In light of recent criticism coming out of state about California's Downtown areas, Assembly member Matt Haney has taken action, forming a special committee composed of lawmakers, aimed at revitalizing these vital areas. With concerns ranging from homelessness and vacant storefronts, to the impact of remote work and a lack of housing supply, Haney's initiative seeks to tackle these challenges head-on by exploring strategies such as incentivizing in-person work, converting vacant office spaces into housing, and fostering vibrant cultural scenes. The committee aims to breathe new life into downtown areas, and for a closer look, KCBS Radio's Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart were joined on the KCBS Ring Central Newsline by Assembly member Matt Haney.

The politics of the Valley are distinct and yet challenging to much of the “orthodoxy” of California as a blue state. A new study, out today, warns that millions of American school children are exposed to potentially toxic chemicals that are in the uniforms they wear to school. But there's a bill on Governor Newsom's desk that would get rid of those very chemicals in kids' clothes, at least in California We are talking about PFAs, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as “forever chemicals” because they get in your blood-stream and stay there. The textile industry uses them to repel water and stains in clothing, but they can also cause cancer and other serious diseases in humans, who inhale them, get them on their skin or drink them in water. For more, KCBS Radio's Patti Reising, Bret Burkhart, and Doug Sovern are joined by by State Assembly member, Phil Ting of San Francisco. He's the author of AB1817, the Safer Clothes and Textiles Act, which has already passed the state legislature and awaits Governor Newsom's signature.

You're listening to the American Democracy Minute, keeping YOUR government by and for the people.A glimmer of good news from California to share on the Money-in-Politics front today. Last week, AB1819 advanced out of the California State Assembly's Election Law committee, which prohibits “foreign-influenced business entities” from spending money in the state's elections and ballot initiatives. This includes the use of “straw man” entities where money is given to someone who doesn't work for the company makes the contribution. As foreign company holdings in the US has increased, so has their influence. The Federal Elections Commission recently levied the largest campaign finance fine ever on a Canadian steel executive who used his Pennsylvania subsidiary to illegally contribute $1.75 million dollars to Donald Trump's presidential campaign.A frequent tool of foreign companies wanting to make anonymous contributions to campaigns and political action committees has been Limited Liability Corporations, which make the donations in the company's name, not the actual donors. A 2020 report called “Mystery Money” by campaign finance reform group Issue One demonstrates how this is done, and the havoc it can wreak on U.S. Elections. AB 1819 is headed next to the Appropriations committee as it winds throught the California legislature.Visit AmericanDemocracyMinute.org to find Issue One's report and more information on AB 1819 at advocacy group Free Speech for People. On the 17th episode of Immigration Today! Angeline Chen interviews Connie Chung Joe, the Chief Executive Officer of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles. They are the nation's largest legal and civil rights organization for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Connie received her BA in Spanish and International Relations from USC and her JD from Georgetown University Law Center. She has worked alongside immigrant communities for many years and is the daughter of South Korean immigrant parents. Throughout this podcast, she tells us about her own upbringing and the work she does at Asian Americans Advancing Justice – LA. Asian Americans Advancing Justice – LA was founded in 1983 in the wake of the murder of Vincent Chin, a Chinese American killed by two Caucasian auto workers who blamed the Japanese auto industry for the economic demise in Detroit at the time. There then became a rise in Asian American activism, which brought to light the need for organizations that focused on ethnically and culturally specific work. To this day, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – LA serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Through direct services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, leadership development, and capacity building, Advancing Justice – LA focuses on the most vulnerable members of Asian American and AANHPI communities while also building a strong voice for civil rights and social justice. Connie has been honored for her work by the Asian Pacific Women's Center and Asian American Drug Abuse Program. In 2016, she was appointed by California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon to the Domestic Violence Advisory Council. In 2017, Connie was named by CA Assembly member Sebastian Ridley-Thomas and LA County Board of Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas a 40 Under 40 Emerging Civic Leader. Most people don't think about running for office when pondering environmental careers. However, California Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia may change your mind.In a state ravaged by air pollution and wildfires, Garcia has crafted policy that fights climate change. Recently, he introduced AB 1500, which helped inspire the Climate Resilience Bond. This allocates $3.7 billion of the state's 2021-22 budget toward shoring up disadvantaged communities against “catastrophic wildfire, sea level rise, drought, extreme heat and flooding.” It also provides for infrastructure investments. “The connection here to climate, the drought, the fires . . . is recognizing that we have a serious crisis with mother earth,” Garcia said. “We've got some work to do when it comes to not just building the infrastructure, but the conservation aspect of it is key for the first time.”Garcia hardly followed a traditional “green” education and career path. He took time off after high school, then attended his local community college and completed his bachelor's degree at the University of California Riverside. His journey eventually led him to the Coachella City Council at 27. At 29, he became Coachella's mayor, the youngest ever elected in that city. In 2014, Garcia became assemblyman. Garcia believes that young people can help save the planet by serving others. “I never thought that going into public service would end up being a career,” he said. “When I came to realize that it is something that one can do to contribute to the betterment . . . of conditions in our communities, I kind of got married to the idea. I've been doing it since.”Resources included in this episode: Ca.gov: Budget Summary A breakdown of how the Climate Resilience Bond will be used. MEET SONIA I am a proud daughter of Indian immigrants. My parents have worked so hard to make sure my brother and I had a better life than they had in India. I don’t take their sacrifice for granted. I grew up with my parents telling me stories of how they helped people in this community through their every day jobs as insurance agents. I am always in awe of how much trust this community has placed in my family. And I don’t take that trust for granted. My whole life has been about giving back. Contributing to the betterment of my community. That’s why I studied community development and Regional Planning. And that’s why I followed in my parents’ footsteps. And now I get the honor of talking to people every day about the challenges they’re facing and how they can protect the life they’ve worked so hard to build. People talk to me when they’ve had something big happen in their lives: when they’ve had a baby, or purchased their first home, or they’re planning their retirement. And they depend on me to help guide them through that process. They trust me. I’m asking you to trust me to guide you through the next two years. I know we can do better in this community. I’ve seen it happen in communities all across this country. With fewer resources. We have no excuse. Our community deserves better infrastructure. Better jobs. A brighter future. And I’m the one to make that happen here. I’m Sonia Aery and I’m running to represent the 3rd District in the California Assembly. BREAKING NEWS-- Dr. Tim O'Shea joins us once again to give us a "fly on the wall" account on what amounted to be "Political Theatrics" at its best, as the California Assembly Health Committee voted to approve proposed bill AB2109 on April 17, 2012. If enacted into law, this California bill will make it mandatory for parents to talk with a medical physician if they choose to exercise their RIGHT to exempt their child from the compulsory vaccine schedule needed for school attendance because it counters a philosophical belief of theirs. If you don’t live in California and are thinking this doesn’t affect you.... think again. While this bill has very little do directly with chiropractic.... it has EVERYTHING to do with your RIGHTS as a parent to make decisions for your child free of government mandated handholding and oversight.... This is just one of the many boils on the butt of a much larger dragon that must be slayed! Ignore this boil, though, and we’re all cooked.
