In this bonus episode of the Friends With Money Podcast, hosted by Michelle Baltazar, editor-in-chief at Money Magazine, the focus is on the impact of recent US tariff policies, referred to as 'Liberation Day' by Donald Trump. This week's guest, Tim Harcourt, chief economist at the University of Technology Sydney, discusses the adverse effects these tariffs will likely have on American workers and farmers, despite Trump's intentions to bolster the US economy. For Australian investors, Harcourt advises a cautious 'wait-and-see' approach and emphasises the long-term strengths of the Australian market. #friendswithmoney #michellebaltazar #timharcourt #trumptariffs Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Money Website YouTube Podcast Playlist Email Us: podcast@moneymag.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

By Anne Henley I live in South Carolina on Lake Murray outside Columbia (the capital). I am married, and we just celebrated 30 years in October. I have two grown children, one is in his first year of graduate school in Michigan and the other just got married (Oct 29, 2022). Back story. I became complacent and tired. I have always been an active person, and actually have a degree in health fitness from Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. The year I graduated is not important (Ha HA). I never really got what I consider huge, but I did my biometrics for my health insurance and I saw the word obese under my BMI. We moved into our forever home the summer of 2018, and my youngest started college that August. My oldest was in graduate school and living in downtown Columbia. I was by myself a lot and enjoying the empty nest. We (husband and I) ate when and what we wanted. Keep in mind I am only 5' 1'' so a small amount of extra weight really shows on me. My husband is 6' 4 “and pretty much eats what he wants, and his eating habits are horrible. He just recently was diagnosed with Diabetes and has had to revamp his whole life. His GP had told him several times he was pre-diabetic and gave him Mediterranean diet info. Fast forward to April of 2019, my son and daughter were home for Easter. I felt unattractive, bloated, and none of my clothes really fit. Keep in mind I was still exercising (walk at lunch) after work, Nordic trac ski machine before work, however I was overindulging by rationalizing that I had exercised. Well, we had pictures taken for Easter, the kids and I outside Church after service. I looked at it, did not recognize myself and was totally disgusted with myself. By Tuesday (4/23/19) after Easter I had stumbled across Intermittent Fasting online. I read about it, and it made sense. I immediately order Gin's book (Delay, Don't Deny) off amazon. I actually started fasting before I received the book. April 23, 2019 is what I consider my starting date, I weighed 167 pounds, and I was mortified and so disappointed in myself. I started with 16:8 and it was so relatively easy. I found the FB support group and off I went. The hardest thing for me was black coffee. I chocked it down the first couple of days, but I got the hang of it. My husband kept asking are you sure it was worth it. I weighed every day and I still do. So, looking back at my progress 4/23/19 – 167 lbs. 4/25/19 -162 lbs. 4/30/19 -160.4 5/11/19- 155.3 (my daughters grad school Graduation) 5/23/19 – 142.7 (one month and I lost 24 pounds) 10/23/19 -123 ( 6 months) forty-four pounds lost. Leslie Taylor is a stay-at-home mom and grandma and has worked as a medical website content developer. She enjoys taking complicated medical information and presenting it in a creative and easy-to-understand manner for the general public. She is currently writing a book on fasting called Fast Well Feast Well and will be releasing the content of the book in a free weekly newsletter called FastWell. Leslie was a healthy weight until her 30s when a stressful cross-country move caused her to suddenly gain 25 lbs (11kg). This is when her dieting history began. She tried Weight Watchers and other calorie-restrictive diets. Each time she lost some weight initially but then regained back even more. She tried keto in 2018 but found it too restrictive, losing only 10 lbs. and then plateauing. Then her dad passed away in January of 2022 from heart complications from having type 2 diabetes for 30 years. She got on the scale and found she weighed 180 lbs. (81 kg), which was 50 lbs. (23 kg) above her comfort weight. Her blood sugar numbers were pre-diabetic. She knew something had to change. She had heard about fasting from her sister. Also, her dad had reversed his diabetes through fasting in 2018 but this was too late since his heart damage was irreversible. She began doing OMAD in January of 2022 and faithfully did OMAD every day for 6 months but lost no weight or inches. Then on August 1st of 2022 she started ADF. She is now down 34 lbs., her blood sugar numbers are healthy again, her fasting insulin serum number is A+, and she has numerous NSVs. I am a 42-year-old mom of three amazing kids ages 15, 13, and 10. I am a wife of 19 years to my best friend Steven. We are both teachers who have been in the classroom for almost 20 years. We enjoy life in a tiny house on 3 acres—a little slice of “country” in crowded Northern California. We grow our own fruits and veggies and currently have about a dozen chickens. I was first introduced to IF