Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREIn this episode of Maximum Lawyer, the host delivers a compelling message inspired by a memorable piece of advice from his trainer: "release the dog." This vivid metaphor encapsulates the idea of tapping into an intensely focused, disciplined, and relentless version of yourself, especially during those crucial "build seasons" in your business. Rather than holding back or pacing yourself too early, the host encourages lawyers to channel their energy and determination, pushing past comfort zones to achieve meaningful progress. He emphasizes that true growth often requires a period of intense commitment, where you set aside the pursuit of perfect work-life balance and instead pour your efforts into building robust systems and leverage within your firm. The episode takes on added urgency in light of the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, which are fundamentally reshaping the legal landscape. The host warns that those who hesitate or cling to old ways of working risk being left behind as technology accelerates change. Now, more than ever, is the time to act decisively and position your practice for long-term success. By embracing this "release the dog" mentality, lawyers can harness the momentum of innovation and set themselves apart in a competitive market.Ultimately, the episode concludes with a bold challenge to its listeners: commit to going all in for the next six to twelve months. Use this time to build something extraordinary, whether it's streamlining your operations, adopting new technologies, or scaling your team. The host's message is clear: extraordinary results require extraordinary effort, and the window of opportunity is now.Highlights1:08 Lawyers, Comfort Zones, and Risk Aversion 2:24 Intensity vs. Burnout: The Importance of Seasons 5:56 Settling for Average and the Cost of Comfort 07:16 MaxLawCon 2026 Announcement 9:24 AI, Imagination, and the New Era of Building 10:30 Consequences of Not Releasing the Dog 12:42 The Lie of Constant Work-Life Balance 13:44 Excuses and Decisions: Time, Balance, and Honesty 15:54 The Challenge: Go All-In for Six to Twelve Months 16:56 Bringing Family Along and Making the Decision 18:01 Easing Into Intensity and Taking Action Resources:Join the Guild MembershipSubscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube ChannelFollow us on InstagramJoin the Facebook GroupFollow the Facebook PageFollow us on LinkedIn Resources:Join the Guild MembershipSubscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube ChannelFollow us on InstagramJoin the Facebook GroupFollow the Facebook PageFollow us on LinkedIn
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
When one concludes the twelve-month mourning period following a parent's passing, an event called an "Arayat" is customarily held. The word "Arayat" means "reading," and the event is so named because portions of Tehillim and of certain Kabbalistic works are read. Food is normally served as the event. Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that if a person wishes to continue reciting Kaddish even after the twelve-month mourning period, he may do so, and this will bring benefit to the deceased's soul. Although the standard punishment in Gehinam lasts for only twelve months, Rav Haim Vital (1543-1620) writes that some wicked people are not even ready to be brought to Gehinam immediately after their death, and thus their period of suffering in Gehinam – which could last up to twelve months – might begin only some time after death. Therefore, there is benefit to the Kaddish recitation even beyond the twelve-month mourning period. In fact, the Hesed La'alafim (Rav Eliezer Papo, 1785-1828) instructed his sone to recite Kaddish after his passing at least once a day for the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, this is not the commonly accepted practice. Generally speaking, people recite Kaddish for their parents after the first twelve months only following a Torah class or Tehillim reading, but not during the prayer service. Sometimes, a Rabbi might advise a congregant to continue reciting Kaddish after the first year of mourning in order to encourage the congregant to continue attending the prayers. Summary: Although there is benefit to reciting Kaddish for a deceased parent even after the twelve-month mourning period, it is customary not to, except after a Torah class or Tehillim reading.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kim Sorrelle, author of the book Love Is. Kim Sorrelle is a writer, speaker, entrepreneur, and director of a humanitarian organization. She is the author of two books, "Cry Until You Laugh" which details her journey through cancer, and "Love Is" which chronicles her year-long experiment to discover the true meaning of love. Kim is passionate about people and loves to travel to new places and meet new faces. She has five children and eleven grandchildren whom she adores and believes will one day make a positive impact on the world. Kim is committed to living a life of love and is determined to make a difference in the lives of those around her. In my book review, I stated Love Is is a beautiful memoir exploring the concept of Christ-like love. She uses 1 Corinthians 13 as a guide and spends an entire year trying to love as Jesus would love. What a gift she's given all who read her words - a way to think about loving others that goes beyond words and hits squarely on actions. And not just any actions, but actions that truly depict love for another. Love is patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud, does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered, does not keep a record of wrongs, does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth, always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres - it never fails. Kim learned that such love isn't easy to live - even when your focus is on just one phrase. I loved how honest she was - sometimes that she believed it would be easy and was wrong, and often that she knew it would be hard and it was harder than she imagined. Without a doubt, this book has me thinking - and re-thinking - about love, how I show it to others, and how I can make changes to live more fully the love described in 1 Corinthians 13. Pat King in conversation with Jim Butcher
