Well the big, beautiful bill is getting mixed reviews. So far, Elon Musk is the harshest critic, calling it a "pork-filled abomination." In the Senate, Ron Johnson and Rand Paul are holding the line to get spending down, Senator Johnson wants government spending back down to pre-pandemic levels. Congressman Andy Harris is the Chairman of the Freedom Caucus. Rep. Harris initially voted to pass the bill to get it through to the Senate. This time around Congressman Harris says if the Senate rolls back the spending cuts and doesn't get rid of the massive abuse in Medicaid, he and the Freedom Caucus will vote to sink the bill. Congressman Jim Jordan took NPR's CEO to task at a congressional hearing recently. Rep. Jordan exploited how they get stories wrong and have eighty seven Democratic employees and zero Republican employees. The real question is, are we finally done funding NPR and PBS as taxpayers? Will AI be regulated by the government? The BBB has a section that strips states of the right to make laws and regulate AI for 10 years. Will one of Biden's aides blow the whistle on the autopen before the House Oversight Committee? Jim Jordan unpacks it all with us. Featuring: Rep. Donald Trump went to Capitol Hill this week to push House Republicans across the finish line on his big domestic policy bill. Behind closed doors, he told conservatives not to “F— around with Medicaid,” and told blue-state Republicans to take the SALT deal on the table: $40,000 for four years, then snapping back to $30,000. That would cover about 90% of blue-state filers, but not the ones making the most noise. Even with Trump applying pressure, guys like Andy Harris and Mike Lawler are still holding out. Some members are softening, but others like Thomas Massie are dug in. So, for now, Speaker Mike Johnson's goal of getting a vote within 48 hours is shaky at best. The bill itself is massive — over 1,100 pages, with tax cuts, defense spending increases, and border policy changes. It would still remove Medicaid coverage for more than seven million people, depending on which estimate you believe. And of course, any version that passes the House is going to get shredded in the Senate. Whatever they vote on now, they'll end up voting on something worse later. So a lot of this feels like performance. The fight is real if you're in the trenches, but from the outside, it looks like an inevitable mess. The bottom line is that they have to pass this. Everyone's worried about the attack ads, about the carveouts, about what they'll be blamed for, but if they don't pass this, they've got nothing. No achievements. No wins. And that's a death sentence for 2026. Trump knows it, and that's why he's pushing so hard. The longer this drags out, the more nervous the business community gets. Right now, things are relatively stable — tariffs are high but consistent, regulations are locked in, and the tax code hasn't changed yet. That kind of stability is gold to investors. It gives them permission to move. If you pass this bill now, businesses start planning in Q3, making decisions in Q4, and consumers start to feel it by next summer — right as the midterms heat up.And that's the ballgame. Republicans don't want to be running in 2026 on the ghost of Joe Biden's presidency. They want to run on Trump's second-term economy. They want to say, “This is what we did. Do you want to go back?” That's the message — and it only works if the economy is good. So from a strategic perspective, if you're a Democrat, you want this thing to grind. Drag it out. Make the House Freedom Caucus fight harder. Blow it all up and pray the delay ruins the timeline. Because that's the only way this thing doesn't end in a campaign-ready boom for Republicans. My guess? The bill passes the House in the next five days. I don't see what changes between now and the two-week delay the Freedom Caucus wants. Someone's going to have to eat it, and most likely, that someone is going to realize there's no better option coming. As for the SALT caucus — I'm still not sure what they're waiting for. Whatever it is, it's not making them look particularly sympathetic to the rest of the country.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:37 - Original Sin Book Thoughts (with Chris Cillizza)00:35:17 - Update00:39:13 - Big Beautiful Bull00:48:41 - Russia Talks00:53:17 - Kristi Noem00:57:42 - Original Sin and the State of Cable News (with Chris Cillizza)01:37:56 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Former Commissioner of the New York Police Department Bernie Kerik discusses the recent failure of law enforcement to protect a governor's mansion in Pennsylvania, highlighting systemic issues in security protocols and oversight. Kerik attributes the problem to reduced standards, lack of training, and the influence of political ideologies on law enforcement. He praises some red states for effective policing and criticizes blue states for hindering law enforcement efforts. Additional interview with Ashley Rindsberg discusses the decline of journalism integrity in the Trump era, highlighting the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning story on Russia collusion that was proven false by new FBI documents. They criticize the media's lack of self-reflection and accountability, citing the New York Times' recent admission of no proof for Russia collusion. Rindsberg notes the rise of independent news organizations and the shift towards evidence-based reporting. Finally, Andy Harris, House Freedom Caucus Chairman, stresses the importance of extending tax cuts and reducing government