in 2015 by a co-worker who told me she only ate between the hours of 12 and 6. At the time, I thought she was completely insane, but looking back on it, I realize how healthy and vibrant she looked and must have felt. Fast forward to May 2022 when I stepped on the scale and saw almost 180 lbs., a weight higher than I'd been at nine months pregnant with any of my children. On a whim I googled Intermittent fasting and decided to just jump in (what did I have to lose??) I began with a 20 hour fast and haven't missed a day of fasting since. I'm currently down 50+ pounds on my IF journey. The Fasting Highway News. My book about my own story The Fasting Highway is available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle. Heather is a 43-year-old mom of 2 and has been married to her husband, Branden, for 10 years. She is a Kindergarten teacher from Southwestern Ontario, Canada. At the end of October 2021, a friend sent her a video of Graeme in a podcast interview. She listened to it and had a “lightbulb” moment and immediately ordered Graeme Curries book, “The Fasting Highway”. After reading Graeme's story in less than a day, she immediately started clean fasting on Monday, November 1st, 2021. It was the perfect day to start! She started OMAD with clean fasting, and the clean fast made all of the difference in the world. Something just clicked for her, and she has clean-fasted every single day for over a year now. In the past, Heather had a lot of success with a Ketogenic diet, but the stressors of teaching online during a pandemic took their toll. She regained some of the weight she had lost with Keto and was feeling a sense of desperation about her weight. IF gave her the freedom to eat a wider variety of healthy foods and eliminated the guilt that came along with eating out or enjoying “treats'' once in a while. She has shifted towards more of a low carb/paleo eating style and includes things in her window that she had previously thought were off limits for the rest of her life because they weren't considered “Keto.” She limits sugar, bread, pasta, etc., and focuses on real, whole foods. She is still working towards her ultimate weight goal, and realizes that this is her lifestyle now, so it will take as long as it takes, and that's ok! She can't imagine NOT clean fasting every day for the rest of her L*IF*E! The Fasting Highway News. My book about my own story The Fasting Highway is available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle. I'm 51. Always have struggled with my weight. Grew up in Winnipeg Canada. Suppose the weight issue has been related to anxiety and been addicted to eating to sooth. Weight didn't get to out of control until I started trucking in 96. Married in 99 not a healthy relationship. We had Mitch in 2008 when he was born, I had gotten down briefly to 220ish. (Atkins). Weight went out of control at that point still long-haul trucking Winnipeg to Toronto to Vancouver every week. Changed jobs in 2012 probably weighed 350 a scale wasn't my friend. Worked a couple of seasons for local municipality running equipment. 2014 started working for the province's highway department. Marriage was crumbling living in separate rooms etc. last time i stepped on a scale was before Christmas of 18 and it was 370#. Of course, I did the I'll start in new year. Ate like normal until then. I didn't know of intermittent fasting at that time but only ate lunch and supper 16-8 but was still having sweetener and flavored creamer in my coffee. Weight came off pretty quick the first 5 months. Officially separated and moved to my little 16x20 cabin no indoor plumbing in June. Was down to 330 Ish and able to start walking my dogs. Pretty regimented with diet chicken and salads have been my constant. Low carbs always have worked well for me. The more weight I lost the more I was able to walk and slowly my miles per day increased. Divorce was finalized last year, and I was able to move a house in on my family property and got internet etc. discovered audiobooks and the world of IF. Has set a goal of being below 200 by my 50th birthday and barely made it (still dirty fast). I couldn't get my head around no cream in my coffee. Hit 199 prior to my 50 but rebounded too 215ish. Podcasts became part of my life the beginning of this year and I was able to wrap my head around no cream in my coffee. Exercise and diet are a huge part of the change. Black coffee has let me experiment with longer fasts and I enjoy the spiritual aspect of fasted runs or bike rides. I work out every day now and feel great. I needed to be a better man for my son (Mitch). I'm in the exercise bike every morning before work for 30 minutes. As I write this it's -32. I got to 185 in November this year with clean fasting and have settled in to Omad with a longer 48-68 hours once a month. The Fasting Highway News. Rachel Awad lives in Cairo Egypt and is an expat from the US. In today's episode we recap Rachels journey and what has transpired over the last two years since she was last on the podcast in episode 6. We delve into ADF and OMAD and the differences that Rachel has found from both protocols. Rachel is experienced with intermittent fasting and has served as a moderator in popular online fasting communities. Rachel has had some ups and downs on her fasting journey over the past two years as she shares candidly in this episode. As a long-term