May 10th, 2025 shall go down as one of the great days when INXS: Access all Areas was able to meet patrons, listeners and passionate INXS fans from around the globe as we hosted them on our Sydney bus tour and evening gala function. Celebrating our 5th birthday, Bee and I were truly humbled by the level of support, participation and love for what was a little idea in late 2019 that materialized into a fully blown concept in May 2020. So for those unable to attend, Bee and myself aim to bring the essence, events and vibe of the entire day to you through this episode. With audio acknowledgements from Ollie Olsen's Manager Bruce Butler, Sean Dickson (Soup Dragons) amongst many, we are truly humbled. With special guests Richard Simpkin ( Michael in Pictures) and the greatest INXS cover band, Don't Change; guests were astonished and blown away by INXS' very own Kirk Pengilly who turned up and stayed till the very end mingling and embracing the night. Shout out to all those who traveled so far to join us and thankyou to all the raffle, auction and prize winners with fantastic merchandise and INXS treasures going home with the lucky bidders. So as we continue to push the band's cause to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, we were excited to have the event acknowledged in the latest edition of Rolling Stone Magazine some few days later and believe with your support and patronage, we can lobby for true musical justice and attend as a collective the 2026 Induction ceremony knowing we did our bit. INXS legends Jon Farriss and Kirk Pengilly join Gleeso on Triple M Nights to celebrate 40 years of Listen Like Thieves, the album that catapulted the Aussie rock icons to global stardom. First released in 1985, Listen Like Thieves marked the beginning of INXS’ game-changing collaboration with producer Chris Thomas — the man determined to bottle the band’s raw, live energy in a studio setting. “He was fascinated by how powerful we were live, and how we hadn’t captured that yet on record,” explains Kirk Pengilly. The result was a sonic turning point that redefined their sound and laid the groundwork for their future success with albums like Kick and X. Jon and Kirk also reflect on the 40th anniversary reissue, which has been meticulously remixed by Giles Martin — son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin — bringing new depth and clarity to the classic album. In a poignant moment, the boys open up about revisiting rare tapes and old recordings of their late bandmate Michael Hutchence, sharing the emotion and nostalgia of hearing his iconic voice again.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With INXS refreshed and revitalized post Rock Star INXS, the band entered the Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, California. With a brand new front man, JD Fortune to record and mix their 11th studio release aptly named Switch, further mixing was completed both at MixStar Studios at Virginia Beach, Virginia and Sphere Studios in London, UK. Nearly 8.5 years since their final recording with Michael Hutchence on Elegantly Wasted, the band wasted no time between September-November 2005 laying down 11 tracks that would represent the dawn of a new era for the band and be the precursor to a World Tour in 2006. Produced by Guy Chambers, formerly with World Party and main Co-Writer with Robbie Williams, he and Andrew Farriss were able to unite and combine for an album that sounded fresh, vital, progressive but with that typical INXS DNA underpinning its sound and sonics. Today, we examine Side One's 5 tracks spearheaded by the international hits that were Pretty Vegas and Afterglow whilst also discussing the narrative, expectations and experiences of other rock bands that have lost front man over their careers whether it be by departure or unfortunate passing. So as the famous line from George Michael's second album denoted, “listen without prejudice” and revel in a time when INXS challenged themselves, the critics and the wider fan base with a new singer, sound and a bunch of songs that heralded a new era for them! In the latest episode of INXS: Access all Areas, Bee and I get back to musical basics and compare and contrast our individual top 10 sublime INXS hook moments that leap out of the speakers and hit our collective hearts with passion and purpose. What is a hook, I can hear you say? A hook is a musical idea, often a short riff, passage or phrase, that is used in music to make a song appealing and to catch the ear of the listener. With over 250 songs recorded, narrowing down a list to only 10 each was a daunting task. That aside, our final lists unearth some interesting gems, deep cuts, predictable favourites and a few unexpected left turns making the whole exercise, a fun and rewarding experience. With a jam packed news, an ode to birthday boy Kirk Pengilly and some new competitions launched, we urge you to tune in to your only 100% weekly dedicated INXS podcast! Henry talks with Stuart Lloyd about his new book Started Out Just Drinking Beer: the Mental As Anything Story. The riotous