spending, including potential savings from banning sugary drinks in the SNAP program. This week's guests are Chris Wellbelove (recently appointed managing director) and Steve Buckingham, CEO of Blakedown Landscapes.Blakedown just won the contract for the Queen Elizabeth garden scheme for The Royal Parks as part of their landscape construction framework. Chris outlines work being done using "environmentally sensitive construction methods" and Steve discusses some of the highlights of their work with The Royal Parks which goes back some 35 years, including the Greenwich Park Revealed scheme which won them a National BALI Award. The Outdolf Landscape project at RHS Garden Wisley won the firm another BALI Award that year and Chris talks about the pleasure of a free-flowing collaboration made possible by working with the hands-on and knowledgeable Wisley team. The pair also discuss some of the challenges faced in the landscape sector, including increased and unpredictable lead-in times for materials and plants.Chris says: "By the time we get to see it it's got a specification it's got planning permission based on a certain set of materials so for us to have much input is difficult", adding "where we are involved at earlier points we do have these discussions about 'where are you purchasing from, is it ethical, is it sustainable, is there a UK alternative?'. On plans for growth, Chris talks about how contractor design work is now part of every contract they undertake, so the firm took on Ruth Miller as a design manager to manage those design elements efficiently without disrupting the progress of the project. Andy Harris also joined as an operations manager to bolster the management team. Steve adds they are aiming for "organic growth" while looking expand activities outside their traditional territories in the South of England. Nigel Payne has also come on board to help develop Blakedown's grounds maintenance offering.Among the varied and numerous challenges thrown up in 2024, Steve says the "continually wet period" from autumn 2023 to spring 2024 was one of the hardest. And a new challenge faced by all landscape contractors is in the planning department. On the one hand, a change in pre-commencement conditions means Blakedown is being involved in signing those off after starting the contract causing delays of several weeks to commencement of works. This is exacerbated by a lack of and high turnover of overstretched planning officers, all adding to delays. "[A project] we were due to start last September, we are only getting on board now [early March]... it has a real effect on your sales forecast and your planning."Another area of growth is public realm and infrastructure improvements set in motion by the last Government's 'Levelling Up" agenda and Blakedown is embarking on a major project in to transform Canterbury's open spaces including a 'green link' to provide a safe way for pedestrians to walk around the city. Chris is inspired by how it is finding ways to "improve accessiblity but not a the cost of nature"."For the next five years it is about organic growth...We're not looking to grow hugely; we want to do what we do really well, and keep doing that." The budget resolution vote takes place today in the House. The proposal is set to reduce trillions of dollars in spending reductions and tax cuts that are key to President Trump's agenda. Speaker Johnson cannot afford to lose votes and so far it looks like there are three Republican holdouts. The White House celebrated a big victory in court over the Associated Press. A federal judge rejected the AP's request for a temporary restraining order to allow the AP access to President Trump. The White House asserted in their statement that access to the president is a privilege and they stand by the decision to hold the fake news accountable. Senator Marsha Blackburn is hopeful the House will get the budget bill passed with crucial elements of President Trump's agenda, including tax cuts and slimming down the wasteful, bloated government. Senator Blackburn has been rigorously fighting for the unredacted release of the Epstein files. For 2 years she asked Director Wray of the FBI to address this issue to no avail. Now, with the help Pam Bondi at the DOJ and Kash Patel at the FBI, Senator Blackburn is hopeful all will be released. Her broader fight is to take down the $150 Billion a year human and sex trafficking industry in its entirety. Senator Blackburn is committed to rooting out every tentacle of this massive form of modern day slavery and looking forward to support from Bondi and Patel. Congressman Andy Harris is prepared for a long day in the House as the budget vote takes place. Harris is excited about the bill which has significant deficit reduction and committed to getting it over the finish line. Maryland Congressman Andy Harris slams sanctuary states and President Biden for rewarding “people who come into this country illegally with citizenship,” instead of shutting down the southern border. Speaking to the heinous murder committed in Maryland in later 2023, where a mother of 5 was brutally killed by a 23 year old man from El Salvador, who had already committed murder in his home country, and “escapes across our open southern border to the United States and ends up in one of the sanctuary states, Maryland and commits this brutal crime. I mean, it's this is what we face as a nation, we have to secure our southern border.” Additional interview with News of the Week with AMAC Spokesman Bobby Charles.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