faster, two of Rachel's key messages are 1) give yourself grace. IF isn't about quick weighloss or perfection – it's about clean fasting as it fits into your life. And 2) learning to recognize satiety and closing your window when you feel those signals is lifechanging, especially for those of us who have been struggling with overeating for much of our lives. By Ava Brodie I'm married to Terry he is so lovely and supportive, we met late in life, we have a golden doodle dog he is a cutie, and we live in the United Kingdom. I was a very skinny child eating whatever I like especially sugary stuff and this addiction continued into my adult life. When I reached my 30s my weight started to become an issue, I remember walking into my first weight watchers' group, I spent the next 25 years in and out of slimming clubs. I've spent a small fortune trying to control my weight without any success! I'd lose the weight but before I knew it, it was back again and a lot more. I've always loved exercising, especially walking and using weights. 2016 I came across Jason Fung and I was fascinated by IF loved the science behind it and read the Obesity Code. I then found Gin Stephens DDD and started fasting, I was really enjoying this way of eating and thought that in my window I could eat whatever I wanted but realised that I couldn't, so I spent quite a long time trying different fasting protocols, also I wasn't clean fasting so really didn't have much success. Through Gins books I came across Graeme Currie who wrote The Fasting Highway, reading his story really resonated with me, I think I nodded through most of his inspiring story, I got excited and thought if this man can get through all of his struggles, lose 132lbs in 14 months then I was certain that I could finally get a grip on my weight once and for all and lose my excess weight. As soon as I started clean fasting, I felt different, previously I'd stuck to 16.8 or 18.6 so I upped it to 23.1 and my weight started to come off, my NSVs were fantastic!. I gave up sugar in 2020 and have not looked back. Cara Straughn lives in southwestern Missouri, USA. She is a 39-year-old mom of 3 and has been married to her loving husband, Mike, for 17 years. Cara has struggled with her weight ever since junior high. She learned at the young age of 17 that she had developed PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and struggled with the emotional and physical issues that come along with that over the next 2 decades. Over that time, she tried so many different ways to lose weight, all working in the short term, but too expensive and difficult to stick with in the long term, so the weight always came back on with a vengeance. By her mid to late 20's she had reached her highest recorded weight of 261 pounds. She would go on to try more ways to lose weight, getting down to 165 pounds at one point, but got tired of tracking and counting and struggling, so she eventually gave up and found herself back up to 250 pounds. After struggling for years with infertility, she and her husband decided to become foster parents. They welcomed 2 boys into their home in 2017 and was able to adopt them in 2018. That same year she tried to lose weight again, first doing weight watchers, then seeking the help of a weight loss doctor, who would prescribe her appetite suppressants and tell her to eat just once a day. She dropped 65 pounds in 10 months and then suddenly found herself pregnant! Over the next 9 months she would go on to gain 70 pounds during her pregnancy! Over a year later, she was at 245 pounds and decided it was time to crack down and lose weight again. In October 2020, she discovered intermittent fasting, and she finally found something that not only worked, but was easy to stick with for the long term. After losing 97 pounds over the last 2 years, she has just switched over to maintenance and is looking forward to a long, healthy, and active life with her husband and children. Kevin and Rindi Trainer have been married for almost 37 years and live in the great state of Texas in the United States. They have raised two children who are now adults, and they became grandparents in August of 2022 to a sweet baby boy. To back up a bit, in March of 2020. Rindi went for her yearly physical and was not completely surprised to find out she was pre-diabetic. Her weight was up, blood pressure was up, she just knew she wasn't in a good, healthy place. Family history of losing her mom and maternal grandmother to diabetes in their 50s motivated her to start researching changes. That led her down the Keto/Low Carb rabbit trail, but she decided Keto was too restrictive and low carb was going to be challenging enough. Nothing really changed until after a July 2020 vacation to South Dakota and looking at the pictures reminded her that she really needed to make a change. In August 2020, Rindi shared with her husband, Kevin, that she was going to be making some changes and he could join her in the journey or not. They had both tried and lost weight on Weight Watchers before and calorie counting, and Kevin had even done an all-liquid diet at one time. He lost weight but gained it back when he started eating food again. Kevin has struggled with weight issues since he was about 13 years old, and in 2020 he was 59 years old at that time. Their health journey initially started with just a low carb diet, cutting out things