Harry Dresden has survived apocalypses. But surviving after one? That's another story entirely. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim reviews The Dresden Files Book 18, Twelve Months by Jim Butcher — a novel that trades nonstop spectacle for something far more powerful: grief, healing, responsibility, and growth.Set in the year following the devastating Battle of Chicago, Twelve Months follows Harry Dresden as he struggles to process trauma, loss, guilt, and the weight of everything he's survived. This is a quieter Dresden book in some ways — but also one that meaningfully advances the overarching story, deepens relationships, and delivers a strong, satisfying climax. In this spoiler-lite review, Jim discusses:• Why Twelve Months may be some of Jim Butcher's best writing• How realistically the book handles grief, loss, and recovery• The evolving (and complicated) relationship between Harry Dresden and Lara Raith• Major story progression for the series as a whole• Why Harry Dresden remains one of fantasy's great long-form protagonists• Who will love this book, and who might struggle with its pacing or approachIf you're a longtime Dresden fan, this is an essential discussion. And if you've been waiting to see whether Twelve Months was worth the long wait since Battle Ground — this review is for you.

In his second appearance on The Great Indoors, Marcus Collins, cultural strategist and best-selling author, returns to pick up where we left off in Season Nine. Over the past twelve months, culture, technology, and commerce have moved fast, but not always forward. This conversation revisits the ideas that defined our last discussion and stress tests them against a year marked by generative AI acceleration, shifting cultural power, brand anxiety, and renewed questions around meaning, identity, and trust. Together, we explore what these developments mean for Marcus's work today, and for anyone tasked with building relevance, resonance, and responsibility in an increasingly automated world. A grounded, incisive dialogue on culture not as a trend to chase, but as a force to understand, especially when the ground keeps moving.

In Episode 92 of The Steak Lad Experience and for the second time, I spoke with my friend Sean Bell. Myself and Sean initially connected in December 2024 and when I saw he was moving to the Gold Coast, I knew a conversation needed to happen!!! In the words of Sean, 2025 broke him. He was dealing with a severe injury after his world record run around Australia, broke up with his partner, had a lung collapse and whilst he was in hospital his father passed away. During the podcast we dove into the impact this had on him, how he dealt with/overcame the associated challenges, why you should never expect life to go the way you expected, his plans for 2026 and much much more. I love chatting with Sean and as he revealed towards the end of the podcast he is working on a massive project, so I am looking forward to round 3 in due course!!! Can we talk about Trump's culture war, Putin's war on inclusivity, and just about everyone's unwillingness to pay teachers fair wages—and giggle throughout? You better believe it. Nina Lamparski is back in the hosting chair, and strap in, listeners, because this week's show is a *ride.* Our guest this week is the delightful and incisive political analyst Paweł Zerka of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Paweł returns to the podcast to tell us why Europe is living in a Truman-Show-style universe directed by Donald Trump and his international team. We pick Paweł's terrific brain about what our leaders can do to build upon the growing pro-European sentiment (really!) and engage with the US as its peer, not its lackey. Plus: Nina raises a glass of crémant to Luxembourgish teachers, who had what seems to us like a very swanky Good Week. And Dominic awards Bad Week to Eurovision, which seems to be crumbling whilst Russia's Intervision is back and creepier than ever. Send us a textEpisode 173Takeji Asano, born in 1900 in Kyoto, Japan, was a masterful woodblock print artist whose works continue to captivate art enthusiasts worldwide. His journey into the world of art began at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts, from which he graduated in 1919. Eager to refine his skills, he furthered his studies at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, completing his education in 1923. During this period, Asano was mentored by Tsuchida Bakusen, a distinguished artist and printmaker, who profoundly influenced his artistic development. In 1929, Asano co-founded the Kyoto Creative Print Society (Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai), marking his commitment to the sōsaku-hanga movement. This movement emphasized the artist's direct involvement in every