Mary Margaret Oliver joins the podcast to discuss President-elect Donald Trump's choices for roles in cabinet and high-ranking administration positions. In the aftermath of former U.S. Rep. Progressive members are growing frustrated with Democratic leadership's constant moves to suppress good, progressive bills in favor of bills helping the corporate donor base. 8:51-39:30: Rep. Emily Dievendorf Interview Democratic State Rep. Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing) joins the show this week. The Representative introduced progressive, common sense bills on affordable housing, a homeless bill of rights, and helping families keep their land and homes. However, those bills can't get a vote on the House floor in the lame duck so far because they are either being pushed aside for other bills, or because of political games. Rep. Dievendorf also shares her frustrations on how "centrist" Democrats held-up many good, progressive bills designed to help Michiganders, and rather concentrated on corporate interests instead. 39:31-45:00: Last Call on Disgusting Nancy Mace Pat's "Last Call" covers how South Carolina MAGA Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace introduced a resolution this week that would bar transgender women from using women's bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol. This disgusting move by Mace is being done because a transgender Democratic Congresswoman will soon be in Congress. However, Democrats are also to blame since their silence on trans-rights issues this election year allowed Republicans to bully trans-Americans. And now, these MAGA Republicans feel even more emboldened to attack another group of marginalized Americans. 44:53-47:18: Ending Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com Left of Lansing is now on YouTube as well! leftoflansing.com

Here's Episode 94 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! 00:00-14:36: Trump Shooting/MAGA Violence/Neil Friske Pat opens the show talking about the assassination attempt on former President Trump, and how MAGA Republicans (with the help from corporate media) are trying to blame the Left for the shooting. It's an absurd attack considering how MAGA extremists have been using violent and threatening rhetoric for years. And in many cases, have engaged in political violence in Michigan, and across the nation. 15:24-40:51: Democratic State House Candidate Jodi Decker Pat talks with Democratic Candidate Jodi Decker of the 107th House District, which is currently being represented by MAGA extremist Neil Friske. He was recently arrested for allegedly getting into an altercation with an adult entertainer, and a gun may have been involved as well. Well, Jodi doesn't want to bring that kind of shame to her district. Instead, she wants to be an advocate for families, and to give families a voice. She also wants to focus on public transportation, housing, and foster care reform. Jodi simply wants to give a voice to those who feel like their voices are rarely heard. 41:15-46:34: Last Call on Sean O'Brien's Misguided RNC Speech In this week's "Last Call," Pat takes Teamsters President Sean O'Brien to task for his speech at the Republican National Convention. It baffles Pat since it's been the Biden-Harris administration, and Michigan Democrats, who've passed several policies designed to help union workers, including axing Right To Work For Less in Michigan. 46:59-48:29: Conclusion Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com Left of Lansing is now on YouTube as well! leftoflansing.com
Until 1948, around 800,000 Jews lived as an organic and inseparable part of the Arab Middle East and North Africa. But political shifts in the mid-20th century upended this reality. The violent creation of the State of Israel, and the rise of an increasingly exclusivist Arab nationalism, fueled anti-Jewish hostility that led to the exodus of all but a few thousand Jews from the region. The rich Arab-Jewish life that had characterized prior centuries was lost, and the vast majority of Arab Jews ended up in Israel, becoming active participants in the country's regime of domination over Palestinians. But neither Mizrahi Jews' enthusiastic embrace of Zionism nor the collapse of Jewish life in the broader Middle East were historical inevitabilities—and these processes did not go unchallenged. Instead, Arab-Jewish thinkers throughout the 20th century drew on their own experiences to offer alternatives to Zionism as well as other kinds of ethnonationalism. In June, Jewish Currents fellow Jonathan Shamir attended a first-of-its-kind retreat for Arab Jews organized by activist Hadar Cohen and historian Avi Shlaim, where contemporary thinkers came together to figure out how to build on these past efforts. In the latest episode of On the Nose, Shamir speaks with three scholars from the retreat—Hana Morgenstern, who studies Middle Eastern literature; Yaël Mizrahi-Arnaud, a co-founder of the diaspora anti-Zionist group Shoresh; and Moshe Behar, a senior lecturer in Israel/Palestine studies and co-founder of the Mizrahi Civic Collective—about the history of Arab-Jewish political thought and organizing, and its possibilities and limits for our time. