Joyce Simmons is one of the best world builders I've come across! Listen in as she describes her process of building worlds and the best way to tap into what your heart is calling you to write! Also: Follow Joyce on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/melanatedscribesllc/Joyce mentions Jordan Ifueko and her book Raybearer. It took 12 years to write. In this book she conceives 13 distinct kingdoms. Next-level world building!Link to info on the book and Jordan! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50158128-raybearerhttps://www.jordanifueko.com A note from Joyce:It only took her 9 months to write the sequel entitled Redemptor, probably because the world was already built but she did build an underworld in this book. The underworld is a common theme in African inspired storytelling. African cultures hold the belief that the two worlds cross back and forth a lot and just as there is no finality to life, there is no finality to death.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55624056-redemptor Here's Jordan's Instagram page. Julia and Saeida are two of my favorite writers because they get the job done without ego. Listen to them describe what it was like to start writing and then pair up on a limited series based on Saeida's novel that took her three years to write. This episode is a deep dive into the tenacity and patience it takes to be successful as a writer in this business. Often we judge our careers by our successes when we should be judging our careers by our momentum. Are you continually working to keep your momentum going? It's the long game! This episode gets personal! My friend Rachel Carey joins me as we discuss her film "Ask For Jane", how to write and raise kids at the same time and lots of other great things BUT one thing that came up was the unfortunate treatment women sometimes face when working in this male dominated industry. I have made some observations over the years that I wanted to share. While not everyone will agree with my approach, it is the approach that has worked for me time and time again. I am giving my perspective as a woman writer in a male dominated industry, but I'd also like to add that being the daughter of the showrunner also has major drawbacks and my strategy has helped with being viewed as a product of nepotism.
