With special guest: Stuart Coupe… in conversation with Bill Kable We have always heard about the sex and drugs of the rock’n’roll lifestyle but few of us get any access to this hidden part of the music industry. Until now Stuart Coupe has lived in the music world for over forty years and by getting the roadies, these unsung heroes, to open up we can find out both the good and the bad sides of this life on the road. Stuart tells us one of his motivations in doing the research and writing his latest book Roadies: The Secret History of Australian Rock’n’Roll was to preserve the stories from the early days because the roadies have had some casualties and he does not want the stories to disappear with the last of the original roadies. Not only does the lifestyle take a toll on the roadies’ physical health but the toll on family life is intense. The roadies will often be away from home for 10 to 11 months of the year because the show has to go on. Podcast (mp3)
Wondering what ever happened to Don Walker and Cold Chisel? Or maybe what songs Don wrote for the band and what his solo stuff is like? Check this out ... Don Walker, hailed as one of Australia's finest songwriters, has built an enduring legacy through his work with Cold Chisel, his solo career, and his literary pursuits. Born in Ayr, Queensland, in 1951, Don spent his formative years on a sugarcane farm, an environment that shaped his deep appreciation for storytelling and the Australian landscape. Despite excelling academically and earning a physics degree from the University of Queensland, music remained his true calling. He began writing songs in his teenage years, influenced by country, blues, and the emerging rock 'n' roll sounds of the 1960s. In 1973, while living in Adelaide, Don co-founded Cold Chisel with Ian Moss, Phil Small, Steve Prestwich, and Jimmy Barnes. As the band's principal songwriter and keyboardist, Don crafted songs that resonated with the Australian experience, blending gritty realism with poetic lyricism. Cold Chisel's music, powered by Don's writing, captured the struggles, triumphs, and heartbreaks of ordinary lives. Tracks like Khe Sanh, a tale of a Vietnam veteran's post-war alienation, and Flame Trees, a nostalgic reflection on love and small-town life, became Australian anthems. Cold Chisel rose to prominence in the late '70s and early '80s, releasing landmark albums such as East and Circus Animals. Don's songwriting was praised for its depth and sophistication, setting the band apart in the Australian rock scene. Despite their massive success, internal tensions led to the band's breakup in 1983. Their farewell concert, The Last Stand, cemented their place in Australian music history. After Cold Chisel's breakup, Don turned his focus to solo projects. He formed the Catfish, releasing the album Unlimited Address in 89, which showcased his ability to blend rock, blues, and jazz influences. He later pursued a solo career under his own name, releasing We're All Gunna Die (1995), Cutting Back (2006), and Hully Gully (2013). These albums highlighted his distinctive narrative voice and ability to explore the darker corners of human experience with wit and insight. Beyond music, Don ventured into literature, publishing Shots in 2009, a memoir that offered a vivid and unflinching look at his life and career. The book was praised for its raw honesty and lyrical prose, further cementing his reputation as a master storyteller. Cold Chisel reunited several times, releasing new music and touring to the delight of their loyal fan base. Don's role in the band remained central, as he continued to pen songs that connected with audiences across generations. His collaborations with other artists, including Slim Dusty, Troy Cassar-Daley, and Tex Perkins, underscored his influence on Australian music. Don Walker's career spans decades of creative output, from iconic anthems to introspective solo works and literary achievements. His ability to capture the essence of Australian life through his art has made him a cultural icon and a revered figure in the nation's musical and storytelling traditions. Don joins us this week to share his incredible story. If you have a comment, query or suggestion for a future guest, please get in touch with me through my website I hope you enjoy this episode!

