What everyone agreed on: Two cars collided. One, driven by a Hasidic Jew, veered off the road and critically injured two Black children, one of whom ultimately died. A crowd formed. Police arrived. What no one agreed on: Anything else.In the summer of 1991, Crown Heights, NY exploded into three days of violence fed by rumors and competing narratives formed from incomplete facts. In the chaos, some saw anti-Black police bias. Others saw violent anti-Semitism. But playwright Anna Deavere Smith heard the honest voices of a divided national narrative. Join us for this remarkable play that features the real words of more than 20 people, interviewed immediately after the events, speaking honestly, the way we do in private. Let's listen.Run time: 2 hours, plus a 15-minute intermissionContent Warning: Fires In The Mirror catalogs reflections of the Crown Heights Riots, a racially-charged conflict that engulfed the New York neighborhood in 1991. In brightest day, in blackest night, no listener shall escape the Four-Color Flashback's might! In an unusual turn of events, Paul has selected a DC book–but, of course, it's an unusual one. Published under DC's Young Animal imprint, curated by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, Far Sector is a Green Lantern murder mystery written by N.K. Jemisin (in her first comics work) with art by Jamal Campbell. Sojourner “Jo” Mullein is the newest Lantern in the universe, and she's been kicked way out into the far reaches of space to solve the City Enduring's first murder in half-a-millennia. That murder, though, is only a thread–and when Jo starts pulling, the whole city begins to unravel. The boys discuss Jemisin's timely social commentary, Campbell's gorgeous art, why Jo Mullein overcomes our hosts' Green Lantern skepticism, and the freaking @At. Plus, Paul and Arlo binge some TV, including the final seasons of Succession, Barry, and Ted Lasso; the new season of I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson; and the very first season of American Born Chinese. When he was a senior Pentagon official, Charles (or Chuck) Beames and his fellow military planners would speak forebodingly about “a day without space.” The nightmare scenario would involve a wide-ranging attack, kinetic or otherwise, on space systems, which could produce cascading communications and navigation failures for the armed forces (and wreak havoc on civilian technology systems as well). While that scenario hopefully never comes to pass, space is no longer a sanctuary nor uncontested higher ground. And securing civil, commercial, and military spacecraft is the order of the day. Today's episode is brought to you by Kepler Communications, a company bringing the internet to space. To learn more about Kepler and how they are modernizing space communications, visit https://kepler.space/• Sneak peek •On Pathfinder #0035, Chuck joins Ryan for a conversation on reconnaissance, security, and the growing cyber threat in space. Among other things, Chuck is the executive chairman of SpiderOak, a startup focused on shoring up the digital defenses of satellites, space networks, and the ground segment. The company recently raised a $16.4M Series C to develop, test, and fly OrbitSecure 2.0. SpiderOak employs two novel security approaches—zero-trust encryption and distributed ledger technology (DLT)—to secure space assets, along with the creation, communication, and management of data. OrbitSecure wraps up the company's design philosophy and latest defensive techniques into one offering. The product securely compartmentalizes data for complex, interconnected space infrastructure. That's important, per SpiderOak, because “today, the horizontal integration of ground stations, spacecraft, and payloads means you're trusting third parties with mission-critical data.” Rest of the resume: Chuck is also the executive chairman of York Space Systems, a satellite manufacturer, and cofounder/chairman of the SmallSat alliance. In a past life, Chuck held executive positions in the Pentagon and served as the president of Vulcan Aerospace, where he oversaw $1B of AUM invested in space and tech initiatives and directed the Stratolaunch project. In one of his government posts, Chuck oversaw a $90B annual acquisition budget mostly focused on remote sensing, space-based communications, and orbital launch services. Lastly, Chuck served 23 years on active duty as an Air Force space and intelligence officer, and retired as a colonel. • Chapters •02:30 Chuck joins show 03:18 SpiderOak mission + raise 07:29 Waking up to cyber threat from peer/near-peer adversaries 09:14 Thoughts on the Chinese spy balloon? 12:10 Balance of offensive vs. defensive capabilities on orbit 15:44 Cybersecurity and the gray zone 17:22 Vulnerabilities of space systems 19:37 Should space have its own critical infrastructure designation? 21:12 A day wthout space 27:15 SpiderOak using COTS 32:09 The zero trust security framework 37:10 What's unique about cybersecurity in space (vis-a-vis terrestrial applications) 45:36 Max Q 49:01 Staying focused while dealing with diverse mission needs across military, commercial, and civil space 53:24 Chuck's hobby • Show notes •Chuck's Twitter — https://twitter.com/ChuckBeamesBio — https://spideroak.com/executive-chairman/Recent TV appearance — https://video.foxbusiness.com/v/6319232902112#sp=show-clipsOrbitSecure — https://spideroak.com/orbitsecure/Ryan's socials — https://twitter.com/Ryandoofy / https://www.linkedin.com/in/rfduffy/Payload's socials — https://twitter.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspacePathfinder archive — Watch: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_uY3GaNf67hP-i6TRWF2n06xMv1kdkZ6Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/episodes