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Texts Mentioned and Further Reading and Listening:On the Arab-Jew, Palestine, and Other Displacements: Selected Writings by Ella ShohatThe Arab Jews: A Postcolonial Reading of Nationalism, Religion, and Ethnicity by Yehouda ShenhavModern Middle Eastern Jewish Thought: Writings on Identity, Politics, & Culture, 1893-1958, edited by Moshe Behar and Zvi Ben-Dor BeniteThree Worlds: Memoirs of an Arab-Jew by Avi ShlaimIraqi Jewish Writers (Banipal Magazine of Modern Arab Literature), Shimon Ballas, Sami Michael, Samir Naqqash, et al. Here's Episode 91 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! 00:00-16:12--Pat congratulates Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel on a major court victory for those fighting to shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac. Nessel successfully argued to have the case sent back to the state, giving Line 5 owner, Enbridge, a major setback as it tried to have the case heard in federal court. Here's the thing: it's a states' rights issue! Also, failed MAGA Republican AG candidate, and the criminally indicted, Matt DePerno announces his run for the Michigan Supreme Court. It's a prerequisite nowadays for Republicans to be indicted in order to run for office! But criminal activity is part of the MAGA game as one of Dear Leader Trump's spiritual advisors admitted he molested a 12-year old girl. It doesn't matter to MAGA, though, because gaining complete power is what they crave to enact their MAGA White Christian Nationalist "Project 2025" agenda. 16:42-35:22-- Michigan Democratic State Representative Jason Morgan on his "Make It In Michigan" bill package that would divert millions of dollars from a corporate slush fund into investments in public transit, affordable housing, and community revitalization. He also gives his definition of "pragmatic progressivism."Rep. Morgan's 23rd House District comprises of parts of Ann Arbor, South Lyon, Salem, Plymouth and Northville. 36:10-42:20--"Last Call" on Democratic Representatives Dylan Wegela and Emily Dievendorf's counter proposal to the Make It Michigan package, which diverts more money from the corporate slush fund to affordable housing. Pat believes this is progressives actually negotiating with some strength. 42:45-43:44: Ending, including the new weekly Left of Lansing Twitter Poll on whether or not Trump appears at next week's presidential debate against Joe Biden. Welcome to Episode 78 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! Democratic State Representative, and House Majority Whip, Ranjeev Puri talks with Pat on a host of issues, including some key bills he helped pass the state legislature last year, such as gun safety, clean energy and climate bills, water filtration in schools and daycare centers, and more. They also talk about the importance of local and state elections. They also discuss the future of transit and mobility in the state, and how we can't just rely on cars for the future of transportation. Pat's opening remarks cover how Republicans hardly helped pass some consequential legislation last year, including many of the bills Rep. Puri helped get to Gov. Whitmer's desk for her to sign into law. Pat calls-out his Republican state Senator, Roger Hauck, for voting against many of these crucial bills. Pat's "Last Call" celebrates Democratic State Senator Sarah Anthony's bill to slash the APR for payday loans at 36%! The bill passed the Senate, and is on its way to the House for its approval. This would be a huge win for working Michiganders. Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com

Oregon lawmakers are deciding whether to make changes to the state’s landmark drug decriminalization law, Measure 110. A bipartisan committee has been meeting since October to hear testimony from law enforcement, addiction experts and treatment providers. Democratic state lawmakers recently put forth a proposal that would recriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs. Republicans have introduced their own proposal that includes harsher penalties for possession and public drug use. We’ll hear about the Republican proposal later in the week; but first, we turn to Senate Majority Leader Kate Lieber, D-Beaverton, and Senate President Rob Wagner, D-Lake Oswego. They join us to talk about Democrats’ plan for M110 and priorities for the short session.
