Finally Winter appears to be coming to an end, and so too our strand of Winter Tales. Behind me you can probably hear the fire crackling on the hearth, but soon we will warm ourselves with the return of the sun, taking the chill off our bones and quickening the long Winter nights. However, we couldn't leave you without one last, sharp icicle of fear to remind you that we are not out of the woods and into the meadow just yet. Tonight's story, Sub-Zero is a cold walk in a dark place, courtesy of writer and friend of the podcast, SA Harris. We had the honors of hosting a few events last year to promote their second novel, Seahurst, a chilling tale of ghosts and the unquiet past on the Suffolk coast. Subzero should give you a taste of that novel, and we heartily recommend you pick up a copy. Tonight's reader is Ruby Bardwell Dix, one of East Anglia's most promising new acting talents. She is fresh off a barnstorming production of Richard II on the stage, and will soon join the pantheon of iconic horror character as the Shadow Woman in the forthcoming film The Spirit Lock, shot on the Suffolk Borders. So please enjoy one more shot ice-cold darkness before it melts away for good, SA Harris's Sub-Zero....

Hello and welcome back to another in the Hallowed Histories strand of Winter Tales, and we hope you all had a very pleasant Christmas. Christmas is an odd time, as i am sure you realized. What strikes us as being so odd is the way in which it collapses the old into the new. Christmas traditions that have been with us since the Victorian era, and sometimes even further back, are not settled in with presents of cutting-edge technology, video calls to distant relatives, ecards and the AI algorithm tempting you with targeted Boxing Day sales. This weird mix of the future and the past can lead to a very tense present. Shane Brown's story tonight, DBL645 (mono) touches on this. We are big fans of Shane Brown's work over here at Hallowed Histories. His novel, Welcome to Marlington, was one of my favorite books of the past few years, and his annual tradition of releasing a new ghost story every Christmas has become a very welcome custom. You can find these stories on amazon, and they are all well worth checking out. Tonight's story combines a lot of Shane's recurring themes – music, the esoteric world of collecting, ghost stories and East Anglia. DBL645 (mono) is read by David McCabe, who was so magnificent in our Sherlock Holmes reading last year. David is an actor, script editor and voice artist, who has had a full year playing Phileas Fogg in the Maddermarket's revival of Around the World in 80 Days. David has that too-rare gift for a voice actor of being able to breathe life into every individual character, and he uses that to excellent effect in this reading.
Hello, and welcome back to the Hallowed Histories series of Winter Tales A huge you to those who attended last Wednesday's event at Stranger's Hall featuring local historian, author, and paranormal expert Neil Storey. It was a pleasure to watch him captivate a packed house with his extensive knowledge of Norfolk's macabre tales. Our gratitude goes out to Neil, as well as the staff at Stranger's for hosting us. We look forward to organizing more events there soon, so stay subscribed for further announcements. Today's story is another from Alexandra Evans, who began this series with The Black's Tale. Alex is a retired nurse from Norwich, and her experiences in that profession inspired this story. In addition, she has been involved with amateur drama for 40 years; writing, directing, and acting. She has portrayed roles ranging from the back of a pantomime to Margaret Thatcher. Recently, she has focused more on her writing and has had several sketches performed on the amateur stage, including a monologue showcased at the 2023 INK festival Halesworth. We are deeply grateful for her contributions to this podcast, and we hope you enjoy tonight's tale of a supernatural vigil.