‘CASSIDY PARIS' AUSSIE ROCKER CHICK CHATS ABOUT HER DEBUT ALBUM ‘NEW SENSATION' ZOOM SPECIAL EVENT ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS WITH RAY SHASHO! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Young Australian rocker, Cassidy Paris released her debut album, “New Sensation” on December 8th. Cassidy has a very bright future ahead of her. Raised on classic hard rock and inspired by female rockers such as Lzzy Hale, Joan Jett, Pink, Pat Benatar & Avril Lavigne, the fiercely determined young woman is on a mission to inspire a new generation of younger fans to not only listen to Rock ‘n' Roll but pick up a guitar instead of a phone. At just 20 years old, Cassidy has released two sold out eps – “Broken Hearted” & “Flirt”, while having performed multiple live shows all over her home country of Australia and has now unleashed her first solo record on the international markets via Frontiers Music Srl. At the age of 11, Cassidy met singer songwriter Paul Laine (ex-Danger Danger, The Deviant's), who developed a unique mentoring role. Paul took Cassidy under his wing to help develop her as an artist and songwriter, collaborating with her in songwriting and producing her music. In 2018, she released the song 'Stand', a heartfelt song about ‘standing up for yourself' as a young woman. Cassidy continues to deliver that message, promoting anti-bullying through performances at many schools around Melbourne, Australia and is an active campaigner for the worldwide ‘Metalheads Against Bullying' organization. Her talents have not gone unnoticed by one of the major guitar giants Fender, lending their support by joining forces with Cassidy to bring her on as an endorser of Fender Squier Guitars. Cassidy has also joined the roster of Silverback Touring Agency. Cassidy has also been acknowledged as a semi-finalist for her song writing efforts in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) for Best Rock Song and Best Unsigned Artist. Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado. Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell. It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it's a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well. Dee has done OK though. Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!! Joe Perry at his finest. We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you

It takes a special collection of musicians to even attempt to pay musical homage to one of the greats, let alone recreate a classic album in its 50th year. When that band is the Beatles and the album Let It Be, then things just take on a whole new dimension.Which is why the Australian Rock Collective - Kram (Spiderbait), Darren Middleton (Powderfinger), Mark Wilson (Jet) and Davey Lane (You Am I) - are the perfect, and quite possibly the only people who could pull it off. After successfully recreating Abbey Road previously, the ARC now turn their attention to Let It Be this Friday, September 23 as part of the month long live concert series Night At The Barracks.HEAVY caught up with Mark Wilson for more information."We are going to perform Let It Be, the final released Beatles record, live as it can be heard on the record," he began. "We did a tour earlier this year where we performed that album. It was meant to be a 50th anniversary but that got startled by COVID so we played the 51st anniversary of it. We did so well we started getting people asking us to p[lay festivals and this particular new venture in Sydney Night At The Barracks, which is the old quarantine station and barracks up in Manly on Manly Head there. I have seen photos and it's a beautiful space and they are trying to activate it as a venue."In staying true to the masters who created the original music, Wilson says every attempt will be made to keep the material as close to the way it was recorded as they can."The way we look at it is almost like going through a cycle," he explained. "We use the same equipment - the same guitars, the same amp and effects as close as possible with all the tones and everything to the original and try to recreate that experience of someone listening to the record but obviously performed live."In the full interview, Mark talks more about what to expect, introduces the rest of the band and what they bring, tells some of his favourite Beatles tales, discusses their contribution to music, playing an album start to finish that may have not been intended to be performed as such, future shows and more.
Temperley was born in 1978 in Mosman Park, Western Australia, and grew up in Fremantle. At seven years of age, his name was changed to 'Satyam Kavyen Temperley'—Temperley is his mother's maiden name and 'Satyam Kavyen' means "Poet of Truth". The Temperley family were members of the 'Orange People' (Rajneesh movement) and made trips to India as well Oregon, United States, throughout the early 1980s. Between the ages of seven and 12, Temperley attended the Lance Holt School, a Fremantle community school. At the age of thirteen, he accompanied his mother on a trip to India, where they stayed at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune. It was during this trip that he enrolled in an international alternative boarding school in Devon called Ko Hsuan that is based on the teachings of controversial Indian mystic Osho. Temperley was accepted as a boarder and remained at the school for a year: “That was an amazing place, musically. They had a really good music room. If we had two periods of math, in between we'd run off and jam for 10 minutes. We'd come back and be totally chilled because we'd gotten all that nervous energy out of our systems.” Temperley referred to his time at Ko Hsuan as his "saving grace", and it was there that he discovered a passion for music before he returned to Fremantle and John Curtin High School due to homesickness: “Then I thought I was going to become an actor until I started wagging school and writing songs.” Kav Temperley was frontman, bassist and songwriter of legendary Australian Rock band and 1990's Indie icons, Eskimo Joe. With 6 studio albums under their belts and sales in excess of 750,000, in Australia alone, the band has seen 3 of those albums debut at number 1 on the ARIA charts, with steamroller ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine' shining for a monster 62 weeks in the ARIA Chart Top 50 and “Foreign Land”, from their 4th album ‘Inshalla', bringing home 2 APRA Awards, for Most Played Rock Song on Australian radio and Best Rock Song of 2010.

