In light of what's happening at the Supreme Court right now, we're bringing you another show from Wonder Media Network that you need to listen to: Ordinary Equality. In 1962, Sherri Chessen's abortion story gained international attention and helped flip the script on abortion in the public eye -- but her story was far from universal. This week, Kate and Jamia talk about pre-Roe abortion access, from underground collectives like Jane, to the community organizations still working to provide access to reproductive care today.

This episode gets personal!  My friend Rachel Carey joins me as we discuss her film "Ask For Jane", how to write and raise kids at the same time and lots of other great things BUT one thing that came up was the unfortunate treatment women sometimes face when working in this male dominated industry.  I have made some observations over the years that I wanted to share. While not everyone will agree with my approach, it is the approach that has worked for me time and time again.  I am giving my perspective as a woman writer in a male dominated industry, but I'd also like to add that being the daughter of the showrunner also has major drawbacks and my strategy has helped with being viewed as a product of nepotism. Today on the show we have filmmaker and author Josh Folan. He's a writer/director/editor/producer/actor – though not necessarily in that order – that began professionally making things people watch on screens in 2005, prior to which he studied finance at The Ohio State University.Filmmaking highlights since founding NYEH Entertainment in 2008 include 2018 Hamptons/Woodstock/Napa selection Ask For Jane, 2017 SXSW audience award winner The Light of the Moon, 2015 Slamdance selection BODY, 2015 Raindance selection The Lives of Hamilton Fish, 2016 SOHO Int’l selection and 2017 Queens World best screenplay nominee catch 22: based on the unwritten story by seanie sugrue,His new book, Still Filmmaking, the Hard Way, is a detailed recounting of the step-by-step process of the development, production, and distribution of three micro-budget feature films with one critical commonality – producer and fifteen-year independent filmmaking veteran Josh Folan.Josh walks the reader through each and every painstaking step of the making of three sub-$250,000 USD films featured in the case study – Ask For Jane, Love Is Dead!, catch 22 – while explaining, scrutinizing, and contrasting the experience in a voice intended to entertain, not lecture. The experience of producing sixteen feature films and a bevy of short, episodic, and commercial projects inform the words herein, across which countless mistakes and learning experiences were had by the author. Still Filmmaking, the Hard Way offers readers the opportunity to learn this laundry list of lessons at a tiny fraction of the cost of crippling your own film’s micro-budget.Enjoy my conversation with Josh Folan.

Ellen Toland and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Inside the Rain, living legends, mental illness, big goofy hearts, the resilience of artists and why sometimes people appear in our lives for only a season.TrailerWatch it on Apple TV, Prime, Google Play, Tubi and others…And learn more about the film here. Synopsis:College film student Benjamin Glass (Aaron Fisher) has it all: ADHD, OCD, borderline personality. And he’s also bipolar. But Glass is more than his diagnoses – he prefers the term ‘recklessly extravagant’ -- and he’s determined to prove his genius. When a misunderstanding threatens to expel him from college, Glass pushes back; he plans on recreating the incident on video, with the help of a moonlighting sex worker (Ellen Toland), to clear his name. But how will he raise the money for the film, when his parents dismiss the scheme as another manic episode?Inside the Rain is a wincingly funny rom-com-drama, anchored by off- kilter performances by co-stars Fisher and Toland. The colorful ensemble cast includes Rosie Perez as a tough love shrink, Eric Roberts as an unhinged film producer, and Catherine Curtin and Paul Schulze as the long-suffering parents. The ultimate underdog film and proof that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible.About Ellen:Inside the Rain marks Ellen Toland's debut as a female lead. A native Texan turned New Yorker, Ellen received her BFA in Acting from Pace University. She went on to train at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and has since continued to study with some of the top acting coaches/studios in the business. Ellen's passion for the craft, coupled by her beauty and ethereal essence, has presented her the opportunity to work on projects that live in worlds ranging from period pieces to new age millennial.Ellen can currently be seen in supporting roles in Michael Engler's The Chaperone (in select theaters and now on PBS) and in Rachel Carey's Ask For Jane.On the television side, Ellen can be seen as a series regular on Amazon's millennial cult limited series Doomsday. She told me about the pattern that great performers go through. But we also talked about a new project: "Ask For Jane." It's a film about the activists who worked secretly to help women get safe abortions at a time when abortion was totally illegal. She said that even talking about abortion could be considered grounds for manslaughter. And the point Caroline wants to make is that these rights are at risk right now. I write about all my podcasts!