Hello and welcome back to the Hallowed Histories strand of Winter's Tales, stories to amuse, to chill and to wrap presents by. One of the joys of Christmas is meeting with friends, and i am happy to announce that this story combines two old friends of the show, a writer and an actor who are much welcome visitors back to this podcast. Helena Bacon is an academic, a writer and an educator with interests in the gothic, folk horror, mythology and the landscape of Norfolk. In other words, all the right things. Her story tonight, Ten Knocks, combines a lot of those interests and yet remains wholly original. It's power of mounting dread will stay with you long past the end of this episode, but hopefully won't come creeping around your door. The story itself is performed by John Davis, who was kind enough to work with us last year on one of the Slow Burn anthology tales. John is an actor and voice artist, who was recently seen in a revival of The Philidelphia Story and can be seen soon in The Clearing at the Sewell Barn Theatre in Norwich. If Helena's story puts you on the edge of your seat, it's John's voice which will tip you over. Thanks to both of them, and to you for sticking with us for the Winter Tales. See you again next week. Tickets are still avaible for our next live event, historian Neil Storey talking about the dark side of East Anglia in the beautiful Stranger's Hall: - Hallowed Histories present Neil Storey at Strangers' Hall - Norfolk Museums Service

Greetings, and a warm welcome back to the Hallowed Histories series of Winter's Tales. A heartfelt thank you to those who ventured through Storm Darragh to join us at Stranger's Hall in Norwich, where we delved into the allure of ghost stories with renowned local author SA Harris. Your presence was greatly valued, and we extend our gratitude to the event staff for the opportunity to gather in such a historic venue. This evening's tale, titled 'Fungal' by Shannon Lewis, is a selection from the Slow Burn Horror anthology, a project we were delighted to support last Christmas. We reserved this story for an occasion that called for a special narrative and a fitting narrator. It's a subtly unnerving work of horror that insidiously takes root. Bringing life to Shannon's story is the multi-talented Jack McLeod—actor, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and our esteemed colleague. Jack recently captivated audiences in Richard Hand's dynamic grand guignol production at the Sewell Barn Theatre and contributed his expertise to the anticipated feature film, The Spirit Lock. We trust you will find 'Fungal' a hauntingly memorable experience and eagerly anticipate your company next week for another installment of Winter's Tales.
Welcome back to Hallowed Histories, presenting the first of our annual Winter Tales series. This year's lineup is exciting, featuring returning favorites like Sally Harris and Shane Brown, as well as new voices, all linked by the haunting landscape of East Anglia—a muse for the likes of Susan Hill, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Montague Rhodes James. For those craving more, the British Library's latest addition to their Tales of the Weird series, 'Eerie East Anglia,' comes highly recommended. Edited by Edward Parnell, a friend of the show, this anthology gathers classic terror tales from the region. If you're seeking the ideal place to purchase it, Holloway, a newly opened store off St Benedicts Street in Norwich, offers a quaint and esoteric selection of local folklore. We're also thrilled to announce the return of our live events this winter. On Sunday, 8th December, Stranger's Hall will host a talk with Sally Harris and Shane Brown, delving into their works, lives, and fascination with the extraordinary. Tickets can be secured via the Norfolk Museums website. Kicking off our tales is local writer and actress Alexandra Evans, whose story aptly heralds the advent season. Enjoy this appetizer, and join us each week throughout Christmas for more.

This tale underscores the importance of heeding the warnings given by our pets, often in unexpected ways. From the heart-pounding fright of a lonely cabin to the disturbing truths uncovered in a graveyard, this podcast explores the thin line separating the living from the dead and comfort from the uncanny. As winter's darkness descends, these narratives remind us to listen closely to the wild's whispers and our loyal animals' silent cues. Join us for an exploration of the eerie and the inexplicable, and don't forget to support our show by liking, sharing, and subscribing.