On this edition of Paralalx Views, Peter Beinart, the Editor-at-Large for Jewish Current and author of The Beinart Notebook Substack, joins the show to discuss his views on Israel/Palestine amidst the war in Gaza. In his 2020 Jewish Currents article "Yavne: A Jewish Case for Equality in Israel-Palestine", Beinart definitively moved on from his two-state solution position on Israel/Palestine by declaring, "The two-state solution is dead. It's time for liberal Zionists to abandon Jewish–Palestinian separation and embrace equality." In other words, he became a proponent of a One Democratic State solution for Israel/Palestine that advocates equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis alike. Beinart's positions sent shockwaves through the Israel/Palestine discourse due to his high-profile as a journalist and commentator. He joined me on this edition of the show to discuss why he sees the fates and futures of Palestinians and Israeli Jews as being intertwined. We'll discuss how he came to his positions and his own intellectual evolution as well as his writings addressing subjects like the American Jewish Establishment (no, he's not talking about an antisemitic conspiracy theory, but rather the institutions that make up the American Jewish community), the dual loyalty trope, antisemitism, anti-Palestinian bigotry, and much, much more. And, of course, amidst this discussion the issue of the war in Gaza and Israel's bombardment of Gaza, which has claimed an estimated 25k+ Palestinian lives, after the October 7th Hamas attack will be part of the conversation. Peter will also offer his thoughts on pushes for a ceasefire, the beliefs of Rep. Rashida Tlaib, what he believes needs to change about U.S. policy on Israel/Palestine, and a potpourri of other topics as well.
TONIGHT: The show begins in California with Jeff Bliss to speak of the surprise that Dodger Hall of Famer Steve Garvey iscompetitive with Adam Schiff, Katie Porter snd Barbara Lee in a dominantly Democratic state. Here's Episode 69 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! I'm thrilled to have Democratic State Representative, and Speaker Pro Tempore, Laurie Pohutsky back on the show this week! We cover a range of topics including abortion rights, clean energy and climate change, if the Michigan Democratic Party's messaging machine is improving, the establishment and progressive factions of the party, and how she's changed since her upset victory as a progressive outsider back in 2018. I open-up the show by explaining how Donald Trump is not only boasting how his hand-picked Supreme Court reversed abortion rights for women across the country, but how his Christian Nationalist right-wing base wants to enact a federal ban. I also discuss the ridiculous infighting inside the ridiculous Michigan GOP, but I also share another disturbing poll showing Trump beating President Biden in the state. The "Last Call" covers how despite this occasional struggle between moderate/establishment Democrats and the party's progressive wing, progressive policies sailed through the state legislature in 2023. Does this prove progressives are winning? I think so. Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com –Pat
It's Episode 66 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! This week, I can't hold back my disdain for the Michigan Public Service Commission's decision to green-light an expensive, and short-sighted, tunnel project for the stretch of the 70-year old Line 5 oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac. Despite studies showing why the pipeline must stop operating, and that shutting-down the pipeline wouldn't lead to drastic energy increases, the MPSC chose a corporation's needs over the needs of Michigan's natural resources and the people relying on it. Then, progressive Democratic State Rep. Emily Dievendorf from the 77th House District, joins me to discuss a range of issues, including how that disastrous decision will hurt not just Michigan's environment, but for those people whose livelihoods depend on our Great Lakes. Rep. Dievendorf also talks about how progressives can push the Overton Window away from the extreme right wing, which is where it's been here in Michigan for the last half century. We also cover corporate welfare, voting rights, and protections for low-income land owners. The "Last Call" covers how, thanks to some strong progressive leadership, both inside and outside of Lansing, the Overton Window might already be moving slightly. Episode 52 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast is a little longer than normal, but well worth the listen! I take DTE Energy and Consumers Energy to task for failing to keep the lights on after storms rolled through the state. Despite keeping hundreds of thousands of customers in the dark, both energy companies are asking government officials to give the green light on more rate hikes! Perhaps this is the time we finally pass a clean energy bill to revamp the failing energy grid while