stage of printmaking—designing, carving, and printing—allowing for greater personal expression. Asano's dedication to this philosophy set him apart from many of his contemporaries. The 1930s saw Asano contributing to the "Creative Prints of Twelve Months in New Kyoto" (Sosaku-hanga shin Kyoto junikagetsu), a series that celebrated the city's evolving landscape. Collaborating with fellow artists Benji Asada and Tomikichiro Tokuriki, Asano's prints from this series showcased his keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of Kyoto's transformation. As the 1950s approached, Asano began designing landscape prints for the publisher Unsodo. These works, characterized by their serene beauty and meticulous craftsmanship, remain highly sought after by collectors. Original Unsodo prints bear the Japanese date in the margin, distinguishing them from modern reprints. Throughout his career, Asano exhibited a remarkable versatility. While he initially embraced the sōsaku-hanga approach, handling all aspects of print production himself, he later collaborated with carvers, printers, and publishers in the shin-hanga tradition. This adaptability not only broadened his artistic repertoire but also enriched the Japanese printmaking landscape. Asano's legacy is a testament to his unwavering passion and dedication to his craft. His prints, often depicting tranquil landscapes and traditional scenes, offer a window into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Today, his works are celebrated for their artistic merit and historical significance, solidifying Takeji Asano's place as a luminary in the world of Japanese woodblock printing.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com
You Will Be Peter with Jerry Lathan, Steve Manchester The extraordinary story of a young fisherman who became the Founding Father of Christianity, the most influential and enduring institution in history. He's one of the most well-known figures in cultures around the world, etched into stained glass, painted in frescoes, even caricatured as standing at the gates of heaven with a long white beard and keys in hand. But long before he was portrayed as a venerated and untouchable figure, Peter was simply known as Simon, a twenty-something fisherman in a far-flung Jewish province controlled by the Roman Empire. Loyal and faithful, impetuous and passionate, Simon's quiet life is upended by the arrival of a man called Jesus of Nazareth, rumored to be the long-awaited Messiah who would rescue the Jewish people from oppression. When Simon meets Jesus, the mysterious man tells him, “You will be Peter,” a prophetic statement that would slowly transform Simon's life. Eager to be free of the Romans, Simon joins Jesus in hopes that he can guard this leader who will, undoubtedly, build an army to challenge Rome. But as Simon waits for the army to form, he watches Jesus show a compassion for others Simon has never seen before. The miracles Jesus performs—healing the sick, feeding crowds of thousands—show not a display of military might, but of service and love. Real, relatable and impeccably researched, You Will Be Peter draws on the four Gospel accounts to weave Simon Peter's story into one seamless tapestry. Readers get a front-row seat to Simon's three-year walk with Jesus, as Simon watches the Son of Man feed the hungry, raise the dead, upend the status quo and challenge the elite during one of world history's most pivotal seasons. In perhaps one of the greatest miracles, we can see ourselves in Simon, this ordinary man Jesus chose to accompany Him. Simon wasn't well-educated, but he was faithful and headstrong. Though he could rush to judgment and use a foul word from time to time, he was the kind of friend who loved fiercely and was doggedly loyal—until he wasn't. Although he failed, Simon wasn't cast away from Jesus' mission. In fact, his failures and subsequent redemption made him a more empathetic and capable rock upon whom the Church was built. With storytelling artistry that transports readers to the first-century world, with the sights, sounds, and smells of that time, You Will Be Peter shares an age-old story told from a new set of eyes: it's possible for one ordinary person, however unlikely, to change the world forever. https://www.youwillbepeter.com/ Jerry Lathan brings a wealth of knowledge in telling the remarkable story of Simon Peter. Combining his lifelong interest of history with a decade of research, Jerry has unearthed missing details on the evolution of Simon—the brash fisherman who became Peter. Over forty-plus years, Jerry's national award-winning construction company has preserved and restored historic churches and other structures and national monuments. His deep interest in the lives of historic characters is central to his calling to author You Will Be Peter. From Jerry's time as co-owner of Big Easy Studios in New Orleans where more than twelve major movies were filmed, he understands the incredible power of a good story. In this book, the culmination of his life's work, Jerry shares the real and relatable story of Simon Peter, the very flawed man whom Jesus chose to build His church. youwillbepeter@gmail.com 251.443.7663 (Monday-Friday) Co-Author Steven Manchester is the author of the soul-awakening novel The Menu as well as the 1980s nostalgia-series Bread Bags & Bullies and Lawn Darts & Lemonade. Bio By Sharon Mbabazi I am 37 years old and live in West Michigan, USA, with my wonderful husband and three beautiful children. They keep us very busy, and we are always on the go. I also work full-time as a data