rollercoaster ride of Mental as Anything, one of Australia's greatest bands from 1976-2019. The Mentals went from the top of a pool table to the top of the charts. Enjoy the untold stories behind Aussie classics like: Live It Up, Too Many Times, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too?, Berserk Warriors, Egypt, The Nips are Getting Bigger, and a whole lot more. Plus tales from the road as told by Greedy, Martin, Bird, Pete & Reg — and a star-studded cast including Colin Hay, Richard Gottehrer, Mark Opitz, Jeremy Fabinyi and Wreckless Eric — in this access-all-areas official biography. ‘Love it!!! Brought up lots of memories. Thoroughly enjoyable.' – Kirk Pengilly, INXS. ‘This book gives us a big gulp of one of Australia's most uniquely talented and popular bands.' – Anthony (Tony) Field, The Cockroaches, The Wiggles. ‘Stuart Lloyd captures the alchemy that saw Australian bands flourish from the arid plains of our suburban lives. I loved the Mentals and I love this book.' – Dave Warner, author, Countdown: The Wonder Years, and 25 Years of Mushroom Records. ‘Takes us behind the showbiz curtain. A deep-dive beyond the colourful personalities and the larrikin-esque cheerfulness of a uniquely Australian band who have been the soundtrack of our lives for decades. Had me glued to each page.' – Jane Gazzo, music journalist and broadcaster. ‘An extraordinary and horrific portrait of five butchers who were country-killed specialists, shot through with black humour and near-naked burlesque attire.' – H. G. Nelson, comedian and broadcaster. This conversation was broadcast on 97.7FM Casey Radio in November 2023. Produced by Rob Kelly.
On the 46th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review rock band INXS' 1987 monster album, "Kick." Kick was the Australian band INXS' 6th solo studio album. The album catapulted INXS in superstardom, especially in the United States, where the album went 6x platinum and also selling over 20 million albums worldwide. The album also reached number 3 on the US Billboard album charts and had 4 top ten singles, with one of them reaching number 1. INXS was led by one of the most charismatic frontman of the 1980's, Michael Hutchence. Whose voice, style and sexiness was made for MTV and the 1980's. The band features three of the Farriss brothers, Andrew on keyboards and guitar, Jon on drums and Tim on guitars along with Kirk Pengilly on guitars and sax and Garry Gary Beers on bass. The album was produced by Chris Thomas. Kick featured undeniable hits made for the 1980's radio and MTV like, New Sensation, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart and the number one hit, Need You Tonight. The album and tour made INXS and Michael Hutchence darlings of the era. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 44 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. On today's pod I have special guest ‘Alex Williams,' the actor tasked with the intimidating honour of playing ‘Shane Warne' in ‘Warnie.' The two-part drama series ‘Warnie' will air over two nights on Sunday, June 25 at 7pm and Monday, June 26 at 7:30pm on ‘Channel 9' and ‘9Now.' Warnie looks back on the life and times of cricketing legend ‘Shane Warne' and I will say it is not just for cricket fans. Williams is no stranger to portraying real-life personalities, with his credits including the role of ‘Julian Assange' in ‘Underground' and ‘Kirk Pengilly' in ‘Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS.' I will say that there is a lot of controversial opinions in the media and I chose not to mention ‘Simone' or their children - as I didn't think it was fair on them or of ‘Alex.' I will talk about the decision to take on such an iconic role and if this mini series is too soon. We will hear how ‘Alex' created the essence of ‘Shane Warne' and how he would get into character. ‘Alex' will talk about his relationship with the sportsman and what he learnt playing the role! Plus we will get plenty of exclusives from behind the scenes of ‘Warnie.' Including why audiences should give this series a go.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Di & Nicola chat with Australian music and entertainment royalty, Lizzi Morrissey. Lizzi started out as a dancer, a former Miss Australia contestant, and in the late 70s she began working in the music industry alongside artists such as Paul Kelly, Split Enz, Jimmy Barnes and Joe Cocker. Lizzi then trained as an actor, performing in theatre and musicals, but her career took a turn when she met her husband, talent agent Mark Morrissey and joined his business. Lizzi went on to nurture the careers of some of the biggest Australian stars. Lizzi also has a gift for PR and organising events and she now runs her own creative management and public relations company, MissusM Creative. Lizzi is a mum to 2 beautiful daughters and a wonderful friend to many, including Di and Nicola. In this chat, Lizzi talks about what it was like working in the music industry in the 70s and 80s and how she started organising gigs all the way back in her high school days. We hear the story