How are a new generation of diasporic Australian artists working with their cultural material?

The histories our families share can be in the stories we tell, the food we eat, the objects that are passed down from one generation to the next. Finding our own place in those histories can be difficult, but it can also be exciting and crucial. How are Australian artists from the Asian diaspora creating their own stories? And how are they reckoning with the charged history of museum collections?Leyla Stevens uses her camera as a tool to engage with interconnected webs of song, performance, and environmental reverence. In her work, deeply beautiful sequences of Balinese jungles are punctuated with the sonic intensity of cicadas and visions of shadow puppetry. While referencing objects and materials specific to his Chinese heritage, Remy Faint considers big questions: What are the limits of painterly abstraction? How can painting be used to gesture towards cultural multiplicity? And how can you learn about yourself and your family through creating artworks? The music in this episode is taken from Leyla Stevens' video work, PAHIT MANIS, night forest, which is on display at the Art Gallery of NSW

Paul Kelly's Fever Keeps Burning To Light A Decades Long Career

Paul Kelly is one of the leading artists making music in Australia and given his remarkable legacy —  consisting of some 29 albums and a career that extends back nearly four decades — he rightfully deserves his place on that pantheon. His new album, Fever Longing Still, marks his first new collection in six years, not counting the various compilations and collections that have helped to reinforce his status as a remarkable singer/songwriter worthy of international repute. Recorded in tandem with longtime collaborators — Peter Luscombe (drums), Bill McDonald (bass), Dan Kelly (guitar), Cameron Bruce (keys), and Ash Naylor (guitar) — it may come across as more of a band effort overall, but it continues to provide the sardonic wit that Kelly is so well known for. His songs are always profoundly engaging, and whether opting for a jaunty reprieve, arched enthusiasm, a mix of tenderness and tenacity to an equal degree. The fact that the album title is lifted from a work by William Shakespeare, one of Kelly's literary idols, testifies to the fact that his reputation for literacy, emotional expression and an everyman sensibility is what makes his music relatable and affecting. Consequently, when Mr. Kelly offers his insights to Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass, it's both revelatory and refreshing in every way. Festival Season on Roadcase is finally upon us and we're kicking it off from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! For this Part 1 from Pitchfork, I talked to singer, rapper and multi-genre artist, Tkay Maizda and also had a fun convo with the amazing Riot Girrrrls themselves, Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. Tkay has achieved global recognition already in her brief career, having won NME's Best Australian Solo Artist in 2022. She was also nominated for an ARIA award for Best Rap Song for her 2023 single "Silent Assassin."  But accolades alone do not do her justice; Tkay is a joyous human and a tireless artist, and she talked to me about striving to create and perform at the highest levels. We discussed what it was like growing up in Australia, moving frequently from city to city, how she stayed true to herself and her art.Molly and Allison of Bratmobile are back playing live after a 20-year hiatus and are both super excited to be performing again. Having been at the hub of the Riot Girl movement in the early 90s, Bratmobile waved the flag for the DIY spirit and Girl Power. They both talked to me about their fierce advocacy for Women's Rights and for the inclusion of Women in the music industry both in performance and production roles, and talked to me about all the life they've lived since starting up the band over 30 years ago! This is a great episode with these super compelling artists featuring tons of great stories and tales from the road.  Check it out now!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Jillian is an AUSTRALIAN ARTIST in London, a PODCASTER @artfictionspodcast an occasional ART WRITER. Her art practice brings stillness to the fractured process of perceiving what is present: a circumstance constantly in flux. Stretching from stories and landscape to philosophy and biology, she directs her research toward historical and contemporary ideas of origins, lineage, and place, as well as the connections between these. She attempts to describe the paradoxical relationship between rationality, memory, body, context, and experimentation. This is underscored by the complicated familial history she experienced growing up in Australia. Jillian mostly creates minimal, abstract paintings, which convey an interplay between foreground and background to confuse where the image began, its process of development, and the location of its final brushstrokes. The work is derived by layering one production method over another so that the resulting image mimics layers in editing software as if they could be separated and reconfigured. Taking their cue from the structures of modernist language, compositions often conflate a formalist approach with its direct opposite, such as minute detail, patterning, or mark-making governed by body movements. The result asserts and undermines the painting's otherwise idealistic, singular simplicity. These artistic inquiries extend to art writing and podcast discussions to explore imagery's complex fluidity. Had Mick Doellinger on today. Wow. He has got an interesting life. At 18 months old his family experiences an extremely traumatic event when the ship that his parents are taking to emigrate from Germany to Australia sinks in the Indian Ocean. So that's where it starts, folks. It's clear to me when I listen to this man talk that he was always meant to be a sculptor. He had to find his calling by wading through the different trials and components of a life where staying afloat is the main priority. He was a taxidermist. He worked the rodeo.  He was a butcher. All of these jobs and experiences contributed to forming an oddly specific skill set and ultimately he found his calling as a wildlife sculptor.Mick is one of the foremost wildlife sculptors out there. He's in many of the top museums and galleries in the country. So he's a very interesting indivudual. Today's guests are the dynamic duo Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus. I was able to catch them both at the same time while Nadine is visiting Tom's studio in Austria. Although their work is strikingly different, they both have done a brilliant job bringing meaningful topics and statements into their work. Keep listening and you'll agree! Join me as I crack it wide open... Nadine: After spending 3 years studying fine art photography at RMIT and PIC, she became disillusioned with the orthodox methods of image making and work style of a fine art photographer.  A few years past and many less artistic pursuits were explored when, with a visit to the solar-punk stained glass mural Cosmovitrial in Toluca, Mexico she finally discovered the creative industry which aligned with her ideals. While realizing the potential that exists within the craft that I had not yet seen in Australia.  Solidifying her obsession with research into the stained glass window's development through the 20th century, with the manifestations of the Arts and Crafts anti-industrialisation ideals embedded in it's design and construction.  Through her work, she celebrates both the legacy of the craft laid out before her and the potentiality of the materials when manipulated with a contemporary perspective and up-to-date technology. Her experience includes custom stained glass fabrication, heritage restoration, architectural glass work and exhibition works. To see more of Nadine's work, her instagram is @nadinekeegan. Tom: Thomas Medicus is a visual artist based in Innsbruck, Austria. Best known for his anamorphic cubes he also works in other fields such as illustration, animation, digital art, stained glass, restoration and conservation as well as public art. He studied social work at MCI Innsbruck before attending the Glasfachschule Kramsach, a school for glass art, where he earned a master glaziers degree later. In addition to his independent activity as a freelance artist, he was employed in the long-standing firm for stained glass windows Tiroler Glasmalerei for seven years.