Adelaide Metalcore Drummer Dylan Di Palo joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Dylan initially wanted to learn guitar, but as his older brother Tyler had already begun to have guitar lessons, he decided to choose another instrument to enable the brothers to jam together. Dylan initially started out on a practice pad when he was 7, and once he had established that he definitely wanted to continue with the drums, his parents then purchased his first set if drums for him when he was 8. Dylan had private lessons initially with 'Whiskey Harbour' drummer Trevor Draper 'Trapper' which eventually led to Dylan's first band 'Sweet Anarchy' opening for some of Adelaide's premium metal bands such as Matterhorn, Whiskey Harbour, Machine Head and on a number of occasions supported their mentor, the great Aussie legend "Swanee". Sweet Anarchy formed when Dylan was 10, after Dylan and his brother met and became friends with Kristy, while they were all participating in 'Weekend Warriors', which is a music program that enables musicians to rediscover music, or discover it for the first time playing with others, whilst being coached and mentored by Australian musical legends. Sweet Anarchy formed after they had participated in the program, the trio were fortunate to receive ongoing mentoring from John Swan 'Swanee'. Dylan joined the band 'Sasha' after meeting his band mates in year 10 on a school trip to Generations In Jazz, whilst whilst attending Marryatville High School. Dylan is also the drummer for SIGNV/S which formed during the midst of the global pandemic (and year 12), and has also joined 'Days Of Deceit' earlier this year. Dylan is currently teaching drums at the 'Australian Rock & Metal Institute' (ARMI), studying for his Bachelor of Music Degree at University, and working part-time as a "tradie" Shop Fitter. Music: "Band It About" theme song was written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. "Shapeshifter" is track 7 off of the SIGNV/S EP "Disgrace", which was independently released on 29/10/2021. Another week, another two Aussie albums! Super stoked to be joined by Tom Gordon & Ray Dalfsen from one of our favourite bands West Thebarton this week to pit one of Ray's favourite albums by Eddy Current Suppression Ring, 'Rush To Relax', against Tom's choice of 'Vessels' by fellow Adelaide outfit Wolf & Cub. Both bands and records have influenced Tom and Ray in more ways than one, and both albums rip. We're throwing it back to the streets of Sydney in 1987 for the third episode of Australian Music Month. The eccentric delivery of Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil on their sixth studio album 'Diesel and Dust' is up against the smoothness of the great Michael Hutchence of INXS, and their monster record 'Kick'! Two all-time classic Aussie bands. Enjoy!

TAHLIA BORG from the Adelaide, South Australian band 'Teenage Joans' joins me this week in The Engine Room to discuss her musical journey which began when she was 8 years old. Tahlia played in various school bands prior to 'Teenage Joans' which is her first working band. 'Teenage Joans' formed in 2018, and are an indie rock, pop, punk rock, rock duo, self-describing their sound as "juice-box punk-pop", comprising of vocalist and drummer Tahlia Borg and vocalist and guitarist Cahli Blakers. The duo rose to prominence with their debut single "By the Way". 'Teenage Jones' was voted "South Australian Best Live Act" in the 2019 National Live Music Awards. They placed first in South Australia's "Heaps Good 50" countdown, which is run by local station play/pause/play in both 2019 & 2020, and they took out first place in triple j's Unearthed High in 2020, with their second single "Three Leaf Clover", which was released in March 2020. Not only does this two-piece powerhouse play beautifully crafted songs that have audiences singing along the first time they hear them, but the songs are as real and important as they are unapologetic. Going from strength to strength, 'Teenage Joans' have already shared stages with the likes of 'Ruby Fields', 'The Hard Aches', 'Clowns' and 'Bec Stevens', just to name a few. In their huge debut year, 'Teenage Joans' were invited to perform at Laneway Festival 2019 as part of the "Girls Rock!" Showcase, and were a highlight performance at A Day Of Clarity 2019. Their debut 5 track extended play, "Taste of Me", which was released on 28 May 2021, has had over 1 million streams! During the interview we discuss Tahlia's early influences, how she met Cahli, what it is like to be a female drummer, the positives and negatives of the Covid-19 pandemic on the band, memorable gig stories, Flinders University studies and the direction that her work will take upon completion, working at 'Music Corner North', the duo's plans for the future, Tahlia's top 3 local drummers, and we end the interview by playing 20 questions in 2 minutes. Brian Mannix is irrepressible. It's a quality that, along with his killer vocals, has helped him become one of the faces of Australian Rock as frontman of the Uncanny X-Men. But even the most irrepressible of us can have our wings clipped by COVID, and Brian is no exception. Luckily, however, he's found plenty of creative endeavours to help keep his mind occupied and his farm calm. Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country. Instagrammers! Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Join us for this info-packed episode with the very chill Ambrose Kenny-Smith of The Murlocs, whose latest album, Bittersweet Demons, is a gorgeous and deeply personal work filled with tales of confronting life's difficulties and working through them to get to the other side -- very apt for our current times. Ambrose is a super hard working musician devoted both to The Murlocs as well as the massively popular King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard, taking him frequently out on the road in the US and worldwide. Ambrose is open and willing to talk about his past struggles as well as the struggles of those around him and we go deep to explore what those friendship connections mean to him and how they inform his work and his own lifestyle choices. Yet Ambrose remains very humble and self-reflective; he is uber-focused on having a well balanced life and values friends over his own self. Hop on aboard the Roadcase bus for this fascinating interview an intriguing human and touring artist, Ambrose Kenny-Smith. Lucky Starr has had an amazing 60 year career. He has had No,1 hit records and was the first Australian Rock n Roll star to gain any real sustained success in the USA. Together with songwriter Geoff Mack, Lucky is best know for his smash hit song I've Been Everywhere, however, Lucky Starr's career is far more than just one hugely successful song. Lucky Starr is still performing today and wowing crowds, just as he was when Rock n Roll first landed on Australian shores in the 1950's. It's December, so as per annual tradition at LTA Headquarters, the episodes are dedicated to discussing the best albums we heard for the first time over the year, regardless of when they were released.I break this up into two episodes.
