In this episode, Carlo welcomes back cinematographer Matheus for a deep dive into the making of their independent feature film Gazer. They reflect on the film's unexpected success in the festival circuit and its upcoming theatrical release—an increasingly rare feat for original, non-IP-based indie films. Matheus shares insights on the film's unusual production journey, which spanned two and a half years, often shot nights and weekends without permits or a full crew, and emphasized empathy, collaboration, and efficiency on set. They discuss how Gazer was crafted largely on 16mm film with a minimal setup and a lean, passionate crew, embracing imperfections and learning to let go of perfectionism. Matheus emphasizes the value of over-communicating with actors, having a service-oriented mindset, and staying true to the director's vision rather than chasing aesthetic perfection. He also details how the surreal “nightmare” sequences in Gazer evolved visually and narratively, blending practical effects with bold stylistic choices like film pushing, color grading, and minimal lighting. The episode is a celebration of scrappy filmmaking, artistic growth, and the deep relationships formed through making something personal and challenging outside the studio system.Follow Us!Matt Bastos: Instagram | WebsiteBUY TICKETS FOR GAZER: TICKETSCheck out Gazer: IMDB Carlo: Instagram | WebsiteThe Creative Gap: Instagram | YoutubeSUPPORT THE PODCAST ON PATREON____________________________________________________⚙️ GEAR USED TO MAKE THIS PODCAST:Rodecaster Pro II: https://amzn.to/3RluSeVRode Podmic: https://amzn.to/3RpaR77Mic Stand: https://amzn.to/4caJUfiCamera 1: https://amzn.to/45h5E7bCamera 2: https://amzn.to/45g8iKxLight: https://amzn.to/3KK6XSt

Today on Cinemaholics, we’re joined by two hilarious and incredibly talented filmmakers/actors, Harrison Xu and Ivan Leung, to talk about their new indie film, Extremely Unique Dynamic. This queer Asian meta stoner coming-of-age dramedy takes storytelling to a whole new level—it’s a movie about two guys making a movie about two guys making a movie. Yes, it’s as wonderfully chaotic as it sounds. Extremely Unique Dynamic has been making waves, playing at over 25 film festivals and breaking box office records during its LA theatrical run. In this episode, Harrison and Ivan share the wild journey of creating a deeply personal, yet entirely universal story that subverts stoner comedy tropes while addressing themes of representation, identity, and authenticity. We dive into everything—how they infused the film with their real-life personalities, their unexpected success at festivals, and even a bit of party bus pole-dancing backstory. Along the way, we also discuss pop-punk soundtracks, karaoke go-tos, and what they hope this movie will mean 50 years from now. Plus, we get into some lighter moments, including their favorite reality TV shows, nostalgic movie picks, and the unexpected challenges of doing Q&As. Whether you’re a fan of stoner comedies, indie filmmaking, or unique dynamics (see what we did there?), this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Catch Extremely Unique Dynamics at upcoming screenings in LA, San Francisco, New York, and even Vancouver, with VOD release just around the corner. Whether people like comic books, comic book movies, or comic book characters, we all share a deep passion for tales of heroism that makes the world a better place. That's probably why comic book store Mike (played by Jesse Metcalfe of "Desperate Housewives") and new-kid-in-town Brandon (newcomer Micah Giovanni) take such a liking to each other. From writer/director Jonathan L. Bowen, "The Comic Shop" co-stars Tristan Mays ("MacGyver") as Mike's loyal employee Alex, who may have to take a job at a rival store when her hours get cut; Trevor Einhorn ("The Magicians", "Mad Men") as the spoiled and scheming rival store owner; and with cameos from Eric Roberts and Scott "Carrot Top" Thompson. Bowen's story frames the emotional journey of the characters against the backdrop of their love for indie comics and the unique community of creators and fans who often struggle to find a place in a market dominated by Marvel and DC. Shot on location in Las Vegas, "The Comic Shop" is a slice-of-life love letter to comic fans that general audiences will easily relate to. "The Comic Shop" reminds us that the best sources of inspiration are those around us who are willing to risk it all to help us find our way.

When writer/director Justin Simien (Dear White People, Haunted Mansion) first saw William Greaves' groundbreaking 1968 film, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One. He was mad. Not about the film's avant-garde style (part fiction, part documentary, part performance art) but about the fact that he hadn't seen it sooner -- it might've saved him a lot of trouble as he found his way in a challenging, second-guessing industry. Now Justin is introducing more people to the contributions to cinema made by Black creatives like Greaves, through his series Hollywood Black, now streaming from MGM+.Then Jordan has one quick thing about Brandy and other stars lighting up the late-summer/early-fall horror slate.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Justin Simien

With CHALLENGERS, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes tapped into what he really wanted to know about his favorite athletes: what are they REALLY playing for? Beyond the game? That's a glimpse we get into Brad Pitt's Billy Beane in the 2011 film MONEYBALL. What's more, we see Beane trying to do something anyone who's tried to get a movie or a play off the ground knows well: hustling to make magic with less money than the big guys. Then Jordan has one quick thing about FURIOSA's Cannes premiere.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Justin Kuritzkes
Larry Fessenden is almost a kind of mythic figure in the world of indie filmmaking. He's a filmmaker behind dozens of his own independently produced projects, an actor, an editor, and a producer who's helped give directors from Ti West to Kelly Reichart their start. His new film is BLACKOUT, which focuses on a different kind of mythic figure: the werewolf (with Larry's signature thoughtful touch). Appropriatey, Larry is feeling seen by...Larry, the Wolf Man from the 1941 original THE WOLF MAN, starring Lon Chaney, Jr. as...well...the Wolf Man. Then Jordan has one quick thing from the premiere of CHALLENGERS!***With Jordan Crucchiola and Larry Fessenden