of a fundraising event that Lizzi organised as a teen that went wrong, but how her work ethic and ambition ultimately turned it around and led to her first real job offer. Lizzi's career journey is incredibly interesting and inspiring, and we hear all about the twists and turns along the way, the gift Lizzi had for bringing a sense of family and community to Morrissey Management and how she's bringing her unique PR with a heart to her new business, MissusM Creative. Lizzi also does a lot for charity and she shares what it was like doing a 21 day walk along the Great Wall of China, raising money for Olivia Newton-John's Wellness & Research Centre with the likes of Cliff Richard, Joan Rivers, Layne Beachley, Kirk Pengilly, Ian Thorpe, James Reyne, Scott Wolf and of course, Olivia herself. This special episode is dedicated to Lizzi's dad - the extraordinary Charlie Dayney. INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess") were an Australian rock band, formed as the Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. In 1984, INXS had their first number-one hit in Australia with "Original Sin". The band achieved international success in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s with the hit albums Listen Like Thieves, Kick, and X, and the singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight" (the band's only US number-one single), "Devil Inside", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Suicide Blonde" and "New Sensation". After Hutchence's death on 22 November 1997, INXS made appearances with several guest singers, and toured and recorded with Jon Stevens as lead singer, beginning in 2000. In 2005, members of INXS participated in Rock Star: INXS, a reality television series that culminated in the selection of Canadian J.D. Fortune as their new lead singer. Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin replaced Fortune as lead singer in 2011. During a concert on 11 November 2012, INXS stated that the performance would be their last, although they did not announce the band's permanent retirement. INXS won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, including three for "Best Group" in 1987, 1989 and 1992; the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. INXS has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia's highest selling music acts of all time.Complete setlist - 5/18/23Corey Hart - Never SurrenderCommentaryGenesis - Man On The CornerDon Henley - The Boys Of SummerTina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Beyond Thunderdome)CommentaryINXS - The One Thing (extended)INXS - Don't ChangeCommentaryINXS - Here Comes IIINXS - Original Sin/commentaryINXS -What You NeedINXS - I Send A MessageINXS - To Look At YouCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side AGuns In The SkyNew SensationDevil InsideNeed You Tonight/MediateThe Loved OneCommentaryINXS - The Album "Kick" Side BWild LifeNever Tear Us ApartMystifyKickCalling All NationsTiny DaggersCommentaryINXS - Disappear INXS - Suicide BlondeRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on April 17th and 18th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess
In the highlight from 'Behind The Hits - Michael Hutchence: INXS' we find out about the most challenging era of their career. INXS was a household name in the 80s and early 90s. However, in 1992, the band decided to change direction with their album "Welcome To Wherever You Are." The album was a departure from their previous sound, and although it reached No.1 in the UK and No.2 in Australia, it only peaked at No.16 in America. Their next record, "Full Moon Dirty Hearts," was released during the peak of the grunge era and shed even more fans. During this time, INXS staged the Concert for Life in Sydney, a charity event that received backlash from the press for its perceived extravagance. INXS member Kirk Pengilly spoke about the event, saying it was a taste of the classic Australian Tall Poppy Syndrome after their major international success.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week I mentioned that perhaps INXS “KICK” was in contention for the title of “perfect album”. With no less than four top 10 hits, with at least one other single in the top 40, “KICK” was a juggernaut, and evidence of a band fully coming into their own.Michael Hutchence. Andrew, Jon, & Tim Farriss. Kirk Pengilly. Garry Gary Beers. They were all at their creative peak with this record! Now, I'm not sure if the “perfect record” exists, but I needed to test this record and see how it ranks. So, I called in some help for this one!My brother-in-law, Daniel Fields joins me all the way from the great state of Texas and we do a track by track review of “KICK” and give our own grades for each track. We're talking old school A - F grading scale, here.Is it perfect? Average? An utter failure? Listen to the episode and find out how it fares. Also…GO LISTEN TO “KICK”!Send me your ideas for what albums should be up for the “perfect album” debate, and I may use your suggestion on a future episode.Make sure to “LIKE” & “SUBSCRIBE” today!