like bread, chips, tortillas, sugary things, but quickly introduced intermittent fasting. Initially, they worked on keeping total carbs below 100 grams per day and fasting 12-14 hours per day. A few months in and they had lowered total carbs to about 50 per day and were regularly fasting about 16 hours per day. Unfortunately, they had not heard about clean fasting yet, so they were definitely not doing that. Between August of 2020 and July of 2021, they lost a combined total of about 150 pounds. Rindi losing 40 and Kevin losing 110. From July 2021 to present, they haven't lost any more weight, but their bodies continue to experience recomposition and their clothing sizes have changed without any weight loss happening. They are more active and have more energy now than they did ten years ago. Fasting is definitely the plan for the rest of their lives and Rindi is no longer pre-diabetic. The Fasting Highway News. I am the third son of three boys born in 1961 (the three youngest in diapers at the same time). We were a typical family and as we grew my mother really became a great cook. Her specialties were homemade breads, cookies, cakes, pies, and our favorite Swedish Tea Rings. Most of the time what she produced would only last a few hours unless she hid them high in the pantry. There was always plenty to eat and being the little chunky one, seconds were normal and always room for dessert. We were always active playing outside from sunup to sundown, riding our bikes, playing wiffle ball in our backyard "stadium", and "kick the can" until it was time for bed. As I got older, we got involved in organized sports. In the fall we played football, in the winter it was basketball, and then throughout the summer baseball. In the 8th grade I was introduced to weight training for football which became my favorite sport. I do remember my mom commenting at times that I needed to watch what I ate (portion control) and then offer me a piece of pie or whatever she had made for dessert. There was always dessert! Everything changed in my mid-twenties when my metabolism changed. I was putting on a few extra pounds even though I remained highly active with cycling, golfing, and adult fast pitch softball. I was introduced to my first weight loss program through a friend, and I only remember it was a type of tea product (I don't remember the name of the company). That didn't work and soon after was introduced to Body Wise, which didn't work. Tiring of MLM's I began to explore other diets, here are a few.... Beverly Hills Diet, Fit for Life, South Beach Diet, Atkins, Keto, and the entire store-bought shakes and bars. Then I got married and the next thing you know I'm over 300 lbs. A friend began posting on Facebook some amazing results that he was having (dropping 100+ pounds) and I gave him a call. I was desperate and needed help, so I began doing the Medifast program through Take Shape for Life. In 4 1/2 months I dropped 85 pounds and began coaching others to do the same. Not only was I losing weight I was creating a good income, enough to consider giving up my remodel business. Thank God I didn't. After a year of eating 5 of the soy-based meals per day I began to suffer debilitating gallbladder attacks. Soon after that I had to stop the program all together, have my gallbladder removed and the weight came right back. Years later I met up with good friends Stephen and Rachel Bush and she told me how she had just lost 50+ pounds doing IF. I was intrigued and they told me to read TFH and that changed the game!! I started on 8/1/22 and within 3 weeks I was down 15 lbs. I am now down 25 lbs. in 6 weeks. What I love about IF is the freedom and the guiltless ability to tweak things as you go and really learn how your body responds to what I put or not put into it. Oh, and the greatest thing is that it is free and we're saving money at the grocery store!!! The Fasting Highway News. Tracey Dixon-Neale is a 43-year-old Mum of 4 living in the small farming community of Onewhero in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. As an 11-year-old girl Tracey was sexually assaulted by a family friend which was prolonged by a yearlong court case. In the following years her stepmother left her and her father, she dropped out of high school and eventually moved in with her mother. As her weight started to climb her mother suggested trying the diet pill Duromine. After some time on diet pills, Tracey was offered Speed and Methamphetamine. This eventually spiraled out of control and led to a crippling addiction which spanned over the course of a few years. With the love and support of her now husband Tracey got clean and has remained clean for over 19 years. Shortly after getting back on track Tracey became pregnant with her first child. Two weeks after finding out she was pregnant her father was diagnosed with terminal Cancer. After nursing her father and best friend through his illness and following his death her weight started to climb again. After two more children, enduring the loss of two babies and welcoming her fourth and final child, Tracey's weight was at an all-time high of 115kgs. (253 pounds) At a Doctor's appointment her general practitioner suggested she try Intermittent Fasting. She went home, googled Intermittent Fasting and started that night. In the two and a half years since then she has not missed a single fast and so far, has