lowering energy costs. I also discuss more right wing violence happening across the country, how we should expect more of it. And I talk more Ottawa Impact shenanigans as the right wing majority is gutting the Ottawa County Department of Health to pre-pandemic levels! Insanity! But we've got some strong progressives who are delivering results to each and every Michigander. One of them is Democratic State Rep. Carrie Rheingans of the 47th District, which comprises of Jackson and Washtenaw counties. Rep. Rheingans is part of the Democratic majority which has been busy reversing years of Republican mismanagement. She discusses the need for climate change policies, the frustration at DTE and Consumers Energy, her plans to create a single-payer health care plan called MiCare, her support for the state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and allowing college athletes to unionize. The "Last Call" applauds Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's calls to codify some important parts of Obamacare, but how I want to fight for Rep. Rheingans' MiCare plan so we can provide health care protections for ALL Michiganders, while providing major cost savings for everyone. Please, give the podcast a great review! leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com
Dom welcomes State Representative Amen Brown back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss, as a Democrat, why Democratic lawmakers have stood firmly against an already agreed upon introduction of school choice in Philadelphia. Brown is the first Democrat to speak out in favor of school choice, coming only a day after a Philadelphia labor leader Ryan Boyer joined the show to explain why he also is in favor of Pennsylvania's Lifeline Scholarships. Brown, in discussing the interview with Ryan Boyer reveals that one of his staffers has had to lie to send her daughter to West Chester schools, also revealing that he would never send his children to Philadelphia Public Schools in their current state. This week, I discuss how young people showed-up at the polls in a big way in Michigan, which helped Democrats pull-off the trifecta in state government. But despite the Generation Z breaking for Democrats in the last few elections, Democrats must continue showing that they are helping keep that critical voting bloc on their side. Then, State Representative Dylan Wegela joins me. He represents District 26, which comprises of Garden City, Inkster, Romulus and Westland. In the "Last Call," I explain how Michigan Democrats continue helping Michiganders while Republicans continue to act... weird. Hope you enjoy this week's podcast. The Tennessee Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to expel two out of three Democrats who led a gun reform protest on the state House floor after a shooter killed six people, including three children, at the Covenant School in Nashville. Gloria Johnson survived the Republicans' efforts by just one vote. Justin Jones is one of the Democratic lawmakers who was expelled from the Tennessee State House. He tells Anderson Cooper the vote was a way to “distract from the real issue” and what he plans to do in the future. They finish with the spicy meatball of a story regarding Clarence Thomas's unfathomable corruption.
Yoseph Haddad, Israeli-Arab, a fierce defender of Israel. Born in Haifa and grew up in Nazareth, he is working to bridge the gaps between Arabs and Jews in Israeli society. (Interview in English)
Yoseph Haddad's vision, to keep Israel's identity as a Jewish, democratic state (Hebrew) Yoseph Haddad, Israeli-Arab, is a fierce defender of Israel. Despite being proud of his identity as an Israeli Arab and Christian he said that he will fight to keep Israel as a Jewish state to ensure it stays a democracy. The interview today is in Hebrew
Yoseph Haddad is an Arab Israeli who believes with body, mind and soul in his country. And by his country, I mean the State of Israel, Yoseph joined up with StandWithUs UK at one of London's oldest continuous communities, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in west London. Being counterintuitive, Yoseph is the target of constant protest, even death threats – some substantial - as he advocates for both a Jewish and democratic state. A smallish opposition greeted his arrival at University College London. Campuses are at the epicentre of anti Zionism and Palestinianism. Yoseph was born in Nazareth and raised in Haifa, he served in the IDF's elite Golani battalion and served in the 2006 Lebanon War. He was badly injured and lost friends and comrades beside him in battle. He was a commander, which means an Arab commanding among others, Jews. Because as he says, it's the IDF, the Israel Defense Forces, not the JDF, it's not exclusively Jewish. He runs Together Vouch for Each Other, an organisation building bridges between Arab and Jewish Israelis and to aid Arab mobility in Israeli society. Yoseph is a captivating speaker, and I recorded his speech for this latest episode.