In today's episode, we are chatting with Kirk Pengilly. Kirk is one of the founding members of INXS, one of Australia's most notorious and successful rock bands. They've sold over 80 million albums worldwide, collected countless awards and trophies for their work from all over the globe, including 3 Grammy nominations, and have been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In this chat we talk about Kirk's early years and family life, as well as what led him to meeting and forming the band. The story of INXS is one of resilience and incredibly strong friendship. From late night recordings after their work at car yards all day, to playing in front of hundreds of thousands of people, INXS certainly was not an overnight success. We speak about the gruelling years of touring and churning out music, as well as the tenacious attitude of the band and how often they needed to evolve after events like Michael's death. Kirk has lived a full life, and now has found peace in the more simple aspects of life. In today's episode, we are chatting with Layne Beachley. Layne's dedication to success made her the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles - and the only woman to have 7 in total. She is an officer of the order of Australia, Chair of Surfing Australia, and founder of the Awake Academy. In this chat Layne speaks openly about some experiences she faced as a child, like being conceived through assault and later adopted, that shaped her into the fierce competitor that we came to know. Layne is a powerhouse of what it means to be determined and driven. She is vivacious and cheeky. Layne and Gus share a passion for mental fitness and a big takeaway from this chat are the lessons that Layne has learnt about where we focus our own time and energy. Of course, this episode wouldn't be complete without talking about Layne's marriage with INXS member Kirk Pengilly. Without mentioning any spoilers, we'll tell you that it wasn't exactly love at first sight. Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week: Glaucoma. Matthew and Sam see this episode of Studio 1 most important show on the Studio 1 calendar. Glaucoma is an eye disease that can lead to permanent irreversible sight loss. Right now 150,000 Australians are suffering from glaucoma and they don't even know it. Today, for the third year in a row, we speak to Kirk Pengilly of INXS about the time he nearly lost his sight to glaucoma at the age of 28. In what has become a bit of a tradition/running joke, Matthew and Kirk exchange music recommendations. To give us a rundown on glaucoma - what it is, what it does and what we can do to find out if we have it - we speak to Associate Professor Dr Ashish Agar, who is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. We also talk to Shannon Davis, a 45 year old husband and father-of-two and, until recently, high-flying senior partner at PWC. He tells the shocking story of how he suddenly discovered he had become legally blind because of glaucoma without really realising there was anything seriously wrong with his sight. -- If you've been affected by any of the issues in this week's show - or if there's something you feel we need to talk about on future shows, please do get in touch. It was a true joy hearing from Kirk last week and are excited to elaborate on his journey in the second part of our deep dive. In this episode, we get to know the real Kirk away from the limelight of an international rock star. Humble community activist, health/vision ambassador, and devoted husband to wife Layne Beachley. We elaborate on the famous Kirk diaries, the infamous stumble off stage (thanks Michael), and excitedly share patron questions direct to Kirk with excellent answers to follow! On this week's show… 300,000 people in Australia have glaucoma - an eye disease that can lead to permanent blindness. 50% of those people - that's 150,000 people - don't know they have it. You could be one of them, Have we got your attention? Matthew's guests on this week's show explain what glaucoma is, how you can find out whether you have it (it's non-invasive and doesn't hurt), what to do if you do end up getting it (take it seriously, but don't panic) and what life is like after diagnosis. "Love Makes The World" Well, he may live on a remote farm now, but back in the 80s there was nothing remote about Andrew Farris. The guy was everywhere. The Perth-born/Sydney-raised musician got his start in a band called Doctor Dolphin, but you probably know him best from his second band: INXS A multi-instrumentalist adept at piano, harmonica, and guitar, Farris and his brothers Tim and Jon along with Michael Hutchence, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers were at one point the biggest band on the planet. And that was at a really competitive time—you had U2, Depeche Mode, R.E.M., and DURAN DURAN--and INXS at their peak were bigger than all of them. They put out ten records with Hutchence and two others after his death and they were elected to the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Pals since high school, Farris and Hutchence were a lethal songwriting combination and Farris really was the sonic architect of INXS’s sound. Not only that, but he co-wrote all but one of the band's top-40 hits in the U.S. Farris went on to produce for everyone from GUN to Yotu Yindhi and Jenny Morris and he snagged a Producer of the Year award at the ARIAS in 1990. He was inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016 and in 2020 he was awarded with the Member of the Order of Australia. His new EP "Love Makes The World” is a country-tinged offering that’s contemplative, captivating and comforting. It’s a thoughtful blend of rootsy rock and lush acoustic numbers that perfectly capture the wondrous things the world does to the human heart. It’s aching, it’s wistful and it’s utterly lovely work. In this conversation Farriss talks to Alex about the joys of hard work, what it’s like to live in such a remote location and what made him pick up a guitar and write this new batch of such inspired material.

