"Murder ballads are a subgenre of the traditional ballad form dealing with a crime or a gruesome death. Their lyrics form a narrative describing the events of a murder, often including the lead-up and/or aftermath. The term refers to the content, and may be applied to traditional ballads, part of oral culture." -wikipediaEp Links:"Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds' Murder Ballads As Gangsta Rap Album" by Dele Fadele: https://thequietus.com/opinion-and-essays/anniversary/nick-cave-bad-seeds-murder-ballads-review/CONCEPT ALBUM RANKINGS: https://www.supatier.com/tierlist/019a64d9-9691-7ed1-87e9-1fc99161d9c0/tachp-ranked-tierlistOUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2stA2P7pTCOUR MERCH: https://flyoverstatepark.creator-spring.com/OUR YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/flyoverstateparkEVERYTHING ELSE: https://linktr.ee/FlyoverStatePark

Today we're discussing Tender Prey by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This is one of Nick Cave's most legendary albums for the simple fact that it contains "The Mercy Seat," his most famous song (also covered by Johnny Cash). But there's so much more to it. The substance abuse and subsequence chaos behind the scenes, the strange production style, and the eclectic songwriting make this one of Nick Cave's absolute weirdest albums. The musical mind of Barry Adamson was so cinematic he created soundtracks for movies that didn't exist. Until they did. He starts out with the essential post-punk band Magazine, who released some of the best albums the genre had to offer. He was restless though and after time in Visage and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, he committed the music in his head to tape with the solo album, Moss Side Story and never stopped. Barry's music has always had a heavy cinematic quality which lead to him eventually scoring films, of course. Last week he released his new album, SCALA!, which is the soundtrack to the new documentary on the legendary art-house cinema in London which was a gathering place for him and artsy people like him for decades. We get to hear stories about all the stops along the way in his musical journey, working with people like Nick Cave and Midge Ure, growing up bi-racial, and more. Enjoy! "Scala" It's hard to explain everything Barry Adamson did before he was thirty. By then, his resume' was so packed with highlights it was hard to believe there was room for more. But there was. Like, a lot more. Let me explain. The Manchester-born Barry Adamson got his start in music in the late '70s by playing bass for Magazine, a band led by ex-Buzzcock Howard DeVoto. Adamson, who was briefly in the Buzzcocks himself, went on to play with Visage and Luxuria before joining Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Adamson played on legendary Cave albums like From Her To Eternity and Kicking Against The Pricks and from there, he stepped into the Iggy Pop fold and toured with Mr. Pop in '87. By then, Adamson was close to thirty and in many ways, that's the point where he really started to spread his musical wings, realizing he liked being on his own than being one of the guys in a band. From there, Adamson started to explore electronic and dub-fueled soundscapes and he moved effortlessly from strength to strength, releasing classic solo albums like Moss Side Story, the 1992 Mercury Prize nominated Soul Murder and his new one, La Scala. More on that in a minute. Over the course of his winning career, Adamson has played with The Birthday, Party, collaborated with everyone from Pulp's Jarvis Crocker to Billy McKenzie of the Associates, contributed to movie soundtracks like David Lynch's Lost Highway and done remixes for everyone from Depeche Mode to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. His new album La Scala is the original score for the 2023 documentary Scala!!! Or, The Incredibly Strange Rise And Fall Of The World's Wildest Cinema. The film is a stirring and rousing homage to the legendary London arthouse movie theatre and Adamson's inventive score uses elements of jazz, funk and post-punk noir to detail the rise and fall of a building that meant a lot of people whose lives were saved by the freedom and spirit of life in the counterculture. www.barryadamson.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers IG + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Warren is back in the shed and he's found a stack of paper concert tickets. He's decided to start the new year off with a nod to the first "What's in Your Shed?" episodes by unlocking the stories within these palm sized passes. Each one reveals fond memories of gigs gone by and helps our Shed Sessions host to keep track of his life since 1993. It all began with an Elton John and Ray Cooper concert in an emptied out wave pool in Bophuthatswana and finds it's way to a rain soaked Radiohead show in South Park, Oxford and concludes with a Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds concert in Cardiff that got cancelled due to Covid 19. Each ticket is a portal to a very special time and place. Warren invites us to join him as he reminisces about music, family and friends all guided by the shows he went to. The power and influence of music is tangible throughout. It's the perfect prelude to another year which promises to be packed with more recordings of live music and conversation. Thank you for listening.
