"Love Makes The World" Well, he may live on a remote farm now, but back in the 80s there was nothing remote about Andrew Farris. The guy was everywhere. The Perth-born/Sydney-raised musician got his start in a band called Doctor Dolphin, but you probably know him best from his second band: INXS A multi-instrumentalist adept at piano, harmonica, and guitar, Farris and his brothers Tim and Jon along with Michael Hutchence, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers were at one point the biggest band on the planet. And that was at a really competitive time—you had U2, Depeche Mode, R.E.M., and DURAN DURAN--and INXS at their peak were bigger than all of them. They put out ten records with Hutchence and two others after his death and they were elected to the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Pals since high school, Farris and Hutchence were a lethal songwriting combination and Farris really was the sonic architect of INXS’s sound. Not only that, but he co-wrote all but one of the band's top-40 hits in the U.S. Farris went on to produce for everyone from GUN to Yotu Yindhi and Jenny Morris and he snagged a Producer of the Year award at the ARIAS in 1990. He was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016 and in 2020 he was awarded with the Member of the Order of Australia. His new EP "Love Makes The World” is a country-tinged offering that’s contemplative, captivating and comforting. It’s a thoughtful blend of rootsy rock and lush acoustic numbers that perfectly capture the wondrous things the world does to the human heart. It’s aching, it’s wistful and it’s utterly lovely work. In this conversation Farriss talks to Alex about the joys of hard work, what it’s like to live in such a remote location and what made him pick up a guitar and write this new batch of such inspired material.

I was so excited to catch up with my old mate with the fantastic voice and the cool dance moves - Phil Burton. He was just about to fly off to Perth for quarantine #2 (he and family had arrived back from the US a month prior and had already completed 14 days in a Sydney hotel) so I was thrilled to get a cheeky hour to chew the fat together on the pod. I had the pleasure of working with Phil Burton and the rest of the band 20 years ago. They were a hard-working lovely bunch of young men then and now they are equally hard working and just slightly older. For those that don’t know Human Nature let me tell you… they have had four albums reach number one, have all been made orders of Australia, were recently inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame, and have spent the last 12 years with a residency in Las Vegas performing their incredible Motown Show - I know over achievers!! And they are all looking mighty fine – I’ll take a job-lot of whatever anti-aging cream they are using please! The rest of Human Nature are heading straight from Las Vegas to WA ahead of their Dec show there followed by Brisbane and and the Gold Coast. HOW MUCH HAVE WE MISSED LIVE MUSIC…. Ah 2020. For Australian fans of the band their ‘Good Good Life’ tour will see the guys perform live shows all around Oz in 2021 – check out www.humannaturelive.com for more info and tickets. Welcome To Another Episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast. When it comes to guests, I am always intentional about finding people from all walks of life. This includes thought leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, actors, artists...the list goes on! Why do I do it? Because in every conversation, there is a golden thread. I can look inside for the patterns...the codes of meaning, and in doing so, I can connect more deeply with one thing—our human nature. And that awesome because today's guest is also from chart topping music group Human Nature. His name...the one and only Phil Burton. So what has Phil Burton got to say about purpose? What I want to tell you is that Phil's journey encapsulates what the golden threads of purpose are all about. His story is one that captures the power of a dream, the focus, the commitment and the discipline to do the work, it is a story about courage, taking risks, and showing up time and time again to do world-class work as an individual and as a team with one focus - the creation of harmonies and rhythm. It's a conversation that is bigger than the singing of a song - because its about the meaning of the music. The joy and the happiness shared with so many people over a career spanning more than 30 years. Finally, this is a story of deep humility, and Phil Burton has that in spades. He is one of the kindest people I know.Now...I have something to confess. I am currently trying to make my introductions a little shorter with strict instruction from the shows producer but even if that wasn't the case and I had an hour to do this intro I still wouldn't get through the long list of award-winning hits, albums and shows produced by these Aussie legends. What I will say is Human Nature has been at the top of their game for more than 30 years, they have held a residence in Vegas for the last tens years with unprecedented success, and In November 2019 Human Nature were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.So without further delay lets pop on those dancing shoes and get ready to croon with none other than the Aussie music legend himself the one and only Phil Burton.

Kasey Chambers is a living legend. Five number one albums, fourteen ARIA Awards, she recently became the youngest woman to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Kasey grew up with music. As a kid she’d travel across the Nullabor with her dad, at the end of each day the family would always gather around the campfire to sing songs. She’d end up playing with the family band, but it was her 1999 debut album The Captain that was her breakthrough to a solo career that has been rich and rewarding. That debut turns 20 this year, so I thought it’d be fun to reflect back on the other musical breakthroughs through Kasey’s life. The moments that have nudged her in a new direction, or won her as a fan. Hearing Kasey talk about music is a joy; as with her own music, she wears her heart on her sleeve. From Emmylou Harris to Beyonce to Steve Earle, this is a beautiful journey through a life filled with gratitude. Emmylou Harris - ‘Boulder to Birmingham’ Ben Harper - ‘Fight For Your Mind’ J.S. Steve Kilbey is a songwriter, musician and author. Steve is best known as the songwriter and frontman of Australian rock band The Church, a role which he has inhabited for 35 years across the band’s extensive and respected career. In 2014, he became a published author with the release of his memoir, Something Quite Peculiar, which explored his history working as a professional musician, from his first job playing in a popular cover band in Canberra as a teenager, through to more recent years as he approaches 60. I first met Steve in February 2013, when I interviewed him for my book Talking Smack, about his experiences with illicit drugs in general and his addiction to heroin in particular. The Kilbey chapter opened the book, not only because it was the most immediately engaging and transformative story, but because Steve is such an articulate and fascinating interviewee that I was tempted to just publish the transcript in its entirety, and leave it at that. (An edited version of the Kilbey chapter from Talking Smack was published in The Weekend Australian Review, which you can read here; there’s also a funny YouTube clip filmed at our first meeting here.) This conversation took place on a Sunday afternoon in a downmarket hotel room in inner-city Brisbane in early July, when The Church were playing two shows at The Triffid. This was billed as a double-album tour, where the 1982 album The Blurred Crusade and the band’s most recent album, Further/Deeper, were intended to be played in full, but as we discuss here, the band soon realised that wasn’t such a good idea. While we spoke, Steve and I sat on the floor of the hotel room, with the microphone between us. There were a couple of other blokes in the room while we recorded: fellow journalist Michael Dwyer, and Mike Brook, who filmed our interview as part of the documentary about Kilbey he’s currently working on. Our conversation touches on the experience of writing his memoir, and Steve’s response to my review published in The Weekend Australian; the differences between his on-stage and off-stage personalities; how he went about learning the bass guitar; how his artistic career is dictated by money, and how he enjoys being lean and hungry; the origins of his remarkable blog, which is named The Time Being; and how he prefers to write lyrics in a stream-of-consciousness style that’s rarely edited between the page and finalised albums. Steve Kilbey began his professional music career when he was 17. He played in several bands before forming The Church in Sydney in 1980. After some initial success, Kilbey and The Church shot to international fame in 1988 when their album Starfish, featuring the song ‘Under the Milky Way’, rose to the top of the music charts in both Australia and the US. Kilbey has collaborated with a vast array of musicians on various projects and has produced a number of solo works as well. He is also a painter, poet and music producer. In 2010 The Church was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Steve Kilbey currently lives in Bondi, Sydney and continues to evolve through his craft as a vocalist, songwriter, poet, artist, actor, writer and guitarist bringing all his talents together for unique and instinctive performances.
