Tread Perilously Summer Grab Bag continues with an episode of Automan called "Ships in the Night." When a number of American businessmen go missing in the Central or South American island country of San Cristobal, Lt. Jack Curtis and Roxanne are dispatched to get to the bottom of one particular disappearance. But when Automan connects to the Bureau computer and learns about the other missing persons on the island, he and Walter book it down south. There, they discover a predictably corrupt government. But will Lt. Jack Curtis's history with the ringleader of the operation spell disaster for all involved? Erik and Justin finally encounter an episode of Automan they find "almost charming." Chuck Wagner once again proves to be the show's MVP while Desi Arnaz Jr. continues to be its weakest link ... although Erik makes a case for the removal of Lt. Jack Curtis. Justin recalls when Helen Mirren specialized in nude magic. Erik doubts the production went outside of Los Angeles county to create San Cristobal. A difference in recent Pixar movies is identified. Robert Evans joins the chat as a key business on San Cristobal seems missing. Palmolive dish soap takes on outsized importance and the pair learns the truth about "The Tide is High."

Time to access the memory banks, Slackers.A few weeks ago we covered one hit wonders, but what about those one season TV shows? Why does a show that was barely on our TV screens have such a strong imprint in our memories?Regardless of quality, shows like Misfits of Science and Manimal have somehow endured in pop culture. Was it because they were actually terrible, were they any good, or were they just a product of their time? They were probably terrible, but some shows that only got one season definitely deserved at least one more chance. Shows like Battlestar Galactica had a much more successful reimagining in the 2000's - while the Joss Whedon space western, Firefly, was plagued by a bad time slot - although thankfully they got a feature film that served to finish the story. One thing is certain - many of these one season shows were the career launching points for future stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Courtney Cox, and Nathan Fillion. What are some of your favorites?
I spend more time on the IMDb app than any human being should. I love pausing whatever I'm watching to look it up on IMDb and study the cast, trivia, filming locations, etc. I call these my little rabbit holes and this episode of the podcast is a journey through forgotten TV shows and movies that started when I thought I recognized actor Mark Blankfield from a Saved By The Bell episode. This somehow leads us to a discussion of The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Joe Pesci's forgotten TV show Half Nelson, and some of Glen A. Larson's TV misses like Manimal, Automan, The HighwayMan, Chameleons, and NightMan. We're also gonna touch on ABC's sketch show Fridays, abysmal made for TV movie sequels, and Tarzan's link to a religious cult. Somehow this all ends with The Sopranos and I don't even remember how I got there. Enjoy!

Automan is a 1983 TV show from Glen A Larsen (Knightrider, Battlestar Galactica) and takes the effects pioneered in Tron and puts them in a detective show. Hammy acting, corny dialogue and improbable plotting ensue.Music comes from Willy Bo Walker. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Tread Perilously's 2023 Summer Grab Bag month concludes with Automan's third episode, "The Great Pretender." When the police are stymied in apprehending Brock, a local crime lord who stole paper to print counterfeit money, Automan takes it upon himself to generate a rival mafia don: Mr. Mann. Taking control of Brock's rackets one-by-one, he starts to make a name for himself and attracts the attention of the regional crime boss. Will Automan prove to be a better sort of criminal? Will Detective Jack Curtis get his man? And will Walter ever realize his truest dream: to be in the field. With Automan, there's always monkey's paw potential, so Walter better watch out for his answered prayers. Erik and Justin immediately praise special guest star Clu Gulager. Geography Corner leads to the actor's self-made residency at the New Beverly Theater. A review of Secret Invasion breaks out, as do further thoughts on recent Marvel productions. Justin ends up tickled by a pool hall set that feels stuck in the 1950s. The pair obsess over Brock's wedding, which he also obsesses over. A casino recalls the plot of a Baywatch episode. Justin stumbles on the worst possible romantic subplot for Automan and learns the truth about Chuck Wagner's modeling career.
Date: July 12, 2023Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S5: E1 - Russ Dwarf - Killer Dwarfs - The Pride of the Canadian SideArtist Bio -Killer Dwarfs (stylized as KiLLeR DWaRfS) is a Canadian hard rock band that formed in late 1981 in Oshawa, Ontario, and enjoyed moderate success in their native Canada in the 1980s. The band is known for its offbeat sense of humor (all band members adopted the surname "Dwarf") and was nominated for two Juno Awards during its career. Killer Dwarfs were sometimes compared to NWOBHM acts such as Iron Maiden and SaxonBefore The Killer Dwarfs formed, the band consisted of Darrell Millar, Bryce Trewin, and Ange Fodero in a group called Sphinx. After Sphinx, Russ Graham entered the picture and they became The Killer Dwarfs. The original line-up consisted of Russ Graham (vocals) and Darrell Millar (drums), along with Bryce Trewin (guitar) and Ange Fodero (bass). Their self-titled 1983 debut album was nominated for a Juno Award and radio stations in the US, particularly in Texas, started to play the album.Trewin and Fodero left the band shortly afterward and were replaced by guitarist Mike Hall and bassist Ron Mayer. This line-up released the band's breakthrough 1986 album Stand Tall, followed by Big Deal in 1988 and Dirty Weapons in 1990. The band received much recognition in Canada and the United States during the 80's, and its videos were in regular rotation at MuchMusic and on the MTV program Headbangers Ball. Gerry Finn replaced Hall in 1992, and the album Method to the Madness was released later that year. The band toured for several years but then parted ways. During the mid-to-late 1990s, the band members pursued other projects. Graham formed a band called PennyBlack, and Hall and Finn both became members of the Canadian metal band Helix. Millar went on to drum for the southern rock band Laidlaw before forming his own Bon Scott era AC/DC tribute band Autobon, which went on to become Automan.ca, which provided Millar with a vehicle for recording original material. On January 5, 2018, it was announced that Killer Dwarfs had signed to Megadeth bassist David Ellefson's EMP Label Group, which would release a Killer Dwarfs' live album called NO GUFF. EMP also announced that it would reissue the band's independently released START@ONE and vocalist Graham's solo debut Wireless, plus new 2019 studio albums from Killer Dwarfs and Russ Dwarf.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.killerdwarfsband.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages.
