Single-payer advocates in California scored a big win last week when a proposed law passed through the Assembly Health Committee on an 11-3 vote. Now AB1400, introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-27), will go to the lower chamber's Appropriations Committee this Thursday. If it passes, the bill will make its way to the Assembly floor for a vote. Fantastic news, right? It would be, if Governor Gavin Newsom hadn't started to show signs of buckling under the pressure from his millionaire friends in the insurance industry. While Newsom ran his 2018 governor's race on a single-payer platform, he suddenly has flip-flopped on the bill, claiming to reporters that he hasn't read it or the accompanying ACA11, which would lay out the funding for single-payer in California. All of this is happening in the backdrop of the state's private health care system's massive systemic failure to the latest surge in COVID-19. Emergency rooms throughout California are already reaching crisis-level capacity. Here in Sacramento County, positive results are coming back for an incredible 43% of tests. If Californians learn nothing else from two years of systemic failure in the for-profit medical system, it's that a single-payer future is the best bet for our collective health. Podcast Highlights: “We may have an additional 7 million uninsured people in this country by a virtue of all the people that are unemployed and as those unemployments grow, we will have more people uninsured.” - Dave Jones on the topic of the impacts COVID-19 has had on health insurance. “Insurers did not price these policies based on having to pay out business interruption claims...450 billion dollars a month in losses that this may suffer as a result of business interruption and the insurers simply have not priced the policies to cover those losses.” - Dave Jones on the topic of the impacts COVID-19 has had on other insurance industries like auto, business, and life insurance. “One of the things we've learned tragically with COVID-19 is the importance of preparation and we simply weren't prepared...so too with climate change, we're not prepared.” - Dave Jones on the topic of the government and private sector response to COVID-19 and how it can help to respond to other issues.  Chances are that you or someone you know very well, has experienced pregnancy loss. One of the ongoing difficulties surrounding loss, is that it is an uncomfortable subject to discuss, both for the parents and other people in their lives. So, these mothers and parents often suffer in solitary silence. When you couple that with the lack of education, information, and support for Perinatal loss and grief, you have a recipe for mental, emotional and physical devastation. My guest today is on a mission for change. Thank you Nicole for sharing your story through miscarriages and then having your rainbow baby!    Nicole Curran Sanchez was born and raised in Orange County, CA, and has lived in Sacramento since 2008. She works at the state capitol as a Senior Legislative Assistant and scheduler to the Chair of the Assembly Health Committee. Nicole is very active in her community and loves to help people navigate state resources. She is especially gifted in helping people understand paid family medical leave, Medi-Cal, and other state programs to help the most vulnerable populations, such as the homeless, seniors, and children. Nicole and her husband, Rick, are thankful for their rainbow baby, their five-year-old son, Cruz.   Show Highlights:   Nicole’s story of two miscarriages, beginning in 2011, and the depression and heartache that came from never being given the opportunity to talk about her feelings How she “kept on grieving” without even knowing why she was grieving Even as a health advocate, she couldn’t even focus on what was really happening to her In 2012-- a second miscarriage at 14-½ weeks, and the doctor treated her like a statistic As the doctor searched for a heartbeat, she told Nicole that 1 in 4 women experience miscarriage How Nicole felt, with no sympathy, no care, and no hand-holding The domino effect that occurred when Nicole posted a little about her story on social media and then a group of women shared and connected over their losses Why she found a new Ob-gyn AND got a rescue dog who ended up rescuing her When she was pregnant again, she was excited, scared, anxious, and very paranoid After 38 hours of labor and an allergic reaction to the epidural, she experienced the birth of her rainbow baby, Cruz How she felt: “a void of empathy, lack of care, and feeling alone” The ways of support that worked and helped her push herself to not get depressed Nicole’s advice to other moms: Name the losses, make a keepsake box, and honor the losses How her husband was her biggest support and constant source of comfort The emotional rollercoaster that dads go through with losses How Nicole wants to help and support others who go through loss How Facebook allows Nicole to reach out and share to help others How Nicole advocates for other moms in her meetings with healthcare professionals Hopeful messages from Nicole: “Families come in all shapes and sizes and they are all different. Your family is YOUR story and you aren’t just a statistic. Let others be there for you to help and support you.”

Citizen Action of Wisconsin is releasing a new report on Thursday at 11 AM analyzing 2014 small group health insurance rate variations between Wisconsin and Minnesota to determine which state offers more affordable health coverage for small businesses. Like the well-documented individual marketplace rate gap between Minnesota and Wisconsin, the report finds a significant gap in the small employer health insurance market. The report provides regional numbers, making it possible to compare each of the metro area of Wisconsin to rates in Minnesota. Under the Affordable Care Act, states have the tools to reduce the cost of health coverage for their residents. Despite individual market comparisons between Wisconsin and Minnesota, no research has comprehensively compared small group health insurance rates. This report includes weighted average analysis of Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) options that have posted their insurance rates on MNSure.org and Healthcare.gov to determine policy impacts on premium rates. Joining the call to discuss the implications of the findings will be State Senate Democratic Leader Chris Larson and Representative Jon Richards, Ranking Democratic member of Assembly Health Committee.

BREAKING NEWS-- Dr. Tim O'Shea joins us once again to give us a "fly on the wall" account on what amounted to be "Political Theatrics" at its best, as the California Assembly Health Committee voted to approve proposed bill AB2109 on April 17, 2012. If enacted into law, this California bill will make it mandatory for parents to talk with a medical physician if they choose to exercise their RIGHT to exempt their child from the compulsory vaccine schedule needed for school attendance because it counters a philosophical belief of theirs. If you don’t live in California and are thinking this doesn’t affect you.... think again. While this bill has very little do directly with chiropractic.... it has EVERYTHING to do with your RIGHTS as a parent to make decisions for your child free of government mandated handholding and oversight.... This is just one of the many boils on the butt of a much larger dragon that must be slayed! Ignore this boil, though, and we’re all cooked.