We've all moved and grooved to the sounds of this week's guest, Kirk Pengilly of INXS. Kirk and I have crossed paths a few times over the years and it was nice to sit down and deep dive into his life as an 80s rock god. But I think Kirk is best described by my dad "he'd fit in at the Carcoar pub".

Layne sits down with Mia Freedman to discuss everything from her marriage to INXS guitarist and sax player Kirk Pengilly, to losing her mum and then finding out she was adopted to the mistakes she made while touring the world. Seven-time world surfing champ Layne Beachley and her rockstar INXS saxophonist beau Kirk Pengilly have some STORIES to tell Matthew Hayden about food. Both grew up on the water and then took vastly different paths in life and learning about food. Hear what Layne learned from bingeing junk food on the pro surf tour in the eighties, and about Kirk dining on the wildest cuisine in the world's poshest restaurants with INXS. They've come a long way from Vegemite sandwiches and cooking roasts in a car yard.

Originally named The Farriss Brothers when they formed in 1977, brothers Andrew Farriss (keyboards and Founder), Jon Farriss (drums), and Tim Farriss (guitar) joined with bassist Garry Gary Beers, saxophonist/guitarist Kirk Pengilly, and front man Michael Hutchense not long after high school. They took the name INXS at the suggestion of members of the band Midnight Oil, whom they were supporting at the time. Shabooh Shoobah is their third studio album, and the first to be released worldwide. While it was released in October 1982, the rise of INXS can be tracked to their performance in the 1983 US Festival on “New Wave Day,” May 28th, 1983. This is the day they made it into the US top 30 with “The One Thing.” The unique name of the album comes from a rhythm sound in the song “Spy of Love.”INXS was one of the many bands who made it big on MTV, largely on the photogenic appeal of Michael Hutchense. Hutchense and Andrew Farriss met in high school when Farriss broke up a fight in which Hutchense was participating. This album features the band in its “New Wave phase,” with lots of bold synthesizer and a killer sax.We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane from the early days of MTV. Don't ChangeThis last track on the album has lots of energy, and sounds like a cooler version of A Flock of Seagulls. The video shows the band singing in a commercial garage, and Andrew Farriss's keyboards are placed vertically on the wall. MTV was very new, and bands were still working out their looks for the video age.Spy of LoveThis is a deeper cut off the album which has a Caribbean feel, with the keyboards reminiscent of a steel drum. “I don't mind but what I say, Use that magic for better days.”Golden PlaypenAnother deep cut off the album, and this one reminds us of Athens band REM. “Tossed out of the golden playpen, Beating the drum of pain and pleasure.”The One ThingThis track is the big hit from the album. Rob says this is an iconic song from his high school days, one of his top 5 of all time. This song was their first MTV Video. Check out Kirk Pingilly on the sax, and the synthesizer work. It is a positive, high energy, driving song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Parade of the Ewoks” by John WilliamsWe pay homage to the polarizing little creatures from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in this entertainment track. STAFF PICKS:Rainbow in the Dark by Ronnie James DioWith his staff pick Wayne brings us - DIO! This is the hit single from the album "Holy Diver." Ronnie James Dio is a pure heavy metal vocalist - a heavy metal version of Neil Young. Many believe this song is a reaction to his tumultuous days in the group Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore.Photograph by Def LeppardBruce brings us the lead single off Pyromania, Def Leppard's third studio album. Frontman Joe Elliott describes this song as about “something you can't ever get your hands on.” This was their first hit single. “So wild and free, so far from me. You're all I want, my fantasy!”Bang on the Drum by Todd RundgrenBrian's staff pick hearkens back to the days of 96 Rock in Atlanta, and their “5 