Rules of the Game: The Bolder Advocacy Podcast

It's the holiday season, and we here at the Rules of the Game podcast would like to embrace the opportunity to give thanks to several amazing nonprofits, who thrived in the face of adversity, boosted civic engagement, successfully led the charge on critical advocacy initiatives, and supported their communities in times of need. From North Carolina, to Colorado, to Missouri, and beyond, nonprofit advocates boldly stood up to protect democracy, defend our rights, and secure justice for all. So, as we gather around the table with family and friends this week, we want to celebrate them and their incredible contributions to our communities this year. Natalie Ossenfort: Thank you to all of the amazing advocates who worked so diligently on ballot measures across the country to guarantee access to abortion, expand workers' rights, and ensure the freedom to marry in state constitutions. By creating robust coalitions of nonprofit organizations with shared policy goals, these advocates secured several major wins. From a successful constitutional amendment in Arizona spearheaded by a group of nonprofits organized as “Arizona for Abortion Access” to the “Freedom to Marry” coalition in Colorado, nonprofits across the country organized for success this year and for the protection of our rights. We thank you for your amazing contributions. Monika Graham: Thank you to the Innocence Project, a member of the Alliance for Justice, for their groundbreaking work in the pursuit of justice and advocacy on behalf of the wrongfully convicted. Thank you, in particular, for your advocacy on the Marcellus Williams case. To Mr. Williams: our hearts are with you and your loved ones. To the Innocence Project: Thank you. Tim Mooney: Thank you for the resiliency of the nonprofit community in western North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The North Carolina Rescue Collective delivered water, food, and supplies to local residents. Brother Wolf Animal Rescue also stepped up to ensure their animals were safe before the storm, and they continue their important work today despite extensive damage to their facilities. Brittany Hacker: Thank you to In Our Own Voice National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda. The organization educates the public and advocates for reproductive justice, while lifting up the voices of black women. They also actively engage in critical voter education and GOTV activities. Sarah Efthymiou: Thank you to the private and public foundations who support nonprofit advocacy efforts. In particular, the Gill Foundation funds charities that engage in LGBTQ+ advocacy to pave the way for a more inclusive future. In doing so, it empowers foundation grantees to tackle difficult policy challenges. Susan Finkle-Sourlis: Thank you to the nonprofits that worked so hard this election to educate voters and get out the vote. Shout out to the Interfaith Alliance for their “The Vote is Sacred Bus Tour,” a nonpartisan effort to boost civic engagement across the country. Victor Rivera: Thank you to the Health Forward Foundation, which endorsed Missouri's “Yes on 3” campaign to end Missouri's abortion ban and the Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages campaign. Their advocacy led to the protection of abortion access in the state, raised the state's minimum wage, and secured paid sick leave guarantees. Melissa Marichal Zayas: Thank you to the Organization of Exonerees for your commitment to the fight for justice, your care for the recently freed, and for standing in solidarity with others who are still waiting for their voices to be heard.