managed to lose over 43kg. (95 pounds) Tracey has gone from having a self-proclaimed 'allergy to exercise' to joining the gym as a reward for losing her first 40kg. She now enjoys daily cardio on the cross trainer/elliptical machine and daily weight/strength training. She is also a moderator on The Fasting Highway. Tracey's relationship with food has completely changed over the past two and a half years although she still remains a passionate Cook and Baker. She is focused and determined that she will happily remain a Faster for the rest of her life and help educate as many people as she can along the way. The Fasting Highway News. Jenni Zielke, 61, lives in Green Valley, Arizona, in the United States, about 30 miles from the Mexican border with her husband Larry. Jenni and her husband are originally from Wisconsin and only moved to Arizona in 2019, where they are partially retired. Jenni's career in Human Resources for manufacturing plants has meant working intimately with other people and their careers. This has been both a blessing and a curse, as Jenni navigated her own journey as a Highly Sensitive Person in a leadership role. Being partially retired, Jenni had more time on her hands, when she could eat more and become unhealthier, or find a new life. The new life she found is IF. Jenni was diagnosed 10 years ago with: T2D, Non-Alcoholic-Fatty-Liver, high BP, and diverticulosis. She also had intense joint pain in her feet, knees, hips, and neck. Jenni has been overweight since puberty. She remembers at 12 years old, seeing the boys wrestling team's weights posted in the hallway at school. This was the first time she realized her weight was way higher than the highest weighted boys older than her. Since then, Jenni continually gained weight up to her highest of 247 lbs/112 kgs. As a child, Jenni was often reminded she was overly sensitive, which she grew up believing was a character flaw. It is only through IF, that Jenni was able to fully appreciate her people-pleasing sensitivities were literally feeding her food addiction. Most importantly, The Fasting Highway has provided Jenni the tools to appreciate the blessings of being a highly sensitive person. With the help of TFH, Jenni is finally able to be sensitive to her own emotional needs. Jenni refers to herself as a recovering people-pleaser and works daily to keep her emotions separate from her food relationship. Jenni has found a supportive home in TFH group, along with new daily practices to support her new life as an IF'er. 61 years old 5'6” HW 247 lbs/112 kgs SW 225 lbs/102 kgs CW 181 lbs/82 kgs GR maybe 170-175 lbs/77-79 kgs The Fasting Highway News. Florence lives in LA with her husband and 4 children. She's from the UK, but was partly raised in Spain where she met her husband who is Peruvian. Florence trained as an opera singer, and now is the Publisher and Co-Founder of an arts and culture magazine in LA. In common with many IFers, Florence has struggled with her weight since she was a child/pre-teen and spent all of her adult years trying different diets and ‘lifestyle changes'. After each baby she would retain most of the pregnancy weight and even gain more in the first year postpartum! After baby number 4 in 2018 she reached her highest weight and after a lifetime fighting with food and dieting, assumed she just had to accept it. Then Covid-19 hit. Florence got some sort of respiratory infection in April 2020, which may or may not have been Covid, but it suddenly became clear to her that she wasn't going to allow her kids to become motherless from only one pre-existing condition - being obese. Florence had dabbled in IF for a month the previous summer to ‘lose some weight' before a trip to visit family because she was ashamed of how overweight she was. But after the trip the pressure was off, then the holidays came, and IF went by the wayside. With the sudden impetus to live to see her kids grown, Florence started her IF journey in earnest in June 2020 and has never looked back. She will never go back to what she now refers to as ‘poisoning herself with food'. Florence originally found IF from a random comment from a friend. It had sounded completely bizarre to her, but she'd looked it up at some point later and joined Gin Stephens' facebook group. From here she found The Fasting Highway and Graeme's supportive community. Being on this sudden determined mission of health in 2020, she jumped straight into OMAD and thanks to the clean fast, found it easy enough. From here she has tried many different protocols, released 70lbs, become a daily runner, tapped into appetite correction, healed her relationship with food, and has settled into an intuitive flexibility with her IF. My name is Keith McDonald and I am currently living in Vernon,BC, Canada. . I have struggled with weight since the age of 4! My basic reason to diving into fasting started July 2019, I was in the middle of a Celiac Attack as I had a wheat exposure at a friend's house. I was tired of feeling so much pain afterwards. I said, I am just not going to eat. That same day, I went to a thrift store, and found the book “A Guide to Intermittent Fasting, by Dr. Jason Fung” I knew about fasting in the past, as I had heard about it. I said why not, as I am not eating anyways. From that point forward, I learned everything I could about fasting. From July 2019 to Dec 2019 I dropped over 60lbs. Today