Arriba l'últim episodi de l'any, l'última crema. Al llarg del programa sona música de Laia Camanyes, Mike Sharpe, Classics IV, Gary Walker and The Rain, Barry Adamson, Massive Attack, Françoise Hardy, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, (Me Llamo) Sebastián, Morphine, The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Frank Zappa, Van Morrison, L. Shankar, Francesco Messina i Iván Ferreiro. La Laia Via ha dissenyat la coberta d'aquest episodi. Interesting people make interesting music. Warren Ellis is in a class of his own. He's a composer, multi-instrumentalist and longtime creative partner of gothic rock poet laureate Nick Cave. For more than 40 years Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have challenged us with narrative-driven music that touches on love, death, and religion. Ellis is also the co-founder of Ellis Park, a sanctuary for wounded animals in Sumatra. He saves the animals, and he says, they saved him. The spirit of transformation runs through the band's latest album, Wild God. Ellis will be back in New Zealand with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds for the first time since 2017 with The Wild God Tour as part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts. They'll be performing two shows in Wellington at the TSB Arena February 5th and 6th.

The loneliness of eternity. The horrors of the 20th century. Nick Cave's hair. Yes, this week Pop Screen is tackling the biggest things possible with Wings of Desire, in which Wim Wenders's observations of Berlin, fondness for the poetry of Rilke and Bad Seeds fandom combined to form one of the most unlikely masterpieces of the 1980s.Join Joe and Graham as they discuss Wenders's wayward, rewarding career and the notes of unexpected reality in this grand fantasy - from Peter Falk's supporting turn as himself to Solveig Dommartin's real-life trapeze skillz. We also talk about the film's sequels and remakes, Claire Denis's talent for novelty casting decisions, which era of Nick Cave's work appeals to us the most, and why every sufficiently highbrow artist needs their own Berlin period. For a more sustained taste of heaven, you should donate to our Patreon, where you'll get a bonus episode of this show every month plus an end-of-month round-up podcast, Last Night..., that isn't available anywhere else. Kid Congo Powers is an iconic punk guitarist, wildly inventive solo artist, author, and storyteller. His resume includes legendary runs playing guitar in Gun Club, the Cramps and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He’s also been doing his own thing for decades, most notably with Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. He’s a prolific recording artist whose discography is super deep, varied, innovative, fun, and screaming for repeat visits. I think rock and roll has become harder to define as the years have advanced, but whatever that definition is, he fits it. Before he played at Beat Kitchen, Kid jumped in the car and talked about: *His prolific output. I mean, music just pours out of him. *The forthcoming release with Naim Amor, “Tuscon Safari” (check out the video for “Surf Sirens,” mentioned in the interview. *Where the next generation of “Kid Congos” is coming from. *Music fandom. *Kid’s history with, and affection for, the Cramps. *The second life of “Goo Goo Muck.” *The horror tip he got from Siouxsie Sioux. *The key to building a band “brand” - bringing fans along into your world. *His must-read memoir, Some New Kind Of Kick. Kid Congo is a true one-of-a-kind, and an easy conversationalist. I left the interview wanting more, and I suspect you’ll feel the same way. Thank you for listening/watching. Adam talks with British musician and photographer Colin Greenwood about playing bass for Radiohead and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, his memories of the crumbling buildings and spooky stately homes where Radiohead recorded OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows, some favourite Radiohead basslines, what it's like to play live with the band, and what people can expect from their forthcoming European shows. It's fascinating to look at the entire creative evolution of an artist - how they started and where they are now. Of course, looking at what's been going on in their life, can feel quite invasive and voyeuristic, like prying into the inner sanctum of life, but hey, all in the name of research! Music and art (although I'm by no means an expert) often feels subjective and open to interpretation and honestly, for me, I love it when I'm challenged to think about what it means to me. This brings me on to relatability. Perhaps it's now an overused word that has been diluted of its relevance and meaning. But is it important for an artist to create work that its audience will find relatable in some way? Will it help the audience make their own interpretations if they can relate to it? Or is speaking with truth and honesty equally or more important? And what about good old fashioned escapism? What does that connection between artist and audience look like? I don't know why the work of my guest today makes me ask these questions! Maybe it's because his work often feels like it is accessing what's in the back of his mind but created in a way that feeds my own interpretations and connects in a way that tunes into my own empathy. His art was described as “loose and raw that straightaway imprints itself on the human imagination”. This is interesting because it is the consistency of that rawness - and honesty - that also runs through his music which again gets my imagination fired up. I hope you enjoy this fascinating chat with James Johnston, who came to prominence in the early 90's with Gallon Drunk and has also played with PJ Harvey, The Bad Seeds, Faust and Lydia Lunch as well as releasing solo and collaborative work of his own. He started painting in 2017 which is just going from strength to strength.