We are reaching the end of our strand of the Winter Tales here at Hallowed Histories, but we couldn't resist a couple more stories best enjoyed after dark. For the penultimale episode we are drawing again from the anthology Slow Burn Horror. We supported this project from it's Kickstarter inception all the way through to the beautiful book we now have on the shelf. We kicked off the season with One Candle by Kathryn Leigh, and now we revisit this treasure trove again with Within Walls by Georgina Pearsall. It's a remarkable story, full of squirming eeriness and atmosphere, plus it's set in Norwich. Reading it is the multitalented Emma Zadow. Emma is a playwright, actor, writer and all round artist. I met her at Adam Z Robinson's ghost story writing seminar at the National Centre for Writing. Check out Adam's episode on my other podcast, as well as Steph McKenna's episode from the NCW. When we left Sherlock Holmes he was just about to explain who and how the vicious attack on Mr and Mrs Cubbit was perpetrated. We return you once more to the beautiful Norfolk countryside, the scene of a most gruesome murder. Once again, thanks to David Mccabe for his reading. Dave poses a frigid physics question. Someone, who actually knows what she is talking about, helps Will provide an accurate answer- saving the young cowboy from an embarrassing intellectual faux pas (As if Will even knew what a faux-pas was). Hello and welcome back to the Hallowed Histories strand of Winters tales, and tonight we have a real classic for you. The Adventure of the Dancing Men is a classic slice of Sherlock Holmes, and one set in North Walsham. We're breaking it into two parts for you, so stay tuned for the conclusion in a couple of days. Arthur Conan Doyle was a frequent visitor to East Anglia, and as we covered in our episode on Black Shuck, he drew inspiration from Norfolk's demon dog to create one of his most iconic creations – the Hound of the Baskervilles. During another visit to Happisburgh in 1903, Conan Doyle noticed the sketches of the landlord's son in the hotel he was staying. These dancing stick figure men became the inspiration for the macabre code that is at the heart of this story. Conan Doyle was a man with many interests – golf, folklore, walking, ghost stories, you know, all those things that we do best around here. Breathing life into the story is our reader, the actor David Mccabe. As with a lot of our readers this season, I met David while working on the Maddermarket theatre's revival of Dracula last November. David played what is traditionally the thankless role of Jonathan Harker, but brought enough wit and energy to his acting to make sure his performance really stood out. It was a pleasure to share a dressing room with him as well, because he is one of the most well-read men I have had the pleasure to meet, and that's always a quality to treasure. But for right now, imagine yourself in the study of the world's most famous detective, with the fire roaring, foggy London just through the window, and a case about to present itself. We're back with our strand of ghost stories for Christmas, this time expanded all the way through January and encompassing ghost stories, horror stories, detective stories and anything else with a local connection that tickles us. This time Kathryn Leigh returns to haunt us with One Candle, an itchy and scratchy tale of moths, mothers and monsters. Kathryn recently collaborated on the Slow Burn horror anthology we have been banging the drum for, more details here. It's read by John Davis, most recently seen as Van Helsing in the Maddermarket Theatre's revival of Dracula, who brings all his formidable talent to this eerie tale that will have you turning the bedside lights off for a change. Welcome to episode 89 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about the 1992 compilation, “Winter Tales 2,” from the MIDI label. I hope you've enjoyed MIDI's wintry compilations over the last two episodes. Despite the repetitiveness, there are some real gems included on them. I'm looking forward to revisiting a few of the artists when I cover their other Christmas songs. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get this episode out this month, but I made it just under the wire. I'm caught up for the moment, and I'm hoping I'll have enough time to stay ahead of schedule the rest of the year. I have some great episodes planned and I'm going to do my best to get to them all. Join me back here next month as I cover a couple of really great albums. Up first is Jazz singer Yuki Izumine's 2008 alubm, “Let It Snow!” Then join me for another fantastic compilation, “Christmas Songs,” from 2010. Plus, keep in mind that November 1st is Christmas Podcast Day. A bunch of us Christmas podcasters will be releasing special episodes. Stay tuned for further details. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