I have dropped a total of 85lbs from my fasting starting date. My highest weight was November 2008, I was at 317lbs! I have struggled with being overweight my entire life. Keith was on episode 50 of the podcast if you want to hear more of his earlier journey with IF. In this episode we hear keith has been through some very stressful times since he was last on the podcast .Keith shares some great insights into staying on track in stressful times. He also shares his incredible mindset techniques with us in this episode. The Fasting Highway News. My book about my own story The Fasting Highway is available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle. I'm 64 years old, married for 44 years, mom of 2 adult daughters and Grammy to 2 amazing granddaughters, ages 7 and 4. Retired last year after 44 years as an RN in critical care and ER. I live on Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. I enjoy spending time with friends and family (especially my grandluvs!), walking, reading, boating/kayaking/swimming in the summer and snowshoeing/relaxing by the fireplace in the winter. Hoping that retirement will allow more time for traveling and exploring new places. I have vacillated between normal weight and 20-40 lbs overweight most of my adult life since the birth of my second daughter. Having two small children, 14 months apart, working full time opposite shifts of my husband, returning to school for my BSN = STRESS! Many diets tried, usually with success of varying lengths of time. Generally the same pattern…lose the weight to goal/near goal followed by gradual abandonment of an unsustainable commitment to maintain resulting in weight creep back to or above starting weight. Daily walking (3-5 miles) and light weight workouts 3x/week do not compensate for overeating. Discovered IF July 2020…it clicked/resonated…”What is this magic?!” Diminished hunger, mood stability, heightened mental clarity and focus, soaring energy, improved health, pounds and inches melting off, clothing sizes dropping. Started with 16:8 and quickly progressed to 18:6 and 20:4. Soon added meal-less Monday and ultimately 4:3 ADF. Achieved goal weight of 125 by end of 2020; maintaining goal range (115-120) for almost 1 ½ years ~ mostly 5:2 ADF. I weigh daily and track weekly average to keep me accountable, adjusting my fasting schedule as needed. Graeme Curries phrase “Vigilance without Obsession” is my maintenance mantra. Family support has been critical to my success. My husband, daughters and sonin-law all do some form of IF; collectively we have lost about 270 lbs. In addition, the IF podcasts, books and FB groups provide immeasurable support and guidance. My Stats Height 5'4 (162.56 cm) SW 161 Pounds (73 kG) GW 125 Pounds (56.7 Kg) CW 118 Pounds (53.5 Kg) Maintenance Goal Range. 115-120 Pounds (52-54.4 Kgs) Karen The Fasting Highway News. Sarah Kull is a New Zealand Registered Nurse. She has been working with intermittent fasting for many of her clients since early 2018, in particular, to support those with Type 2 Diabetes or obesity related health concerns. Sarah has been working in General Practice for over 18 years and as such has a background in chronic care management and diabetes as well as the many health risks associated with obesity. With a growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity related health issues in NZ, Sarah was looking at alternatives to the old “calories in vs calories out” advice that has not made an impact on global health since its inception. She came across the work of Dr Jason Fung, a Canadian nephrologist and world leading expert on intermittent fasting for type 2 diabetics. Having been taught throughout her career that type 2 diabetes is a long term, chronic disease that worsens with time, the results from Dr Fung's work was phenomenal. Sarah went on to look at intermittent fasting as a solution to New Zealand's growing crisis and so spent time researching and learning about fasting as an option in her work. Now with over 4years experience in working with clients and intermittent fasting, Sarah not only has a fantastic knowledge base on IF, but she also has some phenomenal and life changing stories and case studies to show the incredible health benefits that come with IF. From complete reversal of type 2 diabetes, dramatic weight loss, improvement in fatty liver and blood pressure to improved sleep, wellbeing and energy the results speak for themselves. Sarah continues to work in a couple of clinics in South Auckland supporting many patients to start their IF journey and improve their health outcomes. She also runs a Facebook group with over 6000 members and growing daily as well as running courses for fasting education and support for the general public as well as seeing private clients. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys Pilates, horse riding and is the CEO for a medical charity in her local community and of course, she practices intermittent fasting! Sarah has two young children and enjoys camping and spending time with friends and family. The Fasting Highway News. I live in Niverville, Manitoba, Canada which is around a ½ hour drive south from Winnipeg. I am turning 50 soon. I am a single dad of two girls – Ashley (20) and Samantha (16). I have lost weight 3 times in my life before I tried intermittent fasting. Right after high school I lost around 20 pounds and quickly gained it back. At 30 years old I lost around 50 pounds and kept it off for about a year. At 40 years old I lost around 75 pounds and kept it off for about 5 years. Even though each time I became more successful in maintaining the weight loss for longer, maintaining has been my biggest battle. Each time I had success in weight loss in the past it was from a low-calorie diet and exercise. In 2016 - 2021 I slowly gained my weight back. I tried many times to get back on track but was unable due to many stresses I was struggling with. During this time, I missed work for over half a year and wasn't mentally able to return to my regular shift work position until February 2020. I was convinced that I would be able to maintain my weight and health for the rest of my life and felt like a failure when I gained a lot of it back. To be honest that period in my life with stress and mental struggles were just too overwhelming. I had the most incredible support team during this time. My girlfriend, mom, dad, sister, daughters, friends, co-workers, employer, and just simply time have allowed me to re-build and be able to focus again on my health. So, I attempted to try a 4th time to lose weight with the addition of the fear of not being able to maintain it. So, the 4thtime I attempted to lose weight I did it with a much different approach than low calorie and exercise. In early January 2021 I started off doing strict clean keto. I tracked everything and really focused on consuming less than 20 grams of carbohydrates daily. I was concerned that this would not be sustainable for me, but I was desperate and needed change. After a few months of practicing clean strict keto, I developed a much different experience towards hunger. I felt the most in control of hunger than any other time in my life. I stumbled across a few articles that mentioned intermittent fasting and then researched it further. I listened to every audiobook I could find on the subject and started right away. I soon went into a 2-hour eating window daily. It was a seamless transition. I started out clean fasting right from the beginning. I consider myself an intermitted faster and no longer consider myself keto.(more in the podcast) The Fasting Highway News. Jacqui is from sunny south Florida, has been married 17 years and is currently a stay at home mom to three young daughters. Jacqui was put on her first diet by a doctor at 11 years old. This started a life long battle of weight. Decades on and off diets all while gaining more and more weight while losing self esteem and confidence. In 2010 she thought she found the answer to health and happiness when she was cast on a weight loss reality show. While she did lose a great deal of weight on the show, it was by over exercising and severely limiting calories. This did lead to a smaller body but keeping it off was a daily challenge and she did not feel her best. She was continually in a binge/restrict cycle which took it's toll mentally and physically. She knew there had to be something more to the puzzle. She spent the next years of her life trying to figure out true health. This journey led her to Intermittent Fasting. The Fasting Highway News. I have been married for almost twenty years to a wonderful, kind-hearted man of German/Italian descent and we have three teenage kids: two daughters and a son. A few of my favorite pastimes are gardening, photography, traveling, flower arranging, taking walks in nature, reading, learning foreign languages, and just spending time with my family. I have also always loved cooking and for a few years was an avid baker and cake decorator too. Being a true foodie at heart and preparing and indulging in decadent meals and desserts all the time, weight management was always an issue for me. Considering I am only five feet tall, I don't have the luxury of carrying a lot of weight without it "showing" easily. To put it shortly, trying to become fit was a major struggle. I also told myself I loved food too much to be able to lose any weight and keep it off long term. Additionally, being pregnant three times within five years and not fully getting rid of the "baby weight" three times in a row compounded my weight problem. Eventually, I managed to reach obesity by the age of 43. I had given up trying, I didn't even own a scale anymore and had no clue what I weighed. I knew, however, that my clothing size had been steadily climbing up: from 6 to 8, to 10, to 12, reaching 14 in the summer of 2019. Then, that Christmas I ended up having to visit an orthopedist for a frozen shoulder and needed to be weighed in the doctor's office. I was shocked to find out I had reached 172lbs! I was heavier than my six-foot husband who weighed 168lbs at the time. At that moment, I knew I had to do something, soon. I happened to mention my health concerns with a family member over the Christmas holidays and he shared that he had done intermittent fasting that same year. He had successfully lost 35lbs doing IF and suggested I try it out too. I was intrigued. I had free time because I was on winter break from school, so I spent a few days watching YouTube videos on intermittent fasting, researching as much as I could, and decided to give it a try and see how it goes for me. So on January 1st, 2020 I began following a 16:8 IF protocol, eating two meals and a snack between 11AM and 6PM. The rest of the time, I