Zoe is a passionate and independent filmmaker with a rich history of creating meaningful and engaging content. Her journey began straight out of university when she chose the bold path of freelancing rather than following the traditional route into the industry. She has nurtured a particular interest in female-focused stories, documentary-style projects, and works that contribute positively to society. Zoe's skills not only encompass shooting films but also editing and delivering complete packages that resonate with her personal ethos and align with values she holds dear.Episode Summary:In this enlightening episode, we get an intimate look into the career and insights of Zoe, a filmmaker with a distinctive approach to her craft. From the onset, Zoe's narrative sets the stage for a discussion that traverses the challenges and triumphs of forging an independent path in the film industry.Zoe opens up about her early career choices, particularly her decision to go freelance immediately after university—a move motivated by a less-than-ideal work experience at ITV. She shares stories from her travels to Tajikistan to film a grueling marathon and talks about the power of standing by your principles, especially when it comes to choosing projects that align with personal values. Listeners are offered a raw and candid glimpse into what it takes to walk one's own path and the importance of owning your craft.Key Takeaways:Independence and courage can be a massive asset in the creative industry; Zoe's decision to start freelancing straight out of university demonstrates this.Zoe emphasizes the importance of saying no to projects that don't align with personal values, even if they are financially tempting. One of Zoe's notable projects included documenting a marathon in Tajikistan, highlighting her penchant for adventurous and meaningful storytelling. Her advice to aspiring filmmakers is clear: start creating content about things you care about, share your work, and be patient as your portfolio naturally draws the right kind of work. The early passions we indulge in around the ages of twelve to fifteen can be the true compass for our future careers; Zoe's story is a testament to this belief.Notable Quotes:"I've always done photography. I'd done photography before uni... I'd been doing projects for people, for charities.""[ITV] said, oh, sorry, it's not in our policy to credit work experience staff... I decided to go my own way instead.""I think I've worked quite hard on kind of finessing the projects that I do and saying no to the ones that I don't want to do.""Make films about stuff that you care about and then put them out. Show them to people. Tell anyone and everybody that you meet about what you do."www.shewhodareswins.com for all your merch :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker's GuideThe navigation of film distribution can be one of the more difficult parts of the filmmaker's process. From understanding deal memos, aligning expectations, to simply getting something you've undoubtedly spent so much time and effort on in front of, and sometimes literally in the hands of, your intended audience. These are just some of the things covered in today's valuable and personal episode with guest Malcolm Ingram - an acclaimed and decorated filmmaker and documentarian, as well as an ambassador of the now resurgent desire for physical media. Leveraging all these things, Ingram felt a personal pull to, most recently, start his own distribution company with a focus on this physical media Mercantile Instinct. And his first release is the film CLERK (yes, a look at the man and the stories behind the hit CLERKS). CLERK will feature both Blu-Ray as well as VHS and Blu-Ray - with wide release on September 26th. In 2015, students of the Film & Television Institute of India took the cinema to the streets with a strike. One of the first of the agitations that raged across India's universities at that time, it defined the right to make and show films as central to freedom on the campus. This podcast series, commemorates that historic struggle, in these three episodes of John-Ghatak-Tarkovsky The third and final episode, A Hacker Cinema, looks at the recent histories of censorship, alongside the morphing of the moving image into streaming media, emphasising circulation, using memes, encouraging a new interactivity with its spectators, with significant aesthetic consequences on both filmmaking and the self-definition of a filmmaker. On this episode of Hustle Inspires Hustle, Alex Quin interviews Jason Horton, a director, writer, and producer who has been making movies since 2003. Jason explains the importance of luck, hard work, and creativity in filmmaking, as well as the need to understand when to step away from a project and move on. He also discusses the importance of paid advertising, such as using Facebook and Instagram ads, as well as influencers on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.Wisdom NuggetsImportance of Luck and Hard Work: Jason emphasizes that while luck plays a role in filmmaking, it is crucial to combine it with hard work. Filmmakers need to constantly hustle and create opportunities for themselves.Multitasking and Learning Multiple Skills: Jason advises filmmakers to learn multiple tasks themselves, such as editing, to save costs and have more control over their projects. Being versatile and adaptable is key in the independent filmmaking industry.Paid Advertising for Movies: Jason highlights the significance of paid advertising, particularly through platforms like Facebook and Instagram ads. Utilizing influencers on social media can also help reach a wider audience and generate more interest in the film.Choosing the Right Distributor: Filmmakers should carefully consider their options when selecting a distributor. Jason recommends distributors like FilmHub and Indy Rights for starting filmmakers, as they have no upfront fees and take a 20% back end split. It is important to be cautious of distributors that may take a higher percentage and charge additional fees.Challenges of International Distribution: Jason discusses the challenges faced by independent filmmakers when it comes to international distribution. He suggests registering an LLC for each project and obtaining proper release forms for everyone involved in the film, whether paid or unpaid. Additionally, he advises against relying solely on fair use in documentaries, as it may not provide sufficient legal protection.Power Quotes"Luck plays a role, but you have to combine it with hard work. You have to hustle and create opportunities for yourself." - Jason Horton"Learn multiple tasks yourself. Learn how to edit, learn how to do sound design, learn how to do color correction. It saves you money and gives you more control." - Jason Horton"Creativity is key.