Welcome to episode 88 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about the 1988 compilation, “Winter Tales,” from the MIDI label. As I said in the episode, this is a really solid album. You'd be hard pressed to find a more varied group of artists, but the resulting product flows together well. There really isn't a bad track here. I hope you found at least a few you enjoyed. Be sure to join me back here in a few days for the 1992 follow-up, “Winter Tales 2.” Then listen in next month as a I cover a great Jazz album from 2008, Yuki Izumine's “Let It Snow!”, and another great compilation, “Christmas Songs,” from 2010. You're sure to enjoy them. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. Welcome to episode 86 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this special Christmas in July episode, I talk about a selection of summery Christmas songs from a variety of artists. As I said in the episode, I really enjoy putting these episodes together. It gives me a chance to share some songs that might not fit in another episode, and artists I wouldn't be able to cover otherwise. At this point, I think I've found all the low-hanging fruit, so it will take a lot of digging to find other Summer Christmas songs. I have plenty for next year, and should be good for the following July, but I'll have to work hard to find more than that. Just to recap, I've posted the titles and album covers for the songs from this episode below. 1. Pauro Cesar Trio – Merry X'mas In Summer 2. Akiko Ozawa – Christmas In August 3. Masako-san – Summer Christmas 4. You Hayami – Summer Holy Night 5. Momoiro Clover Z – Midwinter Sunshine Summer Time 6. Conny, Dibbs, Boz & Friends – Surfers Christmas Wish 7. Sexy Zone – It Snows In Sexy Summer 8. Mariko Nagai – Midsummer Eve 9. Natsuko Upper Crust – X'mas & Sun 10. Tenchi Souko and Honey Knights – Aloha Santa 11. Snyder – Rise '80 – Midsummer Eve I hope you enjoyed this year's Christmas in July. This is probably my most eclectic selection of songs yet. I can't overstate how thrilled I was to finally get a few of them. August is 80s month, so be sure to join me back here for a couple of great 80s episodes. In my first August episode, I'll be paying tribute to the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto who passed away earlier this year. I'll be covering the 1983 movie, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” and its soundtrack. Then join me on the 25th when I cover the MIDI label's 1988 compilation, “Winter Tales.” I'll follow that up in September with their 1992 compilation, “Winter Tales 2.” If I get a little extra time, I'll try to put out a bonus episode. Whatever the case, I'll be covering some fantastic music and a true classic movie, so be sure to tune in. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. 'I can hold the brooch in my palms. I can carry on her legacy and lessons – the way she took care of the old garden; how to treat plants and people. I can remember her relentless resilience, and the way she took care of all of us.' (Anett Teresia)SHOW NOTES:The STORY Anette sent, about her Grandma's words, reads like a meditation, for an object, but also a person, that remained elusive to her for a long while and is still elusive, or rather mysterious in the story today.Written like a poem and with added notes, this story leads us to a DISCUSSION about the strength, resilience and example of Grandmas and we extrapolate on the role of women in general and the legacy (often, not material) which they leave behind. The RECOMMENDATION follows the same theme – the theme of formidable women- and though the character is by far a positive one, we recommend this documentary for its quality, historical value, and last and not the least, the element of surprise.Thank you so much, Anette, for sending your story. To hear the whole episode, look for EPISODE 8 of series 4 – The Series of Things, all on the MY BEAUTIFUL STORIES PODCAST.We would love for this series to be collaborative, and we invite you to bring your stories to the fold! Please share the stories of those things that are not just things here or send me an Instagram message.Click send your story or send me a message on Instagram. Would you like to hear a winter tale or six? I have put together a compilation of my December tales from last year so you can fully indulge in the spirit of winter. The first tale is the Cailleach, a moving celtic mythic tale in which we discover how mountains were formed and what happens when winter goes on for too long. Our second tale is Morozko, a Russian wonder tale in which we discover that kindness can overcome cruelty and a little magic goes a long way for either good or ill. Our third tale is a traditional fairytale straight from the Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Rose Red, in which we discover that being a bear is not always permanent, kindness is key to a happy life and owning treasure is not guaranteed to improve your temper. Our final three tales are a charming collection of short stories with a touch of Christmas: two of them are very English, Sir Cleges & the Christmas Cherries and The Apple Tree Man, the third is a lovely Ukrainian tale, The Christmas Tree Spiders. They are very sweet spiders, I promise, please don't be put off. We're kicking off our traditional collection of stories of the macabre in two ways: For a Victorian ghost story in the classical style, please get a free ticket for our exclusively commissioned performance of E.F. Benson's Outside the Door by renowned actor and voice artist, Richard Crowest. Get your ticket here. Secondly, each week from November 7 until Christmas, we will be uploading original readings by local authors and actors. This week our selection comes courtesy of S.A. Solomon who will be reading an excerpt from her novel Live For Today. This piece originally appeared in an anthology entitled New Jersey Noir edited by Joyce Carol Oates and published by Akashic Books. Stay tuned for more stories each week in the run up to Christmas.
