford on LinkedIn and Twitter Learn more about Hacker Valley Studio and The Cyber Ranch Podcast Sponsored by our good friends at AttackIQ
This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” explores a very bizarre and complicated mystery about the disappearance of a newborn infant.