team leader for a company that provides strategic supply chain solutions to hospitals, banks, and other businesses in the surrounding areas. I started my intermittent fasting journey at the end of June 2023 to lose 30 lbs/13.6 kgs. I had been steadily gaining weight since having our 3rd child in 2018 and was ready to take some steps to reverse the upward trend. I had tried counting calories and various exercise routines, and even though I would lose a little weight, it wasn't sustainable. I would always end up gaining back more than what I started with. I discovered IF when our wedding photographer, Tonya Kortekaas (featured in episode 161), shared her incredible story through social media. I contacted Tonya, who gave me excellent guidance on getting started. She recommended great resources, including The Fasting Highway book, podcast, and Facebook group. Yes, I had to put in the effort and hard work to start my journey, but her advice and those resources have genuinely played a key role in my success. I gradually worked my way from a 16:8 window to 19:5 over about one month and have been steadily losing weight for the last year. I made some mistakes in the beginning (I was not clean fasting for the first week or so) but quickly learned and made adjustments along the way. I am currently down 39 lbs/17.7 kg and will soon be carefully transitioning into maintenance. I am so thankful for everyone who shared their story so I could navigate my IF journey. I share my story, hoping it will do the same and inspire someone else. Our Patreon Supporters Community Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
During the twelve months after a parent's death, Heaven forbid, or within thirty days of another family member's death, a person is forbidden from attending festive events. The question arises, however, as to whether one may attend during this period events that are a Misva, such as a Berit Mila, Pidyon Ha'ben, Hanukat Ha'bayit or Bar Misva. Hacham Ovadia Yosef (listen to audio recording for precise citation) rules that strictly speaking, it is permissible for a person during Abelut (mourning) to attend a Pidyon Ha'ben or Berit Mila celebration, provided that no music is played. One may even sit and eat at the festive meal. Hacham Ovadia applies this ruling also to a Siyum celebration and a Bar Misva celebration, though, as mentioned, a mourner's participation is allowed only if music is not played at the affair. However, he adds, a person observing Abelut may not attend a Sheba Berachot celebration, even if music is not played. Although this is the law according to the strict Halacha, Hacham Ovadia notes that many people follow the custom to forbid attendance at such celebrations during Abelut, even if no music is played. Instead, they attend the ceremony of the Pidyon Ha'ben, for example, or the circumcision, and perhaps take some food with them, but they do not sit down and eat with the other guests. This seems to be the practice in our community. It should be noted that even according to this custom, it is permissible for a person observing Abelut to attend a Hanukat Ha'bayit held on the occasion of moving into a new home. This event involves merely the reading of Pesukim, and is not especially festive, and there is thus no reason for a person not to attend such a function during Abelut. Hacham Ovadia also notes in this context that a person observing Abelut may be called to the Torah for one of the special Aliyot – Hatan Torah or Hatan Bereshit – on Simhat Torah. Summary: Strictly speaking, one is allowed during the thirty days of mourning after a family member's death, or the twelve month after a parent's death, to attend a Misva celebration such as a Pidyon Ha'ben or Berit Mila, provided that no music is played. Practically, however, the accepted practice in our community is to allow mourners to attend only the ceremony itself, but not to participate in the festive meal. Even according to this custom, one may attend a Hanukah Ha'bayit, and be called for Hatan Torah or Hatan Bereshit on Simhat Torah.
By Chrissy Carter I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager; after school, when I started working, I started dieting. I lost weight and got pregnant with my first; I only put on 2kgs my whole pregnancy, and I was lighter after I had her. I spent my 20s either pregnant or breastfeeding. After four children, I thought I was done, so I returned to the gym and lost weight, eating six small meals daily. I then stopped working at the gym, stopped working out, and then got pregnant again. After I had my last daughter, I struggled again to lose the weight I would lose then gain. Doing all the things I knew. Then, my marriage ended abruptly, and my weight piled on. When I met my now husband, I was at my heaviest, 120kgs, despite my age and weight being against me. At 44, I became pregnant with our son. I lost 10kgs when I was pregnant with him. Towards the end of 2019, I started Keto and, over six months, lost 30kgs. Then, due to lots of stress and not having time to look after me, I put it all back on. Three months before my 50th birthday I decided to start fasting again, I eat whole foods in my eating window. I wanted to lose 10kgs before my birthday, but I lost 20. Over the next six months, I lost another 15 kgs and have kept that off within 3kg on either side. I have lowered my BP and dropped from a size 20 to a size 12. I am blessed to walk along the beach at least 12km daily, sometimes double that. I am so grateful to Graeme Currie and the Fasting Highway family, who keep me on track.