This week we speak to Małgorzata Osypińska (Margret) from Nordic Ice Theatre. Margret is the founder and artistic director of Nordic Ice Theatre, Norway's new and first Ice theatre company. With a unique blend of figure skating, artistic choreography and live musicians on the ice, Nordic Ice Theatre is going to blow your socks off.The utterly beautiful figure skating performances with classical musicians on the ice, in the shockingly beautiful backdrop of Bergen, Norway, as seen on YouTube, prompted this one on one interview. There is something beautifully different about Nordic Ice Theatre (or Nordice as it is known to some), the combination of figure skating, live musicians and beautiful choreography create an experience that is sublime. In this interview we hear how Margret and the rest of the Nordic Ice Theatre company are creating a new future for figure skating in Norway, by being the first ice theatre company in Norway; and by delivering their own unique take on incorporating live music intrinsically with the performance. Margret speaks about how her figure skating career, dance and choreography expertise combined with skills from what is now the Nordic Ice Theatre team to form something that we at Ice Twizzle, and shortly the rest of the world will realise is greater than the sum of its parts.Though those parts are spectacular including:Maciej KuśFigure skater, multiple Polish National Champion and Representative, currently coach at Bergen Kunstløpklubb Beate - Helene AndersenFigure skater, coach at Loddefjord Idrettslag, coach of the synchro team Bergen Umbrellas Ingrid Louise Vestre Figure skater, junior coach at Bergen Kunstløpklubb Julia MalikSoprano and cellist, Nordic Ice Theatre´s Musical Director, General Director of Sunrise Bridge Music Production Anders Hannevold Composer and pianist, Nordic Ice Theatre´s in - house composer Vladimira ScigulinskaViolinist; currently plays in the first violin section at Slovak State Philharmonic KosiceNordic Ice Theatre also work with guest artists in their upcoming show ‘Winter Tales'.So get comfy, listen to the show and feel very special that few people have heard the voice of Margret or Nordic Ice theatre, so you will be able to say, I heard of them on a podcast before they were world famous and gave something to artistic figure skating that was both awe-inspiring and uniquely Nordic Ice Theatre. To find out more about Nordic Ice Theatre, check them out at:Their website-https://www.nordicicetheatre.com/On Instagram-@_nordiceOn You Tube-https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGPhdLGLIJc3A1HY_vz6brQOn Facebook-https://facebook.com/nordicicetheatre
‘In hindsight I can see perhaps it was good that I was forced to confront my grief in so unadulterated a manner, but it was so hard - I would never choose it!’ TamlynTW: This story and the conversation which ensues includes mentions of grieving and death.Tammy lost her mother a few weeks before the first UK lockdown. Even more, 8,000 miles separated them and returning to the UK was in itself a little miracle.DISCUSSION:We discuss how having to grieve in unusual situations (such as a global pandemic) can feel like imprisonment with grief. We argue that in order to overcome grief, a level of grounding ourselves in daily routines and usual encounters with people can be essential. Tammy was deprived of this. Our discussion concludes with our own positive experience of having overcome grief, or rather, having learned to live with the loss.RECOMMENDATIONOur recommendation is Arvo Part's Stabat Mater, a meditative and wonderfully evocative piece of music.Series 3 of My Beautiful Stories podcast offers a space for YOUR STORIES to be heard. ‘and while she bends down to sit at the corner of fall and winterher worries settle down with heras they shake and shakeuntil the very last brown leaf drops.’ (@komorebi.koyama)Today’s story comes in the shape of a poem, shared by Jennifer Koyama. Jennifer is a writer and poet who captures the fragility of the human nature in her writing.DISCUSSIONWe discuss the relationships between feelings and nature, and question whether this has dramatically changed during the last year. Are we going to nature with a different intention? Is our communion with nature becoming less unidimensional and more of a coming together, a coming towards each other with deeper understanding and need?To listen to the episode, look for My Beautiful Stories in your podcast app. If you’ve enjoyed the episode, please share it with others.RECOMMENDATIONOur recommendation is Louise Gluck’s The Wild Iris, a series of poems which link feelings and nature in a beautiful way.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/alexcuncev)