Who said it would be another 18 months before the next episode?Yes, we're back again with more chat about life and stuff, and today sees us start off with a chat about Easter holidays... except we soon drift into the topic of Christmas TV schedules in the UK which is about as irrelevant as it gets.Never mind, it gives us a perfect segway into our main topic which is 'Things we've recently watched on TV.' Chris has three programmes to discuss that all have a nostalgic air about them, but very much in different ways. As for Rich, he's willing to discuss the differences in format between Married At First Sight UK and Married At First Sight Australia. The mind boggles...To round things off, we give you another selection of Top 3's - this time looking at classic fizzy drinks. Episode 36 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Mark Isham. Classically trained. Pioneer of electronic music. One of the jazz greats. Combine this with his willingness to create new musical worlds, working in virtually any medium or genre, well, it’s the perfect alchemy for a film and television music composer. Originally from NY City, Mark Isham studied piano and violin, but the trumpet captured his imagination and became his signature instrument. Mark Isham’s signature trumpet sound is heard on albums of music icons including Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Chris Isaak, and Van Morrison. Mark has scored films for the most acclaimed directors; Robert Altman, Robert Redford, Jodi Foster, Sydney Lumet, Frank Darabont, John Ridley, Gavin O’Conner and Brain De Palma Movie highlights include Oscar-winning movies Crash, A River Runs Through It, Warrior, Judas and the Black Messiah. Along with Golden Globe winning Bobby and The Black Dahlia. (Sun., 10/29):The Deuce (s1, HBO)Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who also collaborated on HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," the semifictional drama series "The Deuce" tells of the germination of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York's Times Square. It's the early 1970s, and the porn business begins a shift from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate, culturally accepted enterprise. A cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife seekers centers around twins Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco, in a dual role), who navigate the sex business after meeting well-connected mobster Rudy Pipilo. Their storyline, among others, merges with that of prostitute Candy, whose ambition and intelligence lead her to a more prominent role in the industry. (Wed., 11/1):Liar: Season Finale: (s1, Sundance)Created and written by BAFTA- and Golden Globe-nominated producers and screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams, and featuring "Downton Abbey" star Joanne Froggatt and "Fantastic Four" actor Ioan Guffard, "Liar" tells the story of two people whose initial attraction leads to far-reaching consequences for them and their friends and families. Laura Nielson, a smart and capable teacher in the middle of a breakup, is set up on a date with recently widowed surgeon Andrew Earlham. However, the day after it is apparent that something has gone wrong, and the subsequent fallout rapidly spirals out of control, exposing the power of truth, deception and trust. (Released on Fri., 11/3):Fearless (s1, all 6 total, Amazon)Human rights lawyer Emma Banville takes up the defense of convicted killer Kevin Russell, who's serving a life sentence for the murder of a schoolgirl 14 years earlier. (Sun., 11/12):Vice Principals: Series Finale : (s2, HBO)"Eastbound & Down" creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill team again for a dark comedy series -- no surprise there! -- that may place high school administrators in a wholly different light. McBride and Walton Goggins co-star as vice principals at North Jackson High School, which becomes ground zero for a major power struggle when the principal retires. The rival administrators set their sights on the vacated top spot -- only to see English teacher Dr. Belinda Brown enter the picture. Putting their mutual hate aside, the bitter antagonists form an unholy alliance to bring down the outsider by any means necessary. (Sun., 11/12)Star Trek: Discovery : Mid-Season Finale : (s1, e09, 15 total, CBS All Access; Chapter Two includes the remaining 6 episodes that launch in January)Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, the story of "Star Trek: Discovery" begins roughly a decade before Captain Kirk's five-year mission -- as portrayed in the original "Star Trek" from the 1960s -- and a century before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored. (Thurs., 11/16):Better Things: Season Finale: (s2, FX)Sam Fox is an actress, who is also a single mother raising three daughters -- teenager Max, eccentric middle child Frankie, and spicy youngest daughter Duke -- in Los Angeles. She also helps to care for her mother, Phil, who lives across the street. In addition to looking after her family, Sam tries to earn a living in the difficult acting industry while having time to have fun with friends and, occasionally, get in some private time with potential mates. In addition to starring as Sam, Emmy winner Pamela Adlon is a co-creator of the comedy series, along with former "Lucky Louie" co-star Louis C.K. (Released on Fri., 11/17):Marvel’s The Punisher (s1, Netflix)After exacting revenge on the people responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, Frank Castle uncovers a conspiracy that runs deeper than New York's criminal underworld. Now known as the Punisher, he must dig deep into the conspiracy to discover the truth about injustices that affect more than just him and his family. Assisting the vigilante in his quest to fight criminals are best friend Billy Russo, who runs private military corporation Anvil, and former NSA analyst Micro, who shares common enemies with Castle and helps him as part of a so-called marriage of convenience. (Sun., 11/19):Poldark (s3, PBS)This all-new version of the vintage Masterpiece series stars Aidan Turner as Capt. Ross Poldark, a redcoat returning to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War, only to find his father dead and his true love about to marry someone else. A Mammoth Screen production, the series is packed with action, adventure and romance. Also featured are Eleanor Tomlinson as servant Demelza, Warren Clarke as Uncle Charles, and Heida Reed as Elizabeth Chenoweth. Robin Ellis, who portrayed Ross Poldark in the original adaptation 40 years ago, appears here as Reverend Halse. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