drank different kinds of herbal and fruit teas and water. I April, I read "Delay, Don't Deny" by Gin Stephens and learned about the clean fast, as well as different IF protocols. I switched to strictly black or green tea, which are clean fast approved, and transitioned to a one meal a day lifestyle. I also began to really appreciate food as fuel for my body and started turning my OMAD into a special occasion that is rich in nutrients and a delight for all the senses. By October of that year I had lost 55lbs and have been maintaining that weight loss for over 15 months now. IF has truly been life changing for me! By Susan Oxley Hello, I'm a 52-year-old wife to an amazing man and mommy to two very precious kitty cats. I've always felt that I was extremely blessed to have lived what many would call a charmed life. I grew up in a loving family and had all the opportunities someone could ask for, but like many of us, I found myself struggling with my weight as I made my way into my 30's, 40's, and 50's. Over the years, I tried many diets and exercise regimes that allowed me to lose a good amount of weight (40, 50, even 65 lbs). I found losing weight to be pretty easy because I was good at sticking to whatever calorie restriction/counting plan I adopted. However, eventually, I would tire of the restrictions and/or required exercise and go back to my prior habits regaining the weight and then some. I really tried to hold on to the hope that I would find a solution, one day! I reached a point in the last few years where I was approaching morbid obesity. I was successful in so many other pursuits, marriage, career, friendships, etc. but managing my weight just seemed to be the impossible challenge. A couple of months into the pandemic, on May 25, 2020, I came across the mention of IF and the Delay, Don't Deny book in a Facebook group. I remembered a couple of people I knew in real life that were successful IF-ers. Their stories had planted a seed, but I wasn't ready at the time. It sounded way too hard! But that day, that magical day, I decided to listen to the Delay, Don't Deny book on Audible and so it all began… IF has allowed me to shed 75 lbs from my 5'7” frame. I am very excited to see what the future brings as I continue to practice IF Susan The Fasting Highway News. Jeff Gerken Albany, NY, USA Age 56 Start weight 230 Pounds -14 Kg Began fasting January 2020 Goal weight 165 Pounds-75 Kg reached June 2021 Jeff grew up skinny as a kid, and stayed skinny until about age 25. Always active and in sports, being thin seemed normal, without having to limit any type or amount of food at all. But after age 25, his weight increased, and pants started to seemingly shrink. Jeff tried to stay somewhat active in sports as an adult. He was a ski instructor for a while, and then later a youth soccer coach, but the weight didn't stop increasing. By age fifty, heading toward 230 pounds, it seemed that old age, obesity, and declining health had caught up and it was time to withdraw from any athletic activities and just sit on the couch. Even walks outside became short, infrequent, and labored. Jeff is married to Amy, and they have a teenage son. There is always plenty of food and snacks in the house. Both Jeff and Amy like to eat, and their son does too. The son stays naturally skinny and athletic just like Jeff used to (but no longer can), eating unlimited amounts of food. When Jeff started fasting and began to lose weight, then Amy eventually decided to join him and she has also since lost weight through fasting. They now eat one meal a day. Jeff prefers 23/1, while Amy chooses a longer window. Their son of course eats whenever he wants. All health problems went away, and energy increased. This is true particularly for Jeff, but also true for Amy. Both currently enjoy biking and running. In the winter, they also enjoy cross-country skiing The Fasting Highway News. I am a secretary in a high school. Being around students keeps me young at heart, but my body started feeling old, tired, and frumpy. Over the years I put on a few pounds a year and I got to the point where I thought I needed to just accept my weight gain as part of aging. In April of 2021 someone posted a picture of me on Facebook and I couldn't believe it was me! I felt like I really let myself down but didn't know what to do about it. I have never done a “diet plan” as I don't like to cook, and I have no willpower to give up foods I like. So, I was never a Yo-Yo dieter. Around the same time that picture was posted, I randomly found Jason Fung on YouTube and watched his video on Intermittent Fasting. I thought what Dr, Fung had to say made sense and was something I could try. I now look at finding that video not as random at all but maybe a divine intervention! Over the next four months, I would also find Gin Stephens podcast and Graeme Currie with the Fasting Highway podcast and started listening every night. I started reading books on fasting to learn all I could. I fast an average of 19 hours per day with various lengths of eating windows and to my amazement lost 30. pounds in four months and went from a size 12 to a size 6. My physical body now matches my mind and I feel better at 58 than I did at 48. I willingly share with my friends about IF and the fact they don't need to settle in the body they are in, if it is not the one that is making them happy. The Fasting Highway.
