This week on CodeWACK! Medicare for All is back in the spotlight! With two new bills recently introduced in Congress, what makes these proposals different from earlier versions— and why are some advocates feeling hopeful, even in the current political climate? What would a truly public, universal health care system look like, and how could it help curb the soaring costs, corporate greed, and bureaucracy plaguing our current system? To unpack this, we spoke with Rachel Madley, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Center for Health and Democracy. A former health policy advisor to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal — lead sponsor of the House Medicare for All bill — Rachel helped shape and reintroduce the landmark legislation in 2023. She's also a former FDA staffer and holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Columbia University, where she was active in both Physicians for a National Health Program and Students for a National Health Program. This period is characterized by an intense push for equal occupational opportunities that would yield economic prosperity for all people. This would be realized after World War II where due to the efforts of a variety of labor organizers, many influenced by Marxist theories, America would enter an era of the pinnacle of its union cooperation which would correspond to a great degree of prosperity. However, there was not just a push for jobs through legal and political protections there were efforts to create a variety of new civil rights and educational legislation. Women educator and scholars also became more involved in labor organizing as time went on contributing to the massive membership of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union to 300,000. The involvement of students in this era would foreshadow future involvement of student participation in the Civil Rights movement that would be crucial to ending segregation in the south. Asa Randolph and others relate a growing global sentiment as countries around the world urged for freedom against the chains of fascism, authoritarianism, and communism that a society is only democratic when the weakest members can exercise not just political rights but has the economic means to fend for themselves. President FDR relates to this global sentiment through his aspirations for greater equity and equality through his 1945 Economic Bill of Rights near the end of his life demanding health care, housing, a decent paying job, and more. As will see at the end of these podcasts, the political agenda of President Barack Obama, especially his passing of Universal Healthcare to provide insurance to millions of poor people and his advocacy against inequality, and efforts to end the 2008 national recession, was in many ways a fruition of this 1945 Economic Bill of Rights. This period from 1915-1954 saw a significant growth in political consciousness not just of the masses, but also the place of black women whose recognition of the identity of black, woman, and worker is critical in recognizing a heightened political consciousness and achieving rights for all people. Moreover, the rise of Thurgood Marshal saw the translation of the social and moral principles of passed luminaries especially the abolitionists in legislation. The Harlem Renaissance was an immense cultural phenomenon which was an incubator not just for artistic expression, but also for the race question. This would influence future cultural icons like Amiri Baraka and other intellectual who would be entering a more open academic space as the McCarthyism movement subsided, allowing them to influence a whole new generation of young people. The question is what methods, which overlap, would win out not just during the Second Reconstruction of 1954-1975, but also today: nonviolent civil disobedience and the realization of the Beloved Community, conservative black nationalism, cultural nationalism, revolutionary black nationalism, or black electoral politics?Tune in for the next video podcast to delve more deeply into these ideas.Next Podcast Monday February 24- Section 4- We Shall Overcome: The Second Reconstruction, 1954-1975 Part 1 of 2Next Podcast Monday February 25- Section 4- We Shall Overcome: The Second Reconstruction, 1954-1975 Part 2 of 2Next podcast February 28 Thursday:Section 5- The Future in the Present: Contemporary African-American Thought, 1975 to the Present Part 1 of 2Next podcast Finale March 1 Friday:Section 5- The Future in the Present: Contemporary African-American Thought, 1975 to the Present Part 2 of 2

A conversation with Abdul El-Sayed“Politics are like a kaleidoscope. If you don't like where you are, just keep turning it.”This week we are delighted to welcome physician, epidemiologist, author, and Director of Wayne County's Department of Health, Abdul El-Sayed.He shares his opinion that our healthcare system is broken because our politics is broken. The solution? Collective action, universal healthcare and persistent dialogue.——We spoke about the corrosive influence of monetizing healthcare for profit, the concept of an epidemic of insecurity as a root cause of our inability to empathize with each other, the need to use politics as a constructive and healing force, and how we can tackle many of the root causes of our healthcare problems through ground level collaboration. The Universal Healthcare Access Coalition (UHAC) has slammed the draft regulations that Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has published. The draft regulations have set out a new tariff determination framework for private healthcare in the country. The UHAC says the use of an exemption provision to the Competition Act to manage health policy is questionable and open to legal challenges. The health organisation (UHAC) says The government's proposal to implement only minor selected recommendations of the five-year-old Health Market Inquiry (HMI) in order to address high costs of private healthcare will "do nothing" to advance urgently needed reform of both public and private healthcare. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi recently complained about how private hospitals operate like airlines or hotels charging patients depending what targets the hospitals have to reach. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Universal Healthcare Access Coalition Steering Committee Member, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa

February 15, 1935. The American Medical Association, the AMA, is holding an emergency meeting in Chicago. The crisis? The possibility that the federal government is about to pass universal health insurance. Health insurance is a new concept in America at this time, but President Franklin Roosevelt's administration is looking to include it in a package that will include another piece of new legislation - Social Security. The AMA, which represents thousands of American doctors, fears that government-backed insurance could dictate how doctors care for patients, and how much money they're allowed to make. The AMA's resistance is the beginning of a nearly 20-year battle against this initiative. How does the AMA eventually use never-before-seen tactics to fight against a national healthcare program? And how is that program ultimately defeated? Special thanks to Marcella Alsan, Angelopoulos Professor of Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Professor of Public Health at the Chan School of Public Health at Harvard. Send us a textOn this final day of the administration of the 46th President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr, we will look back at his Life and Career, and his final week as President of the United States. It began in 1972, when our Host Randal Wallace, was only a year and a half old, and it would continue unabated for the next 52 years. A remarkable run for any political figure in either party. We start the episode with a phone call from President Richard Nixon on a tragic day in the life of Joe Biden, just after his wife and daughter are killed, and his two other sons, are injured in a horrific automobile accident in December of 1972, and we end the episode with his farewell address on January 15, 2025. In between, our nation saw Vietnam come to an end, Watergate, the Iranian Hostage crisis, the height of the Cold War, the fall of communism, the Gulf War, the dot com boom, the second Gulf War , the War on Terror, a war in Afghanistan, the first African American President, the passage of Universal Healthcare, the rise of Donald Trump, three impeachments and one near impeachment, and Joe Biden's own election as President. It is a remarkable and long career. Joe Biden was there through an amazingly long consequential period of American History. We try to capture some of that while also chronicling his final week in the White House. Plus near the end of the episode, our Host, Randal Wallace, a lifelong Republican, will share with you his own experiences dealing directly with the President and share his final thoughts on the man, that in the ultimate irony of life, is the only President of the United States our Host has ever worked directly with on one occasion, Joe Biden, a Democrat. For the first time in 24 years, Washington has a new state Insurance Commissioner stepping into the role. Patty Kuderer is currently a state senator representing the 48th district, which covers areas including Redmond, Bellevue, and Medina. She’ll become Washington’s 9th insurance commissioner in January. It’s a big job - Kuderer will be in charge of licensing and regulation for every insurance industry in the state, as well as handling consumer complaints, and lobbying the legislature to change laws that impact Washingtonian’s insurance policies. Today, we’re focusing on just one part of the job: health insurance. Because Kuderer is jumping in at an interesting time: she’ll be taking office at the same time the second Trump term begins – which could have major implications for how healthcare is managed. The president-elect has tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and changes are expected to subsidies and regulation under the new administration. Meanwhile, the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson and subsequent wave of vitriol toward the healthcare industry is bringing problems in the American healthcare industry into sharper focus. After a summary of this week's NYC Universal Healthcare vigilante and witnessing the anger our country's greedy insurance companies have sown, we get into recapping the latest two episodes of Salt Lake City. The ladies try "camping" for an afternoon, Mary and her son have a heart to heart that has us rooting for them, and Angie and Lisa find peace as more infighting kicks off. At Meredith's bat mitzvah, several feuds come to a head with Angie taking on almost everyone and coining the term "high bodycount hair". Folks are shocked at the results of the 2024 US Presidential Election. Despite insulting everyone they could and promising to end free elections, Trump and MAGA republicans are set to control our federal government, now with no judicial restraints. For all purposes, Trump is about to be the United States' first dictator.Everyone is blaming everybody, everything everywhere, all at once:• Election Interference. • Democrats.• Gen Z.• Corporate owned news media.• Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter.• Kamala, Bernie, Hillary, Joe.• Putin, Netanyahu, Kim Jon Un, Winnie the Pooh.• Jill Stein, election hipsters. • Chappell Roan.• The Taco Bell Chihuahua. Everyone, except Republicans. Although most Americans agree on progressive issues like Universal Healthcare, billionaires paying normal taxes, LGBTQ equality, abortion access and wishing the price of eggs would go down, Republicans got practically the same number of votes the last election, while Democratic voters stayed home watching Grey's Anatomy. Today comedian and comedy writer Dan Cass joins us to look at what happened during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.