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. This week Dave returns as we dive into our bag of covermount CDs and unearth a real gem. If you were buying Kerrang! in August 2002, you might remember issue 918 with The Prodigy on the cover. What you definitely remember is the cover-mount CD that came with it - Hometaping Volume Two, curated by Amen's Casey Chaos. This wasn't your typical corporate compilation of radio-friendly metal and whatever major labels were pushing that month. This was a proper education in underground extremity, compiled by someone who'd been living in the trenches since he was photographed at Black Flag gigs in 1982. Casey wasn't messing about. He whittled down his selection from 60 songs, phoned Henry Rollins and Satyr personally for unreleased tracks, and designed the cover himself. The result was 26 tracks of whiplash-inducing genius that introduced countless metal and punk fans to bands they'd never have discovered otherwise. From Refused's "New Noise" and Iron Monkey's feral sludge to birthday party's pre-Bad Seeds insanity and proper OG punk from Discharge and X-Ray Specs, this was cultural education disguised as a free CD. The fact we're still dissecting every track choice 20+ years later proves Casey achieved something genuinely special - a compilation that worked as both a history lesson and a challenge to dig deeper into the underground. It's double your O3L pleasure this week with our 4th Annual Cruel World Special! It's that time of year again - on May 17, 2025, the masses will descend upon Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, for the 4th installment of what has become a destination, a cultural touchstone for fans of classic alternative, new wave, punk, synth-pop, goth, and dark wave - the Cruel World festival. Goldenvoice has once again put together a fantastic lineup of legends, younger bands who are carrying the torch, and a couple of surprises thrown in. This year's lineup includes New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Go-Go's, Devo, OMD, Death Cult, Garbage, Madness, the first appearance of the original ‘Til Tuesday lineup in 35 years, Midge Ure, Clan of Xymox, Buzzcocks, Stereo MC's, Blancmange, Alison Moyet, and "next generation" acts like Nation of Language and She Wants Revenge. As has become O3L tradition, we celebrate this annual event with an episode where we each pick the five acts that we are, or at least would be, most excited to see at this year's festival. This year, we've got a special guest Third Lad joining us, a gentleman who can rightfully be called Gen X's DJ - someone who grew up, like us, under the spell of this music and continues to keep it alive to not only our generation, but subsequent generations. Jake Rudh has hosted Minnesota Public Radio's The Current for 15 years, the weekly Transmission club night in Minneapolis for nearly 25 years, he has been a resident DJ at the famous First Avenue (yes, where a lot of Purple Rain took place) for 15 years, as well as the annual ‘80s music festival '80s in the Sands in Mexico, which is hosted by Richard Blade and many of the classic MTV VJs. We also have Jake to thank for the amazing content on the Slicing Up Eyeballs Facebook page - album anniversaries, artist birthdays, tour announcements and other news. When Nick Cave was in his early band The Birthday Party, he was angry and antagonistic toward his audience. The legendary Australian musician, writer and actor eventually grew out of his youthful contempt, but he remained consumed by his work, always putting it first before anything else. Then he lost two of his sons. In this wide-ranging conversation about grief, ambition, God and Johnny Cash, Nick tells Tom Power how he was forever transformed by his experience of unimaginable loss. He also discusses his new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, “Wild God,” and the mysterious origins of his songwriting.

On the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, 2009, I interviewed Nick Cave in (what I recall was) the Park Hyatt's restaurant located in the Yorkville area of Toronto, Ontario. The occasion was to discuss his then new novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, and we also covered his work with Warren Ellis and the filmmaker John Hillcoat to score the film, The Road, why his new novel's depiction of sexuality was revealing for both men and women, the marvels of emerging app technology and Apple's fledgling iPhone, compartmentalizing his songwriting and literary work and heading to an office every day to get those things done, and other subjects as well. This interview was originally broadcast on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show! on November 11, 2009. See Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their Wild God Tour. Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more. Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience.