o'Clock Whistle.” Rundgren compares this song to “Happy Birthday,” since it is one that everyone knows — but few know the songwriter. “And I get my sticks and go out to the shed and I pound on that drum like it was the boss's head.”She's A Beauty by The TubesRob's pick features San Francisco based The Tubes. Fee (John Waldo) Waybill is their lead singer, and wrote this song inspired by a kiosk outside a massage parlor in the red light district of San Francisco. The kiosk was the size of a phone booth and had a sign that read “pay a dollar, talk to a naked girl.” The song lyrics changed the sign to “talk to a pretty girl,” which was much more accessible to a wider audience! COMEDY TRACK:Galaxy Song by Monty PythonApril 1983 was the month when Monty Python released their third feature film “The Meaning of Life,” and this was one of the songs from that movie. We hope you enjoy it!
Layne Beachley AO is a 7-time world champion, hall of fame surfer who has smashed the records many times over. She is widely regarded as the most successful female surfer in history and is the only surfer, male or female to win six consecutive world titles. In this episode, Layne shares her story from the beginning. Layne experienced the loss of her mother at the age of six, followed by the discovery at 8 years of age, that she had been adopted. This crucially rattled her sense of security and identity, propelling her into success, driven by the underlying need to be loved and accepted for who she was. In the years that followed, Layne experienced two more significant losses and the end of a long-term relationship while competing for World titles and found herself rocked with the emotional repercussions of her history. Despite all of this, Layne has funneled those tough life moments into positive achievements, learning to create balance and a gratitude mindset across the board. Layne shares the ground rules she and husband, INXS rocker Kirk Pengilly have set for themselves and what has made their relationship so successful to date. She also takes us through a very dark period in her life and how Kirk was able to pull her back into the light by offering support and acknowledging the place she had found herself in. However, this conversation is full of the light and positivity that Layne embodies and filled with strategies for managing some of the tougher realities of life. Layne has packaged together the lessons that she has learned and transformed them into her Awake 2 Evolve workshops, driven to helping others to transform their own lives. Stay tuned for Layne's online course The Awake Academy, launching in May. You can find all the details on the workshops at laynebeachley.com and follow Layne on Instagram @laynebeachley. At the age of 16 Layne Beachley became a professional surfer and went on to become the greatest surfer in history securing 7 world titles and has recently just won her 8th world Masters championship. Layne Beachley is widely regarded as the most successful female surfer in history, and is the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles (1998-2003); she went on to win a 7th world title in 2006 before retiring in 2008. In this inspiring conversation with AM Director Kim McKay, Layne reveals the source of her drive to be the best of the best, involving the loss of her mother at age 6 and the revelation of her adoption. She also opens up about the equally strong power of love and her marriage to rock legend Kirk Pengilly. “The fear of abandonment and the fear of rejection is essentially what drove me to become a six-time consecutive world champion. And the reason I differentiate from the seventh is because the seventh title was won in a state of love. So I proved to myself that you can do it in two different ways. “We all experience trauma, we all perceive it in a different way and none of us can control what happens to us, but the one thing we can control is how we respond to it.” This talk took place at 1pm, Tuesday 28 August in the Hallstrom Theatre at the Australian Museum.
The Forward was written by Kirk Pengilly in April 2005. This is a reading from the official Autobiography compiled and written by INXS and Anthony Bozza.
