Folk tales have been important to us for centuries, but in the grand span of their existence we only started writing them down relatively recently. In this episode of the Folklore Podcast, we are joined by Scottish storyteller Allison Galbraith, who is one of those who not only tells in person, but also commits stories to print.Amongst these is the tale Zombie Cow, which she performs as part of this episode and which we couldn't resist using as an episode title. This episode is a rich investigation into the art of storytelling, the written word and much more.Visit Allison's website at www.voiceandstory.comSupport the Folklore Podcast on Patreon at www.patreon.com/thefolklorepodcast
1000 Better Stories - A Scottish Communities Climate Action Network Podcast
In today's episode Kaska Hempel, SCCAN Story Weaver, speaks to Alette Willis, one of the researchers involved in the Shifting The Narrative project funded by the British Academy, and carried out by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, with SCCAN as a partner. The project investigated how traditional storytelling can help communities achieve place-based climate action. Alette shares her wider experience around using narrative work to drive change in communities along with the key findings from this recent project, ahead of the publication of the official report in October. In this episode, I speak with my friend and colleague Allison Galbraith. Allison and I co-wrote Dancing with Trees: Eco-Tales of the British Isles and she has recently launched her book Lanarkshire Folktales. Allison is a storyteller, student of folklore, voice artist and author. She has backgrounds as an actor and as a teacher of pupils with additional support needs. She joined me from her cottage just outside of Lanark in Scotland to talk about how storytelling can help make STEM education more accessible and equitable. Our conversation took us from her work on storytelling and climate change with local farmers through to a recent project at Culzean Castle where she worked with scientists to create original stories about the lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere. The story Allison shared was 'The Fairies of Merlin's Crag' from her recent book, Lanarkshire Folk Tales (History Press, 2021), which you can find here: https://smarturl.it/LanarkshireFT More information on Allison Galbraith can be found here: www.voiceandstory.com Culzean Castle: Dolphin House Outdoor Education Centre: https://www.thedolphinhouse.co.uk Dumfries House: STEM Education: https://dumfries-house.org.uk/education/morphy-richards-engineering-education-centre GROWL, Glasgow Region Outdoor & Woodland Learning | Outdoor and Woodland Learning (owlscotland.org): https://www.owlscotland.org/local-groups/glasgow_fei The Children's Wood and North Kelvin Meadow - The Childrens Wood: https://www.thechildrenswood.co.uk/ photo credit: Finlay Stevenson
Duncan Williamson says he heard this story from the brother of a crofter, Neil McCallum, in Argyll, where they worked on dry-stane dykes together, when Duncan was young. Archie's Besom is the tale of a man who met a traveller that told him how make a besom. Archie sold his besom to Big Mags, a witch. Who taught some nasty witches a lesson they would never forget.
With the start of the holidays we bring you creative inspiration for the summer - full of planet friendly tales for the whole family. The episode was recorded at the Storytelling in the Garden which took place last Saturday at our Tayport Community Garden. It was one of the events we are putting on this year as a part of Climate Action Fife, Climate Friendly Gardens series to help everyone in Fife get involved in climate action. Today, I talk to the storyetller we met on the day, Owen Pilgrim, about his passion for sharing tales and myths, and how they can better connect us to each other, ourselves and to the places we live in. We also touch on how we can use them to draw others into taking action on climate change. We get to hear the story of the village of pots which Owen shared with us during the event - and some ideas on how you can share your very own story of care for the planet with others.