Welcome to Season 2 of Dragonfly Tales, a story podcast for children of all ages. Happy New Year! May 2021 bring you light, love and happiness. We have two wonderful wintry tales to see you through the cold dark evenings, and this episode we welcome guest storyteller Giles Abbot from London to the podcast.Giles is a writer and voice artist, but he became a storyteller about 20 years ago when he suffered sudden (but not total) loss of sight. Our favorite storyteller Mark Onspaugh shares the eerie Yule Time lore that comes out of Iceland which can be terrifying and hilarious at the same time. If you have listened to our previous episodes with Mark, you know he doesn’t leave the show without sharing his amazing fiction with us. Mark reads two original stories: “Jack Frost” from his book Christmas Ghost Stories: A Collection of Winter Tales and a new one he wrote for the show, “Christmas Spirit.” If you want to listen to the stories on their own, we have them available for play below. Mark Onspaugh - Christmas Ghost Stories Mark’s books are available at Amazon. Mark Onspaugh is a native Californian who grew up on a steady diet of horror, science fiction, and DC Comics. He’s a proud member of the Horror Writers Association and the International Thriller Writers association. In addition to the produced film Kill Katie Malone, he has several other screenplays in various stages of development and was also one of the writers of the cult favorite Flight of the Living Dead. While Onspaugh is definitely a fan of the horror genre, he also writes science fiction and comedy. He polished his comedy writing (and improv skills) at the Groundlings Theater in L.A., where he studied under Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”), Michael McDonald (“Mad TV”), and Heather Morgan (“The Dana Carvey Show”). Earlier in his career, Onspaugh studied Special Effects Makeup in college and continued to pursue this passion under the tutelage of premier makeup artist Thomas R. Burman (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers”,” Cat People”, “Scrooged”) with additional lectures by such notables, among others as Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker (“American Werewolf in London”, “Men in Black”, “Planet of the Apes”).

Christmas is that holly jolly time of year where we are all supposed to rejoice and be happy, but with the growth and popularty of Krampus from European folklore in our pop culture to even "Christmas Haunted Houses" to go through, Christmas seems to be taking a darker turn. We talk to fiction author Mark Onspaugh aobut this book, "Christmas Ghost Stories: A Collection of Winter Tales" and what inspired him to explore the supernatural during the holidays. Mark Onspaugh is a California native and the author of over fifty published short stories. Like many writers, he is perpetually curious, having studied psychology at UCLA, exotic animals at Moorpark College's EATM program, improv comedy with the Groundlings and special effects makeup with Thomas R. Burman, Rick Baker and Rob Bottin. Mark has also written for film and television. He is the author of "Christmas Ghost Stories: A Collection of Winter Tales," featuring well over a dozen stories which can be read alone or sewn together, Onspaugh's original Christmas ghost stories entertain with supernatural flights of fancy, mysterious creatures and four interwoven fairy tales from the shadowy Black Forest. Nominated for a prestigious Pushcart Prize, writer Onspaugh is delighted to have been compared to his favorite authors Ray Bradbury and Stephen King.

Librarian Margy Burn shares experiences acquiring rare and unique collections during her career at the National Library and other great Australian research collections. Margy Burn recently retired as the National Library’s Assistant Director-General, Australian Collections & Reader Services. Before joining the National Library, she held senior positions working with Australiana collections at the State Libraries of New South Wales and South Australia. Margy began working with archives and special collections at the University of Adelaide Library. Her first ‘field work’ was a series of visits to Mary Clark, the daughter of Federation advocate Sir Josiah Symon, to sort Mary’s large collection of papers documenting work in England and Australia with touring ballet and theatre companies. The octogenarian Mary told stories of nursery life in an Adelaide hills mansion; served a homemade lunch she had cooked on a wood stove, presented on ceramics made by her friend, the influential British potter Bernard Leach, while her cat Fleance prowled hopefully under the table. Margy was hooked. Since those early days, Margy is proud to have played some role in the acquisition of papers of women including P.L Travers, Eva Cox, Dale Spender, Helen Caldicott, Kay Cottee, Meryl Tankard, Dymphna Clark, Drusilla Modjeska and Anne Summers, to name a few. Today's Guest: Milo Ventimiglia, actor, "Heroes," "This Is Us" Milo Ventimiglia, actor, Heroes, NBC Milo Ventimiglia is not your average save-the-world superhero, although he does play one, Peter Petrelli, on NBC’s hit series “Heroes.” In real