David Waldman is back again plowing through another KITM cold bedraggled, and as all of us, undermedicated for the task at hand. David was out with this cold on Friday, and I wrote a summary to an imaginary KITM. The summary to that summary: Tech bros created Spanish language dialect sensitive AI chatbots algorithm linked to young male Latino social media accounts based on what countries they follow in soccer, or any other niche criteria. They then had disinformation and conspiracy theories tailored specifically to them, but with the ultimate goal being GOTV for Donald Trump. Or to sum up that summary, while we were door-knocking, they were TikTokking. So, President Donald Trump was… look, all that takes more typing than he's worth. I'm going with D this term. D's dictating his cabinet. No Hulk Hogan or Kid Rock, but he might be thinking SCOTUS with them. Susie Wiles will head up Apartheid when Elon's busy and otherwise will be the focus of media fluff pieces on her grandmotherly charm. Elise Stefanik and Marco Rubio will… Wait, don't they hate D? Doesn't he hate them? Sure, they all hate each other. Never Trumpers are just Trumpers who haven't been assigned a position yet. Which brings us to Jonathan V. Last and the Bulwark, who urge us to let the Reich be the Reich, those things historically burn themselves out in around 4 years or so, no worries. Kevin Roberts, chief architect of Project 2025, hasn't found a Reichstag to burn, but does have an otherwise well-rounded list of incendiary targets. Roberts has named the Boy Scouts and Loudoun Schools, but conspicuously snubbed David Waldman for his pyre. Schools urge parents to be more sympathetic to the sexual harassing children. Black people are urged to pick cotton. Vladimir Putin is itching to take his new country out for a test drive, after all he was promised 24-hour delivery. The Russia-Ukraine war will be over in a day… that is, if no one else objects. Russian TV broadcast images of Melania Trump nude with the United States Seal behind her. If you want a picture of Melania with a Navy Seal behind her, it'll cost you extra. Judge Juan Merchan delayed his immunity decision in the NY hush money case, because, why not? Phil Williams, who we needed 500 more of the last ten years, has joined Bluesky.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, politics writer at Semafor, author of the "Americana" newsletter just one day out from the 2024 election. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on final-day swing state polling, the lingering impact of Trump's fascist rally at MSG, the electoral drag of Harris' support for genocide, RFK's fluoride attack, Israel's banning of UNRWA and enforced starvation in Gaza, and the NYT Tech Guild strike, before touching on Trump's ongoing deterioration and Mike Johnson's wild slip-up over the CHIPs Act. Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into the major Selzer poll out of Iowa, what it shows us regarding Harris' overwhelming support from women, and what this poll (and others) can tell us about the success of Harris' voter outreach across swing states. Weigel, Sam, and Emma also parse through the numbers behind early voting, why Democrats aren't particularly pressed about them, and the evolving constituency of independent voters, before touching on the GOP's GOTV fiasco – led by Elon Musk and Charlie Kirk. After briefly reflecting on the lingering impact of Trump's Bund rally at MSG, they get into a preview of the Senate fight, what the best/worst case scenarios are for Dems and Republicans across the Presidency, House, and Senate, and what particular races might act as bellwethers for the greater election. Sam also highlights a John Oliver segment on Georgia Rep. Ruwa Romman's comments on voting for Harris. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Greg from Massachusetts about down-ballot voting and the secret men for Harris vote, dives deep into the context for and meaning behind Selzer's Iowa poll (with some added commentary from Trump and, later on, Jeff from Iowa), and Tim from Chicago asks about the election night timeline. Tucker reflects on wrestling with his demons (and losing), RFK Jr. sets his sights on fluoride, and Steve Doocy can't quite put his finger on why women don't like Trump, plus, your calls and IMs! Snyder, 'the hope guy', sharing what she learned in the late '90s torturing freshmen in his research lab at The University of Kansas. What's the real-deal difference between positive psychology and magical thinking? How can we use positive psychology to make our experience of hope more tangible? And what can we learn from activists and those who refuse to give up? Westmoreland shares his background, from early campaign roles, including the Clinton-Gore campaign in 1992, to his current consulting work, providing insights into voter outreach, campaign strategy, and how the political landscape has evolved over the decades. With a critical Election Day approaching, Hawk and Westmoreland delve into the mechanics of polling, early voting trends, and the overall anxiety surrounding the political divide in the U.S.Westmoreland explains the intricacies of modern polling, addressing common misunderstandings by outlining how methodologies have adapted, especially since the 2016 and 2020 elections. He highlights the role of early voting and voter demographics, particularly noting the contrast in voting trends before and after COVID-19. A recurring theme is the importance of voter outreach efforts, or "get-out-the-vote" (GOTV) campaigns, which Westmoreland argues are pivotal in swing states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The conversation also covers obstacles posed by state legislation that can delay vote counting, potentially influencing perceptions of Election Day outcomes. In addition to the technical aspects, the episode addresses the political and cultural factors driving voter behavior. Westmoreland and Hawk discuss how candidates' strategies, including appeals to specific demographics, are shaping the race, while also touching on the role of social media platforms like TikTok in voter mobilization. They close with a look at potential outcomes in key states, examining factors that could affect results on Election Day. Their analysis offers listeners both practical and critical perspectives on the 2024 election, providing a nuanced understanding of the factors at play in the current political landscape.Find Will on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@westmoreland_pops SUPPORT & CONNECT WITH HAWK- Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mdg650hawk- Support Hawk's Merch Store: https://hawkmerchstore.com- Connect on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mdg650hawk7thacct- Connect on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@hawkpodcasts ALL HAWK PODCASTS INFO- Additional Podcasts Available Here: https://www.hawkpodcasts.com- Listen to Hawk Droppings On Your Favorite Platform:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3RWeJfyApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/422GDuLYouTube: https://youtube.com/@hawkpodcastsiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/47vVBdPPandora: https://bit.ly/48COaTBSimplecast: https://hawk-droppings.simplecast.com- Hawk Droppings RSS Feed: https://feeds.simplecast.com/pPVtxSNJ

According to a recent report by Harvard University, the first two decades of the 21st century were laser focused on "increasing voter turnout among the 'low propensity' voters in their communities, especially people of color and young people." These were groups largely "invisible" to the mainstream election industry. So, at the time, grassroots organizations welcomed the approach. But was it the right move? Today, Ohio is experiencing a higher level of disengagement and cynicism than in comparable states. Add to this, Ohio's notoriety as a "swing state" has lost steam--and national Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts have set their eyes on neighboring states like Wisconsin and Michigan. What can be done to repair the trust and relationship-building at the foundation of community organizing? And how can we better enfranchise those in our own communities? Join the City Club as Signal Cleveland's Frank Lewis takes on the "forgotten voter" and Ohio's GOTV efforts.

With too much going on to be neatly broken into headlines and deep dives, news items include Hurricane Helene and numerous weather disasters around the world, a lawsuit by members of the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio against Donald Trump and JD Vance, Chappell Roan's non-endorsement of Kamala Harris, the Rahway Library roundup, Rudy Giuliani's disbarment, the new haka world record, and much more. In Why Is This Awesome?, Wendy and Robin reflect on the health benefits of arts practices (and get side-tracked by The Church of the SubGenius). Wendy nominates Reverend Kat Irwin for Lefty of the Week. Things to do: Register to vote or confirm your voter registration today. Get active with Indivisible and learn more about Indivisible Rahway.