If she was married at the time she made the vow (to start at a later date) and her husband nullified the vow but she got divorced before the vow took effect, the nullification is still valid. This Mishna rules that the nullification follows the time the vow was made and not the time it takes effect. This issue also was raised in a similar case of a woman who vows to be a nazir when she gets married or when she gets divorced. There, Rabbi Yishmael and Rabbi Akiva debate whether we follow the time the vow was made or the time it takes effect. Is this the same debate or can we distinguish between the cases? The Mishna stated at the end that if a woman vowed and on the same day got divorced and remarried to the same person, her husband would not be able to nullify the vow she made earlier that day before they were remarried. The Mishna ended with the words: "This is the rule..." What do those words come to include in our Mishna and what do they come to include in a Mishna that appeared previously on Nedarim 71a on a similar topic but regarding a woman who was betrothed both times and not married? The Mishna lists nine cases where a father cannot nullify his daughter's vows. The main reasons why he cannot nullify are: 1. if she is already a bogeret (has reached maturity), 2. if she was married already (and now widowed or divorced), and 3. if her father died. The Mishna rules that if she makes a vow on condition that she will not benefit from others if she does work for her husband or the reverse, the husband can nullify the vow even though it the condition has not been fulfilled and the vow has not yet taken effect. The Gemara quotes a braita which shows there is a tannaitic debate regarding one of these cases and a different case. Rabbi Natan holds that since the vow has not yet taken effect, he cannot nullify it.

The tension between Israel's 'Jewish' & 'democratic' features should force us to become more of both. Lizzy Oziel & Yehuda HaKohen record a special Ḥanukah episode to address some inaccurate positions attributed to Yehuda by neo-Zionist journalist Samuel Hyde. The two also clarify some misconceptions surrounding the Vision movement and discuss what makes a society truly democratic. Maoz Tzur outro music by Yehonatan Roth.
On Antiwar Radio this past Sunday, Scott was joined by Muhammad Sahimi to discuss the protests in Iran. Last month, the Israeli Knesset passed a new version of Israel's infamous “Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law.” This law denies to Palestinian citizens of Israel a fundamental right that Israel's Jewish citizens take for granted (and, indeed, citizens around the world hold dear): the right to make a life together with one's chosen spouse, in the country where one hold's citizenship. Adopted originally by the Knesset in 2003 as a “temporary” measure ostensibly for “security” reasons, the law has been repeatedly renewed for almost 20 years, most recently in March 2022. The renewed law includes explicit provisions referring to its “demographic” purpose, leading Adalah to call it “one of the most racist and discriminatory laws in the world.” In March, Israel's Minister of Interior Ayelet Shaked celebrated the law's passage on Twitter, saying; “Jewish & Democratic State – 1; State for all its citizens – 0”. Featuring: Dr. Morad El Sana, who was among the first petitioners against this law when his family was directly impacted by it; Dr. Hassan Jabareen, who leads Adalah's challenges against this law at the Israeli Supreme Court; Member of Knesset Aida Touma-Sliman, who has fought against this law since its first passage – all in conversation with FMEP's Lara Friedman. Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.
Capitol Ideas: The Washington State House Democratic Caucus Podcast

We circle back today to find out what's changed, and what hasn't, now that 13 years have passed and, as chair of the House Appropriations Committee, Timm is the chamber's head budget writer.
Primary Democratic Candidate for State Senate District 15 Molly Cook did not disappoint. She would be the necessary new voice for the district and Texas.' Indivisible Houston's president Daniel Cohen said that this was one of the most critical races in the state and the country. A Molly Cook win will show a generational transition sooner than expected. Cook did not disappoint. Early in the interview, she laid out her grassroots organizing bona fides. She told us a little about her rearing in metropolitan Houston. Cook lit up most whenever she spoke about grassroots engagement. It was not hard to figure out her passion for healthcare as a registered nurse. She believes that if one makes sure to educate the populace, they will make the correct choices. This young woman is ready to be a state Senator. We need more young people to follow her path. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support