life, he’s an ambitious actor and producer whose company, Divide Pictures, just completed a series of five animated holiday shorts available exclusively on the American Eagle Outfitters website. Milo narrated the first episode, “Home for the Holidays”; others feature the voices of Kristen Bell, Lil Jon, Adrianne Palicki, and Pete Wentz, the Fall Out Boy. Milo Ventimiglia Twitter • Order Heroes: Season 3 from Amazon.com BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: I hate to pimp for American Eagle Outfitters, but it seems appropriate here. I have to think that any fan of yours -- and “Gilmore Girls” for that matter -- is going to love “Home for the Holidays” because you play yourself. How much fun was that? MILO VENTIMIGLIA: It was a lot of fun. The “Home for the Holidays” tale was kind of a combination of stories between myself and Adam Green, the writer/director of “Winter Tales.” I was just thinking about different situations I’d find myself in, or that he’d find himself in, and came up with the tale of a guy who’s taking a really miserable plane ride home. ANDELMAN: Now, that’s never happened to you, has it? Order from Amazon.com by clicking the DVD above! VENTIMIGLIA: Not exactly. Like I said, it was a combination of stories between myself and Adam Green. ANDELMAN: How weird was it, though, to find yourself playing yourself and have this kid, I don’t want to give it too much away, but the kid has a little problem with reality, I guess? VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah, I guess, a little bit, a little problem. All he wants to do is relax, but he can’t do that. ANDELMAN: What’s a guy like you doing in the realm of animated holiday shorts? How did that come about? VENTIMIGLIA: It was just another opportunity to work with American Eagle Outfitters. We did one series of shorts with them earlier called “It’s a Mall World,” which I produced, and we just found a great partnership with them. And we pitched the idea of Claymation, and they’re really into it, so we developed a bunch of stories and made these classic tales our own. And what you get is five great shorts. MILO VENTIMIGLIA audio excerpt: "I think in a world where there are people with abilities, I’d take my character’s. He’s a sponge. He can soak up anything. But if I just had any ability, I’d want to be able to teleport. I could go have coffee in Paris if I wanted to and lunch in Italy, then be right back." ANDELMAN: It’s a lot of fun. How did you get people like Pete Wentz and Kristen Bell to come on board? VENTIMIGLIA: We called up their agents, had excellent relationships, and once you pitched them the idea, they were into it. Kristen Bell, I called myself and said, “I’ve got this thing I’d love for you to work on,” and she was just like, “I’m in. Whatever you want to do, I’m in.” And then the same thing with Lil Jon, Adrianne, and we just kind of threw it out, and they were more than happy, more than excited, to be a part of it. ANDELMAN: What do you want to do next? If you’re kind of playing with this now, I’m guessing you want to go on to bigger and better in production… VENTIMIGLIA: I enjoy it all. I enjoy directing. I enjoy producing. I enjoy acting. And I take the opportunities that are presented to me when they come up. Of course, I’d love to direct a longer format; I’d love to produce a longer format. And there are a bunch of things that I am circling around, but anytime I’m involved in any one of those three, I can direct and you’re producing for my job, I’ll take it. ANDELMAN: We have to talk about “Heroes,” of course, don’t we? We can’t take live calls today, so I did the next best thing, and I solicited questions from friends of mine and fans of yours. VENTIMIGLIA: Alright. ANDELMAN: So these are coming from a few places here. Let’s start with this question from DigDog: “Did the writers’ strike hobble the show by forcing producers to end any of the storylines prematurely?” VENTIMIGLIA: I don’t think it hobbled us so much as it cut us short. The writers’ strike was one of those unfortunate things that stops production. Beyond the strike, you can’t write anything new. You can only produce what’s been written. We basically ran out of material. I think the producers, it was their intent to give some kind of a wrap-up to what became a very short season just so that people weren’t left with too many questions. In my opinion, it was a good thing to do to, hopefully, tie up a couple loose ends, and we leave people wanting a little bit more. This Is Us Season 1 DVD, starring Milo Ventimiglia. Order your copy today by clicking on the image above! ANDELMAN: This second season got hit by some criticism early on that it was taking too long to get to the meat. And then it seemed like those last couple weeks, the critics and the fans may have come around a little bit. VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah, they did. We had some problems early on, still working out problems toward the end, but I know the show started to get back to that same feeling, that same sentiment that we all worked very hard for. But it’s one of those things. You just gotta understand that a season is long. You’re making usually 24 episodes, so I think when there’s a little bit of a delay, there’s not that instant, rewarding scene or moment or episode, and people get impatient. So it’s finding that balance between giving and getting. ANDELMAN: It must be hard for both the writers and the actors to be on a show where the expectations are so high. You almost reach a point where, no matter what you do, you’re going to let people down. Is that the case? VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah. You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t. You just gotta know that, ultimately, the work that you’re doing, the work that you’re putting in, it’s your best efforts, and it’s everybody’s best effort. That being said, though, all those best efforts have to come together in sync. Otherwise, the show doesn’t have a heart. ANDELMAN: Before the writers’ strike set in, how much did you know of plot lines for your character going in? And how much do you think that may change going forward with the delay in getting back into production? VENTIMIGLIA: I knew quite a bit. I knew where we were headed, but I also had the luxury of not really having to follow too closely because Peter had amnesia. I went in for a meeting with Tim Kring before we started filming, and he said, “Peter can’t remember anything.” I said, “Okay, great. Let me know as I need to know stuff.” I just kind of waited around. Usually, you’re pretty eager to know where you’re headed. I had no idea where Peter was going to go, and it didn’t really matter at that point. Where we’re going to be going after, again, that’s all up in the air. I think the production team was taking into consideration the criticism we got and hopefully, wanting to get back on track to the same feel we had the first season. So I think things are going to switch up a little bit. ANDELMAN: Is there any question whether you’ll stay with the show? Eric, who wrote in, said that he had heard rumors that you didn’t necessarily want to continue. VENTIMIGLIA: Who said that? ANDELMAN: Eric. He’s one of the people who sent in some questions for you. Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD above! VENTIMIGLIA: Really? I’m a real guy, and I also have a contract that I hope to honor. So I’ll be on the show, I think, as long as they would have me and as long as I’m obligated to it and put my best work forward, and I’ll leave everything else up to time. I’ve got other ambitions, but when it comes to the show, and when we’re in production, that’s what I’m doing. ANDELMAN: Dr. Blogstein, who has a show on BlogTalkRadio, wanted to know this: “Are there considerations in taking a few episodes this coming season or next to go deeper into the back story and focus on your character’s parents as well as George Takei’s character and some of the older heroes?” VENTIMIGLIA: I think that was our intent -- to understand a little bit more. That’s always been the question. People want to know how did these abilities come about? The way the show’s been going -- the storyline -- it seems that there was a greater mystery as to why these people, how these people have these abilities. Again, that’s a lot up to the writers about what they’re looking to explore. And, of course, the actors, we can give our two cents in what we’d like to see, what we’d like to get into, but it’s ultimately up to the writers. MILO VENTIMIGLIA audio excerpt: "I went in for a meeting with Tim Kring before we started filming, and he said, 'Peter can’t remember anything.' I said, 'Okay, great. Let me know as I need to know stuff.' I just kind of waited around. Usually, you’re pretty eager to know where you’re headed. I had no idea where Peter was going to go, and it didn’t really matter at that point." ANDELMAN: Sharon wants to know -- and remember, I didn’t write these questions -- if you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating? VENTIMIGLIA: Is my what? ANDELMAN: If you’re not dating Hayden… VENTIMIGLIA: My phone broke up. ANDELMAN: I’m sorry? VENTIMIGLIA: I said my phone had a little glitch for a second. ANDELMAN: Oh. Okay. Sharon’s question is, “If you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating?” VENTIMIGLIA: It’s one of those funny questions that… ANDELMAN: I’m glad I didn’t ask. VENTIMIGLIA: I think when you’re young and in this industry, and you work as much as I do, you try to spend time with people that want to spend time with you. That’s about all you can do. ANDELMAN: Alright. Last question: Mimi asks, “What powers would you want in real life?” VENTIMIGLIA: I think in a world where there are people with abilities, I’d take my character’s. He’s a sponge. He can soak up anything. But if I just had any ability, I’d
